Abstract
Exposure to high levels of harmful agents in the workplace can significantly impact workers' health, contributing to morbidity and mortality. Levels of these exposures are often measured in high-income countries in research studies and, in some places, to monitor levels in line with health and safety regulations. However, less is known about workplace exposure levels in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Our aim was to describe the quantitative exposure measurements of different occupational agents across industries within LMICs. We conducted a scoping review of peer-reviewed publications available on Web of Science and PubMed from inception to 1 September 2023. Our search focused on quantitative occupational exposure measurements across industries in LMICs. We identified a total of 8,676 publications. After screening, 58 studies from 25 countries were retained for final review. China, Iran, and Tanzania contributed the greatest number of studies. Manufacturing, mining, and agriculture were the most studied sectors, with factory workers and miners being the most common job titles. Exposure measurements included vapour, gases, dust, and fumes (VGDF), solvents, metals, pesticides and particulate matter. Occupational exposure levels for the same industry varied widely across geographical regions. This review provides a comprehensive overview of occupational exposures in LMICs and highlights the absence of data in certain geographical areas and industries. The study contributes valuable insights for directing future research, and the need to optimise the assessment of occupational exposures in LMICs with the aim ultimately of reducing disease.

Abstract
Exposure to occupational hazards like dust, pesticides, diesel emission particles, or physical hazards in the agricultural sector is known to cause adverse health effects on farm workers. Our study aimed at addressing the association of immunomodulatory status with plasma levels of lung cancer biomarkers in farming population, attempting to recognition of vulnerable farming group. Blood samples from apparently healthy 51 chicken husbandry, 19 grape orchard, and 21 rose greenhouse workers were subjected to evaluate plasma levels of two representative lung cancer biomarkers, pro-gastrin releasing peptide (Pro-GRP) and cytokeratin fragment 19 (CYFRA 21-1). Peripheral blood mononuclear cells obtained from farmers were used for natural killer (NK) cell phenotyping and cytokines (interferon-gamma, IFN-γ and interleukin-13, IL-13) profiling in the culture supernatant. Compared to the rose greenhouse farmers, the grape orchard and chicken husbandry workers revealed a significantly upregulated plasma Pro-GRP and CYFRA 21-1 level. A low proportion of NK cells was observed among the female grape orchard workers and a lowered IFN- γ:IL-13 ratio was seen in the grape and chicken husbandry workers than the rose workers. Our findings imply that grape orchard and chicken husbandry workers have more disturbed immune homeostasis implicated with augmentation in the levels of lung cancer biomarkers than the rose greenhouse workers.

Abstract
Particulate matter (PM) represents an air quality management challenge for confined swine production systems. Due to the limited space and ventilation rate, PM can reach relatively high concentrations in swine barns. PM in swine barns possesses different physical, chemical, and biological characteristics than that in the atmosphere and other indoor environments. As a result, it exerts different environmental and health effects and creates some unique challenges regarding PM measurement and mitigation. Numerous research efforts have been made, generating massive data and information. However, relevant review reports are sporadic. This study aims to provide an updated comprehensive review of swine barn PM, focusing on publications since 1990. It covers various topics including PM characteristics, sources, measurement methods, and in-barn mitigation technologies. As PM in swine barns is primarily of biological origins, bioaerosols are reviewed in great detail. Relevant topics include bacterial/fungal counts, viruses, microbial community composition, antibiotic-resistant bacteria, antibiotic resistance genes, endotoxins, and (1→3)-β-D-glucans. For each topic, existing knowledge is summarized and discussed and knowledge gaps are identified. Overall, PM in swine barns is complicated in chemical and biological composition and highly variable in mass concentrations, size, and microbial abundance. Feed, feces, and skins constitute the major PM sources. Regarding in-barn PM mitigation, four technologies (oil/water sprinkling, ionization, alternation of feed and feeders, and recirculating air filtration) are dominant. However, none of them have been widely used in commercial barns. A collective discussion of major knowledge gaps and future research needs is offered at the end of the report.

Abstract
Workers in swine operations may be at increased risk of developing respiratory problems. These respiratory conditions are more prevalent among workers who are smokers. Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) genes play an important role in human immune responses to various respiratory hazards. This study aimed to investigate whether polymorphisms in TNF genes might alter the effects of smoking on lung function among workers in swine operations. Three hundred and seventy-four full-time workers from large swine operations and 411 non-farming rural dwellers in Saskatchewan were included in this study. Information on demographic and lifestyle characteristics, pulmonary function, and blood samples were obtained. Multiple linear regression analyses were used in the statistical analysis. Three promoter polymorphisms (rs1799724, rs361525, and rs1800629) in the TNF gene were investigated. Only the interaction term between smoking status and rs1799724 was significant in the multiple regression models. Among workers with the rs1799724 polymorphism (TT+TC), current smokers exhibited significantly lower lung function than nonsmokers. These associations were not observed among workers with the wild-type (CC). These findings were not observed among non-farming rural dwellers. Data demonstrated the possible involvement of TNF gene in (1) development of adverse respiratory conditions among workers who are smokers, (2) importance of smoking cessation among workers, especially those with polymorphisms in the TNF gene, and (3) potential implications in treatment, screening, and prevention.
