Abstract
The structural properties of halloysite/biopolymer aqueous mixtures were firstly investigated by means of combining different techniques, including small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), electric birefringence (EBR) and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS). Among the biopolymers, non-ionic hydroxypropylcellulose and polyelectrolytes (anionic alginate and cationic chitosan) were selected. On this basis, the specific supramolecular interactions were correlated to the structural behavior of the halloysite/biopolymer mixtures. SANS data were analyzed in order to investigate the influence of the biopolymer adsorption on the halloysite gyration radius. In addition, a morphological description of the biopolymer-coated halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) was obtained by the simulation of SANS curves. EBR experiments evidenced that the orientation dynamics of the nanotubes in the electric field is influenced by the specific interactions with the polymers. Namely, both variations of the polymer charge and/or wrapping mechanisms strongly affected the HNT alignment process and, consequently, the rotational mobility of the nanotubes. FCS measurements with fluorescently labeled biopolymers allowed us to study the aqueous dynamic behavior of ionic biopolymers after their adsorption onto the HNT surfaces. The combination of EBR and FCS results revealed that the adsorption process reduces the mobility in water of both components. These effects are strongly enhanced by HNT/polyelectrolyte electrostatic interactions and wrapping processes occurring in the halloysite/chitosan mixture. The attained findings can be useful for designing halloysite/polymer hybrids with controlled structural properties.

Abstract
Commercially available boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) and their purified form (pBNNTs) were dispersed in aqueous solutions with various dispersants, and their cytotoxicity and drug encapsulation capacity were monitored. Our data suggest that pBNNTs showed an average increase in dispersibility of 37.3% in aqueous solution in the presence of 10 different dispersants. In addition, 100 μg of pBNNTs induced an average decrease in cytotoxicity of 27.4% compared to same amount of BNNTs in normal cell lines. The same amount of pBNNTs can encapsulate 10.4-fold more drug (camptothecin) compared to BNNTs. These data suggest that the purification of BNNTs improves several of their properties, which can be applied to biological experiments and are thus essential in the biological application of BNNTs.

Abstract
pH-Switchable, fluorescent, hybrid, water-dispersible nanomaterials based on boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) and grafted copolymer brushes (poly(acrylic acid-co-fluorescein acrylate) - P(AA-co-FA)) were successfully fabricated in a two-step process. The functionalization of BNNTs was confirmed by spectroscopic, gravimetric and imaging techniques. In contrast to "pure" BNNTs, P(AA-co-FA)-functionalized BNNTs demonstrate intense green fluorescence emission at 520 nm. Under neutral or alkaline pH values, P(AA-co-FA)-functionalized BNNTs are highly emissive in contrast to acidic pH conditions where the fluorescent intensity is absent or low. No increase in the absorption was observed when the suspension pH was increased from 7 to 10. The functionalized BNNTs are easily taken up by human normal prostate epithelium (PNT1A) and human prostate cancer cell lines (DU145) and are suitable for further evaluation in cellular imaging applications.

Abstract
Cell surface engineering, as a practical manifestation of nanoarchitectonics, is a powerful tool to modify and enhance properties of live cells. In turn, cells may serve as sacrificial templates to fabricate cell-mimicking materials. Herein we report a facile method to produce cell-recognising silica imprints capable of the selective detection of human cells. We used HeLa cells to template silica inorganic shells doped with halloysite clay nanotubes. The shells were destroyed by sonication resulting in the formation of polydisperse hybrid imprints that were used to recognise HeLa cells in liquid media supplemented with yeast. We believe that methodology reported here will find applications in biomedical and clinical research.

Abstract
Halloysite nanotubes were used to incorporate anionic surfactant micelles and an organic solvent to generate a cleaning system to be applied in Cultural Heritage restoration. The targeted adsorption is driven by electrostatic interactions based on the nanotubes peculiar charge separation. Namely anionic species are driven to the positively charged inner surface while being prevented from interacting with the halloysite outer surface that possesses a positive charge density. The hybrid organic/inorganic emulsion was characterized by dynamic light scattering. Analysis of the autocorrelation function allowed us to define the presence of surfactant aggregates inside/outside the nanotube lumen as a function of the nanotube/surfactant ratio in an aqueous mixture. The application of this prepared emulsion for the controlled cleaning of a marble artifact is demonstrated. To this purpose, a membrane of nanofibrous polyacrylonitrile was prepared by electrospinning and was applied between the work of art and the cleaning agent to avoid the release of residues on the marble surface. This work represents a further step toward the opportunity to extend the use of emulsions for cleaning protocols for stone-based artifacts or in technological applications where surfactant separation is required by a simple centrifugation/sedimentation method.

Thermal Properties of Multilayer Nanocomposites Based on Halloysite Nanotubes and Biopolymers. JOURNAL OF COMPOSITES SCIENCE 2018. Abstract
This paper reports a novel procedure to fabricate multilayer composite biofilms based on halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) and sustainable polymers. Among the biopolymers, the non-ionic (hydroxypropyl cellulose) and cationic (chitosan) molecules were selected. The nanocomposites were prepared by the sequential casting of ethanol solutions of hydroxypropyl cellulose and aqueous dispersions of chitosan/HNTs. The composition of the bio-nanocomposites was systematically changed in order to investigate the effect of the hydroxypropyl cellulose/HNTs ratio on the thermal properties of the films, which were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry (TG). DSC studies were conducted in the static air (oxidative atmosphere), while TG measurements were carried out under nitrogen flow (inert atmosphere). The analysis of DSC data provided the enthalpy and the temperature for the oxidative degradation of the bio-nanocomposites. These results were helpful to estimate the efficacy of the well-compacted middle layer of HNTs as a flame retardant. TG experiments were performed at a variable heating rate and the collected data were analyzed by the Friedman’s method (non-isothermal thermogravimetric approach) with the aim of studying the kinetics of the hydroxypropyl cellulose degradation in the multilayer nanocomposites. This work represents an advanced contribution for designing novel sustainable nanocomposites with excellent thermal behavior as a consequence of their peculiar multilayer structure.

Abstract
Hexagonal boron nitrides (hBNs) have recently been investigated for several novel applications due to their unique properties such as biocompatibility, superhydrophobicity, electrical insulation, and thermal and chemical stability. In addition, their biodegradation products have recently reported to have therapeutic effect on certain cancer types. hBNs are easily synthesized from boron and nitrogen precursors at moderately low temperatures. However, crystallinity and yield vary depending on the type of precursor, reaction temperature, and duration. In this study, a simple one-step hBNs synthesis method is reported without a catalyst, which might be an undesired contaminant for biomedical applications. The influence of boron precursors (boric acid, colemanite, or boron trioxide) on hBNs crystallinity, stability, and biodegradation in suspensions containing oxidative and hydrolytic degradation agents is investigated with the aim of their possible application in biomedicine. We found that the choice of boron precursor is a critically important parameter controlling the hBNs crystallinity and dependently influencing the biodegradation rate.

Abstract
The review provides an overview of the mesoporous inorganic particles employed as drug delivery systems for controlled and sustained release of drugs. We have classified promising nanomaterials for drug delivery on the basis of their natural or synthetic origin. Nanoclays are available in different morphologies (nanotubes, nanoplates and nanofibers) and they are typically available at low cost from natural resources. The surface chemistry of nanoclays is versatile for targeted modifications to control loading and release properties. Synthetic nanomaterials (imogolite, laponite and mesoporous silica) present the advantages of well-established purity and availability with size features that are finely controlled. Both nanoclays and inorganic synthetic nanoparticles can be functionalized forming organic/inorganic architectures with stimuli-responsive features.

Abstract
Novel alignment coating with temperature-tuned anchoring for nematic liquid crystals (NLCs) was successfully fabricated in three step process, involving polymerization of poly(cholesteryl methacrylate) (PChMa) from oligoproxide grafted to the glass surface premodified with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane. Molecular composition, thickness, wettability of the PChMa coating and its alignment action for a NLC were examined with time of flight-secondary ion mass spectrometry, ellipsometry, contact angle measurements, polarization optical microscopy and commercially produced PolScope technique allowing for mapping of the optic axis and optical retardance within the microscope field view. We find that the PChMa coating provides a specific monotonous increase (decrease) in the tilt angle of the NLC director with respect to the substrates normal upon heating (cooling) referred to as anchoring tuning.
