Does Sharing Your Emotion Make You Feel Better? An Empirical Investigation on the Association Between Sharing Emotions on a Virtual Mood Wall and the Relief of Patients' Negative Emotions

Combining the Antenatal Risk Questionnaire and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale in Early Pregnancy in Danish Antenatal Care-A Qualitative Descriptive Study

Pregnant women with a history of mental disorders, neglect, or low social support are at increased risk of mental health problems. It is crucial to identify psychosocial risk factors in early pregnancy to reduce the risk of short- and long-term health consequences for mother and child. The Antenatal Risk Questionnaire has been found acceptable as a psychosocial screening tool among pregnant women in Australia, but it has not been tested in a Scandinavian context. The aim of this study was to explore the experiences of pregnant women when using the Antenatal Risk Questionnaire and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale as part of a model to identify psychosocial vulnerabilities in pregnancy in Denmark. We conducted individual interviews (n = 18) and used thematic analysis. We identified two main themes: (1) Feeling heard and (2) An occasion for self-reflection. Overall, the pregnant women deemed the online ANRQ/EPDS acceptable as a screening tool. The screening model provided a feeling of being heard and provided an occasion for self-reflection about mental health challenges related to pregnancy and motherhood. However, some women expressed that the screening raised concerns and fear of the consequences of answering honestly. A non-judgmental, open, emphatic, and reassuring approach by clinicians may help reduce stigma.

Lurking or active? The influence of user participation behavior in online mental health communities on the choice and evaluation of doctors

BACKGROUND

Web-based psychological counseling sites have become an important source of health information and expert assistance. Although many studies have suggested the feasibility and effectiveness of online consultation, there is an insufficient understanding of the influence of the distinction of users' participation behaviors online on health behavior decision-making.

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to investigate whether and how the differences in the online participation behaviors of users affect their doctor selection and evaluation characteristics.

METHODS

First, we collected information from 7,781 paid consultation clients from a professional mental health service platform in China. Effective indicators and variables were formed through data cleaning and classification. Next, we used a mixed methods research approach that included qualitative text analysis (topic and sentiment) and quantitative statistical analysis (ANOVA).

RESULTS

The ANOVA results show that differences in online participation behaviors (diving, searching and socializing) have a significant impact on doctor selection based on consultation price (F_7,780=6.05; P = 0.00), online service volume (F_7,780=4.76; P = 0.00), online reputation (F_7,780=4.30; P = 0.01) and online answers (F_7,780=5.76; P = 0.00). When evaluating doctors, the frequency of reviews (F_7,780=69.62; P = 0.00) and the average length of the text (F_7,780=15.33; P = 0.00) were significantly different among users. Two of the three topics, namely, service attitude (F_7,780=28.63; P = 0.00) and self-expression (F_7,780=40.83; P = 0.00), had significant effects. In addition, our results show that differences in participating behaviors have a significant impact on both the positive (F_7,780=7.30; P = 0.00) and negative (F_7,780=9.44; P = 0.00) emotions involved in evaluating doctors.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings provide preliminary insights for establishing the relationship between users' online information behavior and health decision-making. Further research should be conducted to verify the validity of the results and help apply them to the design of personalized customized services for the users in an online health community.

Users' Intention to Continue Using Online Mental Health Communities: Empowerment Theory Perspective

INTRODUCTION

Online mental health communities may provide new opportunities for rehabilitation for people with mental illness, so it is important to understand the factors that influence the continued use of online mental health communities by people with mental illness.

METHODS

From the perspective of empowerment, based on the theory of health self-efficacy and expectation confirmation, this study explored the mediating role of health self-efficacy and expectation confirmation in the empowerment process of patients in online mental health communities and users' intention to continue using online mental health communities. To verify this model, we obtained 272 valid questionnaires. The SmartPLS 3.0 software was selected for model construction and empirical analysis.

RESULTS

Health self-efficacy completely mediates the relationship between the empowerment process (i.e., emotional support, information support, helping others and sharing experiences) and users' intention to continue using an online mental health community. Expectation confirmation partially mediates the relationship between the empowerment process (i.e., information support and finding recognition) and users' intention to continue using an online mental health community.

CONCLUSION

The empowerment process is the main predictor of user health self-efficacy and expectation confirmation. This study has certain theoretical and practical significance for online mental health community research.

Why Do Users of Online Mental Health Communities Get Likes and Reposts: A Combination of Text Mining and Empirical Analysis

An online community is one of the important ways for people with mental disorders to receive assistance and obtain support. This study aims to help users with mental disorders to obtain more support and communication through online communities, and to provide community managers with the possible influence mechanisms based on the information adoption model. We obtained a total of 49,047 posts of an online mental health communities in China, over a 40-day period. Then we used a combination of text mining and empirical analysis. Topic and sentiment analysis were used to derive the key variables—the topic of posts that the users care about most, and the emotion scores contained in posts. We then constructed a theoretical model based on the information adoption model. As core independent variables of information quality, on online mental health communities, the topic of social experience in posts (0.368 ***), the topic of emotional expression (0.353 ***), and the sentiment contained in the text (0.002 *) all had significant positive relationships with the number of likes and reposts. This study found that the users of online mental health communities are more attentive to the topics of social experience and emotional expressions, while they also care about the non-linguistic information. This study highlights the importance of helping community users to post on community-related topics, and gives administrators possible ways to help users gain the communication and support they need.

Exploring the Effect of Market Conditions on Price Premiums in the Online Health Community

Online health communities allow doctors to fully use existing medical resources to serve remote patients. They broaden and diversify avenues of interaction between doctors and patients using Internet technology, which have built an online medical consultation market. In this study, the theory of supply and demand was adopted to explore how market conditions of online doctor resources impact price premiums of doctors’ online service. Then, we investigated the effect of the stigmatized diseases. We used resource supply and resource concentration to characterize the market conditions of online doctor resources and a dummy variable to categorize whether the disease is stigmatized or ordinary. After an empirical study of the dataset (including 68,945 doctors), the results indicate that: (1) the supply of online doctor resources has a significant and negative influence on price premiums; (2) compared with ordinary diseases, doctors treating stigmatized diseases can charge higher price premiums; (3) stigmatized diseases positively moderate the relationship between resource supply and price premiums; and (4) the concentration of online doctor resources has no significant influence on price premiums. Our research demonstrates that both the market conditions of online doctor resources and stigmatized diseases can impact price premiums in the online medical consultation market. The findings provide some new and insightful implications for theory and practice.

Well-being mediates the effects of social support and family function on self-management in elderly patients with hypertension

Previous studies have linked self-management with social support and family function. However, little is known about the mechanisms underlying these relationships. This study aimed to explore the underlying relationships between social support (family function) and self-management and to examine whether well-being mediated these relationships in elderly patients with hypertension. A cross-sectional design was used to study 517 elderly patients with hypertension. Demographics, self-management behaviors, social support, family function and well-being were collected by questionnaires. Results showed that social support, family function and well-being were separately associated with self-management behaviors. When social support, family function and well-being were included in the regression model simultaneously, social support and family function were no longer the significant predictors of self-management, demonstrating mediation. Using bootstrapping approach, 89.9% of the relationship between social support and self-management was explained by well-being, and 66.3% of the relationship between family function and self-management was explained by well-being. Improving self-management in patients with hypertension should be a comprehensive approach which should take social support, family function and well-being into account. Health providers should realize the importance of focusing on the promotion of well-being, especially among elderly hypertensive patients with low social support and low family function.
