Reversibly tuning the surface state of Ag via the assistance of photocatalysis in Ag/BiOCl

Degradation of ciprofloxacin by persulfate activated by Fe(III)-doped BiOCl composite photocatalyst

Fe-BOC-X photocatalyst was successfully prepared by solvothermal method. The photocatalytic activity of Fe-BOC-X was determined by ciprofloxacin (CIP), a typical fluoroquinolone antibiotic. Under sunlight irradiation, all Fe-BOC-X showed better CIP removal performance than original BiOCl. In comparison, the photocatalyst with iron content of 50 wt% (Fe-BOC-3) has excellent structural stability and the best adsorption photodegradation efficiency. The removal rate of CIP (10 mg/L) by Fe-BOC-3 (0.6 g/L) reached 81.4% within 90 min. At the same time, the effects of photocatalyst dosage, pH, persulfate, persulfate concentration, and combinations of different systems (PS, Fe-BOC-3, Vis/PS, Vis/Fe-BOC-3, Fe-BOC-3/PS, and Vis/Fe-BOC-3/PS) on the reaction were systematically discussed. In reactive species trapping experiments, electron spin resonance (ESR) signals revealed that the photogenerated holes (h+), hydroxyl radical (•OH), sulfate radical (•SO4-), and superoxide radical (•O2-) played an important role in CIP degradation; hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and sulfate radicals (•SO4-) play a major role. Various characterization methods have demonstrated that Fe-BOC-X has larger specific surface area and pore volume than original BiOCl. UV-vis DRS indicate that Fe-BOC-X has wider visible light absorption and faster photocarrier transfer and provides abundant surface oxygen absorption sites for effective molecular oxygen activation. Accordingly, a large number of active species were produced and participated in the photocatalytic process, thus effectively promoting the degradation of ciprofloxacin. Based on HPLC-MS analysis, two possible decomposition pathways of CIP were finally proposed. The main degradation pathways of CIP are mainly due to the high electron density of piperazine ring in CIP molecule, which is mainly attacked by various free radicals. The main reactions include piperazine ring opening, decarbonylation, decarboxylation, and fluorine substitution. This study can better open up a new way for the design of visible light driven photocatalyst and provide more ideas for the removal of CIP in water environment.

Preparation and application of Ag plasmon Bi3O4Cl photocatalyst for removal of emerging contaminants under visible light

Photocatalytic degradation has been extensively investigated toward the removal emerging contaminants (ECs) from water. In this study, a series of Ag-Bi₃O₄Cl plasmon photocatalysts were synthesized through the photo-deposition of metallic Ag on the Bi₃O₄Cl surface. The effects of plasmon modification on the catalytic performance of bismuth oxychlorides were analyzed. Ag addition did not alter the morphology of Bi₃O₄Cl. With the increasing Ag content, the number of oxygen defects on the catalyst surface first increased and then decreased. Moreover, the surface plasmon resonance effect of Ag suppressed the recombination of electron-hole pairs, promoting the migration and separation of photocarriers and improving the light absorption efficiency. However, the addition of excessive Ag reduced the number of active sites on the Bi₃O₄Cl surface, hindering the catalytic degradation of pollutants. The optimal Ag-Bi₃O₄Cl photocatalyst (Ag ratio: 0.025; solution pH: 9; dosage: 0.8 g/L) achieved 93.8 and 94.9% removal of ciprofloxacin and tetrabromobisphenol A, respectively. The physicochemical and photoelectric properties of Ag-Bi₃O₄Cl were determined through various characterization techniques. This study demonstrates that introducing metallic Ag alters the electron transfer path of the catalyst, reduces the recombination rate of electron-hole pairs, and effectively improves the catalytic efficiency of Bi₃O₄Cl. Furthermore, the pathways of ciprofloxacin degradation products and their biotoxicity were revealed.

Recent advances in photocatalytic decomposition of water and pollutants for sustainable application

Photoinduced reduction and oxidation, the important processes in photocatalytic water splitting and organic degradation, have generated increasing interest to address the energy and environmental issues. In this review, the recent developments in bandgap and interfacial engineering for enhanced light absorption, efficient charge separation and interfacial reaction are focused toward the applications in photocatalytic water splitting and organic degradation. In photoinduced reduction for hydrogen evolution, three major strategies are discussed: cocatalysts, sacrificial agents and heterojunctions. In photoinduced oxidation for organic degradation, three types of emerging pollutants of current concerns are highlighted: organic dyes, pharmaceuticals and volatile organic compounds. The key challenges of promising photocatalysts are discussed for future development and practical application.

Multielement 2D layered material photodetectors

The pronounced quantum confinement effects, outstanding mechanical strength, strong light-matter interactions and reasonably high electric transport properties under atomically thin limit have conjointly established 2D layered materials (2DLMs) as compelling building blocks towards the next generation optoelectronic devices. By virtue of the diverse compositions and crystal structures which bring about abundant physical properties, multielement 2DLMs (ME2DLMs) have become a bran-new research focus of tremendous scientific enthusiasm. Herein, for the first time, this review provides a comprehensive overview on the latest evolution of ME2DLM photodetectors. The crystal structures, synthesis, and physical properties of various experimentally realized ME2DLMs as well as the development in metal-semiconductor-metal photodetectors are comprehensively summarized by dividing them into narrow-bandgap ME2DLMs (including Bi₂O₂X (X = S, Se, Te), EuMTe₃(M = Bi, Sb), Nb₂XTe₄(X = Si, Ge), Ta₂NiX₅(X = S, Se), M₂PdX₆(M = Ta, Nb; X = S, Se), PbSnS₂), moderate-bandgap ME2DLMs (including CuIn₇Se₁₁, CuTaS₃, GaGeTe, TlMX₂(M = Ga, In; X = S, Se)), wide-bandgap ME2DLMs (including BiOX (X = F, Cl, Br, I), MPX₃(M = Fe, Ni, Mn, Cd, Zn; X = S, Se), ABP₂X₆(A = Cu, Ag; B = In, Bi; X = S, Se), Ga₂In₄S₉), as well as topological ME2DLMs (MIrTe₄(M = Ta, Nb)). In the last section, the ongoing challenges standing in the way of further development are underscored and the potential strategies settling them are proposed, which is aimed at navigating the future advancement of this fascinating domain.

Tuning the Active Sites of Atomically Thin Defective Bi12O17Cl2 via Incorporation of Subnanometer Clusters

The introduction of subnanometer clusters as active sites on the surface of photocatalysts for efficiently tuning the selectivity and activity of the photocatalyts is still a challenge. Herein, the subnanometer Ag/AgCl clusters were incorporated on atomically thin defective Bi₁₂O₁₇Cl₂ nanosheets via rebinding with unsaturated Cl atoms. Benefiting from the surficial Bi vacancies (V_Bi) and Bi-O vacancies (V_Bi-O) in this atomically thin architecture, the local atomic arrangement was tuned so that the subnanometer Ag/AgCl clusters were successfully incorporated. An enhancement of photocatalytic activity for NO removal was achieved in which the activity is 3 times higher than that of Bi₁₂O₁₇Cl₂ and 1.8 times higher than that of defective Bi₁₂O₁₇Cl₂. The substitution of the active sites from surficial V_Bi and V_Bi-O to be subnanometer Ag/AgCl clusters enables a tunable redox potential and different reaction mechanisms in NO removal. Moreover, the selectivity of the photoinduced redox reaction on NO oxidation and CO₂ reduction was achieved via introducing an extra energy level.

Enhancing the performance of pollution degradation through secondary self-assembled composite supramolecular heterojunction photocatalyst BiOCl/PDI under visible light irradiation

A novel n-n type inorganic/organic heterojunction of flaky-like BiOCl/PDI photocatalyst was constructed by water bath heating method. Meanwhile, a simple method - secondary self-assembly was used to prepare the BiOCl/PDI with a special band structure. The photocatalytic activities were evaluated by degrading aqueous organic pollutants under visible light (λ > 420 nm). The removal rates of 5 mg L^-1 phenol (non-ionic type), methyl orange (MO, anionic type), rhodamine B (RhB, cationic type) and 10 mg L^-1 RhB by secondary self-assembly BiOCl/PDI (BiOCl/PDI-2) were 8.0%, 3.4%, 27.8% and 78.9% higher than self-assembly BiOCl/PDI (BiOCl/PDI-1) under visible light (λ > 420 nm). The better photocatalytic activity for BiOCl/PDI-2 was attributed to the optimization of energy-band structures, which arose from different exposed surfaces, narrower interplanar spacing and stronger visible light absorption performance. Under acidic condition, BiOCl/PDI-2 showed a good photocatalytic activity, which was not affected by neutral ionic intensity and had good recycling properties. Moreover, the photocatalytic mechanism was explored by free radical capture test and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and contribution of active species was calculated. The main active species of BiOCl/PDI-2 were ·O₂^-, ¹O₂ and h⁺. Our work may provide a route to design efficient inorganic/organic heterojunctions for organic pollutants degradation.

One-step co-precipitation synthesis of novel BiOCl/CeO2composites with enhanced photodegradation of rhodamine B

BiOCl/CeO₂composites were synthesized by a facile one-step co-precipitation method and showed good photodegradation activity of rhodamine B (RhB).
