Effects of dietary calcium, vitamin D3, and corn supplementation on growth performance and mineral metabolism in young goats fed whole milk diets

Twenty-four male goats, approximately 2 to 4 wk of age, were allotted to four dietary treatments in a 2 X 2 factorial design and were fed a basal milk diet at 12.5% body weight for 20 wk. Vitamin D3 was added to the milk in two different amounts with and without supplemental CaCO3. At the end of wk 7, corn was added to all diets at 1% body weight. Over 20 wk, average daily gain was unaltered by addition of Ca or vitamin D3 to the diet. When corn was added to the diet, gains increased from 48 to 180 g/d. Plasma Ca concentrations were not affected by dietary treatment. Supplemental Ca decreased plasma Mg concentrations. Corn supplementation curtailed a depression in plasma Mg and seemed to prevent a whole milk-induced hypomagnesemia. Fecal excretion of all minerals measured was increased in goats fed supplemental Ca. Dietary Ca increased urinary Ca but decreased urinary Mg. Percentage of apparent absorption of Ca, Mg, and total ash was lower in Ca-supplemented goats, as was apparent retention of Ca and Mg. The physiological responses reported suggest the goat as a potential research model for mineral metabolism studies in other ruminants.

The influence of high dietary calcium and phosphate on lead uptake and release

The effects of calcium and phosphate supplements on the retention of dietary lead and the loss of lead from the body were studied in young rats. There were three experiments in which rats were given a diet containing 200 or 400 micrograms of lead/g for 3 or 6 weeks. The diet contained adequate calcium and phosphate. Calcium and phosphate supplements were given alone or together. Lead uptake after a period of lead feeding was measured by analysis of the whole gut-free carcass. Lead loss was measured by a similar analysis after the rats had received diets containing lead and then diets free of lead. The uptake of lead from the diet was reduced by about half when either dietary calcium or phosphate or both was doubled. The rate of release of body lead was decreased by calcium supplementation.

Metabolism and toxicity of cadmium, mercury, and lead in animals: a review

Cadmium, mercury, and lead are toxic to humans and animals. Although cadmium and inorganic mercury toxicities occur in humans, they have not been observed in domestic livestock under practical conditions. In contrast, cattle, especially young calves, are extremely susceptible to lead toxicity. Apparently, cattle are more tolerant of cadmium than are other animal species. Due partially to higher absorption and longer retention times in the body, the alkyl mercuries, especially methyl mercury, are more toxic than inorganic mercury compounds. Inorganic forms of cadmium, mercury, and lead are poorly absorbed from the intestine. However, due to lack of effective homeostasis, after absorption retention time is long. Injected cadmium, mercury, and lead are metabolized differently from that naturally absorbed. Most cadmium and mercury are in kidney and liver (50 and 23% of total body in goats); but highest total load of methyl mercury is in muscle (72% in cows). With low to moderate body burden, most lead is retained in the skeleton. However, beyond a certain point, the kidney accumulates large quantities. Only minute amounts of cadmium and mercury are secreted into milk, but milk is only moderately well protected from dietary lead. Likewise, little cadmium and inorganic mercury pass the placental barrier whereas lead and methyl mercury pass more readily.

The effect of calcium on plasma lipids and bile acid and fecal fat excretion in normolipidemic subjects

The effect of oral calcium (2 g/day) was studied in four normolipidemic subjects. Calcium caused a significant lowering of plasma cholesterol and a considerable fall in the glycine-/taurine-conjugated bile acid ratio in the intestinal aspirate of one subject, while fecal bile acid excretion rose appreciably in another during treatment. These parameters showed no consistent trend in the other three subjects. None of the subjects showed any significant change in plasma triglycerides and serum calcium and phosphorus during treatment. One subject showed a consistent decrease in every parameter studied throughout the experiment, a trend which was probably due to a concomitant loss in body weight.
