Abstract
The use of bio-stimulants in agriculture has emerged as a promising strategy to improve crop growth and yield. One type of bio-stimulant that has gained attention is microalgae extracts, which are known for their high metabolic activity, bioactive compounds, and ability to enhance plant growth and development. To investigate their effectiveness, a pot experiment was conducted at the Experimental Farm of Helwan University in Egypt during the 2022 season. The experiment aimed to evaluate the efficacy of Chlorella vulgaris, Nannochloropsis salina, and Arthrospira platensis (Spirulina platensis) extracts as bio-stimulants, applied through foliar spray at concentrations ranging from 0.25 to 2.0%, on common bean plants. Analysis of algal extract showed that . N. salina had the highest content of promotive growth hormones gibberellins (GA3) (74.85 ± 2.7mg100 g-1 d.wt). and auxins (IAA) (34.57 ± 2.7µg 100 g-1 d.wt.) compared to Chlorella and Arthrospira..The results revealed that the application of C. vulgaris, N. salina, and A. platensis extracts at concentrations up to 1.0% significantly improved various growth parameters, such as root, and shoot length, number of leaves and flowers per plant, leaf area, and total fresh and dry weight per plant. These extracts also positively affected yield attributes, including the number and fresh weight of pods per plant, seed index, seed yield per plant, and per feddan [a unit of land area]. Furthermore, the application of these extracts increased the chlorophyll content index with the maximum values of CCI (17.95. and 17.81%) was obtained at 0.50% N. salina, followed by 0.50% C.vulgaris. In addition to increase in the capacity of both non-enzymatic antioxidants [such as total antioxidant capacity, phenolics, and flavonoids] and enzymatic antioxidants [including catalase and ascorbic oxidase]. The most promising results were observed with the application of N. salina, and C. vulgaris extracts at a concentration of 0.5%. Additionally, the extracts significantly reduced the content of oxidative stress markers, such as malondialdehyde, percentage of electrolyte leakage, and hydrogen peroxide, in common bean plants compared to the control group. Contrarily, the measured parameters were reduced, while the levels of oxidative stress markers and some antioxidants including peroxidase, ascorbic peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione transferase were increased by three algal extracts at a concentration of 2.0%, compared to control plants. Additionally, the application of these microalgae extracts improved the quality parameters, proximate composition, seed energy, and mineral contents of the harvested seeds, with the most significant positive impact was observed at 0.5% concentration of algal extract. These findings demonstrate the successful and safe utilization of extracts from C. vulgaris, N. salina, and A. platensis at concentrations up to 1.0% as bio-stimulants to enhance common bean yields and improve the nutritional quality of dried beans for consumers.

Abstract
In the present study, a pot experiment was conducted to investigate the response of rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) plants to foliar application of Spirulina platensis at 0.0, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.4%; soil irrigation with heavy metals (Cd nitrate, Pb acetate, and Cd + Pb, each at 100 ppm), and Spirulina platensis at 0.1% + heavy metals. Spirulina platensis significantly improved growth parameters, oil yield/fed, photosynthetic pigments, and activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione reductase (GR), catalase (CAT), and polyphenol oxidase (PPO) with a maximum promoting effect at 0.2% algal extract. On the other hand, heavy metal stress reduced growth criteria, photosynthetic pigments, and oil yield, while, significantly increased levels of antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT, GR) and corresponding non-enzymatic antioxidants (ascorbic acid, total antioxidant capacity, phenolics and flavonoids). Bioaccumulation factor (BF) and translocation factor (TF) indicated that Cd and Pb accumulated largely in the roots, with little transfer to the shoots. Nevertheless, compared with heavy metal treatments, S. platensis at 0.1% significantly increasing growth parameters, oil content, photosynthetic pigments, and the activity of non-enzymatic and enzymatic antioxidants, while, slightly reduced TF of Cd and Pb, alleviated membrane lipid peroxidation, and significantly lowered the content of malondialdehyde, hydrogen peroxide, and indole acetic acid oxidase (IAAO) activity in heavy metal (Cd, Pb, and Cd + Pb)-treated rosemary plants.

Abstract
The antitumor activity of zero-valent selenium (Se0) nanoparticles stabilized by chitosan and its oligosaccharides having molecular weights 3 k, 65 k, and 600 k Da, was investigated. The nanoparticles stabilized with high molecular weight chitosan not only released selenium more easily compared with low molecular weight chitosan, but were also taken up by HepG2 cells more easily through electrostatic effect. Moreover, these were more efficient in inhibiting HepG2 cell viability. High ROS levels of cancer cells could easily induce selenium release from these nanoparticles, and oxidize the less toxic Se0 to highly toxic Se4+. The latter could not only consume antioxidant enzymes, but also cause mitochondrial dysfunction and cell apoptosis. Study of antitumor efficacy and side effect on a HepG2 xenograft BALB/c nude mice model exhibited that CS-Se0NPs had a higher selectivity for cancer cells; however, their effect on normal cells, which have relatively lower ROS levels, was limited.

Abstract
The elimination of cyanobacteria blooms has become an urgent concern in aquatic environmental protection. Allelopathic control is considered a potential approach because of its exclusive and ecological safety properties. The present study evaluated the allelopathic effect of juglone, a derivative from the genus Juglans, on the toxic Microcystis aeruginosa. Juglone at 3.0-9.0 mg L-1 notably depressed the cell proliferation of M. aeruginosa. The cell abundance treated by 9.0 mg L-1 juglone decreased by 75% after an 11-day exposure. The antioxidant enzyme activity (SOD and CAT) in juglone groups increased remarkably, suggesting juglone-induced oxidant stress in the M. aeruginosa cells. Juglone exposure enhanced the intracellular and extracellular microcystin contents per cell. Nonetheless, the total amount of microcystins in the juglone-treated cyanobacterial system did not increase because of the decreased cell abundance. These results indicated the application potential of juglone for M. aeruginosa extermination.

Abstract
Finasteride (FIN) inhibits neurosteroid synthesis and potentially improves the course of hepatic encephalopathy (HE). This study aimed to investigate the effects of FIN on brain oxidative stress and acetylcholinesterase (AchE) activity in acute thioacetamide-induced HE in rats. Male Wistar rats were divided into groups: 1. control; 2. thioacetamide-treated group (TAA; 900 mg/kg); 3. finasteride-treated group (FIN; 150 mg/kg); 4. group treated with FIN and TAA (FIN+TAA). Daily doses of FIN (50 mg/kg) and TAA (300 mg/kg) were administered intraperitoneally during three days and in FIN+TAA group FIN was administered 2h before every dose of TAA. FIN pretreatment prevented TAA-induced rise in malondialdehyde level in the cortex due to restoration of catalase activity and increased expression of superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) and induced an increase in malondialdehyde level in the thalamus due to reduction of glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and glutathione reductase (GR) activity. Although FIN pretreatment did not affect malondialdehyde level in hippocampus and caudate nucleus, hippocampal SOD1 expression was higher (p<0.05) and GR activity lower in FIN+TAA vs. TAA group (p<0.05). GPx activity was lower in caudate nucleus in FIN+TAA vs. TAA group (p<0.01). FIN pretreatment prevented TAA-induced rise in AchE activity in the thalamus and caudate nucleus and AchE activity correlates inversely in the thalamus (p<0.05) and positively in caudate nucleus (p<0.01) with malondialdehyde level. FIN has regionally selective effects on oxidative stress and AchE activity in the brain in acute TAA-induced HE in rats. The prooxidant role of FIN in the thalamus may be causally linked with inhibition of AchE.

Abstract
Background The aim of the study was to evaluate parameters of oxidative and nitrosative stress as well as antioxidative parameters in a group of renal transplant recipients with stable graft function and no clinical signs of cardiovascular disease. We also aimed to determine the correlations among these parameters and to evaluate potential differences in all the biomarkers with regard to the immunosuppression protocol. Methods We enrolled 57 renal transplant recipients and 31 controls who were age and sex matched with the renal transplant recipients. All of the patients included in this study had post-renal transplant surgery at least 12 months earlier and were on standard immunosuppressive therapy. In this study, we determined thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances in plasma and red blood cells and advanced oxidation protein products, nitrosative stress parameters (asymmetric and symmetric dimethylarginine – ADMA and SDMA), and antioxidative parameters (total SH groups and catalase activity). Results The results of our study demonstrated that the levels of oxidative and nitrosative stress were significantly increased compared to the healthy population (p<0.01 except for plasma catalase activity p<0.05). Correlation analysis showed significant positive correlations between: ADMA and SDMA (p<0.01); ADMA and nitrates (p<0.05); SDMA and nitrates (p<0.05); between OS parameters in the experimental group; AOPP and SH groups (p<0.05) and TBARS in plasma and SH groups (p<0.01), SDMA and AOPP (p< 0.05); SDMA and TBARS in plasma (p<0.05); SDMA and SH groups (p<0.01); nitrates and SH groups (p<0.05). Conclusion There was no significant difference in oxidative and nitrosative stress parameters with respect to the immunosuppressive protocol.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cardiovascular (CV) morbidity and mortality rates are still higher after kidney transplantation than in general population. It is known that oxidative and nitrosative stress may contribute to the progress of CV disease in a post-transplant period, but still gender aspect has not been elucidated completely. The aim of this study was to analyze the gender differences in the oxidative and nitrosative stress parameters, as well as asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) and symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA) levels among kidney transplant patients on tacrolimus-based immunosuppression. METHODS Our research included 35 patients (20 men and 15 women) with renal transplant and 25 healthy volunteers. Patients were on chronic immunosuppressive regimen, which included tacrolimus, mycophenolate mofetil and prednisone. In order to estimate oxidative and nitrosative stress, we determined plasma levels of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS), activity of catalase (CAT), levels of total (protein and non-protein) sulfhydryl (SH) groups, advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP), ADMA and SDMA, as well as nitrite/nitrate (NOx) ratio. RESULTS TBARS, CAT and SH in plasma were significantly higher in male patients than in female patients (p < 0.05, p < 0.01 and p < 0.05, respectively). There were no gender-dependent differences in AOPP, ADMA, SDMA and NOx in kidney transplant patients. Correlation analysis, Pearson and Spearman, showed significant correlations between tested oxidative and nitrosative stress parameters in male kidney transplant patients. Alternatively, in female patients, there were no significant correlations between tested parameters. CONCLUSION Our findings show that men might be more prone to oxidative damage than women. ADMA, the proven marker of CV morbidity and mortality, may be more significant in male kidney transplant patients concerning oxidative stress control of its level and function.

Abstract
Oxidative stress is revealed as the main contributor in the pathophysiology of neuroinflammation. Analyzing plasma and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients with different clinical phenotypes of neuroinflammation, defined as clinically isolated syndrome (CIS), and those defined as relapsing remitting multiples sclerosis (RRMS), we tested peripheral and CNS oxidative stress intensity in these neuroinflammatory acute attacks. All obtained values changes were assessed regarding clinical and radiological features of CNS inflammation. The obtained results revealed an increase in malondialdehyde levels in plasma and CSF in CIS and RRMS patients compared to control values (p < 0.05). The obtained values were most prevailed in both study group, CIS and RRMS, in patients with severe clinical presentation (p < 0.05). Measured activities of catalase and total superoxide dismutase were higher in CIS and RRMS patients in plasma compared to control values (p < 0.05), parallel with an increased catalase activity and decrease in superoxide dismutase activity in CSF regarding values obtained in control group (p < 0.05). The positive correlations regarding clinical score were obtained for all tested biomarkers (p < 0.01). Although the positive correlations were observed in MDA levels in plasma and CSF, for both study patients, and their radiological findings (p < 0.01), and a negative correlation in plasma SOD activity and CIS patients' radiological findings (p < 0.01), no other similar correlations were obtained. These findings might be useful in providing the earliest antioxidative treatment in neuroinflammation aimed to preserve total and CNS antioxidative capacity parallel with delaying irreversible, later neurological disabilities.
