Abstract
Introduction The postpartum psychological well-being and quality of life of mothers after caesarean section are poor when compared to mothers following vaginal delivery. Therefore, the study aimed to evaluate the impact of a combination of back massage and affirmation relaxation technique on depression, anxiety, and stress experienced by mothers who had undergone caesarean section. Methodology This interventional study used a pretest-posttest control group design and was quantitative in nature. Twenty-four caesarean section mothers, with 12 in the experimental group and 12 in the control group, were chosen by a purposive sampling technique at Fatima Hospital, Mau, Uttar Pradesh, India, from July 1, 2022, to August 14, 2022. A structured questionnaire on sociodemographic data and a standardised tool, DASS-21 (Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale, 21 items), were used to gather the data. Data collection was done from the experimental and control groups on the 3rd and 6th post-operative days. The experimental group was given a back massage and affirmation relaxation four times a day for 10 minutes each on the 4th, 5th, and 6th post-operative days. The control group mothers received routine health assessment and health education on postnatal care and breastfeeding. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyse the data using IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 26 (Released 2019; IBM Corp., Armonk, New York). The analysis of categorical data was done using frequency and percentage distribution, whereas the analysis of continuous variables was done using mean and standard deviation. The Wilcoxon signed rank test and the Mann-Whitney U test were employed to evaluate the intervention's efficacy. The significance level was set at p < 0.05. Results A total of 24 mothers who have undergone caesarean section participated in the study. Baseline characteristics such as age, type of family, education, parity, type of LSCS, gender of the newborn, birthweight of the newborn, and timing of initiation of breastfeeding were homogeneously distributed in both experimental and control groups. Before intervention, the mean depression score of both the experimental group (8 ± 2.09) and the control group (8.50 ± 2.28), the mean anxiety score of the experimental group (11.67 ± 3.06) and the control group (11.50 ± 2.97), and the mean stress score of the experimental group (10.33 ± 3.17) and the control group (11.00 ± 2.63) were comparable. After intervention, there was a significant reduction in the maternal stress score in the experimental group (6 ± 2.83) compared to the control group (8.67 ± 2.31), which was statistically significant at p < 0.05. The anxiety score was also reduced after intervention in the experimental group (6.50 ± 3.53) compared to the control group (9.17 ± 1.99), which was nearly significant (p = 0.052). The mean depression score between the experimental group (6.50 ± 1.93) and the control group (7 ± 2.49) was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). Conclusion The study findings highlight the potential benefits of affirmation relaxation and back massage for improving the psychological well-being of postpartum women who have had caesarean sections. The advantages of this mother-friendly, cost-effective method should prompt hospitals and health centres to incorporate it into standard postpartum care. Nursing students should also be taught about it as part of their midwifery education.

Abstract
The study aimed to analyze the use of complementary and integrative health practices (CIHPs) during labor and birth in a freestanding birth center. A total of 28 different CIHPs were applied with or used by laboring women. The most adopted CIHPs were mind-body practices (99.9%) and natural products (35.5%), mostly used by primiparous women ( P <.05). Adopting CIHPs can increase care quality, increase positive experiences during childbirth, and promote evidence-based choices.

Abstract
Introduction External applications from anthroposophic medicine (EAAM) are touch-based applications such as rhythmical massages, embrocations, and compresses that serve as components of complementary treatment concepts for various diseases. The aim of this review is to gain an understanding of typical indications and outcomes and to systematically assess the effectiveness and safety of EAAM. Materials and methods Medline/PubMed, CINAHL, the Cochrane Library, Embase, and PsycINFO were searched through May 2021 and supplemented by searches in specialized databases and personal requests to experts in the field. Studies and case reports on EAAM in patients, as well as healthy individuals, were included in the qualitative synthesis. Outcome parameters depending on each study were grouped as effect themes and assigned to study clusters using Thematic Analysis for a thematic overview of effect patterns. Results Four RCTs, 7 cohort studies, 1 mixed-methods, 1 retrospective, 4 qualitative studies, 3 case series, and 25 case reports on EAAM were identified. The analysis indicated various effects of EAAM on physiological as well as psychological health indicators and patterns of effect development. Study quality was found to be high for only 2 studies, and moderate for 1 study, and all remaining 45 studies showed a moderate or high risk of bias or were not ratable with used rating tools. Conclusion The included studies present a wide range of potential indications for EAAM, while showing methodological drawbacks. To determine whether EAAM can be considered an effective treatment option, clinical studies exploring the effect of different EAAM modalities on defined patient groups are recommended for the future. Abstract
In recent years, the usefulness of infrared thermography (IRT) as a valuable supplementary imaging method in medical diagnostics, as well as for assessing the effects of the treatment of musculoskeletal injuries, has been increasingly confirmed. At the same time, great importance is attached to the standards of thermographic research, the fulfillment of which determines the correct methodology and interpretation of the results. This article discusses the medical applications of infrared thermography in musculoskeletal system diseases, with particular emphasis on its usefulness in assessing the therapeutic effects of physical treatments used in rehabilitation. The literature from the last decade that is available in the Medline and Web of Science databases has been reviewed. Among the physiotherapeutic methods used, the following were selected that directly affect the musculoskeletal system: cryotherapy, laser therapy, electrotherapy, diathermy, and massage. The article summarizes all the guidelines and recommendations for IR imaging in medicine and rehabilitation.

Abstract
Introduction: Physiotherapy treatment is a common intervention for low back pain (LBP) patients. These interventions have been related to physiological effects in the central nervous system. Thus, the aim of this study was to analyze the effect of physiotherapy treatment in patients with LBP in the autonomic nervous system activation and subjective pain perception of patients. Methods: A total of 30 male subjects diagnosed with non-specific subacute LBP received a 50 min session consisting of (a) a manual therapy based on joint mobilization and soft tissues techniques in the lumbo-pelvic area, (b) a stretching program, and (c) motor control exercises of the core muscles. The autonomic modification of participants was assessed prior to and after the physiotherapy treatment. Results: Heart rate variability (HRV) analysis reported a significant increase in average RR (p = 0.001), RMSSD (p = 0.008), LRMSSD (p = 0.001), SDNN (p = 0.005), and PNN50 (p = 0.024) after the session. Frequency-domain measures showed a significant increase in LF (p = 0.030) and HF (p = 0.014), and a decrease in LF/HF ratio (p = 0.046). A significant decrease was found in minimum HR values (p = 0.001) and average HR (p = 0.001). Moreover, maximal HR decreased its value from 116.7 ± 26.1 to 113.7 ± 40.8 after intervention. In addition, subjective pain perception (VAS scores) was significantly lower (p = 0.001) in the post-session assessment. Conclusions: Physiotherapy treatment produced an increase in parasympathetic nervous system activation and a decrease in subjective pain perception in non-specific subacute LBP patients.

Abstract
Vasovagal reactions may occur occasionally during electrical stimulation using interferential current (IFC). The purpose of this study was to examine variations in autonomic activity during the application of IFC in asymptomatic participants by analysis of their heart rate variability (HRV). Seventy-three male volunteers were randomly assigned to a placebo group (n = 36; HRV was documented for 10 min, both at rest and during a placebo intervention) and an intervention group (n = 37; HRV was documented for 10 min in two conditions labelled as (1) rest and (2) application of IFC technique on the lumbar segment). The diameters of the Poincaré plot (SD1, SD2), stress score (SS), and the ratio between sympathetic and parasympathetic activity (S/PS) were measured. After interventions, differences amongst the placebo group and the IFC group were found in SD2 (p < 0.001), SS (p = 0.01) and S/PS ratio (p = 0.003). The IFC technique was associated with increased parasympathetic modulation, which could induce a vasovagal reaction. Monitorization of adverse reactions should be implemented during the application of IFC technique. HRV indicators might have a part in prevention of vasovagal reactions. Further studies in patients with lumbar pain are needed to explore possible differences in HRV responses due to the presence of chronic pain.

Abstract
According to the experience of nurses and physiotherapists, the abdomen of constipated people becomes softer after abdominal massage. However, the relationship between the decrease in abdominal stiffness and the benefits of abdominal massage has not been examined quantitatively and is unclear. Furthermore, devices for measuring stiffness have been designed to measure relatively hard areas such as the shoulders and do not take into account the lateral outflow of the target tissue, which can be a problem when measuring the stiffness of soft areas such as the abdomen. To address these issues, this study presents a stiffness sensor suitable for measuring abdominal stiffness and investigates the relationship between the reduction in abdominal stiffness and the benefits of abdominal massage. The solution to prevent the lateral outflow of the target is the realization of a stopper, including a contact detection device, which enables a wide-area contact around the targeted area. The sensor consists of a stopper, probe, spring, and time-of-flight (ToF) sensors. The probe and spring provide appropriate pressure and deformation to the abdomen, whereas the stopper prevents the probe from being pushed into the abdomen more than necessary. The ToF sensor measures the deformation length when the deformation is stopped by the stopper. The abdominal stiffness can be derived from the deformation length. The investigation results indicate that the reduction in abdominal stiffness corresponds to the improvement of the stool condition or the maintenance of a healthy stool condition, whereas the maintenance of abdominal stiffness indicates the maintenance or deterioration of the stool condition.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this article is to describe what needs to be considered in implementing care practices, in this case an integrative care program consisting of anthroposophic treatments, in an intensive care unit (ICU) of a teaching hospital. METHODS We used a pediatric oncology department to implement an integrative care program. We conducted a qualitative study including participant observation and semi-structured interviews with parents, nurses, doctors, and therapists. Data analysis was based on a grounded theory approach and focused on the status quo of care in the ICU. RESULTS The following factors needed to be considered: the structure of the ICU, communication and information dissemination, and time constraints. This led to the following components of the integrative care program: (1) a training plan in anthroposophic treatments for all nurses that was conducted by 2 trained anthroposophic nurses, and (2) the introduction of an integrative shift that was on top of regular care at the ICU and focused on delivery of integrative care to patients. CONCLUSION To add new care components to an ICU, the existing context has to be considered. Time constraints and high workload are factors that need to be recognized. In this particular context, a highly flexible program was the solution.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Massage is a popular form of health care used among women, yet little is known about the characteristics of women who use massage therapy and the rationale for its use. This study reports the prevalence and characteristics of young and middle-aged Australian women who consulted a massage therapist. DESIGN The study analysed data from the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health; a nationally-representative sample of Australian women. The data from 7,993 young, and 9,102 middle-aged women were included in the analyses and massage use was compared against measures of health status, health care utilisation, and demographics. RESULTS Prevalence of consultation with a massage therapist in the previous 12 months was 42.4% in young women and 25.2% in middle-aged women. Women who consulted a massage therapist were more likely to consult other complementary medicine practitioners and/or use self-prescribed complementary medicine. Both young and middle-aged women were more likely to consult a massage therapist if they experienced musculoskeletal problems; however less likely, with chronic disease such as diabetes and hypertension. CONCLUSION Despite large numbers of young and middle-aged Australian women consulting a massage therapist, no Australian studies investigate the prevalence of massage consultations and report correlations with characteristics relevant to demographic, health status and health service data. Our findings highlight the need for further investigation of women's choices relevant to the use of massage therapy. Such research could shape the future of women's health care by providing insight into women's decision making around massage therapy, conventional treatment and healthcare utilisation.

Abstract
Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) has been demonstrated to be an effective therapy in several clinical conditions and age groups. Despite the clinical effectiveness, lack of robust data in terms of neurobiological, specifically autonomic, mechanisms of action is observed. Preliminary studies showed a parasympathetic effect leading to a trophotropic effect of OMT. However, these data are limited to heart rate variability (HRV) analysis. In order to study further the role of OMT on the autonomic nervous system, a cross-over randomized controlled trial RCT has been designed to test the effect of osteopathic treatment compared to sham therapy on a range of autonomic parameters. Thermal images, HRV and skin conductance data were collected on a sample of healthy adults. The study design consisted of two sessions (OMT and SHAM), 1 treatment per week, lasting 35 min each, composed of 5 min of baseline, 25 min of treatment, and 5 min of post-touch. During the baseline and the post-treatment, participants received no touch. Thirty-seven participants (aged 27 ± 5 years old, male ratio 40%) completed the study. Multivariate analysis showed a significant parasympathetic effect of group as well as of epoch on thermographic data of the nose (estimate 0.38; 95% CI 0.12–0.63; p < 0.01), left (0.17; 0.06–0.27; <0.001) and right (0.16; 0.07–0.24; <0.001) perioral as well as on the forehead (0.07; 0.01–0.12; <0.01) regions but not for the chin (0.08; −0.02 to 0.18; 0.13). Consistent with a parasympathetic effect, analyses demonstrated a difference between OMT and sham groups on the nuHF (p < 0.001) and DFA-a1 (p < 0.01) as well as on skin conductance (<0.01). The present research supports the hypothesis that a single session of OMT as compared to sham induces autonomic consequences in healthy non-symptomatic adults. Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose was to involve women's personal experiences of daily life with primary dysmenorrhea (PD) and their body perceptions of the dysmenorrhea-related symptoms in relation to the treatment procedure and to explore the perception of Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback (HRV-BF) or Rhythmical Massage (RM) according to Ita Wegman as a therapeutic intervention within the framework of Anthroposophic Medicine (AM). DESIGN From 60 women who participated in our randomized controlled trial analyzing the effects of HRV-BF or RM, we examined 14 women to get an in-depth understanding of this prevalent disease, using a qualitative design. The women drew their body image before and after the 3-month-intervention on body silhouette diagrams and described their body-perceptions. Semi-structured interviews were conducted and analyzed using content analysis. RESULTS Women perceive dysmenorrhea as a disturbance of their daily lives. The body images showed the variations of experience, from misbalances of body perception to overwhelming attacks of pain hindering a normal life for several days per month. Perception of therapeutic interventions range from relaxing without effects on complaints to important changes and benefits on the physical, emotional, and/or social level. Both therapies can support stronger self-awareness through enabling a more differentiated sense of body-awareness, sometimes resulting in women experiencing fewer limitations in their daily lives. Effects may be influenced by the readiness to resonate with the therapeutic process. Qualitative interviews and body images can serve as tools to integrate individuality and help to integrate embodied more or less conscious aspects of complaints. CONCLUSIONS The body silhouette diagram could be used systematically to include reflections of embodiment in the therapeutic and research settings and help to diagnose in advance the ability of participants to resonate with interventions. RM and HRV-BF influence self-awareness and may enable salutogenic and self-management capacities. For more effective treatment it may be helpful to make treatment suggestions based on an integrative individual history that includes preferences, expectations and a body silhouette diagram.

Abstract
BACKGROUND 20-90% of all women suffer from dysmenorrhea. Standard therapy of primary dysmenorrhea (PD) are NSAIDs and oral contraceptives, effective but not without possible side effects. OBJECTIVE To examine the efficacy of rhythmical massage (Anthroposophic Medicine) and heart rate variability biofeedback compared to usual care (control group) on pain intensity in women with primary dysmenorrhea. METHODS This was a three-arm randomized controlled study. Both interventions (rhythmical massage once a week or HRV biofeedback 15 min daily) were carried out over a period of three months. The third group (control) applied usual care. The primary outcome were between-group differences in mean pain intensity (detected by a Numeric Rating Scale, NRS) during menstruation after three months (post-assessment, t2). Secondary outcomes were the use of analgesics, quality of life (SF-12) and heart rate variability. RESULTS The study involved 60 women, mean age 29.7 years, SD 8.0 (n = 23 rhythmical massage, n = 20 biofeedback, n = 17 control). For the primary outcome there was a significant difference between the groups after three months (p = .005). Bonferroni adjusted post-hoc tests revealed a significant difference between rhythmical massage and control group (mean difference: -1.61; 95 CI: -2.77/-0.44; p = .004; ES: -0.80). No significant differences were found between rhythmical massage and biofeedback (mean difference: -0.71; 95 CI: -1.82/ 0.40; p = .361; ES: -0.34) and between biofeedback and control group (mean difference: -0.90; 95 CI: -2.10/-0.30; p = .211; ES: -0.51). For the secondary outcomes no significant differences were found between the groups at t2. The drop-out rate was higher in the biofeedback group (n = 6) than in the massage (n = 2) or the control group (n = 4). CONCLUSION Preliminary evidence suggests that rhythmical massage might improve pain intensity after 12 weeks compared to usual care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Rhythmical massage therapy (RMT) is a massage technique used in anthroposophic medicine. OBJECTIVE The authors aimed to investigate the physiological action of RMT on the cardiovascular system by analysing heart rate variability (HRV). DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS AND INTERVENTION This study was a randomised, controlled and single-blinded trial, involving 44 healthy women (mean age: (26.20 ± 4.71) years). The subjects were randomised to one of three arms: RMT with aromatic oil (RA), RMT without aromatic oil (RM) or standardised sham massage (SM). In the study the subjects were exposed to a standardised stress situation followed by one of the study techniques and Holter electrocardiograms (ECGs) were recorded for 24 h. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES HRV parameters were calculated from linear (time and frequency domain) and nonlinear dynamics (symbolic dynamics, Poincare plot analysis) of the 24-h Holter ECG records. RESULTS Short- and long-term effects of massage on autonomic regulation differed significantly among the three groups. Immediately after an RMT session, stimulation of HRV was found in the groups RA and RM. The use of an aromatic oil produced greater short-term measurable changes in HRV compared with rhythmic massage alone, but after 24 h the effect was no longer distinguishable from the RM group. The lowest stimulation of HRV parameters was measured in the SM group. CONCLUSION RMT causes specific and marked stimulation of the autonomic nervous system. Use of a medicinal aromatic oil had only a temporary effect on HRV, indicating that the RM causes the most relevant long-term effect. The effect is relatively specific, as the physiological effects seen in the group of subjects who received only SM were considerably less pronounced. Abstract
Mechanical and geometrical cues influence cell behaviour. At the tissue level, almost all organs exhibit immediate mechanical responsiveness, in particular by increasing their stiffness in direct proportion to an applied mechanical stress. It was recently shown in cultured-cell models, in particular with fibroblasts, that the frequency of the applied stress is a fundamental stimulating parameter. However, the influence of the stimulus frequency at the tissue level has remained elusive. Using a device to deliver an oscillating torque that generates cyclic strain at different frequencies, we studied the effect(s) of mild skin massage in an ex vivo model and in vivo. Skin explants were maintained ex vivo for 10 days and massaged twice daily for one minute at various frequencies within the range of 65–85 Hz. Biopsies were analysed at D0, D5 and D10 and processed for immuno-histological staining specific to various dermal proteins. As compared to untreated skin explants, the massaging procedure clearly led to higher rates of expression, in particular for decorin, fibrillin, tropoelastin, and procollagen-1. The mechanical stimulus thus evoked an anti-aging response. Strikingly, the expression was found to depend on the stimulus frequency with maximum expression at 75Hz. We then tested whether this mechanical stimulus had an anti-aging effect in vivo. Twenty Caucasian women (aged 65-75y) applied a commercial anti-aging cream to the face and neck, followed by daily treatments using the anti-aging massage device for 8 weeks. A control group of twenty-two women, with similar ages to the first group, applied the cream alone. At W0, W4 and W8, a blinded evaluator assessed the global facial wrinkles, skin texture, lip area, cheek wrinkles, neck sagging and neck texture using a clinical grading scale. We found that combining the massaging device with a skin anti-aging formulation amplified the beneficial effects of the cream.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to establish if the changes in sympathetic and parasympathetic activity (analyzed through heart-rate variability [HRV]) during ultrasound (US)-guided percutaneous needle electrolysis (PNE) is due to the effect of needle puncture only or of the PNE technique per se where the puncture and galvanic current are combined. METHODS This was an experimental, case-control study that took place at the University of Seville. Subjects were 36 male footballers who were randomly allocated to three groups: a control group (CG; 12 players), for whom HRV was recorded for 10 min, both at rest and during an exhaustive US examination of the patellar tendon and adjacent structures; a first experimental group (PNE group; 12 players), for whom HRV was recorded for 10 min, both at rest and during application of US-guided PNE in the patellar tendon; and a second experimental group (needle group; 12 players), for whom HRV was recorded for 10 min, both at rest and during application of US-guided PNE without electrical current in the patellar tendon. The outcome measures were the diameters of the Poincaré plot (SD1, SD2), stress score, and sympathetic/parasympathetic ratio. RESULTS There were no differences between groups in any baseline measurements, nor were there any significant differences between CG measurements (baseline vs. intervention). The PNE group exhibited statistically significant increases in SD1 (p = 0.01) and SD2 (p = 0.004) and statistically significant decreases in SS and S/PS ratio (p = 0.03), indicating increased parasympathetic and decreased sympathetic activity, respectively. The needle group exhibited statistically significant increases in SD2 (p = 0.02) and statistically significant decreases in SS (p = 0.02), indicating decreased sympathetic activity. CONCLUSIONS The application of the US-guided PNE technique caused a measurable increase in parasympathetic activity (detected by HRV), which was due to the combination of needle puncture and electric current.

Abstract
PURPOSE To show that heart rate variability (HRV) in the standing position better reflects the way in which athletes adapt to training in so-called intermittent sports than the indicator of resting parasympathetic tone usually employed in endurance sports. METHODS Twenty professional soccer players (intermittent sport) took part in a 5-week training session divided into three successive periods: "Warm-up", "Intensive training" and "Tapering". At the beginning and end of each of the three periods, a stand test was carried out and the heart rate was recorded, beat by beat (Polar Team 2). We analysed HRV to determine the indicator mostly used to demonstrate training adaptation in endurance sports (lnRMSSD supine, natural logarithm of root mean square of the successive differences) as well as indicators obtained by means of spectral analysis in both supine and standing position. RESULTS A decrease in heart rate was observed in the supine position at rest during training (-5.2 ± 1.3 bpm) while lnRMSSD and spectral analysis indicators remained unchanged. The "Warm-up" caused an increase in spectral analysis total power in standing position which was further highlighted by "Tapering" (3.39 ± 0.09, 3.61 ± 0.08 and 3.65 ± 0.09 log ms(2), respectively). However, the autonomic changes are probably more complex than a change in autonomic activity or balance since spectral analysis autonomic indicators remained unchanged. CONCLUSIONS HRV in the standing position could monitor training adaptation in intermittent sports contrary to the indicator usually employed in endurance sports. However, the significance of the HRV change in the standing position during training remains unclear.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ultrasound (US)-guided percutaneous needle electrolysis (PNE) is a novel minimally invasive approach, which involves the application of a galvanic current via an acupuncture needle. As in any procedure involving needling, vagal reactions have been reported during PNE. OBJECTIVE To examine for changes in autonomic activity during the US-guided PNE technique on healthy patellar tendons by measurement and analysis of heart rate variability (HRV). METHODS Twenty-two male footballers were randomly allocated to: a control group (11 players), for whom HRV was recorded for 10 min, both at rest and during an exhaustive US examination of the patellar tendon and adjacent structures; and an experimental group (11 players), for whom HRV was recorded for 10 min, both at rest and during application of US-guided PNE on the patellar tendon. The following HRV parameters were assessed: mean NN interval, mean heart rate, time domain parameters (SDNN, rMSSD, pNN50), diameters of the Poincaré plot (SD1, SD2), stress score, and sympathetic/parasympathetic ratio. RESULTS There were no differences between groups in any baseline measurements, nor were there any significant differences between control group measurements (baseline vs intervention). The experimental group exhibited statistically significant increases in SDNN/SD1 (p=0.02/p=0.03) and SD2 (p=0.03), indicating increased parasympathetic and decreased sympathetic activity, respectively. CONCLUSIONS US-guided PNE was associated with an autonomic imbalance characterised by greater parasympathetic activity, which could potentially result in a vasovagal reaction. Care should be taken to monitor for adverse reactions during US-guided PNE and simple HRV indicators may have a role in early detection.

Abstract
Massage therapy (MT) has shown potential in reducing blood pressure (BP); however, the psychophysiological pathways and structures involved in this outcome are unclear. The aims of this scoping review were twofold. (1) To summarize the current knowledge of the mechanisms of action of MT on BP. (2) To highlight the research gaps and challenges that researchers must overcome to further elucidate how MT attenuates BP. A scoping review was conducted to examine the evidence regarding the mechanisms of action of MT on BP. This review included the thematic analysis of 27 publications that considered the influence of MT on BP. Based on this analysis, six potential BP mediating pathways were identified Current theories suggest that MT exerts sympatholytic effects through physiologic and psychological mechanisms, improves hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenocortical axis function, and increases in blood flow, which, in turn, may improve endothelial function. Future study is needed, using more scientifically rigorous methodology, to fully elucidate the mechanism of action of MT.

Abstract
Anthroposophic medicine is a physician-provided complementary therapy system that was founded by Rudolf Steiner and Ita Wegman. Anthroposophic therapy includes special medicinal products, artistic therapies, eurythmy movement exercises, and special physical therapies. The Anthroposophic Medicine Outcomes Study (AMOS) was a prospective observational multicenter study of 1631 outpatients starting anthroposophic therapy for anxiety disorders, asthma, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, depression, low back pain, migraine, and other chronic indications under routine conditions in Germany. AMOS incorporated two features proposed for the evaluation of integrative therapy systems: (1) a sequential approach, starting with the whole therapy system (use, safety, outcomes, perceived benefit), addressing comparative effectiveness and proceeding to the major system components (physician counseling, anthroposophic medicinal products, art therapy, eurythmy therapy, rhythmical massage therapy) and (2) a mix of different research methods to build an information synthesis, including pre-post analyses, prospective comparative analyses, economic analyses, and safety analyses of individual patient data. AMOS fostered two methodological innovations for the analysis of single-arm therapy studies (combined bias suppression, systematic outcome comparison with corresponding cohorts in other studies) and the first depression cost analysis worldwide comparing primary care patients treated for depression vs depressed patients treated for another disorder vs nondepressed patients. A total of 21 peer-reviewed publications from AMOS have resulted. This article provides an overview of the main research questions, methods, and findings from these publications: anthroposophic treatment was safe and was associated with clinically relevant improvements in symptoms and quality of life without cost increase; improvements were found in all age, diagnosis, and therapy modality groups and were retained at 48-month follow-up; nonrespondent bias, natural recovery, regression to the mean, and adjunctive therapies together could explain a maximum of 37% of the improvement.
