Ethyl Formate Fumigation of Dry and Semidry Date Fruits: Experimental Kinetics, Modeling, and Lethal Effect on Carob Moth

Photo-thermal Cooperative Carbonylation of Ethanol with CO2 on Cu2 O-SrTiCuO3-x

Carbonylation of ethanol with CO2 as carbonyl source into value-added esters is of considerable significance and interest, while remains of great challenge due to the harsh conditions for activation of inert CO2 in that the harsh conditions result in undesired activation of α-C-H and even cleavage of C-C bond in ethanol to deteriorate the specific activation of O-H bond. Herein, we propose a photo-thermal cooperative strategy for carbonylation of ethanol with CO2 , in which CO2 is activated to reactive CO via photo-catalysis with the assistance of *H from thermally-catalyzed dissociation of alcoholic O-H bond. To achieve this proposal, an interfacial site and oxygen vacancy both abundant SrTiCuO3-x supported Cu2 O (Cu2 O-SrTiCuO3-x ) has been designed. A production of up to 320 μmol g-1  h-1 for ethyl formate with a selectivity of 85.6 % to targeted alcoholic O-H activation has been afforded in photo-thermal assisted gas-solid process under 3.29 W cm-1 of UV/Vis light irradiation (144 °C) and 0.2 MPa CO2 . In the photo-driven activation of CO2 and following carbonylation, CO2 activation energy decreases to 12.6 kJ mol-1 , and the cleavage of alcoholic α-C-H bond has been suppressed.

Comparison of Methyl Bromide and Ethyl Formate for Fumigation of Snail and Fly Pests of Imported Orchids

Invasive snails and flies are major pests of imported orchids, controlled by methyl bromide (MB) fumigation in Korea. We compared the efficacy and phytotoxicity of ethyl formate (EF) and MB on four species of imported orchids using juvenile stages of Achatina fulica and third and fourth instars of Lycoriella mali. EF was as effective as MB. The LCt99 values of EF were 68.1 and 73.1 g h/m3 at 15 °C; and those of MB were 95.9 and 78.4 g h/m3 at 15 °C for A. fulica and L. mali, respectively. In the scale-up trials, EF treatment at 35 g/m3 for 4 h at 15 °C resulted in complete control of both pests. MB treatment based on the current treatment guidelines for imported orchids (48 g/m3, 2 h, at >15 °C) resulted in complete control of L. mali but not of A. fulica. Chlorophyll content and hue values of treated orchids were not affected by EF treatment but significantly changed by MB (p-value < 0.05). All four treated species of orchids died within 30 d of MB treatment, while only one species died from EF treatment. Our results suggest that EF is a potential alternative to MB in phytosanitary treatment of imported orchids.

Synthesis and Characterization of Ethyl Formate Precursor for Activated Release Application

Ethyl formate (EF) is a generally recognized-as-safe flavoring agent commonly used in the food industry. It is a naturally occurring volatile with insecticidal and antimicrobial properties, promising as an alternate fumigant to methyl bromide which is undesirable due to its ozone depletion in the stratosphere and toxic properties. However, EF is highly volatile, flammable, and susceptible to hydrolytic degradation. These properties present considerable end-use challenges. In this study, a precursor of EF was synthesized via the condensation reaction of adipic acid dihydrazide and triethyl orthoformate to form diethyl N,N'-adipoyldiformohydrazonate, as confirmed by Fourier transformed infrared and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies. Differential scanning calorimetry analysis showed that the precursor had a melting point of 174 °C. The physical properties of the precursor were studied using scanning electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering analysis, which showed that the precursor was made up of agglomerated particulates with irregular shapes and sizes. The resulting precursor was nonvolatile and remained stable under dry conditions but could be hydrolyzed readily to trigger the release of EF. The release behaviors of EF from the precursor was evaluated by citric acid-catalyzed hydrolysis, showing that 0.38 ± 0.008 mg EF/mg precursor was released after 2 h at 25 °C, representing about 98% of the theoretical loading. Both EF release rate and its total release amount decreased significantly (p < 0.05) with decreasing temperature and relative humidity. The conversion of the highly volatile EF into a solid-state precursor, in conjunction with the activated release strategy, can be useful for controlled release of EF for fumigation and other applications in destroying insect pests and inhibiting the proliferation of spoilage microorganisms.

Fumigation Activity of Ethyl Formate and Phosphine Against Tetranychus urticae (Acari: Tetranychidae) on Imported Sweet Pumpkin

This study investigated an alternative fumigant for imported sweet pumpkin. Laboratory fumigations with ethyl formate (EF) and phosphine (PH3) alone and in combination were conducted at different temperatures in 12-liter desiccators to determine their efficacy and synergism against adults and eggs of two-spotted spider mites (Tetranychus urticae Koch), a major pest of sweet pumpkins; larger scale fumigations with EF were also performed to evaluate the impact of EF fumigation on the postharvest quality of sweet pumpkin and EF absorption. EF fumigation of 4 h achieved 100% control of both adults and eggs at 10°C. Efficacy of EF also increased with temperature. Conversely, PH3 fumigation for 4 and 6 h was not effective against either adults or eggs, and no synergism between EF and PH3 was observed. In larger scale fumigation tests, EF at 60 g/m3 for 4 h resulted in 100% control of both adults and eggs at 10°C, without causing injury to the sweet pumpkins. These results suggest that EF has the potential to be a safe and effective alternative to methyl bromide fumigation for controlling two-spotted spider mites on sweet pumpkin.
