Abstract
AIMS Maternal caregiver involvement is strongly associated with psychosocial and glycemic outcomes amongst adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D); however, previous studies have lacked detailed, objective examinations of caregiver involvement. We examined the relationship between observed parenting behaviors and psychosocial and glycemic outcomes amongst youth with T1D. METHODS Data collected from adolescents with T1D (age 11-17) and their female caregivers as a part of a randomized controlled trial were analyzed. These included structured, observation-based scores of adolescent-caregiver dyads engaged in videotaped interactions and selected psychosocial and glycemic outcome measures. RESULTS In adjusted analyses, higher levels of intrusive parenting behaviors during observed interactions were associated with higher diabetes distress in adolescents, but no difference in HbA1c. Associations between intrusive parenting behaviors and psychosocial outcomes were stronger for females compared to males for both diabetes distress and quality of life. Similarly, associations between collaborative parenting behaviors and quality of life were stronger for female adolescents than males. No associations were observed between collaborative parenting behaviors and glycemic outcomes. Consistent with previous work, we noted higher levels of adolescent-reported family conflict were associated with lower adolescent quality of life and higher diabetes distress with no significant difference between male and female adolescents. CONCLUSION These findings indicate that high levels of intrusive parenting behaviors, such as lecturing or over-controlling behaviors, are associated with lower levels of adolescent well-being, particularly among adolescent girls. This work suggests that interventions to reduce intrusive parenting by maternal caregivers could result in improved psychosocial outcomes for adolescents with T1D.

Abstract
Background Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a common, chronic pediatric health condition with complicated management demands. African American and Latino children with T1D have troubling disparities in glycemic outcomes and acute complications. While there are empirically supported behavioral interventions to support disease management in youth with T1D, there are few that specifically aim to reduce health disparities in this population. While collaborative parent involvement with the child with T1D management tasks is important to promote optimal glycemic outcomes during childhood, our formative research identified multiple individual, family, and broader system factors that impede or facilitate collaborative parental involvement among African American and Latino parents of children with T1D. Methods This paper describes the development, design, and study protocol for the Type 1 Diabetes Empowerment And Management (TEAM) pilot trial. The TEAM intervention is a novel, group-based behavioral intervention designed to enhance collaborative involvement in T1D management for African American and Latino parents of children aged 5-10. This randomized pilot trial's primary aim is to evaluate the TEAM intervention's feasibility and acceptability. The secondary aim is to examine preliminary intervention outcomes (i.e., children's HbA1c, treatment adherence, collaborative parent involvement in T1D management, parent/child quality of life, and parent's diabetes-related distress, depressive symptoms, and self-efficacy) compared to usual T1D care. Discussion The trial will provide preliminary information about whether optimizing appropriate parent involvement during the school-age years may increase T1D treatment adherence and stabilize or improve glycemic control in African American and Latino school-aged children.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE US disparities in pediatric type 1 diabetes treatment and outcomes are increasing disproportionately among Black youth and compounded for youth from single parent homes. Despite worsened outcomes, Black youth from single parent homes and their caregivers are underrepresented in pediatric type 1 diabetes research. The purpose of this study was to understand the social determinants of health (SDOH) barriers that may contribute to health disparities and family management in Black youth with type 1 diabetes from single parent homes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS A three-phase mixed methods study with self-identified Black single parents of youth with type 1 diabetes from an urban US pediatric diabetes center was conducted. Focus groups and interviews informed development of a parent-generated survey of SDOH barriers to diabetes management. Survey results are presented. RESULTS A resulting 71 item parent-generated survey was administered to 105 parents. Among all items, most problematic SDOH barriers included lack of social support, managing parent/child diabetes-related stress, difficulties accessing diabetes supplies, pain management, cost of food and diabetes camp, need to take time off from work, lack of skilled school staff, school absences and unsafe neighborhoods. Structural racism related to child welfare reporting, and police targeting were also notable concerns. CONCLUSIONS There is a critical need for clinical, community, and policy-related research and interventions, designed to reduce type 1 diabetes racial health disparities by addressing the impacts of SDOH as drivers of family management outcomes among Black youth from single parent families.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to describe parents' perceptions of the factors that facilitate or are barriers to their involvement in children's type 1 diabetes (T1D) management among African American and Latino parents. METHODS African American and Latino parents (N = 28) of 5- to 9-year-old children with T1D completed audio-recorded, semi-structured interviews that were transcribed and analyzed using thematic analysis. Themes were identified that aligned with the theoretically-derived Capability-Opportunity-Motivation-Behavior (COM-B) framework. RESULTS Parents described Capability-based facilitators of parent involvement, including positive stress management, religious/spiritual coping, organizational/planning skills, and diabetes knowledge. Capability-based barriers included child and parent distress. Interpersonal relationships, degree of flexibility in work environments, and access to diabetes technologies were both Opportunity-based facilitators and barriers; and Opportunity-based barriers consisted of food insecurity/low financial resources. Parents' desire for their child to have a "normal" life was described as both a Motivation-based facilitator and barrier. CONCLUSIONS African American and Latino families described helpful and unhelpful factors that spanned all aspects of the COM-B model. Reinforcing or targeting families' unique psychological, interpersonal, and environmental strengths and challenges in multilevel interventions has potential to maximize parental involvement in children's diabetes management.

Abstract
Background Nonclinical determinants of health are of increasing importance to health care delivery and health policy. Concurrent with growing interest in better addressing patients’ nonmedical issues is the exponential growth in availability of data sources that provide insight into these nonclinical determinants of health. Objective This review aimed to characterize the state of the existing literature on the use of nonclinical health indicators in conjunction with clinical data sources. Methods We conducted a rapid review of articles and relevant agency publications published in English. Eligible studies described the effect of, the methods for, or the need for combining nonclinical data with clinical data and were published in the United States between January 2010 and April 2018. Additional reports were obtained by manual searching. Records were screened for inclusion in 2 rounds by 4 trained reviewers with interrater reliability checks. From each article, we abstracted the measures, data sources, and level of measurement (individual or aggregate) for each nonclinical determinant of health reported. Results A total of 178 articles were included in the review. The articles collectively reported on 744 different nonclinical determinants of health measures. Measures related to socioeconomic status and material conditions were most prevalent (included in 90% of articles), followed by the closely related domain of social circumstances (included in 25% of articles), reflecting the widespread availability and use of standard demographic measures such as household income, marital status, education, race, and ethnicity in public health surveillance. Measures related to health-related behaviors (eg, smoking, diet, tobacco, and substance abuse), the built environment (eg, transportation, sidewalks, and buildings), natural environment (eg, air quality and pollution), and health services and conditions (eg, provider of care supply, utilization, and disease prevalence) were less common, whereas measures related to public policies were rare. When combining nonclinical and clinical data, a majority of studies associated aggregate, area-level nonclinical measures with individual-level clinical data by matching geographical location. Conclusions A variety of nonclinical determinants of health measures have been widely but unevenly used in conjunction with clinical data to support population health research.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine differences in parenting styles between mothers of children with type 1 diabetes and mothers of healthy children and to explore relationships between parenting styles and glycemic control of children with diabetes. Mothers of 63 children with diabetes and mothers of 83 children without diabetes reported their parenting styles using the Blocks' Child Rearing Practices Report, when their child was 9⁻10 years old. Glycemic control of the children with diabetes was evaluated 1 year after diagnosis (<6 years of age) and at the time of the study (at 9⁻10 years). Mothers of children with diabetes used more psychological control than mothers of healthy children. Among girls with diabetes, poorer early glycemic control was associated with mothers' subsequent greater use of psychological control. Behavioral control was positively associated with poorer current glycemic control. In boys, psychological control was positively associated with poorer current glycemic control. Psychological control in families with diabetes needs attention, because it has shown to be associated with poorer diabetes care.

Abstract
Multiple sources of burden for youth with type 1 diabetes (T1D) impact key outcomes including quality of life, self-management, and glycemic control. Professional diabetes organizations recommend diabetes care providers screen for psychosocial and behavioral challenges and implement strategies to support youth with T1D. The purpose of this article is to review the literature and recommend practical strategies medical providers can use for screening and behavioral support for youth with diabetes and their families. As part of their routine medical care, diabetes care providers are well-positioned to identify and intervene to address emotional distress related to the burdens of living with diabetes. In collaboration with multidisciplinary team members, including psychologists and mental health professionals, medical providers may be able to successfully implement brief behavioral strategies for screening and providing emotional support.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Type 1 diabetes (T1D) incidence in youth is growing across all racial/ethnic backgrounds, with the most marked increase in African-American youth under 5. Underrepresented racial/ethnic minorities are at an increased risk for health complications. This review focuses on the reported disparities, demographics of samples in behavioral interventions, and study design considerations. RECENT FINDINGS Recruitment data from two ongoing behavioral intervention trials for young children with T1D are presented to compare enrolled/non-enrolled individuals and to discuss culturally appropriate study design considerations. Data were compared to the demographics of children (ages 1-6) with T1D in the clinic populations from the recruitment sites. Enrolling a representative sample and designing culturally appropriate behavioral interventions are important for generalizability, yet there is a gap between the individuals participating in T1D research and those who are most negatively affected by T1D. Suggestions are offered for ways to expand inclusion of diverse samples in behavioral intervention research in T1D.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Adolescence is a well known, high-risk time period for all youth, and in patients with type 1 diabetes, glycemic control is at its worst. This manuscript will review updates in adolescent diabetes literature between February 2014 and February 2015. The article will highlight new research in the behavioural and psychosocial literature focused on type 1 diabetes in adolescents, including compliance with standards of care, quality of life, depression, psychological burden of type 1 diabetes, parental involvement, the parent-child relationship, self-management, socioeconomic status and transition and transfer of care. Recent behavioural interventions focusing on adolescents with type 1 diabetes will also be discussed. RECENT FINDINGS These literature updates have found that behavioural and psychosocial concerns remain prevalent in adolescents with type 1 diabetes, psychological needs in the population are not being met and current interventions have not been largely successful in impacting outcomes. SUMMARY Behavioural and psychosocial issues in adolescents with type 1 diabetes greatly impact their diabetes and general life outcomes. Additional research, specifically interventions successfully addressing the behavioural and psychosocial issues in this population, is desperately needed.

Abstract
Sustained parental involvement in diabetes management has been generally advised to counteract the deteriorating adherence and glycemic control often seen during adolescence, yet until recently, little attention has been given to the optimal amount, type, and quality of parental involvement to promote the best health outcomes for adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D). This review synthesizes research regarding the involvement of caregivers-primarily mothers and fathers-of youth with T1D, with a focus on biopsychosocial outcomes. The recent literature on parental involvement in diabetes management highlights a shift in focus from not only amount but also the types (e.g., monitoring, problem-solving) and quality (e.g., warm, critical) of involvement in both mothers and fathers. We provide recommendations for ways that both parents can remain involved to facilitate greater collaboration in shared direct and indirect responsibility for diabetes care and improve outcomes in youth with T1D.
