Sweat rate and sweat composition following active or passive heat re-acclimation: A pilot study

A Janus Textile Capable of Radiative Subambient Cooling and Warming for Multi-Scenario Personal Thermal Management

Textiles with radiative cooling/warming capabilities provide a green and effective solution to personal thermal comfort in different climate scenarios. However, developing multiple-mode textiles for wearing in changing climates with large temperature variation remains a challenge. Here a Janus textile is reported, comprising a polyethersulfone (PES)-Al₂ O₃ cooling layer optically coupled with a Ti₃ C₂ T_x warming layer, which can realize sub-ambient radiative cooling, solar warming, and active Joule heating. Owing to the intrinsically high refractive index of PES and the rational design of the fiber topology, the nanocomposite PES textile features a record high solar reflectance of 0.97. Accompanied by an infrared (IR) emittance of 0.91 in the atmospheric window, sub-ambient cooling of 0.5-2.5 °C is achieved near noontime in humid summer under ≈1000 W m^-2 solar irradiation in Hong Kong. The simulated skin covered with the textile is ≈10 °C cooler than that with white cotton. The Ti₃ C₂ T_x layer provides a high solar-thermal efficiency of ≈80% and a Joule heating flux of 66 W m^-2 at 2 V and 15 °C due to its excellent spectral selectivity and electrical conductivity. The switchable multiple working modes enable effective and adaptive personal thermal management in changing environments.

Nonwoven/Nanomembrane Composite Functional Sweat Pads

Sweat is a natural body excretion produced by skin glands, and the body cools itself by releasing salty sweat. Wetness in the underarms and feet for long durations causes itchiness and an unpleasant smell. Skin-friendly reusable sweat pads could be used to absorb sweat. Transportation of moisture and functionality is the current challenge that many researchers are working on. This study aims to develop a functional and breathable sweat pad with antimicrobial and quick drying performance. Three layered functional sweat pads (FSP) are prepared in which the inner layer is made of an optimized needle-punched coolmax/polypropylene nonwoven blend. This layer is then dipped in antimicrobial ZnO solution (2, 4, and 6 wt.%), and super absorbent polymer (SAP) is embedded, and this is called a functional nonwoven (FNW1) sheet. Electrospun nanofiber-based nanomembranes of polyamide-6 are optimized for bead-free fibers. They are used as a middle layer to enhance the pad's functionality, and the third layer is again made of needle-punched optimized coolmax/polypropylene nonwoven sheets. A simple nonwoven-based sweat pad (SSP) is also prepared for comparison purposes. Nonwoven sheets are optimized based on better comfort properties, including air/water vapor permeability and moisture management (MMT). Nonwoven webs having a higher proportion of coolmax show better air permeability and moisture transfer from the inner to the outer layer. Antimicrobial activity of the functional nonwoven layer showed 8 mm of bacterial growth, but SSP and FSP showed only 6 mm of growth against Staphylococcus aureus. FSP showed superior comfort and antibacterial properties. This study could be a footstone toward highly functional sweat pads with remarkable comfort properties.

Wearable Sensor for Continuous Sweat Biomarker Monitoring

In recent years, wearable sensors have enabled the unique mode of real-time and noninvasive monitoring to develop rapidly in medical care, sports, and other fields. Sweat contains a wide range of biomarkers such as metabolites, electrolytes, and various hormones. Combined with wearable technology, sweat can reflect human fatigue, disease, mental stress, dehydration, and so on. This paper comprehensively describes the analysis of sweat components such as glucose, lactic acid, electrolytes, pH, cortisol, vitamins, ethanol, and drugs by wearable sensing technology, and the application of sweat wearable devices in glasses, patches, fabrics, tattoos, and paper. The development trend of sweat wearable devices is prospected. It is believed that if the sweat collection, air permeability, biocompatibility, sensing array construction, continuous monitoring, self-healing technology, power consumption, real-time data transmission, specific recognition, and other problems of the wearable sweat sensor are solved, we can provide the wearer with important information about their health level in the true sense.

A crossover control study of three methods of heat acclimation on the magnitude and kinetics of adaptation

Central question to the study? Are primary indices of heat adaptation (e.g., expansion of plasma volume and reduction in resting core temperature) differentially affected by the three major modes of short-term heat acclimation, i.e., exercise in the heat, hot water immersion and sauna? Main finding and its importance? The three modes elicited typical adaptations expected with short-term heat acclimation, however these were not significantly different between modes. This comparison has not previously been done and highlights that individuals can expect similar adaptation to heat regardless of the mode used.

ABSTRACT

Heat acclimation (HA) can improve heat tolerance and cardiovascular health. The mode of HA potentially impacts the magnitude and time course of adaptations, but almost no comparative data exist. We therefore investigated adaptive responses to three common modes of HA, particularly with respect to plasma volume. Within a crossover repeated-measures design, 13 physically-active participants (5 female) undertook four, 5-d HA regimes (60 min/d) in randomised order, separated by ≥4 wk. Rectal temperature (T_re ) was clamped at neutrality via 36.6C (thermoneutral) water immersion (TWI; i.e., control condition), or raised by 1.5°C via heat stress in 40°C water (HWI), Sauna (55°C, 52% RH), or exercise in humid heat (40°C, 52% RH; ExH). Adaptation magnitude was assessed as the pooled response across days 4 to 6, while kinetics was assessed via the 6-d time series. Plasma volume expansion was similar in all heated conditions but only higher than TWI in ExH (by 4%, p = 0.036). Approximately two thirds of the expansion was attained within the initial 24 h and was moderately related to that present on day 6, regardless of HA mode (r = 0.560-0.887). Expansion was mediated by conservation of both sodium and albumin content, with little evidence for these having differential roles between modes (p = 0.706 and 0.320, respectively). Resting T_re decreased by 0.1-0.3°C in all heated conditions, and SBP decreased by 4 mm Hg, but not differentially between conditions (p≥0.137). In conclusion, HA mode did not substantially affect the magnitude or rate of adaptation in key resting markers of short-term HA. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

The effect of sweat sample storage condition on sweat content

Due to time and logistical constraints sweat samples cannot always be analyzed immediately. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of storage temperature and duration on sweat electrolyte and metabolite concentrations. Twelve participants cycled for 60 min at 40 W.m⁻² in 33°C and 65% RH. Using the absorbent patch technique, six sweat samples were collected from the posterior torso. Sweat from the six samples was mixed, divided again over six samples and placed in sealed vials. Sweat sodium, chloride, potassium, ammonia, lactate and urea concentrations in one sample were determined immediately. Two samples were stored at room temperature (~25°C, 42% RH) for 7 and 28 days respectively. The remaining samples were frozen at −20°C for 1 h, 7 or 28 days respectively before analysis. Sweat sodium, chloride, potassium and urea concentrations were not affected by storage temperature and duration. Sweat lactate decreased (−1.8 ± 1.8 mmol.L⁻¹, P = 0.007) and ammonia concentrations increased (5.1 ± 3.9 mmol.L⁻¹, P = 0.017) after storage for 28 days at 25°C only. The storage temperature and duration did not affect sodium, chloride, potassium and urea concentrations. However, sweat samples should not be stored for longer than 7 days at 25°C to obtain reliable sweat lactate and ammonia concentrations. When samples are frozen at −20°C, the storage duration could be extended to 28 days for these components.

The effect of short and continuous absorbent patch application on local skin temperature underneath

Objective. By attaching absorbent patches to the skin to collect sweat, an increase in local skin temperature (T_sk) underneath the patches seems unavoidable. Yet this effect has not been quantified. The present study investigates the effect of absorbent patch application on localT_skunderneath.Approach. Ten healthy participants cycled for 60 min at an exercise intensity relative to their body surface area (40 W.m^-2) in three environmental conditions (temperate: 25 °C 45% RH, hot-humid: 33 °C 65% RH and hot-dry: 40 °C 30% RH). The effect of short sweat sampling (i.e. from min 25-30 to min 55-60) onT_skwas examined on the right scapula.T_skof the left scapula served as control. The effect of continuous sweat sampling (i.e. four consecutive 15 min periods) onT_skwas examined on the right upper arm.T_skof the left upper arm served as control.Main results. Neither short nor continuous application of absorbent sweat patches affectedT_skunderneath the patches in the hot-humid and hot-dry condition (P > 0.05). In the temperate condition, continuous application led to a significant increase inT_skunderneath the patches during the first and second minute. This increase remained throughout the experiment (1.8 ± 0.6 °C;P < 0.001). Short application of sweat patches did not affect the localT_skunderneath (P > 0.05) in the temperate condition.Significance. To avoid a significant increase in localT_skunderneath sweat patches, continuous application should be prevented in, especially, a temperate condition. Timely removal of sweat patches should be taken into account during longer periods of collecting sweat in field or laboratories settings.
