Abstract
Objectives To summarize development processes and research hotspots of infrared imaging technology research on acupuncture and to provide new insights for researchers in future studies. Methods Publications regarding infrared imaging technology in acupuncture from 2008 to 2023 were downloaded from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). VOSviewer 1.6.19, CiteSpace 6.2.R4, Scimago Graphica, and Microsoft Excel software were used for bibliometric analyses. The main analyses include collaboration analyses between countries, institutions, authors, and journals, as well as analyses on keywords and references. Results A total of 346 publications were retrieved from 2008 to 2023. The quantity of yearly publications increased steadily, with some fluctuations over the past 15 years. "Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine" and "American Journal of Chinese Medicine" were the top-cited journals in frequency and centrality. China has the largest number of publications, with the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine being the most prolific institution. Among authors, Litscher Gerhard from Austria (currently Swiss University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Switzerland) in Europe, was the most published and most cited author. The article published by Rojas RF was the most discussed among the cited references. Common keywords included "Acupuncture," "Near infrared spectroscopy," and "Temperature," among others. Explore the relationship between acupoints and temperature through infrared thermography technology (IRT), evaluate pain objectively by functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), and explore acupuncture for functional connectivity between brain regions were the hotspots and frontier trends in this field. Conclusion This study is the first to use bibliometric methods to explore the hotspots and cutting-edge issues in the application of infrared imaging technology in the field of acupuncture. It offers a fresh perspective on infrared imaging technology research on acupuncture and gives scholars useful data to determine the field's hotspots, present state of affairs, and frontier trends.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In this study, we investigated the impact of 10.6-μm CO2 laser moxibustion (LM) on the fastest 15-m walking time in individuals suffering from knee osteoarthritis (KOA). METHODS A total of 392 individuals diagnosed with KOA and meeting the specified eligibility criteria were assigned randomly into two groups: the LM treatment group and the sham LM control group (ratio 1:1). Both groups received either LM therapy or simulated LM therapy to address the affected area of the knee joint. This treatment was administered three times a week for a duration of 4 weeks. RESULTS In the LM group, the fastest 15-m walking times at both Week 4 and Week 12 were significantly reduced compared to the times before treatment (all P < 0.05). However, in the sham LM group, there were no notable differences in the fastest 15-m walking times after treatment (all P > 0.05). Moreover, the LM group exhibited shorter 15-m walking times than the sham LM group at both Week 4 and Week 12 (all P < 0.05). CONCLUSION The use of CO2 LM can lead to a substantial enhancement in the fastest 15-m walking time of individuals suffering from KOA, and its therapeutic impact can last for a minimum of 8 weeks post-treatment. The fastest 15-m walking time serves as an indicator of alterations in the walking capacity of patients with KOA.

Abstract
Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is the main cause of disability in diabetes patients but the efficacy of available drugs is poor. Moxibustion is an adjunctive treatment for DPN that can reduce symptoms. The peak value of the far infrared wavelength of 10.6 μm laser moxibustion is close to the infrared radiation spectrum of traditional moxibustion. Its effect is similar to that of moxibustion and does not cause pain, infection or produce irritating smoke. Twenty-four male SD rats were divided into control (Con), DPN, laser moxibustion (LM), and pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (PDTC) groups (n=6/group). The DPN, LM and PDTC group rats were intraperitoneally injected with 1% streptozotocin (STZ) to induce a model of DPN. LM group rats were irradiated with a laser at bilateral ST36 acupoints for 15 min, once every other day, for 14 days. PDTC group rats were intraperitoneally injected with PDTC once a day. Body weight, blood glucose, and paw withdrawal mechanical threshold (PWMT) were measured and laser speckle imaging (LSI) performed before and after modeling and at 1 and 2 weeks after intervention. Two weeks after intervention, changes in serum interleukin 1β (IL1β), interleukin 6 (IL6), tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα) and nerve growth factor (NGF) were analyzed, and the abundance of NF-κB and IκB-α proteins and levels of NF-κB and IκB-α mRNAs in the sciatic nerve were observed. The results showed that 10.6 μm laser moxibustion can relieve pain, improve microcirculation, and alleviate inflammation in DPN rats, possibly via the NF-κB inflammatory pathway.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of oriental medicine (OM) treatments as monotherapy and add-on therapy compared to conventional treatments for knee osteoarthritis and assess the quality of evidence for these results. OM treatment included acupuncture, herbal medicine, pharmacoacupuncture, and moxibustion. METHODS PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, Google Scholar, 4 Korean medical databases (KoreaMed, Korean Studies Information Service System, Research Information Service System, and Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System), and one Chinese database (China National Knowledge Infrastructure) were searched for articles published between January 1, 2000, and January 1, 2021. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) investigating the effect of OM interventions, single or combined with conventional treatments, on knee osteoarthritis were searched. The risk of bias and quality of evidence of the included studies were evaluated using the Cochrane Collaboration's risk of bias tool and Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation methods, respectively. RESULTS A total of 3911 relevant studies were retrieved and only 23 studies were included for systematic review. Most of the studies showed a significant effect on knee osteoarthritis. 21 studies comparing single OM treatment with conventional treatment were included in the meta-analysis. The effect size of standardized mean difference (SMD) was analyzed as a "small effect" with 0.48 (95% CI -0.80 to -0.16, Z = 2.98, P = .003). In addition, a meta-analysis of 4 studies comparing integrative treatment with conventional treatment showed a "very large effect" with 1.52 (95% CI -2.09 to -0.95, Z = 5.19, P < .001). CONCLUSION Our results suggest that single OM treatment and integrative treatment significantly reduce pain in patients with knee osteoarthritis. However, there is a limited number of RCTs considering integrative treatment which implies more related RCTs should be conducted in the future.

Abstract
AIMS Osteoarthritis (OA) is a multifactorial degenerative disease marked by the progressive deterioration of articular cartilage with inflammation of the synovium. OA's main symptoms include pain and function loss. Monosodium Iodoacetate (MIA) experimental model is widely-used for OS induction since it produces symptoms comparable to those occurring in humans. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty-two rats were divided into four groups (n = 8). The 1st group received saline and included the normal-control rats. Groups 2-4 received intra-articular injections of MIA (3 mg/50 μL) in the rats' knee joints to induce OA. Group 2 included the MIA-control rats. Groups 3 and 4 received intra-articular MIA followed by a 14-day oral eplerenone (50 and 100 mg/kg); respectively. KEY FINDINGS Intra-articular injection of MIA in rats' knee joints caused significant inflammation and pain, elevation of Akt and ERK gene expression in knee joints along with significant alterations in the histological pictures of knee joints and OARSI scores. RANKL/OPG Axis was significantly disrupted. SIGNIFICANCE Eplerenone treatment produced a significant improvement in motor coordination and spontaneous locomotor activity in rats and modulated the key inflammatory mediators in OA (TNF-α, NF-κβ, and IL-6). Eplerenone also suppressed the qRT-PCR gene expression of Akt and ERK in knee joint tissues and improved the histological pictures and OARSI scores of knee joints of treated rats. Eplerenone caused a decline in RANKL concentration accompanied by a rise in OPG concentration thus modulating the RANKL/OPG Axis. Consequently, eplerenone is a candidate for OA therapy due to its potential anti-inflammatory effects.

Abstract
Nowadays, osteoarthritis (OA), a common, multifactorial musculoskeletal disease, is considered to have a low-grade inflammatory pathogenetic component. Lately, neuropsychiatric sequelae of the disease have gained recognition. However, a link between the peripheral inflammatory process of OA and the development of neuropsychiatric pathology is not completely understood. In this review, we provide a narrative that explores the development of neuropsychiatric disease in the presence of chronic peripheral low-grade inflammation with a focus on its signaling to the brain. We describe the development of a pro-inflammatory environment in the OA-affected joint. We discuss inflammation-signaling pathways that link the affected joint to the central nervous system, mainly using primary sensory afferents and blood circulation via circumventricular organs and cerebral endothelium. The review describes molecular and cellular changes in the brain, recognized in the presence of chronic peripheral inflammation. In addition, changes in the volume of gray matter and alterations of connectivity important for the assessment of the efficacy of treatment in OA are discussed in the given review. Finally, the narrative considers the importance of the use of neuropsychiatric diagnostic tools for a disease with an inflammatory component in the clinical setting.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the effects of light therapy (LT) on cartilage repair for knee osteoarthritis (OA) treatment. DESIGN The PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were searched up to August 31, 2020 to identify in vitro and in vivo studies that analyzed the effects of LT on knee cartilage for OA treatment. The study and sample characteristics, LT intervention parameters and posttreatment outcomes were analyzed. Risk of bias was assessed using the Risk of Bias Assessment for Non-randomized Studies (RoBANS) tool. RESULTS Three in vitro and 30 in vivo studies were included. Most studies were judged as high risk of performance and detection bias. Biochemical outcomes were analyzed for both in vitro and in vivo studies, and histological and behavioral outcomes were analyzed for in vivo studies. LT reduced extracellular matrix (ECM) degradation, inflammation, and OA progression, promoting ECM synthesis. LT improved pain-like behavior in animal models, having no apparent effect on gait performance. There were conflicting findings of some of the biochemical, histological, and behavioral outcomes. CONCLUSION The included studies presented different strategies and LT parameters. LT resulted in positive effects on cartilage repair and may be an adequate therapy for OA treatment.

Abstract
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental disorder that is linked with the onset of multiple anxiety-like behaviors. This study was designed to assess how these behaviors and anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) c-Fos expression were impacted by 10.6-μm laser stimulation at acupoint ST36 a rat model of PTSD. A rat model of PTSD was prepared via prolonged exposure of animals to a stressor, followed by a 7-day period during which animals were allowed to rest undisturbed in their cages. Rats were randomized into four experimental groups (n = 12/group): the control, PTSD, LS, and sham LS groups. Control group animals were not subjected to SPS procedures prior to behavioral testing. LS and sham LS animals were administered LS treatment at bilateral ST36 acupoints or non-acupoints, respectively, for a 7-day period. Animals were then assessed for performance in elevated plus maze (EPM) tests and open-field tests (OFT), and their plasma corticosterone levels were measured. In addition, c-Fos-positive nuclei in the ACC were detected via immunohistochemical staining. Relative to sham LS treatment and PTSD model control rats, LS was associated with increased time spent in both open EPM test arms and in the central area in the OFT (P < 0.05). The PTSD model group exhibited a significant reduction in ACC c-Fox expression, while LS treatment significantly increased this expression (P < 0.001). In addition, a correlation was detected between anxiety-like behaviors and altered ACC neuronal activation. The results of this study indicate that LS at acupoint ST36 can have a previously unreported effect on anxiety-like behaviors in the context of PTSD, with ACC neuronal activation potentially being implicated as a driver of this effect.
