Impact of Nanomedicine in Women's Metastatic Breast Cancer

Metastatic breast cancer is responsible for 90% of mortalities among women suffering from various types of breast cancers. Traditional cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy can cause significant side effects and may not be effective in many cases. However, recent advances in nanomedicine have shown great promise in the treatment of metastatic breast cancer. For example, nanomedicine demonstrated robust capacity in detection of metastatic cancers at early stages (i.e., before the metastatic cells leave the initial tumor site), which gives clinicians a timely option to change their treatment process (for example, instead of endocrine therapy they may use chemotherapy). Here recent advances in nanomedicine technology in the identification and treatment of metastatic breast cancers are reviewed.

Two-Dimensional Nanomaterials beyond Graphene for Biomedical Applications

Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials (e.g., graphene) have shown to have a high potential in future biomedical applications due to their unique physicochemical properties such as unusual electrical conductivity, high biocompatibility, large surface area, and extraordinary thermal and mechanical properties. Although the potential of graphene as the most common 2D nanomaterials in biomedical applications has been extensively investigated, the practical use of other nanoengineered 2D materials beyond graphene such as transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), topological insulators (TIs), phosphorene, antimonene, bismuthene, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and MXenes for biomedical applications have not been appreciated so far. This review highlights not only the unique opportunities of 2D nanomaterials beyond graphene in various biomedical research areas such as bioelectronics, imaging, drug delivery, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine but also addresses the risk factors and challenges ahead from the medical perspective and clinical translation of nanoengineered 2D materials. In conclusion, the perspectives and future roadmap of nanoengineered 2D materials beyond graphene are outlined for biomedical applications.

Graphene-based materials: A new tool to fight against breast cancer

Breast cancer is one of the most common malignant tumors among women population on a global scale, with a huge number of new cases and deaths each year. In recent years, there has been an increasing number of literatures on the discovery and development of novel anti-breast cancer drugs and materials, aiming to increase the survival rate of breast cancer patients. One of the newest tools used for the therapy of breast cancer is graphene-based materials, which have ultra-high surface area as well as unique physical, chemical and mechanical properties. It is reported that graphene-based materials could induce apoptosis in cancer cells while showing low toxicity due to their carbon structure. Therefore, they can be used as nano-drugs or biological carriers to introduce small molecules such as nucleic acids, drugs, or photosensitizers into the human body to achieve treatment goals. This article introduces the synthetic methods for graphene-based materials, as well as the current status and the future prospects of graphene-based materials' application in the treatment of breast cancer.

Non-antibacterial as well as non-anticancer activity of flower extract and its biogenous silver nanoparticles

Silver nanoparticles were synthesized by using the white flower extract of Albizia lebbeck as a source of reducing and capping agents. A. lebbeck white flower extract and silver nanoparticles were checked for their antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeroginosa and Ba cillus subtilis by using Mueller Hinton agar, nutrient agar and Luria Bertani agar using the well diffusion method. The synthesized silver nanoparticles did not show antibacterial activity at lower (0.1-0.4 mg ml^-1) or higher (0.5-2.5 mg ml^-1) concentrations against any of the four organisms on either of the media, even though silver nanoparticles have been well known to show antibacterial activity even at lower concentrations. The non-antibacterial properties of the synthesized silver nanoparticles against all four bacteria were confirmed using viability counting. With this unique non-antibacterial property of biogenous silver nanoparticles observed in this study, it can be stated that case by case evaluation of every synthesized silver nanoparticle needs to be done as there are multiple factors influencing their properties. Anticancer activity of these nanoparticles at different concentrations against A549 cancer cells did not show any significant decrease in cell viability highlighting its biocompatible nature. Thus, these silver nanoparticles can be a best suited candidate for drug delivery.
