Parents' Empathic Accuracy: Associations With Type 1 Diabetes Management and Familism

Impact of family environment on mental disorders and quality of life in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus: a cross-sectional study and intervention policy analysis

Background

Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is common in adolescents and negatively affects their quality of life and mental health. This study examines the impact of family environment on mental disorders and quality of life in adolescents with T1DM and analyzes related intervention policies.

Methods

A retrospective analysis was conducted on 75 adolescents with T1DM admitted between October 2020 and December 2023, with 75 healthy adolescents as a control group. Assessments included SCARED, DSRSC, FES, SCL-90, and PedsQL 4.0. Correlation analysis explored the relationships between family environment, anxiety, depression, quality of life and glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1C).

Results

Significant differences (P < 0.05) were found between the T1DM and control groups in family conflict, independence, harmony, and emotional expression. The T1DM group had higher anxiety, depression, and poorer quality of life. Family cohesion was negatively correlated with mental state, anxiety, depression, and HbA1C, while emotional expression was positively correlated with role functioning.

Conclusion

The family environment significantly impacts the mental health and quality of life of adolescents with T1DM. Enhancing emotional expression and family cohesion can improve outcomes, highlighting the need for targeted interventions.

Thought-Feeling Accuracy in Person Perception and Metaperception: An Integrative Perspective

People often want to know what their interaction partners are thinking. How accurate are they, what information do they use, what predicts how accurate they will be, and does accuracy matter? We organize our review of thought-feeling accuracy, defined as the accuracy of individuals' judgments about the content of another person's thoughts and feelings in live interaction, around these questions. At the same time, we argue that often people are especially interested in what others are thinking about them, such that research on the accuracy of individuals' metaperceptions regarding others' views of them is highly relevant to understanding thought-feeling accuracy more broadly construed. In particular, we maintain that systematic biases characterizing individuals' spontaneous metaperceptions are an important source of preventable and harmful forms of thought-feeling inaccuracy. We advocate for integration across the thought-feeling accuracy and meta-accuracy literatures so as to generate new insights that can move them both forward.

Comparison of perceived parental empathy between adolescents with leukemia and healthy adolescents: A comparative descriptive study

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to investigate and compare perceived parental empathy between adolescents with and without leukemia.

Methods

This study used a cross-sectional, descriptive design. Thirty-eight adolescents with leukemia and 205 without, completed a self-reported questionnaire regarding their perceptions of parental empathy and general characteristics. For this comparative study, adolescents were selected through matched sampling, and 38 adolescents per group were used for analysis. Data were examined using independent t-tests.

Results

In terms of parental empathy, excessive emotional reactions and cold emotional reactions were perceived more frequently by adolescents with leukemia than healthy adolescents. Differences between the two groups were statistically significant.

Conclusion

Since parents caring for children with leukemia have an extra burden in caring for their children, these parents are continuously anxious about prognoses, and tend to feel guilty for their child's disease. Thus, healthcare providers need to develop a program for improving the ability of parents of cancer patients to demonstrate empathy, focusing on how to recognize and manage what may be perceived by their children as excessive or cold emotional reactions, and must take a role in communicating to parents how adolescents with leukemia perceive parental rearing behaviors and the impacts of these behaviors on their well-being.
