Experimental measurement of the quantum geometric tensor using coupled qubits in diamond

The quantum geometric origin of capacitance in insulators

In band insulators, without a Fermi surface, adiabatic transport can exist due to the geometry of the ground state wavefunction. Here we show that for systems driven at a small but finite frequency ω, transport likewise depends sensitively on quantum geometry. We make this statement precise by expressing the Kubo formula for conductivity as the variation of the time-dependent polarization with respect to the applied field. We find that at linear order in frequency, the longitudinal conductivity results from an intrinsic capacitance determined by the ratio of the quantum metric and the spectral gap, establishing a fundamental link between the dielectric response and the quantum metric of insulators. We demonstrate that quantum geometry is responsible for the electronic contribution to the dielectric constant in a wide range of insulators, including the free electron gas in a quantizing magnetic field, for which we show the capacitance is quantized. We also study gapped bands of hBN-aligned twisted bilayer graphene and obstructed atomic insulators such as diamond. In the latter, we find its abnormally large refractive index to have a topological origin.

Essay: Where Can Quantum Geometry Lead Us?

Quantum geometry defines the phase and amplitude distances between quantum states. The phase distance is characterized by the Berry curvature and thus relates to topological phenomena. The significance of the full quantum geometry, including the amplitude distance characterized by the quantum metric, has started to receive attention in the last few years. Various quantum transport and interaction phenomena have been found to be critically influenced by quantum geometry. For example, quantum geometry allows counterintuitive flow of supercurrent in a flat band where single electrons are immobile. In this Essay, I will discuss my view of the important open problems and future applications of this research topic and will try to inspire the reader to come up with further ideas. At its best, quantum geometry can open a new chapter in band theory and lead to breakthroughs as transformative as room-temperature superconductivity. However, first, more experiments directly showing the effect of quantum geometry are needed. We also have to integrate quantum geometry analysis in our most advanced numerical methods. Further, the ramifications of quantum geometry should be studied in a wider range, including electric and electromagnetic responses and interaction phenomena in free- and correlated-electron materials, bosonic systems, optics, and other fields. Optimal Generators for Quantum Sensing

We propose a computationally efficient method to derive the unitary evolution that a quantum state is most sensitive to. This allows one to determine the optimal use of an entangled state for quantum sensing, even in complex systems where intuition from canonical squeezing examples breaks down. In this paper we show that the maximal obtainable sensitivity using a given quantum state is determined by the largest eigenvalue of the quantum Fisher information matrix (QFIM) and the corresponding evolution is uniquely determined by the coinciding eigenvector. Since we optimize the process of parameter encoding rather than focusing on state preparation protocols, our scheme is relevant for any quantum sensor. This procedure naturally optimizes multiparameter estimation by determining, through the eigenvectors of the QFIM, the maximal set of commuting observables with optimal sensitivity.

A synthetic monopole source of Kalb-Ramond field in diamond

Magnetic monopoles play a central role in areas of physics that range from electromagnetism to topological matter. String theory promotes conventional vector gauge fields of electrodynamics to tensor gauge fields and predicts the existence of more exotic tensor monopoles. Here, we report the synthesis of a tensor monopole in a four-dimensional parameter space defined by the spin degrees of freedom of a single solid-state defect in diamond. Using two complementary methods, we characterized the tensor monopole by measuring its quantized topological charge and its emanating Kalb-Ramond field. By introducing a fictitious external field that breaks chiral symmetry, we further observed an intriguing spectral transition, characterized by spectral rings protected by mirror symmetries. Our work demonstrates the possibility of emulating exotic topological structures inspired by string theory.

Measurement of Spin Chern Numbers in Quantum Simulated Topological Insulators

The topology of quantum systems has become a topic of great interest since the discovery of topological insulators. However, as a hallmark of the topological insulators, the spin Chern number has not yet been experimentally detected. The challenge to directly measure this topological invariant lies in the fact that this spin Chern number is defined based on artificially constructed wave functions. Here we experimentally mimic the celebrated Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang model with cold atoms, and then measure the spin Chern number with the linear response theory. We observe that, although the Chern number for each spin component is ill defined, the spin Chern number measured by their difference is still well defined when both energy and spin gaps are nonvanished.

Experimental Measurement of the Divergent Quantum Metric of an Exceptional Point

The geometry of Hamiltonian's eigenstates is encoded in the quantum geometric tensor (QGT), containing both the Berry curvature, central to the description of topological matter, and the quantum metric. So far, the full QGT has been measured only in Hermitian systems, where the role of the quantum metric is mostly limited to corrections. On the contrary, in non-Hermitian systems, and, in particular, near exceptional points, the quantum metric is expected to diverge and to often play a dominant role, for example, in the enhanced sensing and in wave packet dynamics. In this Letter, we report the first experimental measurement of the quantum metric in a non-Hermitian system. The specific platform under study is an organic microcavity with exciton-polariton eigenstates, which demonstrate exceptional points. We measure the quantum metric's divergence, and we determine the scaling exponent n=-1.01±0.08, which is in agreement with the theoretical description of second-order exceptional points.

Nontrivial band geometry in an optically active system

Optical activity, also called circular birefringence, is known for two hundred years, but its applications for topological photonics remain unexplored. Unlike the Faraday effect, the optical activity provokes rotation of the linear polarization of light without magnetic effects, thus preserving the time-reversal symmetry. In this work, we report a direct measurement of the Berry curvature and quantum metric of the photonic modes of a planar cavity, containing a birefringent organic microcrystal (perylene) and exhibiting emergent optical activity. This experiment, performed at room temperature and at visible wavelength, establishes the potential of organic materials for implementing non-magnetic and low-cost topological photonic devices.

Experimental Observation of Tensor Monopoles with a Superconducting Qudit

Monopoles play a center role in gauge theories and topological matter. There are two fundamental types of monopoles in physics: vector monopoles and tensor monopoles. Examples of vector monopoles include the Dirac monopole in three dimensions and Yang monopole in five dimensions, which have been extensively studied and observed in condensed matter or artificial systems. However, tensor monopoles are less studied, and their observation has not been reported. Here we experimentally construct a tunable spin-1 Hamiltonian to generate a tensor monopole and then measure its unique features with superconducting quantum circuits. The energy structure of a 4D Weyl-like Hamiltonian with threefold degenerate points acting as tensor monopoles is imaged. Through quantum-metric measurements, we report the first experiment that measures the Dixmier-Douady invariant, the topological charge of the tensor monopole. Moreover, we observe topological phase transitions characterized by the topological Dixmier-Douady invariant, rather than the Chern numbers as used for conventional monopoles in odd-dimensional spaces.

Experimental protection of quantum coherence by using a phase-tunable image drive

The protection of quantum coherence is essential for building a practical quantum computer able to manipulate, store and read quantum information with a high degree of fidelity. Recently, it has been proposed to increase the operation time of a qubit by means of strong pulses to achieve a dynamical decoupling of the qubit from its environment. We propose and demonstrate a simple and highly efficient alternative route based on Floquet modes, which increases the Rabi decay time (\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$T_R$$\end{document}TR) in a number of materials with different spin Hamiltonians and environments. Microwave Spectroscopy Reveals the Quantum Geometric Tensor of Topological Josephson Matter

Quantization effects due to topological invariants such as Chern numbers have become very relevant in many systems, yet key quantities such as the quantum geometric tensor providing local information about quantum states remain experimentally difficult to access. Recently, it has been shown that multiterminal Josephson junctions constitute an ideal platform to synthesize topological systems in a controlled manner. We theoretically study properties of Andreev states in topological Josephson matter and demonstrate that the quantum geometric tensor of Andreev states can be extracted by synthetically polarized microwaves. The oscillator strength of the absorption rates provides direct evidence of topological quantum properties of the Andreev states.

Complete Quantum-State Tomography with a Local Random Field

Single-qubit measurements are typically insufficient for inferring arbitrary quantum states of a multiqubit system. We show that, if the system can be fully controlled by driving a single qubit, then utilizing a local random pulse is almost always sufficient for complete quantum-state tomography. Experimental demonstrations of this principle are presented using a nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond coupled to a nuclear spin, which is not directly accessible. We report the reconstruction of a highly entangled state between the electron and nuclear spin with fidelity above 95% by randomly driving and measuring the NV-center electron spin only. Beyond quantum-state tomography, we outline how this principle can be leveraged to characterize and control quantum processes in cases where the system model is not known.
