Neuromorphic encoding strategies for a noisy magnetic sense

While accurate engineered solutions to determine global position require vast networks of well-maintained transponder stations, many animals can solve this problem using only Earth's magnetic field. Moreover, animals are capable of this feat despite evidence suggesting that the magnetic sense operates at an extremely low signal-to-noise ratio. As such, this sense may provide valuable insights for the engineer. Here, we explore neuromorphic encoding strategies that may underlie this ability in animals and test their ability to accurately encode noisy magnetic information. We describe sparse encoding strategies that may function in this sense, with systems composed of as few as eight receptors and tens of neurons. We also find that neural architecture based on the arthropod central complex (implicated in other orientation tasks) is particularly robust to encoding noisy magnetic field information.

Sensation to navigation: a computational neuroscience approach to magnetic field navigation

Diverse taxa use Earth's magnetic field (i.e., magnetoreception) as a guide during long-distance navigation. However, despite decades of research, specific sensory mechanisms of magnetoreception remain unconfirmed. Necessarily, this has led to theoretical and computational work developing hypotheses of how animals may navigate using magnetoreception. One hypothesized strategy relies on an animal using combinations of magnetic intensity and inclination as a kind of signature to identify a specific region or location. Using these signatures, animals could use a waypoint-based navigation strategy. We show that this navigation strategy is biologically plausible using a close approximation of neural processing to successfully guide an agent in a simulated magnetic field. Moreover, we accomplish this strategy using a processing approach previously utilized for mechanoreception, suggesting processing of Earth's magnetic field may share features with the processing of other, more well-understood sensory systems. Taken together, our results suggest that both for the engineering of novel navigation systems and the study of animal magnetoreception, we should take lessons from other sensory systems.

Design and calibration model of a bioinspired attitude and heading reference system based on compound eye polarization compass

Insects such as honeybees are capable of fusing the information sensed by multiple sensory organs for attitude and heading determination. In this paper, inspired by the sensory fusion mechanism of insects' polarization compass and haltere, a bioinspired polarization-based attitude and heading reference system (PAHRS) is presented. The PAHRS consists of compound eye polarization compass and inertial measurement unit (IMU). By simulating multi-view structure of the dorsal rim area in insects' compound eyes, a non-coplanar 'polarization-opponent (POL)-type' architecture is adopted for the compound eye polarization compass. The polarization compass has multi-directional observation channels, which is capable of adaptively selecting the angle of polarization and obtaining the polarization vectors. Therefore, the environmental adaptability of the polarization compass can be enhanced. In addition, the integration strategy between the compound eye polarization compass and IMU is proposed. Moreover, the sources of system errors are analyzed to improve the heading angle accuracy, based on which a new calibration model is established to compensate the installation errors of the PAHRS. Finally, experiments are carried out under both clear sky and cloudy conditions. The test results show that the error root mean square of heading angle is 0.14° in clear sky, and 0.42° in partly cloudy conditions.

Simulation of Real Defect Geometry and Its Detection Using Passive Magnetic Inspection (PMI) Method

Reinforced concrete is the most commonly used material in urban, road, and industrial structures. Quantifying the condition of the reinforcing steel can help manage the human and financial risks that arise from unexpected reinforced concrete structure functional failure. Also, a quantitative time history of reinforcing steel condition can be used to make decisions on rehabilitation, decommissioning, or replacement. The self-magnetic behavior of ferromagnetic materials is useful for quantitative condition assessment. In this study, a ferromagnetic rebar with artificial defects was scanned by a three-dimensional (3D) laser scanner. The obtained point cloud was imported as a real geometry to a finite element software platform; its self-magnetic behavior was then simulated under the influence of Earth’s magnetic field. The various passive magnetic parameters that can be measured were reviewed for different conditions. Statistical studies showed that 0.76% of the simulation-obtained data of the rebar surface was related to the defect locations. Additionally, acceptable coincidences were confirmed between the magnetic properties from numerical simulation and from experimental outputs, most noticeably at hole locations.

Bioinspired magnetoreception and navigation using magnetic signatures as waypoints

Diverse taxa use Earth's magnetic field in conjunction with other sensory modalities to accomplish navigation tasks ranging from local homing to long-distance migration across continents and ocean basins. However, despite extensive research, the mechanisms that underlie animal magnetoreception are not clearly understood, and how animals use Earth's magnetic field to navigate is an active area of investigation. Concurrently, Earth's magnetic field offers a signal that engineered systems can leverage for navigation in environments where man-made systems such as GPS are unavailable or unreliable. Using a proxy for Earth's magnetic field, and inspired by migratory animal behavior, this work implements a behavioral strategy that uses combinations of magnetic field properties as rare or unique signatures that mark specific locations. Using a discrete number of these signatures as goal waypoints, the strategy navigates through a closed set of points several times in a variety of environmental conditions, and with various levels of sensor noise. The results from this engineering/quantitative biology approach support existing notions that some animals may use combinations of magnetic properties as navigational markers, and provides insights into features and constraints that would enable navigational success or failure. The findings also offer insights into how autonomous engineered platforms might be designed to leverage the magnetic field as a navigational resource.
