Abstract
BACKGROUND Chemotherapy is associated with many side effects, including pain and psychological distress, which affect patients' physical and psychological health. AIM The aim of this study was to elucidate the efficacy of a pain management intervention (POLA) to promote pain, psychological distress, hope and post-traumatic growth in breast cancer patients, also, to undertake a preliminary evaluation of the intervention. METHODS A pilot randomized controlled trial was conducted in an Iranian hospital involving 42 breast cancer (BC) patients during chemotherapy. The intervention group received a 6-week group therapy (90 minutes per session) administered by a psychologist. Meanwhile, the comparison group received standard care. patients' Pain, psychological distress, hope and post-traumatic growth were measured at 3 time points (baseline, week 6, and 12 weeks postintervention). RESULTS The study design was found to be feasible, with a recruitment rate of 61.64% and an attrition rate of 6.66%. Compared to the control group, the intervention group showed a significant reduction in pain, psychological distress, depression, anxiety, and stress, as well as a notable improvement in hope and post-traumatic growth (p < .01). These differences remained significant at follow-up (p < 0.05). The study population found the intervention acceptable, as evidenced by a high attendance rate of 90% and adherence rate of 90.47%. CONCLUSION Psychoeducational intervention positively affects the pain, psychological distress, hope and post-traumatic growth of BC patients during chemotherapy.

Abstract
CONTEXT In kidney therapy (KT) decisions, goal-concordant decision-making is recognized to be important, yet alignment with patients' goals during dialysis initiation is not always achieved. OBJECTIVES To explore older patients' and caregivers' hopes, goals, and fears related to KT and communication of these elements with members of their health care team. METHODS The study included patients aged ≥75 years with an estimated glomerular filtration rate ≤25 mL/min/1.73 m2 and their caregivers enrolled in a palliative care intervention for KT decision-making. Patients and caregivers were asked open-ended questions about their hopes, goals, and fears related to KT decisions. A survey assessed if patients shared their goals with members of their health care team. Qualitative data underwent content analysis, supplemented by demographic descriptive statistics. RESULTS The mean age of patients (n = 26) was 82.7 (±5.7) years, and caregivers (n = 15) had a mean age of 66.4 (±13.7) years. Among the participants, 13 patients and 11 caregivers were women, and 20 patients and 12 caregivers were White. Four themes emerged: (1) Maintaining things as good as they are by avoiding dialysis-related burdens; (2) seeking longevity while avoiding dialysis; (3) avoiding pain, symptoms, and body disfigurement; and (4) deferring decision-making. Patients rarely had shared their goals with the key members of their health care team. CONCLUSION Patients and caregivers prioritize maintaining quality of life, deferring decision-making regarding dialysis, and avoiding dialysis-related burdens. These goals are often unshared with their family and health care teams. Given our aging population, urgent action is needed to educate clinicians to actively explore and engage with patient goals in KT decision-making.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Hope has been associated with better health and social well-being outcomes, including emotional adjustment, positive affect, life satisfaction, reduced risk of all-cause mortality, and increased physical activity, yet how hope as a construct impacts these health benefits in older adults is not very well-understood. This study examined: (1) the relationship between hope and health behaviors in older adults; (2) how this relationship may differ across different socio-demographic groups; and (3) how hope relates to perceived future selves among older adults. METHODS The study used cross-sectional data from 711 community-dwelling adults aged ≥55 years (280 men, 431 women). Survey measures included the Snyder Adult Dispositional Hope Scale (ADHS) and the Herth Hope Index (HHI), a health behaviors checklist, self-reported health, and a future self-scale. Data were analyzed using bivariate and multiple regressions. RESULTS Hope was positively associated with healthy behaviors in older adults. Participants with higher levels of hope also reported more positive future selves and better health. The associations were similar across different racial/ethnic groups. CONCLUSIONS This study fills an important gap in our understanding of hope and its association with health behaviors in community-dwelling older adults. These findings highlight a need to promote hope in older adults in order to enhance their sense of well-being.

Abstract
This study aimed to evidence the validity and reliability of the Ecuadorian version of the Adult Dispositional Hope Scale, one of the most studied concepts of positive psychology. The adaptation process included translation and semantic and idiomatic validation. For content validation, an expert review and focus group were conducted. The questionnaire was applied to 2423 workers in Ecuador with a mean age of 37 years (SD = 9.04), and 65.6% were women. A confirmatory factor analysis was conducted to assess the validity of the scale's dimensionality. The reliability and convergent and discriminant validity were also evaluated. In order to investigate the best solution for an Ecuadorian version of the Adult Dispositional Hope Scale, four structural models were assessed. The unidimensional solution was the most adequate structure for the scale. The internal consistency of the scale was adequate. The Adult Dispositional Hope Scale (ADHS) was developed to assess this positive psychological state and has been the most used tool in many contexts. To our knowledge, this study is the first to adapt the Adult Dispositional Hope Scale into the Ecuadorian context and evaluate its validity. The findings support its reliability, factorial, and construct validity in the Ecuadorian context. Furthermore, the results show that dispositional hope acts as a protective factor, promoting work engagement and preventing burnout.

Abstract
Introduction Caused by an error in cell division that produces an additional chromosome 21, Down syndrome (DS) is one of the most common developmental disorders in the world. This study aims to analyze the relationship between psychological capital, quality of life and well-being of caregivers of individuals with Down syndrome (DS). Methods The participants were 98 caregivers (mothers, M = 52.13, SD = 11.39) of individuals with Down syndrome. The instruments used were the Psychological Capital Questionnaire (measuring self-efficacy, resilience, optimism, and hope), Quality of Life Questionnaire (including social support, general satisfaction, physical/psychological health, absence of excessive workload/free time), and Psychological Wellbeing Scale, investigating the following dimensions: self-acceptance, positive relationships with others, autonomy, environmental mastery, purpose in life, and personal growth. Results The mediation analysis showed that self-efficacy, hope, and resilience are positively associated to quality of life, and optimism is positively associated to well-being. The total effects of psychological capital on well-being are positive and significant and quality of life mediates the relationship between psychological capital and well-being. Discussion These results show that psychological capital is an important inner resource for caregivers of DS individuals and must be improved through support services, so that caregivers have a higher perception of the quality of life and implicitly of well-being.

Abstract
Snyder's theory of hope has been a cornerstone of hope research for over four decades. The original theory conceptualized hope as a two-factor model representing agency and pathways, however, recent studies have suggested a single-factor model may be the best fit for hope instruments. This has become more apparent as hope scales have been translated into different languages, across different cultures, and examining new domains. Currently, single and multiple factor models have been supported for most hope measures but will continue to be examined as we explore what hope means to unresearched populations and with new and varied contexts.

Abstract
In order to evaluate the effect of the hope theory combined with psychological intervention on patients with intracranial aneurysms after surgical treatment, a total of 98 patients with intracranial aneurysm surgery admitted to our hospital from March 2019 to January 2021 were analyzed. According to the random number table method, all patients are divided into two groups: the traditional group and the experimental group. After intracranial aneurysm surgery, the patients of the traditional group and of the joint group are treated with conventional nursing and hope theory combined with psychological intervention nursing mode, respectively. The results demonstrate that the hope theory combined with psychological intervention can improve the level of postoperative patients with intracranial aneurysm life hope, self-efficacy, and postoperative quality of life.

Abstract
Adults facing homelessness often perceive themselves to be at the bottom of society, which has implications for their current and future well-being. Snyder's hope theory, which posits that agency thinking and pathways thinking are necessary for achieving a hopeful outlook on life, may be helpful for understanding drivers of well-being among individuals experiencing homelessness. In this study, we examined dispositional hope, perceived goal attainment, social support, and perceived standing in society among 123 adults experiencing homelessness who were attending a support group at a daytime drop-in center in the United States. Participants completed self-report measures related to the aforementioned variables of interest. We discovered that higher levels of self-reported goal attainment, independent of the type of goal identified, were significantly associated with total hope and both its subscales, that social support was significantly associated with total hope and pathways thinking, and that perceived standing in society was significantly associated with total hope and agency thinking.

Abstract
Increasing career and life development hope (CLDH) is critical for the career and life pursuits of non-engaged youths (NEY) who face various disadvantages in the school-to-work transition, especially considering current challenging labor market conditions and the impacts of the pandemic. Nevertheless, research that explores the assessment of CLDH among NEY is scarce. To address this gap, this study aimed to develop and validate a CLDH measurement instrument. A total of 1998 NEY aged 13-29 years in Hong Kong participated in our study. Exploratory factor analysis of the 20-item CLDH scale suggested a two-factor structure-career and life development pathways (CLDP) and career and life development agency (CLDA)-which accounted for 63.08% of the total variance. The confirmatory factor analysis results show a good model fit (CFI = 0.934, TLI = 0.926, RMSEA = 0.060, 90% CI [0.055, 0.065], SRMR = 0.042) and all the items significantly represented the corresponding sub-constructs. The results also demonstrate a satisfactory internal consistency for all subscales and the full scale (0.89-0.95). Sub-group consistency across subsamples categorized by gender, age, and years of residence in Hong Kong was indicated. Correlations between the CLDH scale and subscales with other career-related and social well-being outcomes (i.e., youth career development competency, career adaptability, civic engagement, social contribution, and social integration) showed good concurrent validity. Our results support that the CLDH scale is a valid and reliable tool for measuring NEY's hope for career and life development in the Hong Kong context. Theoretical and practical implications of the findings are also discussed.

Abstract
In this review of the central tenets of hope theory, we examine the meta-theoretical, theoretical, and methodological foundations of the literature base. Our analysis moves from a broad examination of the research landscape in hope theory across disciplines, to a deeper investigation of the empirical literature in university students. This review highlights the significant impact of this body of research in advancing our understanding of aspects of thriving characterized by hope. However, we also evidence several limitations that may impede the advancement of the next wave of growth in this field. To address these limitations, we argue for an interdisciplinary approach to expanding the meta-theoretical, theoretical, and methodological horizons, enabling a more dynamic systems approach to the study of hope. Drawing on the intersection of positive psychology with systems thinking, we describe a methodological approach that enables a deeper examination of the processes and interactions through which hope emerges, using an analysis of the lived experience of young people. It is proposed that this research agenda will bring to life an alternate story about the resourcefulness of our youth through their own voice, enabling us to leverage this in the design of more effective strategies to facilitate hope in the future. This research agenda provides a roadmap that will provide alternative methodologies that address the current limitations in the field of hope research and, importantly, can provide fuel to spur on the acceleration of the next wave of research and practice in the field of positive psychology more broadly.

Abstract
Following the conservation of resources, social-cognitive and hope theories, the goals of this study were to identify the role of self-efficacy, proactive coping, and hope as mediators in the relations between learning difficulties and loneliness distress. A questionnaire was sent to current and past students. The sample consisted of 498 participants. The results demonstrated that individuals with learning difficulties reported higher levels of loneliness compared with individuals without learning difficulties. Moreover, self-efficacy, proactive coping, and hope mediated the relations between levels of learning difficulties and loneliness. Specifically, the final model emphasized the important role of hopeful beliefs, since hope mediated the relations between learning difficulties, self-efficacy, and proactive coping with loneliness. In terms of practical implications, professionals' awareness as well as psychoeducational programs could be tailor-made to enhance hopeful beliefs and reduce loneliness.

Abstract
The present study explored the effects of school connectedness and academic self-efficacy beliefs on academic performance among male and female high school students. It was hypothesized that hope would mediate the effects of school connectedness and academic self-efficacy beliefs on academic performance. The statistical population of the study included all high school students in a city of Iran, from whom 500 individuals were selected as the study sample using multistage random sampling. To collect the required data, three questionnaires - i.e., academic self-efficacy subscale from the Patterns of Adaptive Learning Scale by Midgley et al., Children's Hope Scale by Snyder et al., and Brown and Evans' School Connectedness Scale - were used. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was also applied to evaluate the proposed model, and the results indicated the statistical significance of all the path coefficients between the variables. The model showed the positive and significant relation of school connectedness, academic self-efficacy beliefs, and hope with academic performance and the relation of school connectedness and academic self-efficacy beliefs with hope. The fit indices showed that the model was well-fitted. Furthermore, the significance of all the indirect relationships was also confirmed. We concluded that, the high levels of school connectedness and academic self-efficacy are associated with high academic performance and hope seems to be an important mediator of these relationships.

Abstract
Objectives The COVID‐19 epidemic is affecting the entire world and hence provides an opportunity examine how people from different countries engage in hopeful thinking. The aim of this study was to examine the potentially facilitating role of perceived social support vis‐à‐vis hope as well as the mediating role of loneliness between perceived social support and hope. This mediating model was tested concurrently in the UK, the USA, and Israel. Methods In April 2020, as the first wave of the virus struck the three aforementioned countries, we assessed perceived social support, loneliness, and hope in 400 adults per country (N = 1,200). Assessments in the UK/USA were conducted via the Prolific platform, whereas in Israel they were conducted via Facebook/WhatsApp. Results In all three countries, perceived social support predicted elevated hope, although the effect was smallest in the UK. Loneliness mediated this effect in all three countries, although full mediation was attained only in the UK. Conclusions Perceived social support may facilitate hope in dire times, possibly through the reduction of loneliness. Practitioner Points Findings are consistent with respect to the potentially protective role of perceived social support vis‐à‐vis hope. Perceived social support may increase hope through decreasing loneliness. In the UK, the above‐noted mediating effect of loneliness appears to be stronger than in Israel and the USA. Elevated levels of perceived social support should serve as a desired outcome in individual and group psychotherapy, as well as in community based interventions.

Abstract
The interplay between sense of entitlement and hope might have a unique contribution to mothers of children with developmental disabilities (DD) life satisfaction. Seventy-three mothers of children with DD and 47 mothers of children without DD participated in the study. Mothers of children with DD (vs. without DD) experienced low levels of life satisfaction and high levels of entitlement. The relationship between being a mother of children with DD and life satisfaction was mediated by the interaction between sense of entitlement and hope. Higher entitlement was negatively related to life satisfaction when mothers' hope was low and positively related to life satisfaction when mothers' hope was high. Entitlement can act as a resource for life satisfaction, depending on hope levels.

Abstract
Positive psychological coaching (PPC) has emerged as a popular "paradigm" for practitioners interested in the professional development of people. A recent review consolidated the literature on PPC and produced a 5-phase positive psychological coaching model aimed at facilitating professional growth. However, little is known about practically operationalizing each phase of the coaching process (i.e., how to facilitate each phase and which underlying tools and techniques could be employed to do so). As such, the purpose of this systematic review was to address this limitation by (a) determining which coaching tools and techniques are proposed within the coaching literature and (b) classifying the identified tools and techniques into the respective phases of PPC model. The investigation used a two-step approach by conducting a systematic literature review (to identify various PPC tools/techniques) followed by an iterative heuristic classification process (to assign these PPC tools/techniques to a known PPC model). The systematic literature review resulted in 24 peer-reviewed publications on positive psychological coaching, providing 117 different coaching tools that could be condensed into 18 overarching coaching techniques. The iterative classification process showed that most techniques and tools are useful in at least two phases. Interestingly, experts still vary in opinion on the timing and application of these specific techniques and tools within the positive psychological coaching process. This study provides researchers and practitioners with practical guidelines to facilitate a positive psychological coaching process.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Symptoms of general psychological distress disrupt goal pursuit; however, not everyone is equally impacted by distress when pursuing goals. We tested whether hope, self-efficacy, and/or grit buffered the impact of symptoms of general psychological distress on longitudinal goal progress. METHOD Undergraduate students reported on these constructs and, 2 months later, their progress toward five personal goals (N = 117). RESULTS Although greater levels of baseline psychological distress predicted less goal progress, the impact of psychological distress on goal progress was moderated by hope, β = .20, SE = 0.07, p < .01. More specifically, at higher hope, participants reported similar goal progress regardless of baseline distress symptoms, while at lower hope, baseline distress was negatively associated with goal progress. CONCLUSION Hope may function as a buffer against the association between general psychological distress and impaired goal progress.

Abstract
Introduction: The worldwide emergence of COVID-19 has been associated with
diverse consequences, including anxiety. Hope is believed to act as a motivation to enable
one to cope with the anxiety. This study was conducted to identify the role of hope in
alleviating anxiety due to the COVID-19 outbreak during the primary phase among
community dwellers in Iran.
Methods: This cross-sectional study recruited 3,565 subjects with the convenience
sampling method. Data collection tools used included the COVID-19 knowledge checklist,
Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7) questionnaires and Snyder Hope Scale. Participants
were asked to fill in the questionnaires online. The data were analysed using descriptive
and inferential statistics (multivariate linear regression analysis).
Results: Participants’ mean scores of anxiety and hope were 6.06±4.52 and 31.27±4.52,
respectively. The results indicated that 27.1% of the changes in the anxiety scores were
predictable with some of the variables examined in this study. A high score of hope was
directly associated with a lower level of anxiety. In addition, the number of hours spent
following news and information on COVID-19 was significantly related to anxiety level.
Moreover, female gender, urban residence, and having relatives suffering from COVID-19
were significantly related to a higher level of anxiety (P<0.05).
Conclusion: The morbidity and mortality associated with the COVID-19 outbreak had
brought a lot of anxiety among community dwellers. Hope, potentially, can contribute
to overcoming anxiety. Therefore, health policymakers can introduce appropriate social
interventions to enable the community to cope with stress and anxiety.

Abstract
This paper describes a reformulated contextual model that uses cognitive theory (dual process theory), motivation theory (personality) and behavioral adaptation (self-correcting control systems) to show how anxiety and depression are caused, treated and prevented by an interaction between people and contexts. Depression and anxiety are the result of implicit beliefs (not cognitions) that all experience is unrewarding and threatening, these being components of the implicit belief that life is bad. Implicit beliefs are formed automatically from contextual cues and in healthy individuals are consistent with rational appraisal. They become more negative than reality through a process of adaptation when behaviors, directed by rational thinking, repeatedly create cues that signify lack of reward or threat. Such behaviors occur when social or other obligations lead people to choose behaviors that fail to satisfy their own unique goals in life and approach threatening situations, contrary to their automatic reactions. Therapeutic interventions and lifestyle change reverse these adaptive processes by positive experiences that create positive implicit beliefs, a change effected in different ways by contextual and specific mechanisms both of which correct the same fault of negative implicit beliefs. Effective therapeutic relationships and interventions are achieved by detecting and responding to a patient's unique needs and goals and their associated implicit beliefs. Mental health requires not only that people experience life as good as defined by their own goals and beliefs but also the avoidance of contexts where social and other pressures induce people to behave in ways inconsistent with their automatically generated feelings.

Abstract
PURPOSE Cross-sectional research suggests that thinking about multiple ways to reach goals (hope pathways) and the belief that one can reach them (hope agency) may be adaptive for lung cancer patients. We examined the between-person and within-person associations among aspects of hope agency and pathways thinking, daily fatigue, pain, and functional concerns (e.g., sense of independence, usefulness) among lung cancer patients during active treatment. METHODS Data from a daily diary study were used to examine relations among hope agency, hope pathways, fatigue, pain, and functional concern in 50 patients with advanced lung cancer. Participants were accrued from one outpatient cancer center and completed the study between 2014 and 2015. RESULTS Adjusting for covariates and the previous day's symptoms or concern, patients who engaged in higher pathways thinking reported lower daily symptoms, whereas those who engaged in higher agency thinking reported less functional concern. Within-person increases in pathways thinking were associated with less daily fatigue, pain, and functional concern; within-person increases in agency thinking were associated with less daily fatigue and pain. Models examining symptoms and concerns as predictors of hope suggested within-person increases in functional concern and fatigue and pain were related to lower agency and pathways thinking the same day. Patients with higher fatigue and pain did not report lower agency or pathways thinking, but patients with more functional concern did. CONCLUSIONS Increases in hope pathways thinking may be associated with lower symptoms and better functioning in lung cancer patients. This suggests that it is important to determine the efficacy of interventions that emphasize the pathways the component of hope.
