Psychometric Properties of the Sensory Processing Measure Preschool-Home among Saudi Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: Pilot Study

Sensory Processing Measure and Sensory Integration Theory: A Scientometric and Narrative Synthesis

Sensory integration theory (SIT), which posits that the neurological process of integrating sensory information from the environment and one's body influences learning and behaviour, and the sensory processing measure (SPM), a psychometric tool with versions for individuals aged 4 months to 87 years, are fundamental to understanding and assessing sensory processing. This study examined the existing evidence on the SPM and SIT using scientometric and narrative methods. A search of Scopus and Web of Science Core Collection from 1983 to 2024 yielded 238 unique records after deduplication. Scientometric analysis, conducted with CiteSpace (Version 6.4.R1) and VOSviewer (Version 1.6.19) explored publication trends, keyword co-occurrences, and citation bursts. A narrative method, based on a purposive sample of studies selected by title relevance from the 238 records, provided qualitative insights into key themes and concepts. Scientometric analysis revealed 11 key clusters, including 'sensory processing behaviour', 'classroom context', and 'using electroencephalogram (EEG) technology', reflecting diverse research areas and a growing publication trend, particularly after 2011. A narrative analysis, guided by these clusters, explored sensory processing differences in children with developmental disorders like autism spectrum disorder (ASD) compared to typically developing children, the relationship between sensory processing and other functional areas, the impact of classroom contexts on sensory processing, the use of EEG in sensory processing disorder (SPD) diagnosis, and the effectiveness of interventions like sound-based therapy and sensory integration therapy. The combined approach highlighted the wide application of the SPM and SIT, informing future research directions, such as longitudinal studies, comparative effectiveness research, and cultural adaptations of assessments and interventions.

Proxy-reported sensory measures for children and adolescents with neurodevelopmental disorders: A systematic review

AIM

To determine the quality and utility of proxy-reported sensory measures for children and adolescents with neurodevelopmental disorders (such as autism spectrum disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, movement disorders, and intellectual disability).

METHOD

We systematically searched 11 databases. We applied the updated Consensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments (COSMIN) Risk of Bias checklist and criteria for good measurement properties to evaluate instrument development and psychometric properties. Findings were summarized using a COSMIN adaptation of Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations.

RESULTS

From 11 databases, 6748 articles were screened. Ninety-one full-length articles were reviewed after removing excluded studies and manual searches conducted by two reviewers. Data were extracted for 12 measures from 20 articles. Of the 12 measures, only three provided sufficient data to evaluate content validity and psychometric measurement properties. The Participation and Sensory Environment Questionnaire-Home (PSEQ-H) was the only measure that satisfied moderate content validity and moderate-to-high quality for measurement properties. These properties included: structural validity, hypothesis testing for construct validity, internal consistency, reliability, and measurement error.

INTERPRETATION

One measure, the PSEQ-H, met eight criteria for good measurement properties. To facilitate evidence-informed clinical decision-making, all psychometric properties of all 12 sensory-based, proxy-reported measures were presented. The importance of consumer engagement in measure development and the need for ongoing evaluation of measures against contemporaneous standards is recommended.

WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS

Three measures provided studies on content validity and psychometric measurement properties. The Participation and Sensory Environment Questionnaire-Home had moderate quality for content validity studies and high-to-moderate quality evidence for psychometric properties. The Participation and Sensory Environment Questionnaire was the only measure that included consumer involvement through qualitative interviews and pilot testing. Consumer involvement in measure development is important for content validity. Ongoing evaluation of measures against contemporaneous standards is recommended.

Case Report: ASI intervention on a child with autism in Saudi Arabia

Background: Ayres Sensory Integration (ASI) is widely employed by occupational therapists working with clients who experience challenges in sensory integration, including those with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, there is a dearth of research examining the feasibility of ASI outside of Western nations. This study documented the barriers associated with ASI in Saudi Arabia and assessed whether the intervention could improve process and participation skills. Methods: Single-Subject experimental design was used. The participant was a 4-year-old girl with ASD from Saudi Arabia. Data were gathered on sensory processing, motor skills, and participation in activities of daily living. The study used semi-structured interviews and assessments (Sensory Integration and Praxis Tests, the Sensory Processing Measure-Preschool, and the Peabody Developmental Motor Scale-2) to develop goals, identify outcome measures, and plan an ASI intervention. Results: Despite the limited availability of resources (e.g., toys, treatment spaces) and Arabic measures, improvements were observed on motor and sensory tasks and in occupational performance. Conclusion: ASI that adheres to the ASI fidelity tool can be of value for Saudi Arabian children with ASD. Additionally, the study provides a stepping-stone to further research for occupational therapists in Saudi Arabia working with children with ASD.

The moderating effect of types of child's neurodevelopmental disorder on the relationship between Indonesian mothers' perception of child's maladaptive behaviour and maternal parenting stress

This study aimed to examine the effect of mother's perception of child's maladaptive behaviour and types of child's neurodevelopment disorder on maternal parenting stress, and examine the role of types of child's neurodevelopmental disorder in moderating the relationship between mother' perception of child's maladaptive behaviours and maternal parenting stress. The mother' perception of child's maladaptive behaviours tested included internalizing and externalizing maladaptive behaviours, while the types of child's neurodevelopmental disorder included intellectual disability (ID), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). A total of 163 mothers of children with different types of neurodevelopmental disorders were included in this study. The data were analysed with regression analysis, t-test, and ANOVA. The results showed that 1) there is an influence of the mother's perception of child's maladaptive behaviours and types of neurodevelopmental disorders on parenting stress; 2) types of child neurodevelopmental disorders moderate the relationship between the mother's perception of child's maladaptive behaviour and maternal parenting stress; 3) mothers of children with ASD experience higher levels parenting stress than mothers of children with ADHD and ID.

An Assessment of the Motor Performance Skills of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder in the Gulf Region

This study aims to determine the prevalence, severity, and nature of the motor abnormalities seen in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) as well as to elucidate the associated developmental profiles. The short-form of the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency, Second Edition (BOT-2) was used to assess various aspects of the motor performance of 119 children with ASD and 30 typically developing children (age range: 6–12 years) from three Gulf states. The results revealed the high prevalence of motor abnormalities among the ASD group when compared with the normative data derived from the BOT-2 manual as well as with the data concerning the typically developing group. The results also indicated that the motor performance of the children with ASD fell within the below-average range according to the BOT-2 cut-off score. Further, the results suggested that the age variable may influence the overall motor performance of children with ASD, since the children’s motor abnormalities may decrease with maturation. The results concerning the specific motor dysfunction profiles seen in individuals with ASD could help practitioners, parents, and educators to better understand the nature of the motor deficits exhibited by children with ASD, which could assist with the design and implementation of treatment and rehabilitation programs for such children. Overall, motor performance represents an important aspect that should be considered during the clinical evaluation of ASD and that should not be ignored during early interventions.
