Abstract
ABSTRACTChronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is one of the world's most significant causes of illness and mortality. It is vital to identify modifiable risk factors for COPD prevention and therapy, and the scientific community has started to focus closely on nutrition as a crucial component of COPD management, from prevention to treatment. For the progression, and management of obstructive lung illnesses like asthma and COPD, diet and nutrition may be modifiable risk factors of COPD. This review examined the connection between dietary habits, nutrient consumption, and obstructive lung disorders. Additionally, this review highlights and summarizes the evidence from observational and clinical studies regarding the influence of nutrients and dietary habits on lung function and the onset, progression, and outcomes of COPD and lung disease. Regarding the advancement or prevention of COPD, supplemental nutrition has an impact on the onset, progression, and treatment of COPD. Better pulmonary function, less deterioration in lung function, and a lower risk of COPD linked to nutraceuticals, particularly those with antioxidant and anti‐inflammatory effects, when combined with balancepatterns. Health providers may use an evidence‐based lifestyle approach to help counsel patients toward improved lung health if they are aware of the dietary implications of COPD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Given their antioxidative stress, anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory, and immune-modulating effects, flavonoids are hypothesized to play a role in preventing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. OBJECTIVES This cohort study aimed to examine associations between flavonoid intake and COPD, asthma, and lung function. METHODS Among 119,466 participants of the UK Biobank, median [interquartile range] age of 60 [53, 65] y, we estimated intakes of flavonoids, flavonoid-rich foods, and a flavodiet score from 24-h diet assessments. Prospective associations with both incident COPD and asthma and cross-sectional associations with measures of lung function [%predicted forced expiratory volume in 1s (FEV1); and FEV1/forced vital capacity (FVC)] were examined using multivariable-adjusted Cox proportional hazards and linear regression models, respectively. We investigated mediation by inflammation--represented by the INFLA score--and stratified analyses by smoking status. RESULTS Compared with low intakes, moderate intakes of total flavonoids, flavonols, theaflavins + thearubigins, and flavanones, and moderate-to-high intakes of flavanol monomers, proanthocyanidins, anthocyanins, flavones, and the flavodiet score were associated with up to an 18% lower risk of incident COPD {e.g., [hazard ratio (95% confidence interval) for total flavonoids: 0.83 (0.75, 0.92)]} but not incident asthma. Furthermore, compared with low intakes, higher intakes of all flavonoid subclasses (except theaflavins + thearubigins), and the flavodiet score were associated with better percent predicted FEV1 baseline. Associations were most apparent in ever (current or former) smokers. Flavonoid intakes were inversely associated with the INFLA score, which appeared to mediate 11%-14% of the association between intakes of proanthocyanidins and flavones and incident COPD. CONCLUSIONS Moderate-to-high flavonoid intakes were associated with a lower risk of COPD and better lung function, particularly among ever smokers. Promoting intakes of healthy flavonoid-rich foods, namely, tea, apples, and berries, may improve respiratory health and lower COPD risk, particularly in individuals with a smoking history.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a frequently diagnosed yet treatable condition, provided it is identified early and managed effectively. This study aims to develop an advanced COPD diagnostic model by integrating deep learning and radiomics features. METHODS We utilized a dataset comprising CT images from 2,983 participants, of which 2,317 participants also provided epidemiological data through questionnaires. Deep learning features were extracted using a Variational Autoencoder, and radiomics features were obtained using the PyRadiomics package. Multi-Layer Perceptrons were used to construct models based on deep learning and radiomics features independently, as well as a fusion model integrating both. Subsequently, epidemiological questionnaire data were incorporated to establish a more comprehensive model. The diagnostic performance of standalone models, the fusion model and the comprehensive model was evaluated and compared using metrics including accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, Brier score, receiver operating characteristic curves, and area under the curve (AUC). RESULTS The fusion model exhibited outstanding performance with an AUC of 0.952, surpassing the standalone models based solely on deep learning features (AUC = 0.844) or radiomics features (AUC = 0.944). Notably, the comprehensive model, incorporating deep learning features, radiomics features, and questionnaire variables demonstrated the highest diagnostic performance among all models, yielding an AUC of 0.971. CONCLUSION We developed and implemented a data fusion strategy to construct a state-of-the-art COPD diagnostic model integrating deep learning features, radiomics features, and questionnaire variables. Our data fusion strategy proved effective, and the model can be easily deployed in clinical settings. TRIAL REGISTRATION Not applicable. This study is NOT a clinical trial, it does not report the results of a health care intervention on human participants.

Abstract
Global production of the two major poultry products, meat and eggs, has increased quickly. This, in turn, indicates both the relatively low cost and the customers' desire for these secure and high-quality products. Natural feed additives have become increasingly popular to preserve and enhance the health and productivity of poultry and livestock. We consume a lot of polyphenols, which are a kind of micronutrient. These are phytochemicals with positive effects on cardiovascular, cognitive, anti-inflammatory, detoxifying, anti-tumor, anti-pathogen, a catalyst for growth, and immunomodulating functions, among extra health advantages. Furthermore, high quantities of polyphenols have unknown and occasionally unfavorable impacts on the digestive tract health, nutrient assimilation, the activity of digestive enzymes, vitamin and mineral assimilation, the performance of the laying hens, and the quality of the eggs. This review clarifies the numerous sources, categories, biological functions, potential limitations on usage, and effects of polyphenols on poultry performance, egg composition, exterior and interior quality traits.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Small airway dysfunction (SAD) is a widespread but less typical clinical manifestation of respiratory dysfunction. In lung diseases, SAD can have a higher-than-expected impact on lung function. The aim of this study was to explore risk factors for SAD and to establish a predictive model. METHODS We included 1233 patients in the pulmonary function room of TangDu Hospital from June 2021 to December 2021. We divided the subjects into a small airway disorder group and a non-small airway disorder group, and all participants completed a questionnaire. We performed univariate and multivariate analyses to identify the risk factors for SAD. Multivariate logistic regression was performed to construct the nomogram. The performance of the nomogram was assessed and validated by the Area under roc curve (AUC), calibration curves, and Decision curve analysis (DCA). RESULTS One. The risk factors for small airway disorder were advanced age (OR = 7.772,95% CI 2.284-26.443), female sex (OR = 1.545,95% CI 1.103-2.164), family history of respiratory disease (OR = 1.508,95% CI 1.069-2.126), history of occupational dust exposure (OR = 1.723,95% CI 1.177-2.521), history of smoking (OR = 1.732,95% CI 1.231-2.436), history of pet exposure (OR = 1.499,95% CI 1.065-2.110), exposure to O3 (OR = 1.008,95% CI 1.003-1.013), chronic bronchitis (OR = 1.947,95% CI 1.376-2.753), emphysema (OR = 2.190,95% CI 1.355-3.539) and asthma (OR = 7.287,95% CI 3.546-14.973). 2. The AUCs of the nomogram were 0.691 in the training set and 0.716 in the validation set. Both nomograms demonstrated favourable clinical consistency. 3.There was a dose‒response relationship between cigarette smoking and SAD; however, quitting smoking did not reduce the risk of SAD. CONCLUSION Small airway disorders are associated with age, sex, family history of respiratory disease, occupational dust exposure, smoking history, history of pet exposure, exposure to O3, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and asthma. The nomogram based on the above results can effectively used in the preliminary risk prediction.

Abstract
AIMS In this report, it was investigated that hepatoma cells can cause downregulation of cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) function and tea polyphenols (TPs) can reverse downregulation of CTL function. METHODS The expression of GRP78, PD-1, and TIM-3 was detected by western blotting in CTLL-2 cocultured with Hepa1-6 cells. Moreover, perforin (PRF1) and granzyme B (GzmB) protein levels and ER morphology were examined by ELISA and TEM, respectively. After 4-phenylbutyric acid (4-PBA) or tunicamycin (TM) treatment, programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1), and mucin domain 3 (TIM-3), PRF1, and GzmB were measured by western blotting and ELISA. After sh-CHOP or GSK2656157 (PERK inhibitor) stimulation, the activation of the PERK-CHOP pathway was detected in CTLL-2 cells. Finally, changes in PD-1, TIM-3, PRF1, and GzmB levels were detected to verify the reversal of CTL depletion by TP. RESULTS The expression of GRP78, PD-1, and TIM-3 clearly increased, and swelling was observed for the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) in CTLL-2 cells cocultured with hepatoma cells. Concurrently, the levels of PRF1 and GzmB decreased. CTLL-2 depletion was induced after stimulation with TM and differed from 4-PBA stimulation. Treatment with sh-CHOP or GSK2656157 caused a decrease in PD-1 and TIM-3 expression, whereas the expression of PRF1 and GzmB clearly increased. After adding TP, the function of CTLs increased markedly. CONCLUSION Hepatoma cells induced the depletion of CTLs through the ER stress PERK-CHOP pathway, and TP reversed this depletion by downregulating ER stress.

Abstract
(-)-Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) is a major polyphenol of green tea that possesses a wide variety of actions. EGCG acts as a strong antioxidant which effectively scavenges reactive oxygen species (ROS), inhibits pro-oxidant enzymes including NADPH oxidase, activates antioxidant systems including superoxide dismutase, catalase, or glutathione, and reduces abundant production of nitric oxide metabolites by inducible nitric oxide synthase. ECGC also exerts potent anti-inflammatory, anti-fibrotic, pro-apoptotic, anti-tumorous, and metabolic effects via modulation of a variety of intracellular signaling cascades. Based on this knowledge, the use of EGCG could be of benefit in respiratory diseases with acute or chronic inflammatory, oxidative, and fibrotizing processes in their pathogenesis. This article reviews current information on the biological effects of EGCG in those respiratory diseases or animal models in which EGCG has been administered, i.e., acute respiratory distress syndrome, respiratory infections, COVID-19, bronchial asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung fibrosis, silicosis, lung cancer, pulmonary hypertension, and lung embolism, and critically discusses effectiveness of EGCG administration in these respiratory disorders. For this review, articles in English language from the PubMed database were used.

Abstract
There has been a rapid increase in the world's output of main poultry products (meat and eggs). This reflects customer desire for these high-quality and safe products and the comparatively low price. Recently, natural feed additives, plants and products have been increasingly popular in the poultry and livestock industries to maintain and improve their health and production. Polyphenols are a type of micronutrient that is plentiful in our diet. They are phytochemicals that have health benefits, notably cardiovascular, cognitive function, antioxidant, anti-mutagenic, anti-inflammatory, antistress, anti-tumour, anti-pathogen, detoxification, growth-promoting and immunomodulating activities. On the other hand, excessive polyphenol levels have an unclear and sometimes negative impact on gastrointestinal tract health, nutrient digestion, digestive enzyme activity, vitamin, mineral absorption, laying hens performance and egg quality. As a result, this review illuminated polyphenols' various sources, classifications, biological activities, potential usage restrictions and effects on poultry, layer productivity and egg external and internal quality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In recent decades, obesity has become an epidemic worldwide and is a risk factor for many chronic diseases. Lung function is also a predictor of various chronic diseases. However, research results on the association between obesity and lung function are inconsistent and few studies have evaluated the association between central obesity indicators and lung function. Therefore, this study explored the correlation between central obesity and lung function. METHODS This study is a cross-sectional study. The basic participant characteristics were collected by questionnaire. A tape measure was used to measure waist circumference (WC) and hip circumference (HC). Body fat percentage was measured using an InBody370. Lung function parameters were measured using a digital spirometer connected to a computer (Chestgraph HI-101). R (R4.0.5) software was used for data analysis. A generalized linear model was used to analyze the association between obesity and lung function. RESULTS This study found that body mass index (BMI) adjusted for WC was negatively correlated with forced vital capacity (FVC) (β=-0.05 [-0.06, -0.03] in men, β=-0.05 [-0.07, -0.04] in women) and forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1)(β=-0.02 [-0.03, -0.00] in men, β=-0.03 [-0.04, -0.02] in women). Body fat percentage was negatively correlated with FVC (β=-0.01 [-0.01, -0.01] in men, β=-0.01 [-0.01, -0.00] in women). CONCLUSION Central obesity and combined central and general obesity were more strongly positively correlated with lung function. WC-adjusted BMI was negatively correlated with lung function. Body fat percentage was negatively correlated with lung function.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to examine changes in obesity rates and obesity-related factors during the COVID-19 pandemic compared to a previous period. METHODS An ecological time-series study was designed using the Korean National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (KNHANES) database from 2014 to 2020. The expected values of obesity rate, physical activity rate, and nutrient intake for 2020 were estimated. The differences between the predicted and actual values for 2020 were also examined. In addition, a multiple logistic regression model was used to examine the changes in obesity and physical activity rates in 2020 compared to 2019. RESULTS The actual obesity rates in 2020 were higher, and the walking and aerobic physical activity rates were lower than the predicted values for the same year. However, the actual resistance training rates in 2020 were higher and the total energy intake was lower than the predicted values for 2020. In the multiple logistic regression model, the odds ratios for obesity, aerobic physical activity, and walking among men in 2020 were 1.29 (95% CI: 1.08 to 1.55), 0.86 (0.74 to 1.01), and 0.84 (0.73 to 0.97), respectively, compared to those in 2019. However, there were no significant differences between the values for women in 2020 and 2019. CONCLUSIONS This study suggests that the male obesity rate in Korea has significantly increased during the COVID-19 epidemic, mainly due to a decrease in physical activity.

Abstract
Plant polyphenols are the main category of natural active substances, and are distributed widely in vegetables, fruits, and plant-based processed foods. Polyphenols have a beneficial performance in preventing diseases and maintaining body health. However, its action mechanism has not been well understood. Foodomics is a novel method to sequence and widely used in nutrition, combining genomics, proteomics, transcriptomics, microbiome, and metabolomics. Based on multi-omics technologies, foodomics provides abundant data to study functional activities of polyphenols. In this paper, physiological functions of various polyphenols based on foodomics and microbiome was discussed, especially the anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor activities and gut microbe regulation. In conclusion, omics (including microbiomics) is a useful approach to explore the bioactive activities of polyphenols in the nutrition and health of human and animals.

Abstract
Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase-1 (PARP-1) is a nuclear enzyme involved in processes of cell cycle regulation, DNA repair, transcription, and replication. Hyperactivity of PARP-1 induced by changes in cell homeostasis promotes development of chronic pathological processes leading to cell death during various metabolic disorders, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. In contrast, tumor growth is accompanied by a moderate activation of PARP-1 that supports survival of tumor cells due to enhancement of DNA lesion repair and resistance to therapy by DNA damaging agents. That is why PARP inhibitors (PARPi) are promising agents for the therapy of tumor and metabolic diseases. A PARPi family is rapidly growing partly due to natural polyphenols discovered among plant secondary metabolites. This review describes mechanisms of PARP-1 participation in the development of various pathologies, analyzes multiple PARP-dependent pathways of cell degeneration and death, and discusses representative plant polyphenols, which can inhibit PARP-1 directly or suppress unwanted PARP-dependent cellular processes.

Abstract
CONTEXT Chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD) is a progressive lung disease characterized by persistent airflow limitation. An increasing amount of evidence suggests an effect of dietary quality on the risk of COPD in the general population and pulmonary function decline in patients with COPD. OBJECTIVE The association of dietary intake and nutrient status with COPD risk and onset, as well as pulmonary function decline (change in forced expiratory volume in 1 second, forced vital capacity, or the ratio of the former to the latter) in patients with COPD was investigated in this systematic review. DATA SOURCES The PubMed database was searched by combining terms of pulmonary function or COPD with diet, nutrient status, or nutritional supplementation. DATA EXTRACTION Original studies and systematic reviews and meta-analyses were included. Articles obtained were independently screened for relevance on the bases of title and abstract by 2 researchers. Eventually, 89 articles were included in the analysis. RESULTS The unhealthy Western-style diet is associated with an increased risk of COPD and an accelerated decline of pulmonary function. Intake of fruit, vegetables, dietary fibers, vitamins C and E, polyphenols, and β-carotene were individually associated with lower COPD risk, whereas consumption of processed meat was associated with higher COPD risk. Data on the effect of dietary quality on pulmonary function decline in patients with COPD are limited and inconsistent. Strong evidence for beneficial effects on pulmonary function decline was found only for vitamin D supplementation. CONCLUSION Considering the increasing burden of COPD, more attention should be given to dietary quality as a modifiable factor in disease development and progression in patients with COPD. Abstract
Objective The anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory actions of phytochemicals and the smooth muscle relaxant actions of theophylline present in tea may confer pulmonary protection and reduce COPD risk. We investigated tea consumption (black, oolong, or green) association with COPD risks in a population-based cohort study of older adults aged ≥55. Methods GOLD criteria was used to identify prevalent and incident cases of COPD (FEV1/FVC <0.70) among 4617 participants and 920 participants free of COPD at baseline who were assessed at follow-up 4.5 years later. Results Prevalent cases of COPD consumed less tea than their non-COPD counterparts. Estimated odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) of association with prevalent COPD, adjusted for age, sex, ethnicity, housing type, smoking, alcohol, physical activity and BMI declined across tea consumption levels (p-trend=0.048), and was lowest for ≥3 cups/day (OR=0.77, 95% CI=0.61–0.96). The cumulated incidence of COPD declined across tea consumption categories (p-trend=0.012) and the lowest OR of association (OR=0.35, 95% CI=0.17–0.69) with consuming ≥3 cups/day after co-variate adjustment. Conclusion Different kinds of tea showed similar non-significant trends of associations but appeared to be strongest for green tea. Tea consumption in this Asian population was associated with lowered COPD prevalence and incidence.

Abstract
Green tea is commonly consumed in China, Japan, and Korea and certain parts of North Africa and is gaining popularity in other parts of the world. The aim of this review was to objectively evaluate the existing evidence related to green tea consumption and various health outcomes, especially cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. This review captured evidence from meta-analyses as well as expert reports and recent individual studies. For certain individual cancer sites: endometrial, lung, oral and ovarian cancer, and non-Hodgkins lymphoma the majority of meta-analyses observed an inverse association with green tea. Mixed findings were observed for breast, esophageal, gastric, liver and a mostly null association for colorectal, pancreatic, and prostate cancer. No studies reported adverse effects from green tea related to cancer although consuming hot tea has been found to possibly increase the risk of esophageal cancer and concerns of hepatotoxity were raised as a result of high doses of green tea. The literature overall supports an inverse association between green tea and cardiovascular disease-related health outcomes. The evidence for diabetes-related health outcomes is less convincing, while the included meta-analyses generally suggested an inverse association between green tea and BMI-related and blood pressure outcomes. Fewer studies investigated the association between green tea and other health outcomes such as cognitive outcomes, dental health, injuries and respiratory disease. This review concludes that green tea consumption overall may be considered beneficial for human health.

Abstract
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a multifactorial disease, in which systemic inflammation plays a key role. This 6-month randomized double-blinded placebo-controlled study evaluates the possible effect of natural preparation Inflaminat on clinical symptoms of COPD, indicators of respiratory function, and exacerbation frequency in 60 patients with moderate severity of COPD. Inflaminat is a combination of natural ingredients black elder (Sambucus nigra L.) berries, violet (Viola tricolor L.) herb, and calendula (Calendula officinalis L.) flowers. The preparation has been previously demonstrated to possess anticytokine and anti-inflammatory effects in experimental studies. In present study, COPD dynamics were evaluated by means of BCSS (Breathlessness, Cough, and Sputum Scale) and spirometry tests. It was shown that 6-months Inflaminat administration led to significant decrease of BCSS points from 3.0 ± 0.6 to 1.9 ± 0.7, (p = 0.002) as well as significant increase of FEV1 from 66 ± 18% to 73 ± 17%, (p = 0.042); there were no beneficial dynamics in placebo group. Side effects associated with preparation administration were not identified. The results of the study suggest that Inflaminat may be employed in treatment of patients with moderate severity of COPD, since it has a positive effect on COPD symptoms according BCSS and indicators of respiratory function FEV1.

Abstract
Some beverages and smoking cause an inflammatory response in the lungs and airways in a similar way, ultimately affecting chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) occurrence. Using a nationally representative health survey database, this study investigates the individual and joint effects of consumption of different beverages and smoking on COPD. This study is a cross-sectional analysis of 15,961 Korean adults in the Korea National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey of 2008–2015. COPD was defined as forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) divided by forced vital capacity (FVC) <0.70. We used multiple linear and logistic regression models to examine the association of beverage consumption and smoking with an FEV1/FVC ratio and odds ratio (OR) for COPD. The mean FEV1/FVC ratio decreased with increasing soda intake (p = 0.016), coffee intake (p = 0.031), and smoking status; however, the mean FEV1/FVC ratio increased with increasing green tea intake frequency (p = 0.029). When soda intake increased to 10 times/month, the OR of having COPD increased to 1.04 times (95% CI: 1.01, 1.07). The positive joint effect of soda intake and smoking on COPD was marginally significant (p = 0.058). We found that soda intake, coffee intake, and smoking increased airflow limitation while green tea intake decreased it. In addition, soda intake and smoking had a positive joint effect on COPD in the Korean population.

Abstract
Objective: Although previous studies suggest that previous pulmonary tuberculosis was associated with increased risk of lung cancer. It remains controversial whether pulmonary tuberculosis is a risk factor for lung cancer. Our study was aimed to examine the association between pulmonary tuberculosis and lung cancer risk in Korean. Methods: The Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey database was linked with the Korean National Cancer Incidence Database to examine the occurrence of pulmonary tuberculosis and lung cancer. The linked databases were also merged with causes of death database of Statistics Korea. The Cox-proportional hazards model was used to estimates the hazard risk of lung cancer for Korean adults aged ≥40 years with pulmonary tuberculosis. Results: Of 20,252 total participants, 2,640 (13.0%) had old pulmonary tuberculosis (a medical history of pulmonary tuberculosis or radiologically inactive tuberculosis). After adjusting for all covariates, the hazard ratio of lung cancer among patients with old pulmonary tuberculosis was 3.24 (95% CI, 1.87‒5.62) compared to the control group. According to smoking status, the hazard ratios of lung cancer for never smokers, ex-smokers, and current smokers among participants with old pulmonary tuberculosis were 3.52 (95% CI, 1.17‒10.63), 2.16 (95% CI, 0.89‒5.24), and 3.71 (95% CI, 1.49‒9.22) compared to the control group, respectively. Conclusions: Korean adults with old pulmonary tuberculosis have a higher risk of lung cancer, compared to general population without pulmonary tuberculosis.

Abstract
Tea is the most widely used beverage worldwide. Japanese and Chinese people have been drinking tea for centuries and in Asia, it is the most consumed beverage besides water. It is a rich source of pharmacologically active molecules which have been implicated to provide diverse health benefits. The three major forms of tea are green, black and oolong tea based on the degree of fermentation. The composition of tea differs with the species, season, leaves, climate, and horticultural practices. Polyphenols are the major active compounds present in teas. The catechins are the major polyphenolic compounds in green tea, which include epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), epigallocatechin, epicatechin-3-gallate and epicatechin, gallocatechins and gallocatechin gallate. EGCG is the predominant and most studied catechin in green tea. There are numerous evidences from cell culture and animal studies that tea polyphenols have beneficial effects against several pathological diseases including cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. The polyphenolic compounds present in black tea include theaflavins and thearubigins. In this review article, we will summarize recent studies documenting the role of tea polyphenols in the prevention of cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular and neurological diseases.
