Phase transition and elastic constants of zirconium from first-principles calculations

Effectively Modulating Oxygen Vacancies in Flower-Like δ-MnO2 Nanostructures for Large Capacity and High-Rate Zinc-Ion Storage

In recent years, manganese-based oxides as an advanced class of cathode materials for zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) have attracted a great deal of attentions from numerous researchers. However, their slow reaction kinetics, limited active sites and poor electrical conductivity inevitably give rise to the severe performance degradation. To solve these problems, herein, we introduce abundant oxygen vacancies into the flower-like δ-MnO2 nanostructure and effectively modulate the vacancy defects to reach the optimal level (δ-MnO2-x-2.0). The smart design intrinsically tunes the electronic structure, guarantees ion chemisorption-desorption equilibrium and increases the electroactive sites, which not only effectively accelerates charge transfer rate during reaction processes, but also endows more redox reactions, as verified by first-principle calculations. These merits can help the fabricated δ-MnO2-x-2.0 cathode to present a large specific capacity of 551.8 mAh g-1 at 0.5 A g-1, high-rate capability of 262.2 mAh g-1 at 10 A g-1 and an excellent cycle lifespan (83% of capacity retention after 1500 cycles), which is far superior to those of the other metal compound cathodes. In addition, the charge/discharge mechanism of the δ-MnO2-x-2.0 cathode has also been elaborated through ex situ techniques. This work opens up a new pathway for constructing the next-generation high-performance ZIBs cathode materials.

Pressure-induced structural phase transitions of zirconium: anab initiostudy based on statistical ensemble theory

Recently, we put forward a direct integral approach to solve the partition function with ultrahigh efficiency and precision, which enables the rigorous ensemble theory to investigate phase behaviors of realistic condensed matters and has been successfully applied to the phase transition of vanadium metal (Ninget al2022J. Phys.: Condens. Matter34425404). In this work, the approach is applied to the structural phase transitions of zirconium metal under compressions up to 160 GPa and ultrahigh calculation precision is achieved. For the obtained equation of state with pressure over 40 GPa, the deviations from latest experiments are within0.7%and the computed transition pressure ofα→ωis 6.93 GPa, which is about five times larger than previous theoretical predictions and in excellent agreement with the measured range of 5-15 GPa. Our results support the argument that there is no existence of the isostructural phase transition of Zr metal that was asserted by recent experimental observations.

Structural Stability, Thermodynamic and Elastic Properties of Cubic Zr0.5Nb0.5 Alloy under High Pressure and High Temperature

Structural stability, sound velocities, elasticity, and thermodynamic properties of cubic Zr0.5Nb0.5 alloy have been investigated at high pressure and high temperature by first-principles density functional calculations combined with the quasi-harmonic Debye model. A pronounced pressure-induced shear wave velocity stiffening in Zr0.5Nb0.5 alloy is observed at pressures above ~11 GPa, owing to its structural instability under high pressure, whose anomalous behavior is also observed in the end members of Zr-Nb alloys for Zr at ~13 GPa and for Nb at ~6 GPa upon compression, respectively. In addition, high-pressure elasticity and elastic-correlated properties of cubic Zr0.5Nb0.5 are reported, as compared with previous studies on Zr-Nb alloys with different compositions. A comprehensive study of the thermodynamic properties of cubic Zr0.5Nb0.5, such as heat capacity (Cv), thermal expansion coefficients (α), and Debye temperature (ΘD), are also predicted at pressures and temperatures up to 30 GPa and 1500 K using the quasi-harmonic Debye model.

Development of Density-Functional Tight-Binding Parameters for the Molecular Dynamics Simulation of Zirconia, Yttria, and Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia

In this work, a set of density-functional tight-binding (DFTB) parameters for the Zr-Zr, Zr-O, Y-Y, Y-O, and Zr-Y interactions was developed for bulk and surface simulations of ZrO₂ (zirconia), Y₂O₃ (yttria), and yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) materials. The parameterization lays the ground work for realistic simulations of zirconia-, yttria-, and YSZ-based electrolytes in solid oxide fuel cells and YSZ-based catalysts on long timescales and relevant size scales. The parameterization was validated for the zirconia and yttria polymorphs observed under standard conditions based on density functional theory calculations and experimental data. Additionally, we performed DFTB-based molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to compute structural and vibrational properties of these materials. The results show that the parameters can give a qualitatively correct phase ordering of zirconia, where the tetragonal phase is more stable than the cubic phase at a lower temperature. The lattice parameters are only slightly overestimated by 0.05-0.1 Å (2% error), still within the typical accuracy of first-principles methods. Additionally, the MD results confirm that zirconia and yttria phases are stable against transformations under standard conditions. The parameterization also predicts that vibrational spectra are within the range of 100-1000 cm^-1 for zirconia and 100-800 cm^-1 for yttria, which is in good agreement with predictions both from full quantum mechanics and a recently developed classical force field. To further demonstrate the advantage of the developed DFTB parameters in terms of computational resources, we conducted DFTB/MD simulations of the YSZ4 and YS12 models containing approximately 750 atoms.

Density-Functional Tight-Binding Parameters for Bulk Zirconium: A Case Study for Repulsive Potentials

Density-functional tight-binding (DFTB) parameters are presented for the simulation of the bulk phases of zirconium. Electronic parameters were obtained using a band structure fitting strategy, while two-center repulsive potentials were created by particle swarm optimization. As objective functions for the repulsive potential fitting, we employed the Birch-Murnaghan equations of state for hexagonal close-packed (HCP), body-centered cubic (BCC) and ω phases of Zr from density-functional theory (DFT). When fractional atomic coordinates are not allowed to change in the generation of the equation-of-state curves, long-range repulsive DFTB potentials are able to almost perfectly reproduce equilibrium structures, relative DFT energies of the bulk phases, and bulk moduli. However, the same potentials lead to artifacts in the DFTB potential energy surfaces when atom positions in the unit cell are allowed to fully relax during the change of unit cell parameters. Conventional short-range repulsive DFTB potentials, while inferior in their ability to reproduce DFT bulk energetics, are able to correctly reproduce the qualitative shape of the DFT potential energy surfaces, including the location of global minima, and can therefore be considered more transferable.

Pressure effect on stabilities of self-interstitials in HCP-zirconium

The self-interstitial atoms (SIAs) mediate the evolution of micro-structures which is crucial in understanding the instabilities of hexagonal close packed (HCP) structures. Taking zirconium as a prototype, we investigate the pressure effect on the stabilities of SIAs using first-principles calculations based on density-functional theory. We found that the pressure greatly affects the stability of the SIAs. The SIAs in basal planes are more stable under pressure. The SIA configuration of the lowest formation energy changes from basal octahedral (BO) to octahedral (O) at a pressure of 21 GPa. The lowest formation enthalpy configuration switches from BO to S (split-dumbbell) at the pressure of 30 GPa. The formation volumes of SIAs decrease monotonically in response to an increase in pressure. Our results reveal that it is important to take pressure effects into account when predicting the micro-structural evolution of HCP structures.
