The multiple mediating effects of social connectedness and self-care confidence on the relationship between subjective social status and emotional well-being in patients with heart failure: a cross-sectional study

Effects of Socioeconomic Status on the Health of Menopausal Mothers in Multicultural Families in Korea: A Test of the Reserve Capacity Model

Based on the Reserve Capacity Model, this study examined the effect of SES(socioeconomic status) on health status on the health status of menopausal mothers of multicultural families, focusing on mediating effects of self-esteem, assimilation, integration, separation, marginalization, and daily life stress. This is a cross-sectional survey study with secondary analysis of national data on 683 perimenopausal mothers in multicultural families from the 9th Multicultural Adolescents Panel Study surveyed by the Korea Youth Policy Institute in 2019. The subjects were women aged 45-55 years and foreign nationals by origin. For path analysis using observed variables, the Mplus 8.4 program was used. Self-esteem and integration were positively related to health status and negatively related to marginalization and daily life stress. Health status was higher when self-esteem and integration were high, and work-life stress and marginalization were low. To improve the perceived health status of menopausal women in multicultural families, rather than simply focusing on SES through support for employment status and income, it is necessary to improve self-esteem by resolving difficulties caused by SES and cultural adaptation to relieve stress in daily life and to provide multidimensional coping resources that can improve health by lowering risk.

Trajectories of Learned Helplessness in Maintenance Haemodialysis Patients and Their Predictive Effects on Self-Management: A Latent Growth Mixture Modeling Approach

Background

Learned helplessness (LH) is an essential psychological factor influencing maintenance haemodialysis (MHD) patients' health behaviour and is closely related to prognosis of the disease. This study aimed to identify potential trajectories of LH in MHD patients and assess their predictive role in self-management.

Methods

This study was conducted in strict compliance with national laws, the Declaration of Istanbul, and the Declaration of Helsinki. A total of 347 MHD patients at a blood purification centre in Hunan Province, China, were selected as the study population. Four longitudinal surveys (baseline and second/fourth/sixth month after baseline) were conducted using the General Information Questionnaire for MHD patients, the Chinese version of the Learned Helplessness Scale for MHD patients, and the Self-Management Scale for Haemodialysis. Latent growth mixture model (LGMM) analysis was used to identify LH trajectories, and their predictors were analysed using multinomial logistic regression. The predictive role of LH trajectory on self-management was analysed using linear regression.

Results

This study identified three LH trajectories in MHD patients, named the "high-decreasing group" (57.9%), "low-increasing group" (21.3%), and "low-stability group" (20.7%). The results of the univariate analysis showed that sex (χ²=33.777, P < 0.001), age (χ²=10.605, P<0.05), and subjective social status (SSS) (χ²=12.43, P<0.01) were associated with LH trajectory classes. Multinomial logistic regression further demonstrated that gender, age, and SSS were predictors of different LH trajectories. The intercept and slope of the overall LH trajectory were negatively correlated with self-management (β=-0.273, P<0.001; β=-0.234, P<0.01).

Conclusion

MHD patients show three different LH trajectories. The initial level and developmental rate of LH can negatively predict future self-management. It is necessary to screen MHD patients' LH and develop targeted interventions for them with different LH trajectories at specific stages.

Clinical nursing visual health education pathway for patients with perianal abscess†

Objective: To investigate the effect of a clinical nursing pathway and visual health education on patients with perianal abscesses was the objective of this study.

Methods: Eighty patients with perianal abscesses undergoing in-patient surgical treatment (blinded for review) between December 2019 and November 2020 were divided randomly and evenly into a control group and an experimental group. The control group received routine nursing care, and the experimental group received visual health education nursing care. Digital pain scores, patient satisfaction scores, nursing quality scores, and scores measuring knowledge of perianal abscess disease for the two groups before and after nursing care were compared and analyzed.

Results: The experimental group had visual analog scale (VAS) scores significantly lower than those of the control group (P < 0.05). For total nursing satisfaction, the experimental group demonstrated a higher satisfaction rate (P < 0.05). Clinical nursing quality scores were significantly higher in the experimental group than those in the control group (P < 0.05). The perianal abscess disease-related knowledge scores after intervention were significantly higher in the experimental group than those in the control group (P < 0.01).

Conclusions: Visual health education nursing can help patients better understand and deal with perianal abscess disease.

Sustainable Community Transformation and Community Integration of Agricultural Transfer Population—A Case Study from China

Urban-rural integrated communities (URICs) are transitional areas for agricultural transfer population (ATP) in the process of urbanization in China. In the current urban renewal context, the demolition and renovation of communities often result in ATP living in a precarious situation and being marginalized in the city. Sustainable urban renewal should change this situation, take the transformation of URICs as a breakthrough, and promote the urban integration of the ATP. Based on the survey of the National Health Commission of China in 2017, this paper investigates the effects of community participation and community identity on community integration, using the ordered probit model with data of the ATP living in URICs. The results show that both community identity and community participation positively influence community integration, and there are intergenerational differences. The mediating effect test shows that community identity plays a mediating role in the process of community participation, influencing community integration. The findings of the study provide possible ideas for the practical promotion of community integration and urban integration of the ATP, facilitate the implementation of sustainable urban regeneration to reduce the costs of citizenship, and maximize the benefits of the cumulative effects of urbanization for all segments of the population.

Factors Affecting Depression in Middle-Aged and Elderly Men Living Alone: A Cross-Sectional Path Analysis Model

The main objectives of this cross-sectional study were to determine the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and depression and to estimate the mediating effects of social network satisfaction, self-esteem, and perceived health status among middle-aged and elderly men living alone, based on the reserve capacity model. Secondary data from a sample of 394 middle-aged and elderly men aged 45 years or older from the 15th Korea Welfare Panel Study (KOWEPS) were analyzed. A path analysis model was constructed to evaluate the relationship among SES, social network satisfaction, self-esteem, perceived health status, and depression. The path analysis exhibited significant direct effects of social network satisfaction, self-esteem, and perceived health status on depression and significant indirect effects of SES on depression. There was no direct effect of SES on depression. Social network satisfaction and self-esteem had significant mediating effects of SES on depression. Among middle-aged and elderly men, intrapersonal reserves, which are psychosocial factors including social network satisfaction, self-esteem, and perceived health status, showed more association with depression than tangible reserves such as SES. This suggests that interventions promoting self-esteem and perceived health status could prevent depression.
