Abstract
OBJECTIVE Alcohol and cannabis are two of the most widely used substances in the United States, where sleep problems are also prominent. Although poor sleep is linked to substance use, little is known about how prior-night sleep contributes to next-day decisions to use substances in daily life. This study tested the impact of prior-night sleep duration and quality on momentary motives for alcohol (Aim 1) and cannabis use (Aim 2). METHODS Adults reporting simultaneous use of alcohol and cannabis at least twice per week (N = 88; 60 % female, 85 % White, Mage = 25.22) completed 14 days of ecological momentary assessment with 5 + surveys per day. Morning surveys assessed prior-night sleep duration and quality, and all surveys assessed alcohol and cannabis use and motives for use. Multilevel models tested each aim. RESULTS For Aim 1, at the within-person level, longer prior-night sleep duration was associated with greater endorsement of depression-coping motives for alcohol, but only among those reporting relatively high levels of depression at baseline. Better prior-night sleep quality was associated with greater enhancement drinking motives the next day. For Aim 2, at the within-person level, longer prior night sleep duration was associated with lower enhancement motives for cannabis use. CONCLUSION Enhancement motives for alcohol and cannabis use change as a function of day-to-day changes in sleep duration and quality. Findings highlight the idea that treatment for sleep disturbance could influence substance use motives, perhaps thereby reducing subsequent use and related consequences.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Young adult cannabis use is common; while cannabis is often marketed as a product that can improve sleep, evidence supporting these claims is limited, and effects may differ for individuals with underlying mental health issues. This study measured the association between cannabis use and sleep problems among young adults and determined whether associations differ by mental health status. DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS Using two waves of a young adult cohort study (baseline: March-September 2020; follow-up: January-June 2021), we measured the association of cannabis use frequency with subsequent sleep problems overall and stratified by baseline sleep quality and mental health status in separate moderation analyses. This study was conducted in Southern California, USA, and included 1926 participants aged 20-23 years (mean age = 21; 61% female, 46% Hispanic). MEASUREMENTS Exposure was baseline cannabis use frequency (never use, prior use, 1-5 days/month, 6-19 days/month, ≥ 20 days/month). The outcome was sleep problems at follow-up (range = 4-24, higher score indicating worse sleep). Models were adjusted for socio-demographic factors, baseline sleep problems, mental health symptoms (depression and/or anxiety versus neither) and past 30-day nicotine or alcohol use. In moderation analyses, models were additionally stratified by mental health symptoms and baseline sleep quality (excellent versus imperfect sleep). FINDINGS Among the young adult sample, 11% used cannabis ≥ 20 days/month at baseline. For participants without baseline anxiety or depression symptoms, using cannabis ≥ 20 days/month (versus never use) was associated with greater sleep problems at follow-up [mean difference (MD) = 1.66, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.59-2.74]. Among participants with anxiety and/or depression and pre-existing sleep problems at baseline, using cannabis ≥ 20 days/month (versus never use) was associated with fewer sleep problems at follow-up (MD = -1.42, 95% CI = -2.81 to -0.02). CONCLUSIONS The effects of cannabis use on sleep appear to differ by underlying mental health symptoms. Frequent cannabis use may improve sleep for young adults with depression and/or anxiety who have pre-existing sleep problems, but worsen sleep for young adults without depression and/or anxiety.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The Emotional Cascade Model posits that rumination is associated with impulsivity and risky behaviours such as substance use. Although trauma-exposed individuals often engage in rumination and problematic cannabis use, this model has not been tested on trauma-exposed cannabis users. Therefore, our study examines the direct and indirect effects between rumination and its subtypes with problematic cannabis use among trauma-exposed cannabis users. We also examine how these associations occur through impulsivity. METHODS A cross-sectional sample of 56 trauma-exposed young adult cannabis users (Mage = 21 years, 59% female, 73% white) self-reported rumination, impulsivity, and cannabis-related problems. All participants provided written informed consent, and procedures were approved by the university's Institutional Review Board and pre-registered. RESULTS Regression analyses indicated total and brooding rumination were related to greater cannabis-related problems, after covarying for number of traumas and cannabis use frequency. Rumination, specifically brooding, was incrementally associated with greater cannabis-related problems and had an indirect effect on cannabis-related problems through impulsivity. Consistent with hypothesis, rumination and impulsivity were incrementally associated with greater problematic cannabis use among trauma-exposed cannabis users. CONCLUSION The current study expands work on the Emotional Cascade Model by supporting the indirect effect of impulsivity in the association between rumination and problematic cannabis use.

Abstract
PURPOSE Poor sleep is one of the most common side effects of cancer. It can persist for years beyond treatment and negatively impact quality of life and health. Cannabis is increasingly used to manage cancer treatment-related symptoms, including sleep. This study investigated the use and perceived effects of cannabis as a sleep aid in Canadian cancer survivors. METHODS Adult Canadian cancer survivors (N = 1464) were recruited via the Angus Reid Institute and completed an online, cross-sectional survey including the Insomnia Severity Index and questions about cannabis use for sleep. Standard descriptive statistics, such as means, standard deviations, and ranges were produced for measured variables to assess the ways cancer survivors use cannabis for sleep. Frequencies were tabulated for categorical and ordinal variables. RESULTS On average, participants (Mage = 61.1 years; Women = 50%: Men = 48%) received their cancer diagnosis 12.5 years prior. Of participants, 23.5% (n = 344) currently use cannabis as a sleep aid, with reported benefits including relaxation, reduced time to fall asleep, fewer nocturnal awakenings and improved sleep quality. Two thirds (68.3%, n = 235) only began using cannabis for sleep after their cancer diagnosis. Over a third of participants (36.3%, n = 125) use cannabis as a sleep aid every day. Among the 344, the most common other reasons for using cannabis were pain (31.4%, n = 108), recreational use (24.4%, n = 84), and anxiety (12.5%, n = 43). CONCLUSIONS Given the prevalence and potential impact, research is needed to examine the actual efficacy of cannabis as a sleep aid. IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS It is important that cancer survivors have information on methods to help their sleep to avoid impairments to quality of life and health.

Abstract
Expectancies regarding the sleep-promoting effects of cannabis may exacerbate the propensity to self-medicate sleep problems with cannabis. Given the potential clinical importance of expectancies for the sedative effects of cannabis, Goodhines et al (2020) developed the Sleep-Related Cannabis Expectancies Questionnaire (SR-CEQ). However, concurrent validity of this instrument has not been evaluated. This study aimed to replicate the two-factor structure and internal reliability and explore incremental construct validity of the SR-CEQ. Cross-sectional online survey data were collected from 287 college students (Mage = 19.07 ± 1.44 years, range 18-25; 47% male; 84% non-Hispanic White; 61% lifetime cannabis use). Confirmatory factor analysis replicated an adequate fit of the two-factor model (SRMR = 0.08) with excellent internal consistency within positive (α = .94) and negative (α = .91) subscales. Novel correlates were observed for positive (greater mood, sleep, cannabis risk; rs = .16-.48, ps = .001-.03) and negative (lesser cannabis risk; rs = -.18-.61, ps = .001-.03) subscales. Positive expectancies were greater among students with insomnia (t[285] = 2.70, p < .01; d = .33) and hazardous cannabis use (t[284] = 6.63, p < .001; d = 0.91). No group differences were observed by sex or for negative sleep-related cannabis expectances. This study extends psychometric validation of the SR-CEQ and highlights positive expectancies as a potential risk factor for insomnia and hazardous cannabis use.

Abstract
Introduction Rates of prenatal cannabis use (PCU) have increased in recent years. Despite evidence of developmental health consequences to offspring and birthing person, there has been a reduction in the perception of PCU-related harms. Due to the stigma and risk of legal consequences associated with disclosing PCU, individuals are often cautious to seek information from their healthcare providers. Thus, pregnant people are more likely to seek information from anonymous sources, such as online support forums. Information garnered from these anonymous online forums can shed light on the patterns and motives for cannabis use among this population. These insights can help to better inform prevention efforts aimed at reducing potential harms of PCU and improve intervention efforts. Methods Posts (N = 120) from an online pro-cannabis pregnancy forum called "Ganja Mamas" on WhattoExpect.com were randomly selected and analyzed if they covered topics related to PCU. A qualitative coding structure based on the existing PCU literature was created and refined to include other emergent topics. The coding structure was used to apply thematic analysis to posts; associated codes were grouped into themes. Codes specific to symptom management for physical and mental health were subsequently subjected to further conceptual analysis for the current study. Results Four themes related to symptom management during pregnancy were identified: 1) cannabis use and impacts of use for a variety of mental health symptoms, including depression and anxiety; 2) cannabis use for physical health symptoms and conditions, such as nausea and pain; 3) use of cannabis to achieve homeostasis and manage stress; 4) decision-making about using cannabis for symptom management, such as using cannabis instead of prescription medications. Most discussions in this pro-cannabis forum reflected perceptions that cannabis was effective in treating the conditions for which it was used; however, limitations of cannabis' efficacy were also mentioned. Discussion There is need for reduced stigma and open communication between pregnant persons who use cannabis and their providers in discussing how to manage their mental and physical health symptoms. Understanding the various symptoms for which individuals use cannabis during pregnancy to self-treat can inform these conversations and the expansion of harm reduction strategies.

Abstract
Introduction Cannabinoids, both natural and synthetic, are a subject of scientific interest. Cannabis is widely used, and its impact on health and the immune system is being studied. The endocannabinoid system influences inflammation, including the Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR), a potential diagnostic tool. Our study investigates the connection between cannabis use and NLR. Methods Our systematic review was registered in Prospero (#CRD42023463539). We searched six databases (PubMed, Scopus, Embase, PsycINFO, Web of Science, and CINAHL Complete) for records in English from inception to May 2024. We included observational studies that measured the Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR) in cannabis users and control participants. We used the Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale to assess the quality of the included studies. We selected a random-effects model, and the statistical analysis was performed using Stata software version 17. Results Out of a total of 4,054 records, only five articles were selected for inclusion in the meta-analysis. All of these chosen studies utilized a retrospective design. Furthermore, it's worth noting that all of the studies included were of high quality. In five studies involving 3,359 cannabis users and 10,437 non-users, no significant difference in NLR was found (WMD: 0.12 [-0.16, 0.41], I2: 39.89%). Subgroup analysis on healthy and schizophrenia participants didn't show significant NLR differences (p=0.76). Secondary analysis revealed cannabis users had higher Platelet-to-Lymphocyte Ratio (PLR) (67.80 [44.54, 91.06]), neutrophil count (0.68 [0.25, 1.12]), white blood cell count (0.92 [0.43, 1.41]), monocyte count (0.11 [0.05, 0.16]), and Systemic Immune Inflammation Index (SII) (83.48 [5.92, 157.04]) compared to non-users. Conclusion Our systematic review and meta-analysis reveal that cannabis use may affect NLR and hematologic parameters, suggesting a potential immune impact. Complex associations exist, requiring further research. Schizophrenia and pro-inflammatory factors are discussed, highlighting the need for ongoing investigation into cannabis-related immune changes and mental health. Abstract
Cannabis sativa L. (hemp) is a herbaceous plant rich in cannabinoids with a long history of use in pain treatment. The most well-characterized cannabinoids, cannabidiol (CBD) and Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC), garnered much attention in chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) treatment. However, few studies have investigated the biological benefits and mechanism of hemp extract on CIPN. In the present study, hemp extract (JG) rich in cannabinoids was extracted by supercritical fluid carbon dioxide extraction (SFCE). The antinociceptive efficacy was evaluated using a paclitaxel-induced peripheral neuropathy (PIPN) rat model based on behavioral tests. Further omics-based approaches were applied to explore the potential mechanisms. The results showed that JG decreased mechanical allodynia, thermal hyperalgesia, and inflammatory cytokines in PIPN rats significantly. Transcriptome analysis identified seven key genes significantly regulated by JG in PIPN model rats, mainly related to the neuroactive ligand-receptor interaction pathway, PPAR signaling pathway, and cAMP signaling pathway. In metabolomic analysis, a total of 39 significantly altered metabolites were identified, mainly correlated with pentose and glucuronate interconversions and the glycerophospholipid metabolism pathway. Gut microbiota analysis suggested that increased community Lachnoclostridium and Lachnospiraceae_UCG-006 in PIPN rats can be reversed significantly by JG. In conclusion, hemp extract exhibited antinociceptive effects on PIPN. The analgesic mechanism was probably related to the regulation of inflammation, neuroactive ligand-receptor interaction pathway, sphingolipid metabolism, etc. This study provides novel insights into the functional interactions of Cannabis sativa L. extract on PIPN.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Both sleep and cognition are partially modulated by the endocannabinoid (ECB) system. Cannabis has been reported to have effects on sleep and cognition. This review aims to summarize the recent literature on the ECB system, the role of cannabis and the ECB system on sleep regulation and cognition. Further, this review will identify existing gaps in knowledge and suggest potential targets for future research. METHODS We performed this review in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Reports were identified by searching PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, Web of Science, and PsycINFO for articles published through September 2021 for studies with data available on aspects of cognition, cannabis, or the ECB system, and sleep or circadian rhythms (CRs). RESULTS We identified 6 human and 6 animal studies to be eligible for inclusion in this review. Several human studies found that cannabis use is not associated with changes in sleep quality or cognitive function. However, individual cannabinoids appeared to have independent effects on cognition and sleep; THC alone decreased cognitive performance and increased daytime sleepiness, whereas CBD alone had no effect on sleep or cognition. Animal studies demonstrated that manipulation of the ECB system altered activity and cognitive function, some of which appeared to be dependent on the light/dark cycle. CONCLUSION The sleep-wake cycle and CRs are both likely modulated by the ECB system, potentially resulting in effects on cognition, however this area is critically understudied.

Abstract
The current review highlights the available research related to cannabis and indicators of physical health in a variety of domains. Various studies have found associations between cannabis use with pulmonary, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and endocrine function as well as body mass index and sleep. At this time, more research is needed to understand the influence of cannabis use on physical health, particularly among adolescent samples.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Research investigating cannabis use and sleep health is limited, and results are mixed. Few studies were nationally representative with racially-ethnically diverse samples or assessed potential modifiers. Our objective was to investigate cross-sectional associations between reported cannabis use and sleep disturbances by potential modifiers among non-Hispanic White, non-Hispanic Black, and Hispanic/Latino men and women in the United States. METHODS We used nationally representative National Comorbidity Survey-Replication data collected from 2001 to 2003 among 3929 adults. Poisson regression with robust variance estimated prevalence ratios (PR) and 95% confidence intervals of patterns of sleep disturbances identified through latent class analysis. Models adjusted for sociodemographic, health behavior, and clinical characteristics were stratified by race-ethnicity and by race-ethnicity along with sex/gender, and age, separately. RESULTS Over half of adults reported cannabis use (52%-ever/lifetime vs 48%-never). We identified two latent classes: multiple sleep disturbances with daytime sleepiness and no sleep disturbances with some daytime sleepiness. Prevalence of multiple sleep disturbances with daytime sleepiness was higher among participants reporting lifetime cannabis use (23% vs 20%). Associations did not vary by race-ethnicity or sex/gender. Lifetime vs never cannabis use was marginally associated with a higher prevalence of multiple sleep disturbances with daytime sleepiness only among adults aged 25-29years (PR=1.09 [95% confidence interval: 1.00-1.18]; eg, PRage 40+ years=1.00 [0.97-1.03], pinteraction=0.03). CONCLUSIONS Associations between cannabis use and sleep may vary by age. Replication with more recent data and prospective studies that investigate intersectional identities among diverse populations with objective assessments are warranted.

Abstract
Traditional risk factors for obesity and the metabolic syndrome, such as excess energy intake and lack of physical activity, cannot fully explain the high prevalence of these conditions. Insufficient sleep and circadian misalignment predispose individuals to poor metabolic health and promote weight gain and have received increased research attention in the past 10 years. Insufficient sleep is defined as sleeping less than recommended for health benefits, whereas circadian misalignment is defined as wakefulness and food intake occurring when the internal circadian system is promoting sleep. This Review discusses the impact of insufficient sleep and circadian misalignment in humans on appetite hormones (focusing on ghrelin, leptin and peptide-YY), energy expenditure, food intake and choice, and risk of obesity. Some potential strategies to reduce the adverse effects of sleep disruption on metabolic health are provided and future research priorities are highlighted. Millions of individuals worldwide do not obtain sufficient sleep for healthy metabolic functions. Furthermore, modern working patterns, lifestyles and technologies are often not conducive to adequate sleep at times when the internal physiological clock is promoting it (for example, late-night screen time, shift work and nocturnal social activities). Efforts are needed to highlight the importance of optimal sleep and circadian health in the maintenance of metabolic health and body weight regulation.

Abstract
Background The general use of cannabis in adolescence is associated with various sleep deficits. While traditional smoking remains the most common form of cannabis consumption amongst adolescents, novel methods of administration are becoming more popular and available due to legalization. The association of these novel methods of use with sleep in adolescence has yet to be studied and research is needed to inform public health initiatives. Methods High school (9th-12th grade) students from the Healthy Kids Colorado Survey with current cannabis use (n= 4,637) reported on numerous demographic variables, method of cannabis use (flower, edibles, dabs, and vaporizers) and average sleep duration on weeknights. Logistic regression assessed the relationship between novel methods of use (edibles, dabs, and vaporizers) and sleep duration in comparison to cannabis flower. Results Use of any edible, dab, or vaporizer product in the past 30-days was associated with being male and current tobacco use. Reporting a novel method of use as the most common mode of cannabis use was associated with current tobacco use and higher mothers' education. Students who used any novel method products in the past 30 days or reported these products as the usual mode of cannabis use, were more likely to sleep 7 hours or fewer a night. Conclusions Novel methods of cannabis administration such as edibles, dabs, and vaporizers are associated with getting less sleep than recommended (7 or less hours), in comparison to those who smoked flower. Sleep outcomes should be a focus of study for novel cannabis products amongst high school adolescents.

Abstract
The use of cannabis products to help with sleep and various other medical conditions by the public has increased significantly in recent years. Withdrawal from cannabinoids can lead to sleep disturbance. Here, we describe a patient who developed significant insomnia leading to worsening anxiety, mood, and suicidal ideation in the setting of medical cannabis withdrawal, prompting presentation to the Emergency Department and inpatient admission. There is a limited evidence base for the use of cannabis products for sleep. We provide a comprehensive review evaluating the literature on the use of cannabis products on sleep, including an overview of cannabis and related psychoactive compounds, the current state of the law as it pertains to the prescribing and use of these substances, and potential side effects and drug interactions. We specifically discuss the impact of cannabis products on normal sleep and circadian sleep-wake rhythms, insomnia, excessive daytime sleepiness, sleep apnea, parasomnias, and restless legs syndrome. We also describe the effects of cannabis withdrawal on sleep and how this increases relapse to cannabis use. Most of the studies are observational but the few published randomized controlled trials are reviewed. Our comprehensive review of the effects of cannabis products on normal sleep and sleep disorders, relevant to primary care providers and other clinicians evaluating and treating patients who use these types of products, shows that cannabis products have minimal to no effects on sleep disorders and may have deleterious effects in some individuals. Further research examining the differential impact of the various types of cannabinoids that are currently available on each of these sleep disorders is required.

Abstract
BACKGROUND While popularly consumed for its perceived benefits as a sleeping aid, the impact of cannabis on sleep-wake regulation in clinical studies is inconclusive. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between cannabis use and nightly sleep duration in a nationally representative dataset. METHODS A cross-sectional analysis of adults was undertaken using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data from 2005 to 2018. Respondents were dichotomized as recent users or non-users if they had used or not used cannabis in the past 30 days, respectively. The primary outcome was nightly sleep duration, categorized as short (<6 hours), optimal (6-9 hours), and long (>9 hours). Multinomial logistic regression was used to adjust for sociodemographic and health-related covariates, and survey sample weights were used in modeling. RESULTS From a sample representing approximately 146 million adults in the USA, 14.5% reported recent cannabis use. In an adjusted analysis, recent users were more likely than non-users to report both short sleep (OR 1.34, 95% CI 1.12 to 1.59, p<0.001) and long sleep (OR 1.56, 95% CI 1.25 to 1.96, p<0.001). Heavy users (≥20 of the past 30 days) were even more likely to be at the extremes of nightly sleep duration. DISCUSSION Recent cannabis use was associated with the extremes of nightly sleep duration in a nationally representative sample of adults, with suggestions of a dose-response relationship. Our findings highlight the need to further characterize the sleep health of regular cannabis users in the population.
