Women’s political empowerment and child health in the sustainable development era: A global empirical analysis (1990–2016)

Transformative strategies for enhancing women's resilience to climate change: A policy perspective for low- and middle-income countries

This policy paper advocates for a transformative strategy to address the disproportionate impact of climate change on women in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), emphasizing the need to integrate gender considerations into climate resilience initiatives. Recognizing the multifaceted nature of women's vulnerabilities, the paper calls for the dismantling of discriminatory socio-cultural norms and the enhancement of women's capacities through digital health literacy, political empowerment, and the protection of sexual and reproductive health rights. Focusing on the health implications of climate change, particularly for pregnant women and newborns, the paper promotes a multi-sectoral approach that strengthens health systems and encourages community-based interventions. It underscores the importance of incorporating gender perspectives into climate adaptation and mitigation strategies, advocating for tailored health services in LMICs, and promoting women's active involvement in climate-related decision-making processes. The methodology involves a qualitative, expert, and narrative synthesis of existing literature and policy analysis. The paper synthesizes existing research and policy recommendations to argue for a comprehensive policy framework and backs it with case studies from LMICs. This framework recognizes the complex interplay between women's vulnerabilities and climate change, advocating for women's empowerment as central to climate resilience efforts in LMICs. By integrating gender perspectives, enhancing health services for women, and fostering international collaboration, it proposes a holistic approach to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change on women's health and well-being. This approach not only acknowledges the specific challenges faced by women but also leverages their unique insights and experiences, positioning them as pivotal contributors to global climate resilience and sustainability efforts.

Early child health in Africa: do ICT and democracy matter?

This article examines the effect of information and communication technologies (ICT) and democracy on early child health using data from 51 African countries. We first specify and estimate a panel data model using ordinary least squares and two-stage least squares over the period 2001-2019. We apply the Hodrick-Prescott filter before analysis. Our results show that the extension of mobile phone use significantly contributes to the improvement of early child health in Africa. This effect is indifferent to the state or the level of democracy. Also, the internet diffusion plays a positive role in early child health when the democracy environment improves and becomes better. We suggest policies in favour of a large access to ICT tools and internet infrastructure as well as the promotion of democracy in Africa to better prevent infant mortality.

Socioeconomic and contextual determinants of the burden of disease attributable to metabolic risks in childhood

We analyze the socioeconomic and political contextual determinants of the burden of disease attributable to three metabolic risks in children: kidney dysfunction, high fasting plasma glucose, and high body-mass index. We use data from 121 countries. We matched data of the Global Burden of Disease project, World Bank and United Nations databases. The burden of disease is measured with the Disability Adjusted Life Years lost. We explore associations with four groups of variables: (i) income level, which measures differences in socioeconomic conditions between countries; (ii) income inequality, which measures within country inequalities in the income distribution; (iii) health care expenditure, which measures the resources allocated to health and healthcare, and (iv) women empowerment, which we measure in terms of both educational and political participation. Our findings point toward the need to act at the root of the underlying factors underpinning the disease burden, namely: reducing between and, particularly, within-country income inequalities, increasing the role of expenditure on health, and ensuring women empowerment and girls education. To our knowledge, this is the first study that have identified the associations of these variables with the burden of disease that is specifically attributable to metabolic risks in childhood.

Women's Empowerment Status in Menopausal Transition: A Cross-sectional Study

BACKGROUND

Women's empowerment status in menopausal transition is of great importance due to the increasing trend of life expectancy and population aging. This study was conducted to evaluate the empowerment status of women during the menopausal transition in Gonabad, Iran.

METHODS

This cross-sectional study was conducted in Gonabad city in Northeast of Iran from April 2017 to March 2018. Cluster sampling was used for selecting 680 women who were in the menopausal transition. Demographic questionnaire and Women's Empowerment Status Questionnaire - a researcher-made questionnaire- was used for data collection. Pearson's correlation coefficient, one-way ANOVA, and linear regression were used to analyze the data using SPSS version 16; A p-value less than 0.05 was considered as significant.

RESULTS

The majority of the participants (510; 76.10%) had a high empowerment level. A high empowerment status in the family, economic, social, and health domains was observed in 499 (74.50%), 534 (79.70%), 523 (78.05%), and 493 (73.60%) participants, respectively. The majority of the participants had moderate empowerment status in political (427; 70.40%) and religious domains (464; 69.30%). There was a negative correlation between the total empowerment score and the participants' age (P<0.001), husband's age (P<0.001), and the number of children (P<0.001). There was a positive correlation between the total empowerment score and education (P=0.003) as well as age of marriage (P=0.03).

CONCLUSION

Overall empowerment status of women in menopausal transition in Gonabad -Iran was high. However, in political and religious domains, the status was moderate. We suggest that empowered women should be invited to share their experiences with other females. Development of social networks could provide the basis for sharing the experiences of these women and helps policy makers to develop community empowerment programs.
