Background: Nutritional concerns such as food composition, energy intake, and nutrient absorption are essential for performance at high altitude and may differ between men and women. We performed a scoping review to summarize what is currently known on nutrition for women during short-term, high-altitude, physically active sojourns. Methods: The UIAA Medical Commission convened an international team to review women's health issues at high altitude and to publish updated recommendations. Pertinent literature from PubMed and Cochrane was identified by keyword search combinations (including nutrition, metabolism, energy composition, micronutrients) with additional publications found by hand search. Results: We found 7,165 articles, of which 13 original articles assessed nutritional aspects in physically active women on short-term high-altitude sojourns, with other articles found by hand search. We summarize the main findings. Conclusions: Data on women's nutrition at altitude are very limited. Reduction in energy intake plus increased energy expenditure at high altitude can lead to unbalanced nutrition, negatively influencing high-altitude adaptation and physical performance. Therefore, adequate dietary and fluid intake is essential to maintaining energy balance and hydration at high altitude in women as in men. Iron supplementation should be considered for women with iron depletion before travel.

Abstract
Hypobaric hypoxia under chromic conditions triggers hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction (HPV) and right ventricular hypertrophy (RVH). The role of zinc (Zn) under hypoxia is controversial and remains unclear. We evaluated the effect of Zn supplementation in prolonged hypobaric hypoxia on HIF2α/MTF-1/MT/ZIP12/PKCε pathway in the lung and RVH. Wistar rats were exposed to hypobaric hypoxia for 30 days and randomly allocated into three groups: chronic hypoxia (CH); intermittent hypoxia (2 days hypoxia/2 days normoxia; CIH); and normoxia (sea level control; NX). Each group was subdivided (n = 8) to receive either 1% Zn sulfate solution (z) or saline (s) intraperitoneally. Body weight, hemoglobin, and RVH were measured. Zn levels were evaluated in plasma and lung tissue. Additionally, the lipid peroxidation levels, HIF2α/MTF-1/MT/ZIP12/PKCε protein expression and pulmonary artery remodeling were measured in the lung. The CIH and CH groups showed decreased plasma Zn and body weight and increased hemoglobin, RVH, and vascular remodeling; the CH group also showed increased lipid peroxidation. Zn administration under hypobaric hypoxia upregulated the HIF2α/MTF-1/MT/ZIP12/PKCε pathway and increased RVH in the intermittent zinc group. Under intermittent hypobaric hypoxia, Zn dysregulation could participate in RVH development through alterations in the pulmonary HIF2α/MTF1/MT/ZIP12/PKCε pathway.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to assess the zinc content and identify the relationship between the concentration of this element and changes in the biochemical status of patients and markers of inflammation during burn shock. We examined 23 patients aged 45.3±16.1 years with burns of I-II-III degree, area of 31-80%. The serum concentrations of zinc, albumin, interleukin-6, C-reactive protein (CRP), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) were determined. The majority of patients (21/23) had severe hypocincemia, correlated with burn area (r=-0.53; p=0.008). A decrease in zinc levels during burn shock was associated with the development of hypoalbuminemia (r=0.52, p=0.01). The association of deviations in ALT and AST activity with changes in zinc concentration was revealed (-0.59<γ<-0.61, 0.008<p<0.009), which may indicate the role of hepatic dysfunction in the development of hypocinkemia. The development of a systemic inflammatory response was revealed. The correlation analysis revealed an association between the zinc and interleukin-6 levels (r=-0.63, p=0.03), as well as zinc and CRP (r=-0.41, p=0.04). From the first days after the injury, zinc deficiency is observed in severely burned patients, which is affected by an inflammatory reaction and hypoalbuminemia. Due to the fact that zinc is one of the key factors in maintaining homeostasis in the body, it is necessary to further study the molecular mechanisms of regulating the level of this trace element in burned patients and to develop ways to correct hypocinkemia that contribute to the effective treatment of burn disease.

Purpose: To evaluate within-subject variability in the serum erythropoietin (EPO) response to multiple simulated altitude exposures. Methods: Seven physically active men and women (age 27 ± 3 years, body mass index = 24.6 ± 4.0 kg/m2) were exposed to normobaric hypoxia (fraction of inspired oxygen [FiO2] = 0.14) for 12 hours on three separate occasions. Serum EPO concentrations were measured before exposure (0 hour), after 6 hours, and after 12 hours in hypoxia. The EPO response to hypoxia was calculated as percent change from 0 to 12 hours (ΔEPO0-12). Results: Exposure time had a significant effect on EPO (p < 0.001) with concentrations increasing 3.2 ± 1.3 mIU/ml from 0 to 6 hours (p = 0.034) and 4.7 ± 1.2 mIU/ml from 0 to 12 hours (p = 0.001). Group mean ΔEPO0-12 remained unchanged (p = 0.688) between the three exposures; however, there was considerable intraindividual variability in EPO responses. The intrasubject coefficient of variation for ΔEPO0-12 was 61% ± 28% (range: 17%-103%) with intrasubject associations ranging r = 0.052 to r = 0.651 between repeated exposures. Conclusions: Athletes who routinely supplement training with simulated altitude methods (e.g., hypoxic tents) should expect inconsistent EPO responses to intermittent exposures lasting ≤12 hours.
