Abstract
Having no adverse effects on the consumer's health, causing zero or minimal damage to the environment, and maintaining the nutritional quality of the product are too important criteria for food packaging materials. Edible biofilm packaging techniques are successful to meet many of these features. To strengthen this claim, rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) fillets were coated with an edible film solution (obtained from quinoa starch), which attracted a lot of attention in terms of nutritional value. The prepared biofilm solutions were applied in four different groups (control, quinoa, quinoa + black seed oil, and quinoa + mint oil) and stored in refrigerator conditions (4 ± 1 °C) for 15 days. Microbiological (total aerobic mesophilic bacteria, psychrophilic bacteria, Pseudomonas, lactic acid bacteria, and Enterobacteriaceae) and chemical analyses (TBARS, TVB-N, pH) were performed on certain days of storage. At the end of the study, it was stated that coating fish fillets with edible quinoa, which was enriched by black cumin and mint essential oils, had positive chemical and microbiological results. The highest value for pH was 7.03 ± 0.09 obtained in the control group. It was found that black seed oil has antimicrobial specifications via slowing the microorganism development and prolongs the storage time. The TVB-N value was below the consumable limit value (25 mg/100 g) in the treatment groups and the TBARS value was lowest (1.62 ± 0.21 μmolMA/kg) in the black seed oil group. Consequently, it is suggested that black seed oil may be used on trout fillets to prolong storage time.

Abstract
Medicinal plants can be potential sources of therapeutic agents. Traditional healers use a medicinal plant from Ethiopia, Bersama abyssinica Fresen, to treat various diseases. This study aimed to investigate the phytochemical components and antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of B. abyssinica seed extracts (BASE). Gas chromatography coupled to mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) analysis was used to determine the phytochemical compositions of BASE. The antioxidant activities were assessed by using 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay, thiobarbituric acid-reactive species (TBARS) assay, ferric chloride reducing assay and hydroxyl scavenging capacity assay. Antimicrobial activity was investigated using the agar well diffusion method. Phytochemical screening showed the presence of saponins, glycosides, tannins, steroids, phenols, flavonoids, terpenoids, and alkaloids. GC-MS analysis revealed the presence of 30 volatile compounds; α-pinene (23.85%), eucalyptol (20.74%), β-pinene (5.75%), D-limonene (4.05%), and o-cymene (5.02%). DPPH-induced free radical scavenging (IC50 = 8.78), TBARS (IC50 = 0.55 µg/mL), and hydroxyl radicals' scavenging capacities assays (IC50 = 329.23) demonstrated high antioxidant effects of BASE. Reducing power was determined based on Fe3+-Fe2+ transformation in the presence of extract. BASE was found to show promising antibacterial activity against S. aureus, E. coli, and P. aeruginosa (zone of inhibition 15.7 ± 2.5 mm, 16.0 ± 0.0 mm, and 16.7 ± 1.5 mm, respectively), but excellent antifungal activities against C. albican and M. furfur (zone of inhibition 22.0 ± 2.0 mm and 22.0 ± 4.0 mm, respectively). The seeds of B. abyssinica grown in Ethiopia possess high antioxidant potential, promising antibacterial and superior antifungal activity. Therefore, seeds of B. abyssinica provide a potential source for drug discovery.

Abstract
The rapid growth in the use of aluminum oxide nanoparticles (Al2O3 NPs) in various fields such as medicine, pharmacy, cosmetics industries and engineering, and the fact that these NPs and their wastes mix with the aquatic environment and damage the aquatic ecosystem, affect the organisms in the water, enter the food chain and reach humans is a major problem is cause for concern. The aim of this study is to investigate the oxidative stress caused by two separate forms of aluminum oxide, γ-Al2O3 and α-Al2O3, in Gammarus pulex, which is a good indicator species, with biochemical parameters. For this purpose, G. pulex was exposed to different concentrations (0, 10, 20, 40 ppm) of γ-Al2O3 and α-Al2O3 separately. The experiments were carried out for 24 and 96 h by creating 3 repeated experimental groups consisting of 4 groups. For biomarker analysis, superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) activities and glutathione (GSH) and thiobarbituric acid (TBARS) levels were performed using an ELISA kit. As a result of the in experimental study, it was observed that both nanoparticles affected oxidative stress and antioxidant parameters after 96 h compared to the control group. Increases in SOD activity were observed, γ-Al2O3 caused a decrease in CAT activity at 24 h, and α- Al2O3 caused increases in CAT activity at 96 h. Decreases in GSH levels and increases in TBARS levels have been observed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Statin monotherapy for dyslipidemia is limited by adverse effects and limited effectiveness in certain subgroups like metabolic syndrome. Add-on therapy with an agent with a known safety profile may improve clinical outcomes, and virgin coconut oil (VCO) may be the candidate agent for improving the cardiometabolic profile. The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of add-on VCO with atorvastatin in dyslipidemia in adults. METHODS A randomized, double-blind clinical trial was conducted on 150 patients with dyslipidemia who were randomized into control and test groups. The control group received atorvastatin monotherapy, whereas the test group received add-on VCO with atorvastatin for 8 weeks. At baseline, demographic, clinical, and biochemical parameters were assessed and repeated after 8 weeks of therapy. The main outcome measures were lipid profile, cardiovascular risk indices, 10-year cardiovascular risk, body fat compositions, and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS). RESULTS The increase in HDL in the test group was significantly greater than in the control group (MD: 2.76; 95%CI: 2.43-3.08; p < 0.001). The changes in the atherogenic index (p = 0.003), coronary risk index (p < 0.001), cardiovascular risk index (p = 0.001), and TBARS (p < 0.001) were significantly greater in the test group. The decrease in LDL, total cholesterol and lipoprotein(a), were significantly higher in the control group. There were no significant differences between the groups with respect to the changes in triglyceride, VLDL, and 10-year cardiovascular risk. CONCLUSIONS Add-on VCO (1000 mg/day) with atorvastatin (10 mg/day) can achieve a better clinical outcome in patients with dyslipidemia by increasing HDL and improving oxidative stress cardiovascular risk indices.

Abstract
The Maillard reaction occurs during the frying of batter-coated meat products, resulting in the production of advanced glycosylation products that are harmful to human health. This study investigated the effects of frying temperature (140, 150, 160, 170 and 180 ℃) and time (80, 100, 120, 140 and 160 s) on the quality, advanced glycation end product (AGE) level and the relationship between these parameters in batter-coated meat products were investigated. The results showed that with an increase in frying temperature and time, the moisture content of the batter-coated meat products gradually decreased, the thiobarbituric Acid Reactive Substance (TBARS) values and oil content increased to 0.37 and 21.7 %, respectively, and then decreased, and CML and CEL content increased to 7.30 and 4.86 mg/g, respectively. Correlation analysis showed that the moisture content and absorbance at 420 nm, as well as TBARS values, were highly correlated with the oil content in batter-coated meat products. Additionally, the absorbance at 420 nm and TBARS levels were significantly correlated with AGE levels. Moreover, the AGE content in batter-coated meat products was less variable at lower frying temperatures or shorter frying times, and the influence of temperature on AGE formation was greater than that of time. Overall, these findings may help to better control the cooking conditions of batter-coated meat products based on AGE profiles.

Abstract
The pericarp of Szechuan pepper is rich in phenols and alkylamides, making it a potential source of antioxidant compounds. Despite being recognized as the primary antioxidants in Szechuan pepper, there is still limited knowledge about their application in real food systems. This study aims to identify, separate, and apply polyphenol and alkylamide fractions derived from Szechuan extracts to beef meat. Using HPLC-MS2, we identified 5 phenols and 11 alkylamides in Szechuan extracts. The quality of the minced meat was evaluated based on color, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), conjugated dienes, carbonyl content, Sulfhydryl content, microbiological content, and total volatile basic nitrogen content (TVB-N). Compared to the polyphenol fraction (1.25 mg/mL), alkylamide fraction (25 mg/mL), and control samples, beef samples incorporated with the polyphenol fraction (6.25 mg/mL) significantly reduced carbonyl content, TBARS, and TVB-N values at the end of storage. Furthermore, they exhibited a significant slowdown in microbial development, improved meat color stability, and preserved pH. Therefore, the use of Szechuan pepper fractions as natural preservatives in meat and meat products is an important area of research and has the potential to enhance the safety and quality of meat products.

Abstract
Meat and meat products are prone to the microbial and chemical spoilage, due to the high nutritional content. This study investigated the effect of polylactic acid (PLA) films incorporated with ajwain essential oil (AEO) on microbial (total viable count [TVC], psychrotrophic bacterial count [PTC], Enterobacteriaceae, Pseudomonas spp., yeast and mold (Y&M), and also Bacillus coagulans [BCG]), chemical (pH, peroxide value [PV], thiobarbituric acid-reactive substance [TBARS], and TVN values), and sensorial properties of beef patties, as well as survivability of BCG during refrigerated storage. Results showed that all microbial counts of samples were significantly increased, except BCG, during storage but the lowest TVC of samples was achieved in samples wrapped with PLA-1% AEO (8 log colony forming units per gram [CFU/g]) at 12th of storage, which is significantly lower than control treatments (10.66 log CFU/g). The best results in all treatments are those wrapped by PLA-1% AEO in all evaluated characteristics. At the final day of storage, PTC (8.82 log CFU/g), Enterobacteriaceae (5.05 log CFU/g), Pseudomonas spp. (9.08 log CFU/g), Y&M (4.69 log CFU/g), and also pH (4.5), PV (5.12 meq/kg), TBARS (2.92 MDA/kg), and TVN (14.43 mgN/100 g) values of PLA-1% AEO treatments were significantly lower than control samples. AEO-PLA films reduce the survival of BCG in raw patties, which reached 6.19 log CFU/g in PLA-1% AEO treatments, although increasing the concentration of AEO in packaging PLA films led to the maintenance of BCG viability during the cooking process by increasing the AEO in PLA films. Overall, results showed shelf life of beef patties is extended 3 days more (150%) by wrapping with PLA films incorporated with 1% AEO.

Abstract
Morphine (MPH) is widely used for pain management; however, long-term MPH therapy results in antinociceptive tolerance and physical dependence, limiting its clinical use. Zingerone (ZIN) is a natural phenolic compound with neuroprotective effects. We investigated the effects of single and repeated doses of ZIN on MPH-induced tolerance, dependence, and underlying biochemical mechanisms. After a dose-response experiment, tolerance was developed to MPH (10 mg/kg, i.p.) for seven days. In the single-dose study, ZIN was administered on day seven. In the repeated-dose study, ZIN was administered for seven days. Naloxone (5 mg/kg, i.p., 120 min after MPH) was injected to assess withdrawal signs on day seven. The levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), nitric oxide (NO), total thiol (TT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) were measured in the prefrontal cortex. The protein levels of interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) and NLRP3-ASC-Caspase-1 axis were assessed by ELISA and Western blotting, respectively. Results showed that ZIN (100 mg/kg) had no antinociceptive activity, and subsequent experiments were performed at this dose. Repeated ZIN reversed MPH antinociceptive tolerance, whereas single ZIN did not. Single and repeated ZIN attenuated naloxone-induced jumping. In addition, repeated ZIN significantly inhibited weight loss. Repeated ZIN suppressed the MPH-induced increase in TBARS, NO, IL-1β, NLRP3, ASC, and Caspase-1. It also inhibited MPH-induced TT and GPx reduction. In contrast, single ZIN had no effect. Findings suggest that ZIN reduces MPH-induced tolerance and dependence by suppressing oxidative stress and NLRP3 inflammasome activation. This study provides a novel therapeutic approach to reduce the side effects of MPH.

Abstract
Aim: To find a practical biomonitoring method for researchers exposed to nanoparticles causing oxidative stress. Methods: In a continuation of a study in 2016-2018, biological samples (plasma, urine and exhaled breath condensate [EBC]) were collected in 2019-2020 from 43 researchers (13.8 ± 3.0 years of exposure) and 45 controls. Antioxidant status was assessed using glutathione (GSH) and ferric-reducing antioxidant power, while oxidative stress was measured as thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, all using spectrophotometric methods. Researchers' personal nanoparticle exposure was monitored. Results: Plasma GSH was elevated in researchers both before and after exposure (p < 0.01); postexposure plasma GSH correlated with nanoparticle exposure, and GSH in EBC increased. Conclusion: The results suggest adaptation to chronic exposure to nanoparticles, as monitored by plasma and EBC GSH.

Abstract
AIMS Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) is a common complication that increases mortality and leads to long-term cognitive impairment in sepsis survivors. However, no specific or effective therapy has been identified for this complication. Piperine is an alkaloid known for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and neuroprotective properties, which are important characteristics for treatment of SAE. The objective of this study was to evaluate the neuroprotective effect of piperine on SAE in C57BL/6 mice that underwent cecum ligation and perforation surgery (CLP). MAIN METHODS C57BL/6 male mice were randomly assigned to groups that underwent SHAM surgery or CLP. Mice in the CLP group were treated with piperine at doses of 20 or 40 mg/kg for short- (5 days) or long-term (10 days) periods after CLP. KEY FINDINGS Our results revealed that untreated septic animals exhibited increased concentrations of IL-6, TNF, VEGF, MMP-9, TBARS, and NLRP3, and decreased levels of BDNF, sulfhydryl groups, and catalase in the short term. Additionally, the levels of carbonylated proteins and degenerated neuronal cells were increased at both time points. Furthermore, short-term and visuospatial memories were impaired. Piperine treatment reduced MMP-9 activity in the short term and decreased the levels of carbonylated proteins and degenerated neuronal cells in the long term. It also lowered IL-6 and TBARS levels at both time points evaluated. Moreover, piperine increased short-term catalase and long-term BDNF factor levels and improved memory at both time points. SIGNIFICANCE In conclusion, our data demonstrate that piperine exerts a neuroprotective effect on SAE in animals that have undergone CLP.

Abstract
This study tested the hypothesis that dietary supplementation with glycine enhances the synthesis and concentrations of glutathione (GSH, a major antioxidant) in tissues of pigs with intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). At weaning (21 d of age), IUGR pigs and litter mates with normal birth weights (NBW) were assigned randomly to one of two groups, representing supplementation with 1% glycine or 1.19% l-alanine (isonitrogenous control) to a corn- and soybean meal-based diet. Blood and other tissues were obtained from the pigs within 1 wk after the feeding trial ended at 188 d of age to determine GSH, oxidized GSH (GSSG), and activities of GSH-metabolic enzymes. Results indicated that concentrations of GSH + GSSG or GSH in plasma, liver, and jejunum (P < 0.001) and concentrations of GSH in longissimus lumborum and gastrocnemius muscles (P < 0.05) were lower in IUGR pigs than in NBW pigs. In contrast, IUGR increased GSSG/GSH ratios (an indicator of oxidative stress) in plasma (P < 0.001), jejunum (P < 0.001), both muscles (P < 0.05), and pancreas (P = 0.001), while decreasing activities of γ-glutamylcysteine synthetase and GSH synthetase in liver (P < 0.001) and jejunum (P < 0.01); and GSH reductase in jejunum (P < 0.01), longissimus lumborum muscle (P < 0.01), gastrocnemius muscle (P < 0.05), and pancreas (P < 0.01). In addition, IUGR pigs had greater (P < 0.001) concentrations of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS; an indicator of lipid peroxidation) in plasma, jejunum, muscles, and pancreas than NBW pigs. Compared with isonitrogenous controls, dietary glycine supplementation increased concentrations of GSH plus GSSG and GSH in plasma (P < 0.01), liver (P < 0.001), jejunum (P < 0.001), longissimus lumborum muscle (P = 0.001), and gastrocnemius muscle (P < 0.05); activities of GSH-synthetic enzymes in liver (P < 0.01) and jejunum (P < 0.05), while reducing GSSG/GSH ratios in plasma (P < 0.001), jejunum (P < 0.001), longissimus lumborum muscle (P < 0.001), gastrocnemius muscle (P = 0.01), pancreas (P < 0.05), and kidneys (P < 0.01). Concentrations of GSH plus GSSG, GSH, and GSSG/GSH ratios in kidneys were not affected (P > 0.05) by IUGR. Furthermore, glycine supplementation reduced (P < 0.001) TBARS concentrations in plasma, jejunum, muscles, and pancreas. Collectively, IUGR reduced GSH availability and induced oxidative stress in pig tissues, and these abnormalities were prevented by dietary glycine supplementation in a tissue-specific manner.

Abstract
This study was conducted to examine the effect of cooking at different temperatures on the formation of Nε-(carboxymethyl) lysine (CML) after adding Paliurus spina-christi Mill. (PSC), Celtis tournefortii L. (CT) fruits, and Nigella Sativa L. (NS) seeds to the meatballs. Phytochemical and bioactivity properties were determined before adding PSC, CT fruits, and NS seeds to the meatballs. Then, PSC, CT fruits, and NS seeds were added to the meatballs at a rate of 2% and stored at 4 ± 1 °C for 16 days. CML, TBARS, pH, and aw analyses were performed on the meatballs. The highest phytochemical and bioactivity levels were detected in PSC fruit. The aw values detected in the meatball groups were found to be between 0.931 and 0.951 on the 0th day and between 0.963 and 0.985 on the 16th day, and the pH values ranged from 5.66 to 6.06 on the 0th day and from 6.10 to 6.74 on the 16th day. TBARS values of the meatballs were found to be between 1.17 and 1.98 on day 0 and 1.70-3.34 mg MDA/kg on day 16. CML levels in the meatballs were determined to be between 11.15 and 13.45 on day 0 and between 13.43 and 18.17 μg/g on day 16. The highest a* value was found in the meatballs with added CT fruit. It was determined that NS seeds had a negative effect on the a* value of the meatballs. In conclusion, adding PSC, CT fruits, and NS seeds can imbue meatballs with functional properties, thereby creating a more health-beneficial product for humans.

Abstract
Objective This study aimed to demonstrate whether fullerenol C60, sevoflurane anesthesia, or a combination of both had protective effects on the liver and kidneys in lower extremity ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) in mice with streptozocin-induced diabetes. Methods A total of 46 Swiss albino mice were divided into six groups as follows: control group (group C, n=7), diabetes group (group D, n=7), diabetes-ischemia/reperfusion (group DIR, n=8), diabetes-ischemia/reperfusion-fullerenol C60 (group DIR-FC60, n=8), diabetes-ischemia/reperfusion-sevoflurane (group DIR-S, n=8), and the diabetes-ischemia/reperfusion-fullerenol C60-sevoflurane (group DIR-S-FC60, n=8). Fullerenol C60 (100mg/kg) was administered intraperitoneally 30 min before the ischemia-reperfusion procedure to the fullerenol groups (DIR-FC60 and DIR-S-FC60). In the DIR groups, 2 hours (h) ischemia-2h reperfusion periods were performed. In the sevoflurane groups, sevoflurane was applied during the ischemia-reperfusion period with 100% O2. Liver and kidney tissues were removed at the end of the reperfusion procedure for biochemical and histopathological examinations. Results In liver tissue, hydropic degeneration, sinusoidal dilatation, pycnotic nuclei, prenecrotic cells, and mononuclear cell infiltration in parenchyma were significantly more frequent in group DIR than in groups D and group C. In terms of the histopathologic criteria examined, more positive results were seen in group DIR-FC60, and when group DIR-FC60 was compared with group DIR, the difference was significant. The best results in AST, ALT, glucose, TBARS levels, and SOD enzyme activities in liver tissue were in group DIR-FC60 compared with group DIR, followed by groups DIR-S-FC60 and DIR-S, respectively. Regarding TBARS levels and SOD enzyme activities in kidney tissue, the best results were in groups DIR-FC60, DIR-S-FC60, and DIR-S, respectively. Conclusion According to our findings, it is clear that fullerenol C60 administered intraperitoneally 30 min before ischemia, alone or together with sevoflurane, reduces oxidative stress in distant organ damage caused by lower extremity IRI, and reduces liver and kidney tissue damage in histopathologic examinations.

Abstract
Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), carbonyls and reactive oxygen species (ROS) are oxidant compounds that can provide useful information on the oxidative status. Pigs can be affected by oxidative stress in different situations including physiological conditions such as lactation and also in different diseases, and the measurement of these three analytes in saliva could be potentially useful as biomarkers of the redox status in this species. Assays for the measurement of TBARS and carbonyls by spectrophotometry and ROS by luminol-based chemiluminescence in pigs' saliva were analytically validated and were applied in saliva of pigs after an in vitro incubation with different doses of ascorbic acid (AA). All the assays showed a satisfactory analytical precision and accuracy. The 240 h-incubation of saliva samples with 60 mM of AA induced to an increased TBARS and carbonyls production. TBARS, carbonyls and ROS can be estimated in saliva of pigs by the assays validated in this report. In addition, these assays can detect changes in the concentration of these analytes associated to incubation of saliva samples with AA.

Abstract
Human fertility regulation is a major way to control overpopulation. In this perspective, this study emphasized the in vitro effect of hydro-methanol extract of Tinospora cordifolia (TCHME) stem for spermicidal and reproductive hypo-functions using human and rat samples. Control, 0.5-, 1-, and 2-mg TCHME-charged groups were considered to assess the relevant parameters. Levels of spermiological parameters like sperm motility, viability, the integrity of plasma and acrosomal membrane, and nuclear chromatin decondensation were significantly reduced (p < 0.05) in the dose- and duration-dependent TCHME-charged groups compared to the control. The inhibitory concentration 50 (IC50) of TCHME on motile human and rat sperms were 0.8 and 0.4 mg/ml, respectively. Testicular androgenic key enzymes and antioxidant enzymes (human sperm pellet, testes, and epididymis of rat)' activities were significantly diminished (p < 0.05), while antioxidant enzymes' activities were significantly elevated (p < 0.05) in renal and insignificantly (p > 0.05) elevated in hepatic tissues of rat in TCHME-charged groups compared to the control. Significant elevation (p < 0.05) of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS)' level in human sperm pellet, testes, and epididymis of rats and significant diminution (p < 0.05) in TBARS levels of liver and kidney were observed in TCHME-charged groups. It focused that TCHME is more potent for stress imposition on reproductive tissues and sperm compared to the other tested tissues. Non-significant alterations (p > 0.05) in glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT) and glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT) activities in the said organs of rat indicated its non-toxic effect. It highlighted that TCHME possesses spermicidal and reproductive tissue-specific effects which strengthen the possibilities of male contraceptive development from it.

Abstract
Optimizing blood loss during the slaughtering process is crucial for obtaining high-quality meat, as the presence of meat blood can lead to a reduction in shelf life and negative sensory evaluation by consumers. Moreover, the high water and nutritional content of the meat, along with its appropriate pH value, necessitate careful consideration of the remaining blood, as it can support microbial spoilage of chicken meat. In this context the effects of making an extra cut on conventionally halal-slaughtered broiler's leg which had an extra cut at the cartilage point where the drumstick and the claw part meet, before the bloodletting process were analysed. The results of the analysis indicate that making an additional cut on the drumsticks does not adversely affect the overall quality of chicken meat. Determination of peroxide value (PV) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) analyses were performed to analyze the degree of lipid oxidation. The PV and the TBARS value were higher in the drumsticks which have extra cut compared to the uncut samples. L*, a*, and b* values of extra cut thigh meats are higher. However, considering the storage period, the ninth day values in the cut thigh meats were found to be lower than the first day results of the chickens drumsticks do not have an extra cut procedure. As the storage period of chicken drumsticks progressed, as expected, the L* value decreased, while a* value and b* value increased over time. As regards sexes of broilers, it was observed that the Pseudomonas spp of female broilers with extra cut in the cartilage tissue of their legs on d 1 was significantly higher than the male broilers. These findings suggest that this innovative method holds significant potential for widespread application.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Few previous studies indicated the role of oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of childhood idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), but there are little data regarding changes in redox balance in different forms of the disease, and changes after therapeutic procedures. We aimed to investigate the values of pro-oxidants and antioxidative capacity in various forms of ITP before and after the applying therapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS The research included 102 children, classified into the following groups: (1) newly diagnosed ITP (ndITP), (2) persistent ITP, (3) chronic ITP (chITP), and (4) control groups: (A) healthy control and (B) previously experienced ITP-healthy children who had been suffering from ITP earlier. During the clinical assessment, a blood sample was taken from the patients, from which the value of pro-oxidants (index of lipid peroxidation measured as TBARS, nitrites [NO2 -], as measurement of nitric oxide [NO] production, superoxide anion radical [O2 -], and hydrogen peroxide [H2O2]) and the capacity of antioxidant protection (activity of superoxide dismutase and catalase, and quantity of reduced glutathione) were determined spectrophotometrically. RESULTS Our results demonstrated that values of pro-oxidants, especially reflected through the TBARS and O2 -, were the highest in the ndITP and exacerbated chITP groups. Also, the activity of the endogenous antioxidative defense system was the lowest in these groups. Intravenous immunoglobulin therapy in the ndITP group exerted the most prominent effect on the redox balance. CONCLUSION It can be concluded that severity and exacerbation of the ITP are closely related to the redox status.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although it is well known that obesity is frequently associated with reduced levels of habitual physical activity (HPA), which contributes to determining severe oxidative stress and inflammatory state, this association is however unknown in preschoolers so far. This study aimed to investigate the association between biomarkers of redox status and cytokines with different patterns of HPA according to the adiposity of preschoolers. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted in 50 preschoolers (25 overweight/obese, OW/OB and 25 eutrophic, EU), matched for age, sex, economic level, and maternal education. Total antioxidant capacity (TAC), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities, substances reactive to thiobarbituric acid (TBARS), soluble tumor necrosis factor receptors (sTNFRs), and leptin levels were evaluated. HPA levels were evaluated by accelerometry (ActiGraph GT9X accelerometer). Correlation, multiple linear regression, and partial least squares regression analysis were used to determine the association between redox status biomarkers and cytokines with different patterns of HPA (HPA level, bouts of moderate to vigorous physical activity [MVPA], and multivariate pattern of HPA) in EU and OW/OB preschoolers. RESULTS OW/OB preschoolers had lower CAT activity, higher levels of TAC, TBARS, and cytokines, and similar levels of HPA to EU preschoolers. In EU preschoolers, SOD activity exhibited a stronger negative association with moderate intensity ranges of HPA (R2 = 0.18), and negative correlation with sTNFRs (r = -0.40 to -0.46). TBARS had a stronger positive association with ranges of light intensity in the multivariate pattern of HPA (R2 = 0.10). In OW/OB preschoolers, the HPA multivariate associative pattern was predominantly from vigorous intensity ranges. Thus, SOD activity had a positive association with the multivariate pattern of HPA (R2 = 0.38) and MVPA bouts (β [95% CI] = 0.457 [0.0026. 0.0576]). TAC had a negative association with the multivariate pattern of HPA (R2 = 0.38) and MVPA bouts (β [95% CI] = -0.718 [-0.0025. -0.0003]). Additionally, leptin levels were lower in OW/OB preschoolers engaged in vigorous physical activity (VPA) (8000-9999 counts/min) for longer periods of time. CONCLUSION The results of this study indicate that OW/OB preschoolers have higher levels of oxidative stress biomarkers and pro-inflammatory cytokines compared to EU preschoolers. Moreover, VPA may exert antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects in OW/OB preschoolers.

Abstract
The abuse of Cannabis is a widespread issue in the Asir region. It has a lot of legal and occupational repercussions. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the health status of cannabis addicts at admission and after treatment using body mass index, glycemic status, liver function, renal function, and oxidative stress. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 120 participants. The study was conducted at Al Amal Hospital for Mental Health in Asir region of Saudi Arabia, with 100 hospitalized patients receiving addiction treatment and 20 healthy volunteers. The participants were divided into two groups: group I, the control group, and group II, the cannabis addicts. The socio-demographic data were gathered. The level of cannabis in the urine and the CWAS [Cannabis Withdrawal Assessment Scale] were determined. In addition, the Body Mass Index [BMI], vital signs [temperature, heart rate, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and respiratory rate], serum levels of albumin, total bilirubin, direct bilirubin, AST, ALT, and ALP, urea, creatinine, Thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances [TBARS], superoxide dismutase [SOD], reduced glutathione [GSH], and catalase [CAT] were analyzed on the first day of admission and after treatment. According to the results, there was no significant change in the body mass index. The vital signs in the cannabis user group were significantly lower than the corresponding admission values. Regarding renal function tests such as urea and creatinine, we found that after treatment, the mean urea and creatinine values in the cannabis user group did not differ significantly from the corresponding admission values. However, after treatment, the mean values of fasting blood glucose levels in the cannabis user group were significantly lower than at admission. Also, the mean values of liver function tests such as albumin, total bilirubin, direct bilirubin, AST, ALT, and ALP in the cannabis user group were significantly lower than the corresponding admission values after treatment. In assessing the antioxidant system, we found that the mean values of TBARS, SOD, GSH, and CAT in the cannabis user group did not differ significantly from the corresponding admission values after treatment. The current findings have revealed that cannabis addiction harms the various body systems and has significant implications for the addict's state of health. The values of oxidative stress biomarkers did not change in this study, but other measured parameters improved after treatment.

Abstract
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an acute respiratory disease caused by the new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) that has spread throughout the world causing millions of deaths. COVID-19 promotes excessive release of pro-inflammatory cytokines leading to acute lung injury and death. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) and oxidative stress (OS) may also play a role in the pathophysiology of COVID-19. The present study investigated levels of inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12) and OS biomarkers (MPO, SOD, CAT, GST enzymes and contents of GSH, TBARS and PC) in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection, which were correlated with disease severity. Patients with SARS significantly increased IL-1β levels, while IL-6 levels were elevated in both groups of SARS-CoV-2 positive patients. The most severe patients showed increased levels of IL-8 and IL-10, while subjects without SARS showed lower values. MPO activity were higher in both groups of SARS-CoV-2 positive patients, while SOD and CAT activity were decreased in both groups. Compared to controls, GGT was elevated only in the SARS patient group, while GST values were increased in the group of positive patients in SARS-CoV-2 without SARS and were decreased in patients with SARS. GSH and UA contents decreased in SARS-CoV-2 positive subjects, whereas TBARS and PC contents increased in both groups of SARS-CoV-2 positive patients, particularly in the SARS patient group. In addition, several important correlations were found between cytokines and the different OS parameters suggesting some inter-relationship in the complex antioxidant system of the patients. In general, patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection showed higher levels of OS biomarkers, and also elevated contents of IL-6 and IL-10, probably worsening the damage caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection. This damage may contribute to the severity of the disease and its complications, as well as a prognosis for SARS-CoV-2 patients.

Abstract
The aim of present study was to investigate the influence of conventional freezing (CF, -18 °C), low-temperaturefreezing (LF, -40 °C), and ultra-low-temperature freezing (ULF, -80 °C) on the quality, moisture distribution, microstructure, and flavor profile of hand-grabbed mutton (HGM) during frozen storage (0, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150 and 180 days). The TPC, TVB-N, and TBARS values increased significantly with prolonged storage, while the moisture content decreased (P < 0.05). Additionally, the concentrations of aldehydes, alcohols, ketones, acids, and alkenes decreased significantly as the storage duration increased. However, the concentrations of esters and heterocyclics increased (P < 0.05). Notably, at 30-180 days of storage, the TBARS and TVB-N values in ULF samples were significantly lower than those in CF and LF samples, while the moisture content was significantly higher (P < 0.05). Low field-nuclear magnetic resonance (LF-NMR) analysis showed that ULF decreased water migration and maintained the original texture characteristics of HGM during frozen storage. The ULF and LF groups had significantly higher levels of volatiles than the CF group (P < 0.05). The findings show that ULF, with its relatively rapid freezing rates, can still maintain the high quality of HGM after 180 days of frozen storage, contributing to quality control.

Abstract
Medications for treating bipolar disorder (BD) are limited and can cause side effects if used chronically. Therefore, efforts are being made to use new agents in the control and treatment of BD. Considering the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of dimethyl fumarate (DMF), this study was performed to examine the role of DMF on ketamine (KET)-induced manic-like behavior (MLB) in rats. Forty-eight rats were randomly divided into eight groups, including three groups of healthy rats: normal, lithium chloride (LiCl) (45 mg/kg, p.o.), and DMF (60 mg/kg, p.o.), and five groups of MLB rats: control, LiCl, and DMF (15, 30, and 60 mg/kg, p.o.), which received KET at a dose of 25 mg/kg, i.p. The levels of total sulfhydryl groups (total SH), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), nitric oxide (NO), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), as well as the activity of antioxidant enzymes including catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and hippocampus (HPC), were measured. DMF prevented hyperlocomotion (HLM) induced by KET. It was found that DMF could inhibit the increase in the levels of TBARS, NO, and TNF-α in the HPC and PFC of the brain. Furthermore, by examining the amount of total SH and the activity of SOD, GPx, and CAT, it was found that DMF could prevent the reduction of the level of each of them in the brain HPC and PFC. DMF pretreatment improved the symptoms of the KET model of mania by reducing HLM, oxidative stress, and modulating inflammation.

Abstract
We investigated a possible toxic effect induced by chronic exposure to free curcumin and curcumin-loaded nanocapsules in Drosophila melanogaster, enabling safe applications. Flies of both sexes were divided into groups: control group; free curcumin at concentrations of 10, 30, 100, 300, 900, and 3000 μM; curcumin-loaded nanocapsules at concentrations of 10, 30, 100, and 300 μM. Initially, the diet consumption test was evaluated in flies exposed to different concentrations. During the 10-day treatment, the flies were evaluated for percentage survival. After the treatment, behaviors (geotaxis negative and open field), acetylcholinesterase activity (AChE), and oxidative stress parameters (reactive species (RS) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) levels, Glutathione-S-transferase (GST), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) enzymes activity, erythroid-derived nuclear factor 2 (Nrf2) immunoreactivity, and cellular metabolic capacity, were assessed. No significant difference in diet consumption, indicating that the flies equally consumed the different concentrations of free curcumin and the curcumin-loaded nanocapsules. Was observed that free curcumin and curcumin-loaded nanocapsules increased survival, locomotor and exploratory performance, decreased AChE activity, RS and TBARS levels, increased GST, SOD and CAT activity, Nrf2 and viable cells compared to the control. The chronic treatment did not cause toxicity, suggesting that nanoencapsulation of curcumin could be explored.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bipolar disorder (BD) is a chronic, severe, and multifactorial psychiatric disorder. Although biological rhythms alterations, sodium potassium pump (Na+, K+-ATPase) changes, and oxidative stress appear to play a critical role in the etiology and pathophysiology of BD, the inter-connection between them has not been described. Therefore this study evaluated the association between biological rhythms, Na+, K+-ATPase, and oxidative stress parameters in BD patients and the preclinical paradoxical sleep deprivation model (PSD). METHODS A translational study was conducted, including a case-control protocol with 36 BD and 46 healthy controls (HC). Subjects completed the Biological Rhythm Interview of Assessment in Neuropsychiatry (BRIAN). In addition, Erythrocyte Na+, K+-ATPase activity, and oxidative and nitrosative stress markers were assessed (4-hydroxynonenal [4-HNE], 8-isoprostane [8-ISO], thiobarbituric acid reactive substances [TBARS], carbonyl, 3-nitrotyrosine [3-nitro]). In the preclinical protocol, the same biomarkers were evaluated in the frontal cortex, hippocampus, and striatum from mice submitted to the PSD. RESULTS BD patients had a significantly higher total score of BRIAN versus HCs. Additionally, individuals with BD showed decreased Na+, K+-ATPase activity and increased oxidative stress parameters compared to HC without psychiatric disorders. This difference was driven by actively depressed BD subjects. The mice submitted to the PSD also demonstrated decreased Na+, K+-ATPase activity and increased oxidative stress parameters. LIMITATIONS BRIAN biological underpinning is less well characterized; We did not control for medication status; Sample size is limited; PSD it is not a true model of BD. CONCLUSIONS The present study found a significant correlation between Na+, K+-ATPase and oxidative stress with changes in biological rhythms, reinforcing the importance of these parameters to BD.

Abstract
Background/Aim Oxidative stress is considered to have a significant role in the development of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) as well as many other diseases. Therefore, the purpose of the study is to evaluate the antioxidant system status at pre- and post-operative period in newborns with congenital heart disease (CHD) requiring operation. Materials and Methods Fifty CHD patients participated in this research. Superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) levels were studied in blood samples. RACHS-1 score, blood lactate levels, and hypoxic events were also recorded. Comparisons of antioxidant system parameters were conducted at pre- and post-operative periods and also between exitus and discharged groups. Results GPx activity and TBARS levels were significantly higher in the pre-operative period than post-operative period though the other antioxidant enzymes were not altered. In pre-operative period, GPx activity was low in addition to rarer hypoxic events in the discharged group. Also, a negative correlation was found between SOD and GPx activities in pre-operative period. Conclusion The results provide fundamental data showing the lowered GPx activity and TBARS levels considered as sensitive oxidative biomarkers after the operation. It was assumed that antioxidant system parameters might show changes after the operation, and GPx is prominent for resistance to hypoxic conditions. Post-operative reduction of GPx and TBARS levels is significant for evaluating the antioxidant system alterations after the operation. However, further investigations follow long-term duration for post-operative monitoring to estimate how antioxidant system status changes to improve the treatment of the health condition.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Nowadays, it is recognized the need for improved safety and efficacy protocols to evaluate the human stratum corneum (SC) and its interaction with topical and cosmetic formulations by minimally or non-invasive methodologies. The aim of our research work was to streamline the HPLC-TBARS-EVSC (high-performance liquid chromatography-thiobarbituric acid reactive substances-ex vivo stratum corneum) methodology, by exploring the results of a group of 18 subjects. METHODS The study included nine women and nine men aged between 19 and 57 years old with phototypes from II to V. Sites in the forearm of each volunteer were randomly delimited, and the SC was collected by tape stripping. HPLC was used to quantify the MDA-TBA2 (malondialdehyde-thiobarbituric acid) adduct from the tape-stripped SC, irradiated and not by an ultraviolet (UV) simulator chamber. RESULTS Observing the findings of our present investigation, and the statistical approach applied, the use of the ratio between the treatment site and control would be an adequate strategy to better discriminate and evaluate the results. Additionally, an optimal selection of the volunteers to respond specifically to the purpose of the ex vivo assay also can be considered advantageous. CONCLUSIONS It seemed that in future studies focusing on the impact of SC UV-induced lipid peroxidation, determined by the HPLC-TBARS-EVSC, the most suitable subjects are females aged less than 35 years old, with phototype II.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oxidative stress has been proven to play a role in numerous human and canine diseases. Among the biomarkers of oxidative stress, Thiobarbituric Acid Reactive Substances (TBARS) and Total Antioxidant Status (TAS) are two of the most widely used. Preanalytical factors are crucial for obtaining accurate results in these assays. Hemolysis, icterus and lipemia (HIL) are common sources of preanalytical errors in the laboratory; however, limited information is available regarding the considerations for canine specimens. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the potential interferences of HIL in the determination of TBARS and TAS in canine serum. METHODS Solutions of pooled canine serum samples were prepared by adding increasing concentrations of hemolysate, bilirubin and a synthetic lipid emulsion. TBARS and TAS were determined, and biases from the control value caused by the interfering substances were calculated. RESULTS Hemolysis, icterus and lipemia induced significant interferences on TBARS and TAS, albeit to varying degrees depending on the specific biomarker and interfering substance. TBARS appeared to be more susceptible to interferences in this study. Slight hemolysis, moderate icterus and slight lipemia caused notable deviations in TBARS values, surpassing the acceptable threshold for interference. TAS assay was also affected by HIL, although to a lesser extent compared to TBARS. Significant biases from TAS control value were observed when icterus was moderate, and when hemolysis and lipemia were more pronounced. CONCLUSIONS In light of our results, we conclude that hemolyzed, icteric and lipemic specimens are not suitable for TBARS and TAS determination in canine serum. Our findings hold considerable practical utility, as a simple visual inspection would be sufficient for identifying and excluding such specimens.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Endogenous estrogen is cardio-protective in healthy premenopausal women. Despite this favorable action of estrogen, animal models depict a detrimental effect of estradiol on vascular function in the presence of diabetes. The present study sought to determine the role of endogenous estradiol on endothelial function in women with type 1 diabetes. METHOD 32 women with type 1 diabetes (HbA1c = 8.6 ± 1.7%) and 25 apparently healthy women (HbA1c = 5.2 ± 0.3%) participated. Flow-mediated dilation (FMD), a bioassay of nitric-oxide bioavailability and endothelial function was performed during menses (M) and the late follicular (LF) phase of the menstrual cycle to represent low and high concentrations of estrogen, respectively. In addition, a venous blood sample was collected at each visit to determine circulating concentrations of estradiol, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), and nitrate/nitrite (NOx), biomarkers of oxidative stress and nitric oxide, respectively. Data were collected in (1) 9 additional women with type 1 diabetes using oral hormonal birth control (HBC) (HbA1c = 8.3 ± 2.1%) during the placebo pill week and second active pill week, and (2) a subgroup of 9 demographically matched women with type 1 diabetes not using HBC (HbA1c = 8.9 ± 2.1%). RESULTS Overall, estradiol was significantly increased during the LF phase compared to M in both type 1 diabetes (Δestradiol = 75 ± 86 pg/mL) and controls (Δestradiol = 71 ± 76 pg/mL); however, an increase in TBARS was only observed in patients with type 1 diabetes (ΔTBARS = 3 ± 13 µM) compared to controls (ΔTBARS = 0 ± 4 µM). FMD was similar (p = 0.406) between groups at M. In addition, FMD increased significantly from M to the LF phase in controls (p = 0.024), whereas a decrease was observed in type 1 diabetes. FMD was greater (p = 0.015) in patients using HBC compared to those not on HBC, independent of menstrual cycle phase. CONCLUSION Endogenous estradiol increases oxidative stress and contributes to endothelial dysfunction in women with diabetes. Additionally, HBC use appears to be beneficial to endothelial function in type 1 diabetes.

Abstract
Fish adapt to changing environments by maintaining homeostasis or making energy trade-offs that impact fitness. We investigated the effect of Zn on the fitness and physiology of Barbus meridionalis, a native cyprinid fish species, under two exposure scenarios. The Osor stream's mine-effluent reach represented long-term (chronic) exposure, while the upstream reach served as a control/acute exposure. Acute exposure involved exposing B. meridionalis to 1mg/L Zn for 96 h in the laboratory. We examined physiological traits (Standard metabolic rate SMR, Maximum metabolic rate MMR, Absolute Aerobic scope AAS, Critical swimming capacity Ucrit) and antioxidant system, AS (Superoxide dismutase, SOD; Catalase, CAT; Glutathione peroxidase, GPX; Glutathione-S-transferase, GST; Glutathione, GSH; Thiobarbaturic acid reactive substances, TBARS) biomarkers. The results indicated that Zn had no significant effect on osmoregulatory cost (SMR) in either exposure scenario but impaired energetically costly exercise (low MMR). AAS reduction in both exposure groups suggested compromised energy allocation for life-history traits, evidenced by decreased locomotor performance (Ucrit) after acute exposure. Tissue-specific and time-dependent responses were observed for AS biomarkers. The fish exhibited ineffective control of oxidative damage, as evidenced by high TBARS levels in the liver and gills, despite increased CAT and GSH in the liver under acute conditions. Our findings demonstrate differential responses at the subcellular level between the two exposure scenarios, while trait-based endpoints followed a similar pattern. This highlights the utility of a trait-based approach as a supplementary endpoint in biomonitoring studies, which provides insights into impacts on individual fitness and population demography.

Abstract
The study objective was to evaluate the effects of a phytogenic feed additive (PFA) on dry matter intake (DMI), average daily gain (ADG), inflammation, and oxidative stress markers of heifer calves exposed to a heat stress bout in the summer. A total of18 Holstein and 4 Jersey heifer calves (192 ± 5 kg of body weight at 162 ± 16 d of age) housed in indoor stalls were assigned to 1 of 2 dietary treatments (n = 11; 9 Holstein and 2 Jersey): (1) a basal total mixed ration (CTL), and (2) CTL top-dressed with 0.25 g/d of PFA. Following 7 d of acclimation, baseline measurements were made over 7 d under regular summer conditions [average temperature-humidity index (THI) = 79 from 0900 to 2000 h, and 75 from 2000 to 0900 h]. Calves were then subjected to a 7-d cyclic heat stress bout (HS) by turning on barn heaters and increasing the barn temperature to 33.0°C only during the daytime (the average THI = 85 from 0900 to 2000 h). The study continued for an extra 4-d period after HS ended (post-HS). The HS increased rectal temperature, skin temperature, and respiration rate from the baseline by 1.0°C, 4.0°C, and 49 breaths/min, respectively. The drinking water intake increased by 32% in response to HS, and calves continued to consume more water (44%) than the baseline consumption even after HS ended. The treatment × time interactions were not significant for feed intake, ADG, partial pressure of O2 in the blood, and blood concentrations of inflammation markers such as haptoglobin and lipopolysaccharide binding protein (LBP), and antioxidant markers such as protein carbonyl and thiobarbituric acid (TBARS). The PFA tended to increase daytime DMI (0.24 kg/d) compared with CTL throughout the experiment but did not affect ADG, which decreased from 1.12 kg/d to 0.26 kg/d in response to HS. Both DMI (13%) and ADG (85%) increased during post-HS relative to baseline, indicating compensatory performances that were not affected by the PFA. Serum haptoglobin and plasma LBP concentrations of PFA calves were 44% and 38% lower than that of CTL calves across all time points. The PFA decreased O2 pressure and tended to decrease protein carbonyl concentration in the blood across all time points. The PFA tended to decrease TBARS concentration on the first day of HS and increase and decrease the ratio of reduced to oxidized glutathione in the blood during the baseline and post-HS periods, respectively. Despite the lack of growth improvements, feeding PFA seems to increase O2 levels in the blood and alleviate oxidative stress and inflammation of heifer calve exposed to diurnal heat waves (~7 d) in the summer.

Abstract
Introduction Introduction: acrylamide is formed by the Maillard reaction and is found in many food products subjected to thermal processes, generating genotoxicity and DNA damage. Studies have reported that lactobacilli have the ability to generate compounds with antioxidant, antigenotoxic and antimutagenic activity, which is why the present work aims to evaluate the effect of Lactobacillus strains and their intra and extracellular extracts against genotoxicity and oxidative stress as caused by acrylamide. Methods: a strain of Lactobacillus casei Shirota and a strain of Lactobacillus reuteri NRRL B-14171 were used, both were cultured in MRS broth and subjected to mechanical and enzymatic treatments to obtain extra and intracellular extracts. Lymphocytes were cultured in RPMI medium. Lipid peroxidation was evaluated by TBARS and the antioxidant capacity was measured in the extra and intracellular extracts with the ABTS technique, also using a strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae RC 212 as a model. The reduction of lipid peroxidation in lymphocytes was measured by TBARS and the reduction of genotoxicity by reducing the formation of micronuclei in lymphocytes. Results: both strains evaluated, as well as their intra and extracellular extracts, showed the ability to counteract oxidative stress and genotoxicity caused by acrylamide. Conclusion: the results found suggest that the use of intra and extracellular extracts of both strains could be an alternative to reduce the effects of genotoxicity and oxidative stress caused by acrylamide without the need for a viable structure.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Modafinil has been proven to exert anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative and neuroprotective effects on numerous neurological disorders. However, its effects after traumatic brain injury (TBI) have not been yet explored. The aim of this study was to explore if Modafinil can attenuate the neuroinflammatory phase of TBI and clarify the possible underlying mechanisms. METHODS A weight drop model was used to induce experimental TBI on 30 Wistar albino rats. The treatment group received Modafinil on the day of the trauma and the following 5 days. Garcia Test was used to assess for neurological status and histopathological examination along with biochemical analysis of NSE, S-100B, CASP3, and TBARS levels were performed. RESULTS Rats treated with Modafinil after the trauma had a statistically significant higher Garcia Test Score (P<0.001) and presented with increased evidence of anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effect (P<0.05, P=0.005). Decreased levels of all biochemical parameters with NSE, CASP3, and TBARS having statistical significance was observed (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS The findings of this paper support the notion that a psychoactive drug Modafinil, traditionally used for sleep disorders and also known as a cognitive enhancer may prove beneficial in decreasing mortality and morbidity after TBI through anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative and neuroprotective effects.

Abstract
Although accumulating evidence suggests an interplay between child abuse and inflammatory processes and the pathophysiology of mental disorders, few studies have investigated the cellular mechanisms related to this matter. Furthermore, no studies to date have evaluated cytokine, oxidative stress, and DNA damage levels in drug-naïve panic disorder (PD) patients and their possible association with childhood trauma. The aim of the present study was to determine the levels of the proinflammatory interleukin (IL)-1B, the oxidative stress marker TBARS, and 8-hydroxy-2' -deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG; representing DNA damage) in drug-naïve PD patients compared to controls. Furthermore, this investigation aimed to determine whether early-life trauma could predict peripheral levels of the previously mentioned markers in unmedicated PD patients. This work showed that drug-naïve PD patients presented elevated levels of TBARS and IL-1B but not 8-OHdG compared to healthy controls. In addition, sexual abuse during childhood was associated with increased levels of IL-1B in PD patients. Our findings suggest that the microglial NLRP3 inflammasome complex might be activated in drug-naïve PD patients. This study is the first to associated sexual abuse with increased levels of IL-1B in drug-naïve PD patients and to demonstrate that this population presents high concentrations of oxidative stress and inflammation markers but not DNA damage markers when compared to healthy controls. Independent replication of these findings would support further clinical trials of inflammasome inhibitory drugs in PD patients, which could lead to effective novel treatments for people with PD and contribute to elucidating pathophysiological differences depending on trauma exposure in the immune disturbances accompanying PD.

Abstract
Harmful algae blooms have increased in frequency and geographic range in recent decades, and they produce toxins strains such as saxitoxins (STXs). they block voltage-gated sodium channels and can lead to several poisonings and the death of organisms that pose a significant risk to public and environmental health. The study of STXs toxicity has been carried out but little is known about the response of antioxidant enzymes activities to STXs in mice. The purpose of this study was to evaluate biochemical responses and oxidative stress induced by STXs extracted from Acanthocardia tuberculatum. To this end, daily, mice were treated orally for 7 days with sublethal concentrations (10 mg/100 g mouse). The animal's liver was assessed using biomarkers such as activities of catalase (CAT), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) and succinate dehydrogenase (SDH). In the blood, plasmatic markers were analysed as glutamic oxalic transaminase (GOT), glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT), creatinine phosphokinase (CPK), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), urea and creatinine. Globally, test toxicity test showed a significant decrease in the weight at 10 mg /100 g mouse, and the results showed an increase of GPT, GOT, CPK, LDH, CAT and TBARS activities and the inhibitory effect of GAPDH activities but creatinine, urea and SDH activities showed no significative difference from the control. We concluded that STXs induce oxidative stress breaking in mice the balance of the defence system and causing oxidations reactions. Moreover, STXs affect energy metabolism in mice, however, renal function in mice is not affected by exposure to STXs.

Abstract
β-carotene-loaded nanoparticles improves absorption by increasing bioavailability. The Drosophila melanogaster model of Parkinson's disease must be helpful in investigating potential neuroprotective effects. Four groups of four-day-old flies were exposed to: (1) control; (2) diet containing rotenone (500 μM); (3) β-carotene-loaded nanoparticles (20 μM); (4) β-carotene-loaded nanoparticles and rotenone for 7 days. Then, the percentage of survival, geotaxis tests, open field, aversive phototaxis and food consumption were evaluated. At the end of the behaviors, the analyses of the levels of reactive species (ROS), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity was carried out, as well as an evaluation of the levels of dopamine and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity, in the head of flies. Nanoparticles loaded with β-carotene were able to improve motor function, memory, survival and also restored the oxidative stress indicators (CAT, SOD, ROS and TBARS), dopamine levels, AChE activity after exposure to rotenone. Overall, nanoparticles loaded with β-carotene showed significant neuroprotective effect against damage induced by the Parkinson-like disease model, emerging as a possible treatment. Overall, β-carotene-loaded nanoparticles presented significant neuroprotective effect against damage induced by model of Parkinson-like disease, emerging as a possible treatment.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Myrcia multiflora (Lam) DC. is a medicinal plant used in folk medicine for diabetes control, mainly in the Brazilian Amazon. The leaves of this species has already demonstrated antidiabetic properties; however, in mice with type 2 diabetes (DM2), the cumulative effect of the consumption of the dry extract of M. multiflora leaves (Mm) has not yet been reported. AIM OF THE STUDY To investigate the effect of the dry extract obtained from the infusion of the dried leaves of M. multiflora on the blood glucose levels of diabetic mice. MATERIALS AND METHODS DM2 was induced in Swiss male mice by a single intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin [150 mg/kg body weight (bw)]. The animals were divided into two control groups (healthy and diabetic without treatment) and three sample groups that received Mm (25 and 50 mg/kg bw) and acarbose (200 mg/kg bw) by gavage once daily for 28 days (D28). Additionally, biochemical parameters, thiobarbituric acid reactive species (TBARS) levels in the liver, and histopathological analyses of the kidneys and liver were performed. RESULTS On the seventh day of treatment, a 74.7% reduction in glucose levels were observed in the group of diabetic animals treated with Mm (50 mg/kg bw) when compared to the beginning of the treatment. At D28, the hypoglycemic effect was maintained. The results of the biochemical and histopathological parameters and the TBARS levels suggest that this dry extract exerts nephro- and hepatoprotective effects. CONCLUSIONS The findings demonstrate the potential that this extract has to inhibit the α-glucosidase enzyme, and it acts similarly to the positive control acarbose. Furthermore, this extract is nephro- and hepatoprotective. Therefore, this dry extract has the potential to be an adjuvant for DM2, which corroborates its use in folk medicine.

Abstract
Sex-related cardiovascular differences were observed in humans as well as in experimental animals. Our previous study demonstrated a marked sexual dimorphism in blood pressure (BP) of 9-month-old heterozygous transgenic Ren 2 rats (TGR), in which mouse Ren-2 renin gene was inserted into the genome of normotensive Hannover Sprague-Dawley rats (HanSD). We found significantly elevated BP only in male TGR, whereas BP of TGR females was similar to that of HanSD females. The aim of our present study was to compare BP of 3- and 6-month-old heterozygous TGR with age- and sex-matched HanSD under the same conditions as we measured in 9-month-old rats. We also monitored the amount of oxidative stress marker, thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS), and a main intracellular antioxidant, reduced glutathione in the heart, kidneys and liver. We also measured plasma triglycerides and cholesterol levels. We found an increased mean arterial pressure in both female and male 3-month-old TGR (172±17 vs. 187±4 mm Hg, respectively) compared to HanSD (115±5 vs. 133±3 mm Hg, respectively) but there was a marked sexual dimorphism of 6 month-old TGR where only males were hypertensive (145±5 mm Hg) while females became normotensive (123±7 mm Hg). We did not find any relationship between BP values and concentrations of TBARS or glutathione or plasma lipid levels. Our results demonstrated that 6-month-old TGR exhibited a marked sexual BP dimorphism, which was not dependent on the abnormalities in oxidative stress or cholesterol metabolism.

Abstract
Ciprofloxacin (CPX), the most commonly used fluoroquinolone antibiotic, and microplastics (MPs) are two classes of emerging contaminants with severe adverse impacts on aquatic organisms. Previous studies suggest that both CPX and MPs induce deleterious changes in exposed aquatic biota, but the characterization of a chronic and combined ecotoxicological response is not well known, especially in organisms from estuarine ecosystems. Thus, in this study, we investigated the behavioral and biochemical effects of environmentally relevant levels of CPX alone and in combination with polyethylene terephthalate (PET) microplastics over 28 days of exposure, using the polychaete Hediste diversicolor as a model. In addition to behavioral parameters, different biochemical endpoints were also evaluated, namely the levels of metabolic enzymes of phase I (7-ethoxy-resorufin-O-deethylase, EROD), and phase II (glutathione-S-transferase, GSTs), antioxidant defense (catalase, CAT; glutathione peroxidase, GPx; superoxide dismutase, SOD), oxidative damage (lipid peroxidation, by means of levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances [TBARS]) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE). Chronic exposure to ciprofloxacin caused a decrease in burrowing time and a significant increase in SOD activity. In animals exposed to the combination of CPX and PET MPs, effects on behavioral traits were also observed, with higher concentrations of MPs leading to a marked delay in the animals' burrowing time. In addition, these animals showed changes in their antioxidant defenses, namely, a significant increase in SOD activity, while GPx activity was severely compromised. For none of the experimental groups, significant alterations were observed in the metabolic enzymes, TBARS or AChE. These findings provide the first insights into the responses of H. diversicolor when exposed to the combination of CPX and PET MPs, highlighting that, although the here studied conditions, there was no evidence of oxidative damage or neurotoxicity, these organisms are not risk-free in co-exposure scenarios, even at low environmental relevant concentrations.

Abstract
BackgroundBiomarkers of oxidation-reduction (redox) homeostasis are commonly measured in human blood to assess whether certain stimuli (e.g., high-glucose ingestion or acute exercise) lead to a state of oxidative distress (detrimental to health) or oxidative eustress (beneficial to health). Emerging research indicates that redox responses are likely to be highly individualized, yet few studies report individual responses. Furthermore, the effects of complex redox stimuli (e.g., high-glucose-ingestion after exercise) on redox homeostasis remains unclear. We investigated the effect of acute exercise (oxidative eustress), high-glucose ingestion (oxidative distress), and high-glucose ingestion after exercise (both oxidative eu/distress), on commonly measured redox biomarkers in serum/plasma.MethodsIn a randomized crossover fashion, eight healthy men (age: 28 ± 4 years; BMI: 24.5 ± 1.5 kg/m2 [mean ± SD]) completed two separate testing conditions; 1) consumption of a high-glucose mixed-nutrient meal (45% carbohydrate [1.1 g glucose.kg-1], 20% protein, and 35% fat) at rest (control trial), and 2) consumption of the same meal 3 h and 24 h after 1 h of moderate-intensity cycling exercise (exercise trial). Plasma and serum were analyzed for an array of commonly studied redox biomarkers.ResultsOxidative stress and antioxidant defense markers (hydrogen peroxide, 8-isoprostanes, catalase, superoxide dismutase, and nitrate levels) increased immediately after exercise (p < 0.05), whereas nitric oxide activity and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) remained similar to baseline (p > 0.118). Nitric oxide activity and nitrate levels decreased at 3 h post-exercise compared to pre-exercise baseline levels. Depending on when the high-glucose mixed nutrient meal was ingested and the postprandial timepoint investigated, oxidative stress and antioxidant defense biomarkers either increased (hydrogen peroxide, TBARS, and superoxide dismutase), decreased (hydrogen peroxide, 8-isoprostanes, superoxide dismutase, nitric oxide activity, nitrate, and nitrite), or remained similar to pre-meal baseline levels (hydrogen peroxide, 8-isoprostanes, TBARS, catalase, superoxide dismutase and nitrite). Redox responses exhibited large inter-individual variability in the magnitude and/or direction of responses.ConclusionFindings highlight the necessity to interpret redox biomarkers in the context of the individual, biomarker measured, and stimuli observed. Individual redox responsiveness may be of physiological relevance and should be explored as a potential means to inform personalized redox intervention.

Abstract
Using cryopreservation techniques can increase the effectiveness of reproducing cultured fish species by ensuring a dependable supply of sperm, although the quality of the sperm could be impacted by the procedures involved. The goal of this study was to investigate the effect of purified seminal plasma transferrin (Tf), bovine serum albumin (BSA), and antifreeze protein (AFP) types I and III at 1 µg mL-1 on relevant characteristics of cryopreserved sperm from common carp Cyprinus carpio. We compared oxidative stress indices, antioxidant activity, and DNA fragmentation of fresh sperm to that frozen with extender only or with Tf, BSA, or AFP types I and III. Fresh sperm had significantly lower levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) compared to samples that underwent cryopreservation without protein treatment, which resulted in 0.54 ± 0.06 nmol/108 cells of TBARS. Carbonyl derivatives of proteins (CP) decreased significantly (ANOVA; P > 0.05) in carp sperm with addition of Tf, AFPI, and AFPIII. Significant differences in superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione reductase (GR), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity were seen in sperm supplemented with Tf, BSA, AFPI, and AFPIII from those without. Significantly less DNA damage, expressed as percent tail DNA (11.56 ± 1.34) and olive tail moment (0.59 ± 0.13), was recorded in samples cryopreserved with Tf. The findings indicated that addition of Tf, BSA, AFPI, or AFPIII to cryopreservation medium is beneficial to sperm preservation. The mechanisms through which these proteins act positively on sperm need to be further investigated.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study examined associations between scores of depression (DEPs), thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase activity (CAT) in master athletes and untrained controls. METHODS Participants were master sprinters (MS, n = 24; 50.31 ± 6.34 year), endurance runners (ER, n = 11; 51.35 ± 9.12 year), untrained middle-aged (CO, n = 13; 47.21 ± 8.61 year), and young untrained (YU, n = 15; 23.70 ± 4.02 year). CAT, SOD, and TBARS were measured in plasma using commercial kits. DEPs were measured by the Beck Depression Inventory-II. An ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis, Pearson's, and Spearman's correlations were applied, with a significance level of p ≤ 0.05. RESULTS The CATs of MS and YU [760.4 U·μL 1 ± 170.1 U·μL 1 and 729.9 U·μL 1 ± 186.9 U·μL 1] were higher than CO and ER. The SOD levels in the YU and ER [84.20 U·mL-1 ± 8.52 U·mL-1 and 78.24 U·mL-1 ± 6.59 U·mL-1 (p < 0.0001)] were higher than CO and MS. The TBARS in CO [11.97 nmol·L-1 ± 2.35 nmol·L-1 (p < 0.0001)] was higher than in YU, MS and ER. MS had lower DEPs compared to the YU [3.60 ± 3.66 vs. 12.27 ± 9.27 (p = 0.0002)]. A negative correlation was found between CAT and DEPs for master athletes [r = -0.3921 (p = 0.0240)] and a weak correlation [r = -0.3694 (p = 0.0344)] was found between DEPs and the CAT/TBARS ratio. CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, the training model of master sprinters may be an effective strategy for increasing CAT and reducing DEPs.

Abstract
RATIONALE Optimal systemic oxygenation targets in pediatric critical illness are unknown. A U-shaped relationship exists between blood oxygen levels and PICU mortality. Redox stress or iatrogenic injury from intensive treatments are potential mechanisms of harm from hyperoxia. OBJECTIVES To measure biomarkers of oxidative status in children admitted to PICU and randomized to conservative (oxygen-hemoglobin saturation [Sp o2 ] 88-92%) versus liberal (Sp o2 > 94%) peripheral oxygenation targets. DESIGN Mechanistic substudy nested within the Oxygen in PICU (Oxy-PICU) pilot randomized feasibility clinical trial ( ClinicalTrials.gov : NCT03040570). SETTING Three U.K. mixed medical and surgical PICUs in university hospitals. PATIENTS Seventy-five eligible patients randomized to the Oxy-PICU randomized feasibility clinical trial. INTERVENTIONS Randomization to a conservative (Sp o2 88-92%) versus liberal (Sp o2 > 94%) peripheral oxygenation target. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS Blood and urine samples were collected at two timepoints: less than 24 hours and up to 72 hours from randomization in trial participants (March 2017 to July 2017). Plasma was analyzed for markers of ischemic/oxidative response, namely thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS; lipid peroxidation marker) and ischemia-modified albumin (protein oxidation marker). Total urinary nitrate/nitrite was measured as a marker of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS). Blood hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1a messenger RNA (mRNA) expression (hypoxia response gene) was measured by reverse transcription- polymerase chain reaction. Total urinary nitrate/nitrite levels were greater in the liberal compared with conservative oxygenation group at 72 hours (median difference 32.6 μmol/mmol of creatinine [95% CI 13.7-93.6]; p < 0.002, Mann-Whitney test). HIF-1a mRNA expression was increased in the conservative group compared with liberal in less than 24-hour samples (6.0-fold [95% CI 1.3-24.0]; p = 0.032). There were no significant differences in TBARS or ischemia-modified albumin. CONCLUSIONS On comparing liberal with conservative oxygenation targets, we show, first, significant redox response (increase in urinary markers of RONS), but no changes in markers of lipid or protein oxidation. We also show what appears to be an early hypoxic response (increase in HIF-1a gene expression) in subjects exposed to conservative rather than liberal oxygenation targets.

Abstract
Nanoplastics alter the adverse impacts of hazardous contaminants such as heavy metals by changing their adsorption and accumulation. Few findings are available on the interaction between nanoplastic and heavy metals in plants. However, there is no report on the mechanisms for removing metal stress-mediated oxidative damage by the combination treatments of nanoplastics. To address this lack of information, polystyrene nanoplastic (PS, 100 mg L-1) and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA, 100 mg L-1) were hydroponically applied to Lemna minor exposed to arsenate (As, 100 μM) for 7 days. PS or PMMA caused a reduction in the contents of N, P, K, Ca, Mg and Mn, but the improved contents were detected in the presence of PS or PMMA plus As stress. The hormone contents (auxin, gibberellic acid, cytokinin, salicylic acid and jasmonic acid) reduced by stress were re-arranged through PS or PMMA applications. Based on chlorophyll efficiency, fluorescence kinetics and performance of PSII, the impaired photosynthesis by As stress was improved via PS or PMMA applications. This alleviation did not continue under the combined form of PS and PMMA in As-applied plants. All analyzed antioxidant activity (superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POX), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), glutathione reductase (GR), glutathione S-transferase (GST), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), monodehydroascorbate reductase (MDHAR) and dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR)) decreased or unchanged under As, PS or PMMA. Due to the inactivation of the defense system, L. minor had high levels of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), showing lipid peroxidation. After As toxicity, induvial applications of PS or PMMA indicated the activated enzyme capacity (SOD, POX, GST and GPX) and upregulated AsA/DHA, GSH/GSSG and redox state of GSH, which facilitated the removal of radical accumulation. The efficiency of the antioxidant system in As + PS + PMMA-applied L. minor was not enough to remove damage induced by As stress; hereby, TBARS and H2O2 contents were similar to the As-treated group. Our findings from alone or combined application of PS and PMMA provide new information to advance the tolerance mechanism against As exposure in L. minor.

Abstract
Antioxidant activity toward H2O2, anion radical superoxide, hydroxyl and DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) of two manganese complexes [Mn(III)(bpa)2]Cl.H2O (1) and [(Cl)Mn(μ-hbpclnol)(μ-bpclnol)Mn](ClO4).3H2O (2) (hbpa = (2-hydroxybenzyl-2-pyridylmethyl)amine and h2bpclnol = (N-(2-hydroxybenzyl)-N-(2-pyridylmethyl)[(3-chloro)(2-hydroxy)]propylamine) are presented. X-ray diffraction studies were performed for complex (1). Both complexes presented similar or better activities than reference complex [Mn(salen)Cl], when the interaction between them and ROS (H2O2, O2•- and •OH), was monitored, by EPR (Electron Paramagnetic Resonance), in PBS, DMSO and water. The antioxidant activity rank of complexes toward •OH, generated by Fenton reaction and monitored by EPR, is (2) > (1) > [Mn(salen)Cl], in water (0.1% of DMSO for each complex), with the values of the IC50 of 7.2 (±1.6), 15.5 (±1.8) and 29.1 (±2.01) μM respectively. EPR data presented herein suggest that complex (2) presents the better scavenging activity toward hydroxyl, being in good agreement with TBARS assay results, in which complex (2) presented the best inhibitory activity toward lipid peroxidation, employing Swiss mice liver homogenate tissue model. IC50 values obtained from the interaction between these complexes and hydroxyl, using TBARS method, were: 0.88 (± 0.029); 0.73 (± 0.01) and 42.7 (± 3.5) nM, respectively for (1), (2) and [Mn(salen)Cl]. Complexes (1) and (2) are regulating the lipid homeostasis, protecting the tissue from the lipid peroxidation, in nanomolar scale, motivating in vivo studies. Redox properties and radical scavenging activity of complexes toward DPPH are non-linear and solvent dependent. Furthermore, the monitoring of antioxidant activity probed by EPR could be a fair and appropriate study to guide more advanced investigations.

Abstract
The effect of commercial plant extracts (grape, rosemary, pomegranate, green tea, and mate) at 0.125, 0.25, 0.50, and 1 % w/w concentrations as a natural antioxidant in mechanically deboned poultry meat (MDPM) was evaluated. The extracts were characterized for the content of phenolic compounds, total flavonoids, and antioxidant activity. Lipid oxidation (TBARS), instrumental color (L*, a*, and b* values), and pH of MDPM were evaluated on days 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 of chilled storage (2 °C). All commercial extracts showed antioxidant activity in the following order: grape > green tea > mate > rosemary > pomegranate, the latter addition promoted the highest TBARS values in MDPM during storage. The levels of 0.5, 0.25, and 0.125 % of grape, green tea, mate, and rosemary extracts showed the same positive effect in decelerating lipid oxidation in MDPM. The pH values of the MDPM decreased with increasing the extract concentrations. The commercial extracts led to a decrease in L* and b* values, and the grape extract provided the highest a* values in MDPM during chilled storage. The addition of commercial plant-derived extracts has proven to be an effective natural antioxidant to extend the shelf life of MDPM and consequently healthier and quality meat products can be produced.

Abstract
Liposomes are among the most studied nanostructures. They are effective carriers of active substances both in the clinical field, such as delivering genes and drugs, and in the food industry, such as promoting the controlled release of bioactive substances, including food preservatives. However, toxicological screenings must be performed to ensure the safety of nanoformulations. In this study, the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans was used as an alternative model to investigate the potential in vivo toxicity of nanoliposomes encapsulating the antimicrobial peptide nisin. The effects of liposomes containing nisin, control liposomes, and free nisin were evaluated through the survival rate, lethal dose (LD50), nematode development rate, and oxidative stress status by performing mutant strain, TBARS, and ROS analyses. Due to its low toxicity, it was not possible to experimentally determine the LD50 of liposomes. The survival rates of control liposomes and nisin-loaded liposomes were 94.3 and 73.6%, respectively. The LD50 of free nisin was calculated as 0.239 mg mL-1. Free nisin at a concentration of 0.2 mg mL-1 significantly affected the development of C. elegans, which was 25% smaller than the control and liposome-treated samples. A significant increase in ROS levels was observed after exposure to the highest concentrations of liposomes and free nisin, coinciding with a significant increase in catalase levels. The treatments induced lipid peroxidation as evaluated by TBARS assay. Liposome encapsulation reduces the deleterious effect on C. elegans and can be considered a nontoxic delivery system for nisin.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim: To investigate the impact of lymphogranulomatosis (LGM) and periodontal disease on salivary lipid peroxidation and enzymatic antioxidants` levels in children. PATIENTS AND METHODS Materials and methods: 45 children aged 6-16 years with LGM were examined before hematologic therapy (group LGM 1), after therapy (group LGM 2), and at the remission (group LGM 3). The control group included 70 healthy children. Periodontal state of children, saliva thiobarbituric acid reacting substances (TBARS), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase were examined. RESULTS Results: 6-11 years old children from LGM 1 group showed a higher frequency of periodontal disease (50,0%), as well as 12-15 year olds (80,8%) compared to healthy children (17,4% and 42,8% accordingly, p<0,05). TBARS levels were higher in LGM 1-3 groups of children with periodontal disease (9,79, 12,3 and 12,6 umol/l, р<0,01) compared to counterparts without it (8,01, 10,1 and 11,6 umol/l, р<0,01) and healthy children with periodontal disease (7,9 umol/l, р<0,01). SOD activity was higher in LGM 1-3 groups of children with periodontal disease (-0,075, -0,086, -0,074 units) compared to children without it (-0,048, -0,059, -0,04 units, р<0,01) and healthy children with periodontal disease (-0,04 units, р<0,01). Catalase activity was lower in LGM 1-3 groups of children with periodontal disease (6,72, 5,2 and 6,7 units) compared to counterparts without it (7,3, 3,7 and 4,7 units, р<0,01) and healthy children with periodontal disease (7,1 units, р<0,01). CONCLUSION Conclusions: Children with periodontal disease related to LGM had higher TBARS levels, SOD activity and lower catalase activity in saliva. Both LGM and periodontal disease altered lipid peroxidation and antioxidant protection in saliva of children.

Abstract
Living organisms are exposed to a wide range of substances - internal and external - which act like reactive oxygen species (ROS). Oxidative damage accurs when the balance between ROS and antioxidant defenses is altered. Urbanization and parasite infection are both important sources of ROS with different harmful effects on wildlife health, but the potential synergies between both factors are poorly known. Here, we analyse the oxidative stress of wild juvenile male house sparrows (Passer domesticus) along an urbanization gradient in relation to the infection status by three common blood parasites (Plasmodium, Haemoproteus and Leucocytozoon) and bird body condition. We analysed samples from 688 birds captured at 45 localities from southern Spain grouped into triplets including an urban, a rural and a natural habitat, with 15 localities per habitat type. We measured i) thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) levels as indicator of the oxidative damage to lipids, and the activity of three antioxidant enzymes ii) glutathione peroxidase (GPx), iii) superoxide dismutase (SOD) and iv) glutathione reductase (GR) as indicators of bird's antioxidant capacity. Birds infected with Haemoproteus and urban birds showed significantly and marginally higher levels of TBARS than uninfected and rural birds, respectively. The relationship between TBARS and body condition is different regarding the infection status (significative) and habitat (marginally significant) being negative for Haemoproteus infected and urban birds but positive for uninfected and non-urban birds. The antioxidant activity was significantly lower in Plasmodium infected birds but marginally higher in Leucocytozoon infected birds than in uninfected ones. Individuals with higher body condition had higher GPx and SOD activity in relation to a lower GR activity. Overall, these results suggest that blood parasites infections and urbanization affect the oxidative status of wild birds and highlight the role of bird's body condition on the regulation of the oxidative stress status.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The consumption of coffee has been associated with beneficial effects when it comes to Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, to the best of our knowledge, there are no studies on Conilon coffee consumption in elderly people with AD. OBJECTIVE Evaluate the effects of Conilon coffee consumption in elderly with AD. METHODS The study was carried out with 9 participants who consumed a minimum of 2 cups (200 mL cup) of Conilon coffee per day for 90 days. Cognitive assessment was done before (T0) and after 90 days (T90). Blood analysis was conducted at T0 and T90, as well as the assessment of advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP) and thiobarbituric acid reactive species (TBARS). The levels of chlorogenic acids and caffeine in the coffee beverage were quantified by liquid chromatography. RESULTS During the treatment, the participants consumed at least 550 mg and 540 mg of CGAs and caffeine, respectively. A significant improvement in cognition between T0 and T90 was observed as per MMSE, CTP, and clock drawing tests. Furthermore, there was a significant reduction in AOPP (37%) and TBARS (60%), indicating a reduction in oxidative stress. The consumption of the coffee did not significantly alter any blood parameter, which confirms the safety of the coffee treatment during the 90 days. CONCLUSIONS Our study demonstrated for the first time that regular consumption of coffee with high amounts of CGAs and caffeine improves cognitive functions and reduces oxidative stress, without altering blood parameters that indicate possible signs of toxicity in classical target organs.

Abstract
Soils contaminated with rare earth elements (REEs) can damage agriculture by causing physiological disorders in plants which are evaluated as the main connection of the human food chain. A biphasic dose response with excitatory responses to low concentrations and inhibitory/harmful responses to high concentrations has been defined as hormesis. However, not much is clear about the ecological effects and potential risks of REEs to plants. For this purpose, here we showed the impacts of different concentrations of nano terbium (Tb) applications (5-10-25-50-100-250-500 mg L-1) on the accumulation of endogeneous certain ions and hormones, chlorophyll fluoresence, photochemical reaction capacity and antioxidant activity in duckweed (Lemna minor). Tb concentrations less than 100 mg L-1 increased the contents of nitrogen (N), phosphate (P), potassium (K+), calcium (Ca2+), magnesium (Mg2+), manganese (Mn2+) and iron (Fe2+). Chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm and Fv/Fo) was suppressed under 250-500 mg L-1 Tb. In addition, Tb toxicity affected the trapped energy adversely by the active reaction center of photosystem II (PSII) and led to accumulation of inactive reaction centers, thus lowering the detected level of electron transport from photosystem II (PSII) to photosystem I (PSI). On the other hand, 5-100 mg L-1 Tb enhanced the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POX), NADPH oxidase (NOX), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), glutathione reductase (GR), monodehydroascorbate reductase (MDHAR), dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR) and glutathione S-transferase (GST). Tb (5-50 mg L-1) supported the maintenance of cellular redox status by promoting antioxidant pathways involved in the ascorbate-glutathione (AsA-GSH) cycle. In addition to the antioxidant system, the contents of some hormones such as indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), gibberellic acid (GA), cytokinin (CK) and salicylic acid (SA) were also induced in the presence of 5-100 mg L-1 Tb. In addition, the levels of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and lipid peroxidation (TBARS) were controlled through ascorbate (AsA) regeneration and effective hormonal modulation in L. minor. However, this induction in the antioxidant system and phytohormone contents could not be resumed after applications higher than 250 mg L-1 Tb. TBARS and H2O2, which indicate the level of lipid peroxidation, increased. The results in this study showed that Tb at appropriate concentrations has great potential to confer tolerance of duckweed by supporting the antioxidant system, protecting the biochemical reactions of photosystems and improving hormonal regulation.
