A new detector concept based on the prompt gamma radiation analysis for In vivo boron monitoring in BNCT

The problem of boron concentration monitoring during the boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) therapy is one of the main challenges of this type of radiotherapy and is directly related to the nature of the interaction of neutrons with mater. Among the available in vivo methods of boron monitoring positron emission tomography seems to be very promising but it requires a new boron carrier with a β+ emitter, which is not yet clinically available. An alternative solution may be the prompt gamma radiation analysis (PGRA) based on the secondary radiation emitted in the interaction of neutrons with the patient's tissues. This method requires, however, compact gamma radiation detection systems sustaining high counting rates and characterized by very good energy resolution. In this contribution, we present state-of-the-art solutions for monitoring in BNCT based on PGRA. Moreover, we describe a new concept of such a system based on position-sensitive scintillator detectors equipped with an anti-Compton shield and data analysis supported with modern artificial intelligence algorithms.

Joint estimation of interaction position and energy deposition in semiconductor SPECT imaging sensors using fully connected neural network

Objective.Pixelated semiconductor detectors such as CdTe and CZT sensors suffer spatial resolution and spectral performance degradation induced by charge-sharing effects. It is critical to enhance the detector property through recovering the energy-deposition and position estimation.Approach.In this work, we proposed a fully-connected-neural-network-based charge-sharing reconstruction algorithm to correct the charge-loss and estimate the sub-pixel position for every multi-pixel charge-sharing event.Main results.Evident energy resolution improvement can be observed by comparing the spectrum produced by a simple charge-sharing addition method and the proposed energy correction methods. We also demonstrate that sub-pixel resolution can be achieved in projections obtained with a small pinhole collimator and an innovative micro-ring collimator.Significance.These achievements are crucial for multiple-tracer SPECT imaging applications, and for other semiconductor detector-based imaging modalities.

Compton imaging for medical applications

Compton imaging exploits inelastic scattering, known as Compton scattering, using a Compton camera consisting of a scatterer detector in the front layer and an absorber detector in the back layer. This method was developed for astronomy, and in recent years, research and development for environmental and medical applications has been actively conducted. Compton imaging can discriminate gamma rays over a wide energy range from several hundred keV to several MeV. Therefore, it is expected to be applied to the simultaneous imaging of multiple nuclides in nuclear medicine and prompt gamma ray imaging for range verification in particle therapy. In addition, multiple gamma coincidence imaging is expected to be realized, which allows the source position to be determined from a single coincidence event using nuclides that emit multiple gamma rays simultaneously, such as nuclides that emit a single gamma ray simultaneously with positron decay. This review introduces various efforts toward the practical application of Compton imaging in the medical field, including in vivo studies, and discusses its prospects.
