Social media and caregivers' well-being: A scoping review and future research directions

Caregivers' well-being has become a major social concern, given the growing demand for long-term care support to meet the challenges of an aging society. As social media becomes substantially pervasive in daily life, the impacts of social media on caregivers' well-being are increasingly gaining public attention. Although research activities are active, studies on social media and caregivers' well-being lack consolidation and receive limited attention from researchers. To bridge the gaps, this study aims to consolidate the existing knowledge through a scoping review (with four databases: PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and CINAHL) and call for research on caregivers from the perspective of social media and well-being. Review results from forty eligible papers indicate that impacts of social media use on caregivers' well-being are not always positive, which encourages future research to provide more understanding of how to achieve positive effects and avoid adverse effects simultaneously. We also further discuss the findings and suggest future investigation opportunities.

Acquiring Social Support in an Online HPV Support Group: Exploring the Roles of Threat and Efficacy

Social media have become crucial communication channels for human papilloma virus (HPV) patients to seek and receive social support that can benefit their physical and psychological health. To promote supportive communication on online social platforms, we analyzed 96,543 messages, including 7,407 posts and 89,136 comments, concerning social support on Baidu HPV Forum, one of China's largest online HPV support groups. We examined factors (i.e., threat and efficacy) in posts requesting social support associated with the amount of social support received in comments. Results revealed that the majority of social support messages received in comments represented informational support, whereas relatively few comments featured instrumental social support. Beyond that, high-threat, non-efficacy posts requesting social support received a greater amount of informational and emotional support in the comments than other types of posts requesting social support. Theoretical and practical implications of our study are discussed as well.

Effect of social media interventions on the education and communication among patients with cancer: a systematic review protocol

INTRODUCTION

Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide. In addition, it accounted for approximately 10 million deaths in 2020 alone. Information and communication technologies have great potential for improving health education and communication. Social media is one of the technologies that can help patients with cancer and healthcare providers communicate and provide educational information. Social media are increasingly being used for health promotion and behaviour change. This is a protocol of systematic review to identify the effect of social media interventions on the education and communication among patients affected by cancer. This study aims to reveal the steps of conducting research that systematically reviews all studies for the specific objective. This study aims to examine the social media interventions to improve awareness and knowledge about the disease for patients with cancer and improve communication among them.

METHODS AND ANALYSIS

This protocol is reported in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Protocols checklist. We will include experimental design studies that report the effect of social media interventions on education and communication among patients with cancer or malignancy and any stage of the disease. Interventions will be inclusive, using all social network platforms for patients' communication and education. We will search PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus and the Cochrane Library from inception until 23 May 2022. Two independent reviewers will screen titles, abstracts and full-text articles with conflicts resolved through discussion or by a third reviewer, as needed. All titles, abstracts and full-text papers will be reviewed independently by two reviewers according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Discrepancies will resolve by discussion or SRNK if needed. The two reviewers will also independently complete risk of bias assessments for each included study. The descriptive analysis, including frequency and percentage parameters, will be calculated based on the study's variables. Furthermore, we will report the results of the quality assessment of studies in table format. In the result section, a narrative synthesis will be applied to describe and compare the paper's results.

ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION

Ethics approval will not be needed because the data to be used in this systematic review and meta-analysis will be extracted from published studies. It will be disseminated by publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

Online social support for cancer caregivers: alignment between requests and offers on CaringBridge

OBJECTIVES

Exploring CaringBridge, we describe types of social support caregivers requested, types of social support offered, and the alignment between the two.

RESEARCH APPROACH

A retrospective, longitudinal, descriptive approach.

SAMPLE

Twenty public CaringBridge sites.

METHODOLOGICAL APPROACH

The Social Support Behavior Code system was adapted and applied to cancer-caregiver journal entries (n = 389) and guestbook posts (n = 2,466) to identify types of support (emotional, esteem, informational, network, tangible, and no support requested/offered). Matches between requests and offers were examined.

FINDINGS

Cancer caregivers requested different types of support from their guests, most commonly emotional support. However, in most posts, caregivers did not request any support (n = 238, 61.18%). Guests offered all support types, but predominately offered emotional support (n = 2,353, 95%). When support was requested, 66.67% of requests received a matched offer within 24 hours.

INTERPRETATION

Social media platforms may provide all types of support to caregivers.

Improving cancer survivors' e-health literacy via online health communities (OHCs): a social support perspective

PURPOSE

Cancer survivors should have adequate e-health literacy to help them better use online health information. Online health communities (OHCs) can offer cancer survivors different types of social support that can represent another resource to improve health outcomes. However, there is little knowledge of how these OHC are directly related to a cancer survivors' e-health literacy. This study explores how different types of social support in OHCs are associated with cancer survivors' e-health literacy.

METHODS

A questionnaire was developed to collect data from two Chinese OHCs used by cancer survivors. The questionnaire is composed of two parts: six sociodemographic variables (i.e., gender, age, city, education, tenure, and prior Internet experience), two scales for informational support behaviors (i.e., health knowledge seeking and provision of health knowledge), a measure of emotional support within such a setting, and a measure of e-health literacy. Based on 162 complete samples, we determined the measurement properties of the scales used, provided descriptive statistics on major sociodemographic variables and conducted bivariate and multivariable hierarchical regression.

RESULTS

For cancer survivors, females demonstrate higher levels of e-health literacy. Higher education level was related to higher e-health literacy. Health knowledge seeking, contributing to health knowledge, and emotional support were all positively associated with e-health literacy. The interaction effect between health knowledge and emotional support is positively associated with e-health literacy.

CONCLUSIONS

Informational support and emotional support, as two major subtypes of social support within resources available in OHCs, are positively associated with e-health literacy among cancer survivors.

IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS

Cancer survivors might benefit from an active strategy for improving personal e-health literacy that includes more active informational involvement and emotional support rather than a passive lurking through e-health information and seeking and reading postings in OHCs.
