Epitaxial growth of visible to infra-red transparent conducting In2O3 nanodot dispersions and reversible charge storage as a Li-ion battery anode

A Lamellar Yolk-Shell Lithium-Sulfur Battery Cathode Displaying Ultralong Cycling Life, High Rate Performance, and Temperature Tolerance

The shuttling behavior and slow conversion kinetics of the intermediate lithium polysulfides are the severe obstacles for the application of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries over a wide temperature range. Here, an engineered lamellar yolk-shell structure of In2 O3 @void@carbon for the Li-S battery cathode is developed for the first time to construct a powerful barrier that effectively inhibits the shuttling of polysulfides. On the basis of the unique nanochannel-containing morphology, the continuous kinetic transformation of sulfur and polysulfides is confined in a stable framework, which is demonstrated by using X-ray nanotomography. The constructed Li-S battery exhibits a high cycling capability over 1000 cycles at 1.0 C with a capacity decay rate as low as 0.038% per cycle, good rate performance, and temperature tolerance at -10, 25, and 50 °C. A nondestructive in situ monitoring method of the interfacial reaction resistance in different cycling stages is proposed, which provides a new analysis perspective for the development of emerging electrochemical energy-storage systems.

High-Performance On-Chip Supercapacitors Based on Mesoporous Silicon Coated with Ultrathin Atomic Layer-Deposited In2O3 Films

On-chip supercapacitors have attracted considerable attention because of their high power density, long cycling life, and compatibility with integrated circuits. One critical drawback that restricts their practical application is the low energy density. In this work, low-resistivity mesoporous silicon with a high aspect ratio is prepared by Pt film-assisted chemical etching and utilized as the scaffold of the supercapacitors. Subsequently, low-resistivity (<0.0015 Ω·cm) and ultrathin In₂O₃ films are coated on the mesoporous silicon scaffold by atomic layer deposition at 200 °C, serving as the active electrode material. The electrochemical measurements reveal that the coating of the In₂O₃ film remarkably improves the performance of the supercapacitors compared with those without the In₂O₃ coating. The supercapacitors with a 4.5 nm In₂O₃ film coating exhibit a capacitance density of 1.36 mF/cm² at a scan rate of 10 mV/s as well as a better stability against the scan rate. In addition, it is found that the pristine mesoporous silicon walls are collapsed after 400 times of sweeping while those with the In₂O₃ film coating are still intact even after 2000 times of sweeping. Meanwhile, a high energy density is also achieved without sacrificing the power performance.

Superexponential fluctuation relation for dichotomous work reservoir systems

This paper introduces an analytical description of the probability density function of the dissipated and injected powers p(j_{dis}) and p(j_{inj}), respectively, in a paradigmatic nonequilibrium damped system in contact with a work reservoir that is analytically represented by telegraph noise and to which one can assign an effective temperature. This approach is able to overcome the well-known impossibility of obtaining closed solutions to steady-state distributions of this system and allows determining a superexponential fluctuation relation of the injected power, which is not even asymptotically exponential as for (shot-noise) Poissonian reservoirs. In the white-noise limit, that relation converges to the exponential formula that is standard in thermal systems; however, the distribution of the injected power remains quite different from that of the latter instance. Surprisingly, it is actually shown that a Gaussian distribution, which is archetypal of thermal systems, for the injected power can be achievable only for athermal reservoirs of this kind.

Color-Coded Batteries - Electro-Photonic Inverse Opal Materials for Enhanced Electrochemical Energy Storage and Optically Encoded Diagnostics

For consumer electronic devices, long-life, stable, and reasonably fast charging Li-ion batteries with good stable capacities are a necessity. For exciting and important advances in the materials that drive innovations in electrochemical energy storage (EES), modular thin-film solar cells, and wearable, flexible technology of the future, real-time analysis and indication of battery performance and health is crucial. Here, developments in color-coded assessment of battery material performance and diagnostics are described, and a vision for using electro-photonic inverse opal materials and all-optical probes to assess, characterize, and monitor the processes non-destructively in real time are outlined. By structuring any cathode or anode material in the form of a photonic crystal or as a 3D macroporous inverse opal, color-coded "chameleon" battery-strip electrodes may provide an amenable way to distinguish the type of process, the voltage, material and chemical phase changes, remaining capacity, cycle health, and state of charge or discharge of either existing or new materials in Li-ion or emerging alternative battery types, simply by monitoring its color change.

Thermostatistics of a damped bimodal particle

We study the thermostatistics of a damped bimodal particle, i.e., a particle of mass m subject to a work reservoir that is analytically represented by the telegraph noise. Because of the colored nature of the noise, it does not fit the Lévy-Itô class of stochastic processes, making this system an instance of a nonequilibrium system in contact with a non-Gaussian external reservoir. We obtain the statistical description of the position and velocity, namely in the stationary state, as well as the (time-dependent) statistics of the energy fluxes in the system considering no constraints on the telegraph noise features. With that result we are able to give an account of the statistical properties of the large deviations of the injected and dissipated power that can change from sub-Gaussianity to super-Gaussianity depending on the color of the noise. By properly defining an effective temperature for this system, T, we are capable of obtaining an equivalent entropy production-exchange rate equal to the ratio between the dissipation of the medium, γ, and the mass of the particle, m, a relation that concurs with the case of a standard thermal reservoir at temperature, T=T.

Core-shell tin oxide, indium oxide, and indium tin oxide nanoparticles on silicon with tunable dispersion: electrochemical and structural characteristics as a hybrid Li-ion battery anode

Tin oxide (SnO2) is considered a very promising material as a high capacity Li-ion battery anode. Its adoption depends on a solid understanding of factors that affect electrochemical behavior and performance such as size and composition. We demonstrate here, that defined dispersions and structures can improve our understanding of Li-ion battery anode material architecture on alloying and co-intercalation processes of Lithium with Sn from SnO2 on Si. Two different types of well-defined hierarchical Sn@SnO2 core-shell nanoparticle (NP) dispersions were prepared by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) on silicon, composed of either amorphous or polycrystalline SnO2 shells. In2O3 and Sn doped In2O3 (ITO) NP dispersions are also demonstrated from MBE NP growth. Lithium alloying with the reduced form of the NPs and co-insertion into the silicon substrate showed reversible charge storage. Through correlation of electrochemical and structural characteristics of the anodes, we detail the link between the composition, areal and volumetric densities, and the effect of electrochemical alloying of Lithium with Sn@SnO2 and related NPs on their structure and, importantly, their dispersion on the electrode. The dispersion also dictates the degree of co-insertion into the Si current collector, which can act as a buffer. The compositional and structural engineering of SnO2 and related materials using highly defined MBE growth as model system allows a detailed examination of the influence of material dispersion or nanoarchitecture on the electrochemical performance of active electrodes and materials.
