Three-Dimensional-Printed Spherical Hollow Structural Scaffolds for Guiding Critical-Sized Bone Regeneration

The treatment of bone tissue defects continues to be a complex medical issue. Recently, three-dimensional (3D)-printed scaffold technology for bone tissue engineering (BTE) has emerged as an important therapeutic approach for bone defect repair. Despite the potential of BTE scaffolds to contribute to long-term bone reconstruction, there are certain challenges associated with it including the impediment of bone growth within the scaffolds and vascular infiltration. These difficulties can be resolved by using scaffold structural modification strategies that can effectively guide bone regeneration. This study involved the preparation of biphasic calcium phosphate spherical hollow structural scaffolds (SHSS) with varying pore sizes using 3D printing (photopolymerized via digital light processing). The chemical compositions, microscopic morphologies, mechanical properties, biocompatibilities, osteogenic properties, and impact on repairing critical-sized bone defects of SHSS were assessed through characterization analyses, in vitro cytological assays, and in vivo biological experiments. The results revealed the biomimetic properties of SHSS and their favorable biocompatibility. The scaffolds stimulated cell adhesion, proliferation, differentiation, and migration and facilitated the expression of osteogenic genes and proteins, including Col-1, OCN, and OPN. Furthermore, they could effectively repair a critical-sized bone defect in a rabbit femoral condyle by establishing an osteogenic platform and guiding bone regeneration in the defect region. This innovative strategy presents a novel therapeutic approach for assessing critical-sized bone defects.

Critical-size defects reconstruction with four different bone grafts associated with e-PTFE membrane: A histomorphometric experimental in vivo study

OBJECTIVES

The goal of this study was to assess the newly formed bone and the remnant biomaterial by comparing four different bone grafts used to treat critical-size defects, associated or not with the non-resorbable membrane.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Two calvaria critical-size bone defects were created in 50 male Wistar rats. They were divided into blood (G1), autogenous (G2), bioglass (G3), hydroxyapatite (G4), and xenograft (G5) groups, associated or not with e-PTFE. The experimental periods were 15 and 45 days. Sections were prepared for histomorphometric assessment. All data were analyzed by the mixed-effects model with multiple comparisons (significance level, p < .05).

RESULTS

A similar level of new bone was observed for all groups, associated with a high level of vascularization. G1 and G2 ensured sovereignty over the greater quantity of new bone. A non-significant result was reported comparing groups with and without membranes. No significant result was found between the experimental synthetic biomaterials (G3 and G4). G5L achieved 22.0% of new bone after 45 days (p > .05). All groups had a stable volume of biomaterial kept in the short term (p > .05). G2 was the best material for new bone formation and final volume of biomaterial, followed by G4 < G5 < G3. Thus, it is possible that G4 had a better degradation profile among the experimental groups.

CONCLUSIONS

The best results were found in the autogenous group, with higher resorption and integration; non-significative new bone was found among the experimental groups; and the regeneration of critical bone defects using an e-PTFE barrier did not present significant results on new bone formation.

Recent advancement in vascularized tissue-engineered bone based on materials design and modification

Bone is one of the most vascular network-rich tissues in the body and the vascular system is essential for the development, homeostasis, and regeneration of bone. When segmental irreversible damage occurs to the bone, restoring its vascular system by means other than autogenous bone grafts with vascular pedicles is a therapeutic challenge. By pre-generating the vascular network of the scaffold in vivo or in vitro, the pre-vascularization technique enables an abundant blood supply in the scaffold after implantation. However, pre-vascularization techniques are time-consuming, and in vivo pre-vascularization techniques can be damaging to the body. Critical bone deficiencies may be filled quickly with immediate implantation of a supporting bone tissue engineered scaffold. However, bone tissue engineered scaffolds generally lack vascularization, which requires modification of the scaffold to aid in enhancing internal vascularization. In this review, we summarize the relationship between the vascular system and osteogenesis and use it as a basis to further discuss surgical and cytotechnology-based pre-vascularization strategies and to describe the preparation of vascularized bone tissue engineered scaffolds that can be implanted immediately. We anticipate that this study will serve as inspiration for future vascularized bone tissue engineered scaffold construction and will aid in the achievement of clinical vascularized bone.

Construction of Microfluidic Chip Structure for Cell Migration Studies in Bioactive Ceramics

Cell migration is an essential bioactive ceramics property and critical for bone induction, clinical application, and mechanism research. Standardized cell migration detection methods have many limitations, including a lack of dynamic fluid circulation and the inability to simulate cell behavior in vivo. Microfluidic chip technology, which mimics the human microenvironment and provides controlled dynamic fluid cycling, has the potential to solve these questions and generate reliable models of cell migration in vitro. In this study, a microfluidic chip is reconstructed to integrate the bioactive ceramic into the microfluidic chip structure to constitute a ceramic microbridge microfluidic chip system. Migration differences in the chip system are measured. By combining conventional detection methods with new biotechnology to analyze the causes of cell migration differences, it is found that the concentration gradients of ions and proteins adsorbed on the microbridge materials are directly related to the occurrence of cell migration behavior, which is consistent with previous reports and demonstrates the effectiveness of the microfluidic chip model. This model provides in vivo environment simulation and controllability of input and output conditions superior to standardized cell migration detection methods. The microfluidic chip system provides a new approach to studying and evaluating bioactive ceramics.

Recent Advances in Bioengineering Bone Revascularization Based on Composite Materials Comprising Hydroxyapatite

The natural healing process of bone is impaired in the presence of tumors, trauma, or inflammation, necessitating external assistance for bone regeneration. The limitations of autologous/allogeneic bone grafting are still being discovered as research progresses. Bone tissue engineering (BTE) is now a crucial component of treating bone injuries and actively works to promote vascularization, a crucial stage in bone repair. A biomaterial with hydroxyapatite (HA), which resembles the mineral makeup of invertebrate bones and teeth, has demonstrated high osteoconductivity, bioactivity, and biocompatibility. However, due to its brittleness and porosity, which restrict its application, scientists have been prompted to explore ways to improve its properties by mixing it with other materials, modifying its structural composition, improving fabrication techniques and growth factor loading, and co-cultivating bone regrowth cells to stimulate vascularization. This review scrutinizes the latest five-year research on HA composite studies aimed at amplifying vascularization in bone regeneration.

Differentiation of Bone Mesenchymal Stem Cells Into Vascular Endothelial Cell-Like Cells Using Functionalized Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are a promising bioactive scaffold for bone regeneration because of their superior mechanical and biological properties. Vascularization is crucial in bone tissue engineering, and insufficient vascularization is a long-standing problem in tissue-engineered scaffolds. However, the effect of CNTs on vascularization is still minimal. In the current study, pristine single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) were purified to prepare different ratios of SWNTs/EDC composites, and their surface morphology and physicochemical properties of SWNTs/EDC were studied. Furthermore, the effect of SWNTs/EDC on vascularization was investigated by inducing the differentiation of bone mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) into vascular endothelial cell-like cells (VEC-like cells). Results showed that SWNTs/EDC composite was successfully prepared, and EDC was embedded in the SWNTs matrix and uniformly distributed throughout the composites. The AFM, FTIR spectra, and Raman results confirmed the formation of SWNTs/EDC composites. Besides, the surface topography of the SWNTs/EDC composites presents a rough surface, which may positively affect cell function. In vitro cell culture revealed that SWNTs and SWNTs/EDC composites exhibited excellent biocompatibility and bioactivity. The SWNTs/EDC composite at mass/volume ratios 1:10 had the best enhancement of proliferation and differentiation of BMSCs. Moreover, after culture with SWNTs/EDC composite, approximately 78.3% ± 4.2% of cultured cells are double-positive for FITC-UEA-1 and DiI-Ac-LDL double staining. Additionally, the RNA expression of representative endothelial cell markers VEGF, VEGF-R2, CD31, and vWF in the SWNTs/EDC composite group was significantly higher than those in the control and SWNTs group. With the limitation of our study, the results suggested that SWNTs/EDC composite can promote BMSCs differentiation into VEC-like cells and positively affect angiogenesis and bone regeneration.

“Invisible” orthodontics by polymeric “clear” aligners molded on 3D-printed personalized dental models

The malalignment of teeth is treated classically by metal braces with alloy wires, which has an unfavorable influence on the patients appearance during the treatment. With the development of digitization, computer simulation and three-dimensional (3D) printing technology, herein, a modern treatment was tried using clear polymeric aligners, which were fabricated by molding polyurethane films via thermoforming on the 3D-printed personalized dental models. The key parameters of photocurable 3D printing of dental models and the mechanical properties of the clear aligner film material were examined. The precision of a 3D-printed dental model mainly relied on characteristics of photocurable resin, the resolution of light source and the exposure condition, which determined the eventual shape of the molded clear aligner and thus the orthodontic treatment efficacy. The biocompatibility of the polyurethane film material was confirmed through cytotoxicity and hemolysis tests in vitro. Following a series of 3D-printed personalized dental models and finite element analysis to predict and plan the fabrication and orthodontic processes, corresponding clear aligners were fabricated and applied in animal experiments, which proved the efficacy and biocompatibility in vivo. Clinical treatments of 120 orthodontic cases were finally carried out with success, which highlights the advantage of the clear aligners as an esthetic, compatible and efficient appliance.

Optimal regenerative repair of large segmental bone defect in a goat model with osteoinductive calcium phosphate bioceramic implants

So far, how to achieve the optimal regenerative repair of large load-bearing bone defects using artificial bone grafts is a huge challenge in clinic. In this study, a strategy of combining osteoinductive biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) bioceramic scaffolds with intramedullary nail fixation for creating stable osteogenic microenvironment was applied to repair large segmental bone defects (3.0 cm in length) in goat femur model. The material characterization results showed that the BCP scaffold had the initial compressive strength of over 2.0 MPa, and total porosity of 84%. The cell culture experiments demonstrated that the scaffold had the excellent ability to promote the proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of rat bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs). The in vivo results showed that the intramedullary nail fixation maintained the initial stability and structural integrity of the implants at early stage, promoting the osteogenic process both guided and induced by the BCP scaffolds. At 9 months postoperatively, good integration between the implants and host bone was observed, and a large amount of newborn bones formed, accompanying with the degradation of the material. At 18 months postoperatively, almost the complete new bone substitution in the defect area was achieved. The maximum bending strength of the repaired bone defects reached to the 100% of normal femur at 18 months post-surgery. Our results demonstrated the good potential of osteoinductive BCP bioceramics in the regenerative repair of large load-bearing bone defects. The current study could provide an effective method to treat the clinical large segmental bone defects.

Preliminary studies of constructing a tissue-engineered lamellar corneal graft by culturing mesenchymal stem cells onto decellularized corneal matrix

AIM

To construct a competent corneal lamellar substitute in order to alleviate the shortage of human corneal donor.

METHODS

Rabbit mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) were isolated from bone marrow and identified by flow cytometric, osteogenic and adipogenic induction. Xenogenic decellularized corneal matrix (XDCM) was generated from dog corneas. MSCs were seeded and cultured on XDCM to construct the tissue-engineered cornea. Post-transplantation biocompatibility of engineered corneal graft were tested by animal experiment. Rabbits were divided into two groups then underwent lamellar keratoplasty (LK) with different corneal grafts: 1) XDCM group (n=5): XDCM; 2) XDCM-MSCs groups (n=4): tissue-engineered cornea made up with XDCM and MSCs. The ocular surface recovery procedure was observed while corneal transparency, neovascularization and epithelium defection were measured and compared. In vivo on focal exam was performed 3mo postoperatively.

RESULTS

Rabbit MSCs were isolated and identified. Flow cytometry demonstrated isolated cells were CD90 positive and CD34, CD45 negative. Osteogenic and adipogenic induction verified their multipotent abilities. MSC-XDCM grafts were constructed and observed. In vivo transplantation showed the neovascularization in XDCM-MSC group was much less than that in XDCM group postoperatively. Post-transplant 3-month confocal test showed less nerve regeneration and bigger cell-absent area in XDCM-MSC group.

CONCLUSION

This study present a novel corneal tissue-engineered graft that could reduce post-operatively neovascularization and remain transparency, meanwhile shows that co-transplantation of MSCs may help increase corneal transplantation successful rate and enlarge the source range of corneal substitute to overcome cornea donor shortage.

A comparative study of autogenous, allograft and artificial bone substitutes on bone regeneration and immunotoxicity in rat femur defect model

Repair and reconstruction of large bone defect were often difficult, and bone substitute materials, including autogenous bone, allogenic bone and artificial bone, were common treatment strategies. The key to elucidate the clinical effect of these bone repair materials was to study their osteogenic capacity and immunotoxicological compatibility. In this paper, the mechanical properties, micro-CT imaging analysis, digital image analysis and histological slice analysis of the three bone grafts were investigated and compared after different time points of implantation in rat femur defect model. Autogenous bone and biphasic calcium phosphate particular artificial bone containing 61.4% HA and 38.6% β-tricalcium phosphate with 61.64% porosity and 0.8617 ± 0.0068 g/cm³ density (d ≤ 2 mm) had similar and strong bone repair ability, but autogenous bone implant materials caused greater secondary damage to experimental animals; allogenic bone exhibited poor bone defect repair ability. At the early stage of implantation, the immunological indexes such as Immunoglobulin G, Immunoglobulin M concentration and CD4 cells' population of allogenic bone significantly increased in compared with those of autologous bone and artificial bone. Although the repair process of artificial bone was relatively inefficient than autologous bone graft, the low immunotoxicological indexes and acceptable therapeutic effects endowed it as an excellent alternative material to solve the problems with insufficient source and secondary trauma of autogenous bone.

Osteoporotic Goat Spine Implantation Study Using a Synthetic, Resorbable Ca/P/S-Based Bone Substitute

One primary purpose of the present study is to clarify whether the highly porous, resorbable Ca/P/S-based bone substitute used in this study would still induce an osteoporotic bone when implanted into the osteoporotic vertebral defects of ovariectomized (OVX) goats, or the newly-grown bone would expectantly be rather healthy bone. The bone substitute material used for the study is a synthetic, 100% inorganic, highly porous and fast-resorbable Ca/P/S-based material (Ezechbone^® Granule CBS-400). The results show that the OVX procedure along with a low calcium diet and breeding away from light can successfully induce osteoporosis in the present female experimental goats. The histological examination reveals a newly-formed trabecular bone network within the surgically-created defect of the CBS-400-implanted (OVX_IP) goat. This new trabecular bone network in the OVX_IP goat appears much denser than the OVX goat and comparable to the healthy control goat. Histomorphometry show that, among all the experimental goats, the OVX_IP goat has the highest trabecular thickness and lowest trabecular bone packet prevalence. The differences in trabecular plate separation, trabecular number and trabecular bone tissue area ratio between the OVX_IP goat and the control goat are not significant, indicating that the trabecular bone architecture of the OVX_IP goat has substantially recovered to the normal level in about 6 months after implantation without signs of osteoporosis-related delay in the bone maturing process. The quick and nicely recovered trabecular architecture parameters observed in the OVX_IP goat indicate that the present Ca/P/S-based bone substitute material has a high potential to treat osteoporotic fractures.

Physical/Chemical Properties and Resorption Behavior of a Newly Developed Ca/P/S-Based Bone Substitute Material

Properly regulating the resorption rate of a resorbable bone implant has long been a great challenge. This study investigates a series of physical/chemical properties, biocompatibility and the behavior of implant resorption and new bone formation of a newly developed Ca/P/S-based bone substitute material (Ezechbone^® Granule CBS-400). Experimental results show that CBS-400 is comprised majorly of HA and CSD, with a Ca/P/S atomic ratio of 54.6/39.2/6.2. After immersion in Hank’s solution for 7 days, the overall morphology, shape and integrity of CBS-400 granules remain similar to that of non-immersed samples without showing apparent collapse or disintegration. With immersion time, the pH value continues to increase to 6.55 after 7 days, and 7.08 after 14 days. Cytotoxicity, intracutaneous reactivity and skin sensitization tests demonstrate the good biocompatibility features of CBS-400. Rabbit implantation/histological observations indicate that the implanted granules are intimately bonded to the surrounding new bone at all times. The implant is not merely a degradable bone substitute, but its resorption and the formation of new cancellous bone proceed at the substantially same pace. After implantation for 12 weeks, about 85% of the implant has been resorbed. The newly-formed cancellous bone ratio quickly increases to >40% at 4 weeks, followed by a bone remodeling process toward normal cancellous bone, wherein the new cancellous bone ratio gradually tapers down to about 30% after 12 weeks.

Effect of zinc substitution in hydroxyapatite coating on osteoblast and osteoclast differentiation under osteoblast/osteoclast co-culture

Zinc is an essential trace element required for bone remodelling process, but its role in such process remains to be elucidated. In particular, inconsistent results have been reported on the effect of Zn on osteoclastic responses, and supplement of receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand (RANKL) factors has been commonly adopted. Co-culture is a suitable approach to elucidating the role of Zn in bone remodelling process, by better imitating the cellular environment as the presence of osteoblasts plays critical role in modulating osteoclastic functions. In this study, zinc-substituted HA coatings have been deposited using a liquid precursor plasma spraying process at two different concentrations (1, 2 wt.%). The effect of zinc substitution on osteoblastic and osteoclastic differentiation has been studied in vitro. In particular, a cultivation regime was designed to first induce osteoblastic differentiation of rat bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) for 14 days, and then induce osteoclastic differentiation of osteoclast-like precursor RAW 264.7 cells through the aid of the osteoblasts formed for additional 14 days, in the absence of the external addition of RANKL. The results showed that Zn substitution moderately promoted the BMSC differentiation into the osteoblasts and reduced the osteoclastic activity in early time (1 day co-culture). However, promotion of the osteoclastic activity were observed at later stages, as indicated by the significantly enhanced expressions of trap5b and IL-1 (8- and 15-day co-culture) and moderate stimulation of the nucleus integration and formation of the multinucleated cells (14-day co-culture). Such stimulating effect of the osteoclastic activity was absent under mono-culture of RAW 264.7 cell, with simple RANKL supplementation. The results suggest that both the zinc and the presence of MSC/osteoblast play profound and highly interacted roles on osteoclast differentiation and activity, which is critical in modulating the bone remodelling process.

Positive role of calcium phosphate ceramics regulated inflammation in the osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells

Recently, researches have confirmed the crucial role of inflammatory response in Ca-P ceramic-induced osteogenesis, however, the underlying mechanism has not yet been fully understood. In this study, BCP and β-TCP ceramics were used as material models to investigate the effect of physicochemical properties on inflammatory response in vitro. The results showed that BCP and β-TCP could support macrophages attachment, proliferation, and spreading favorably, as well as promote gene expressions of inflammatory related cytokines (IL-1, IL-6, MCP-1, and TNF-α) and growth factors (TGF-β, FGF, PDGF, VEGF, IGF, and EGF). BCP showed a facilitating function on the gene expressions earlier than β-TCP. Further coculture experiments performed in vitro demonstrated that the CMs containing various increased cytokines for macrophages pre-culture could significantly promote MSCs osteogenic differentiation, which was confirmed by the gene expressions of osteogenic specific markers and the intracellular OCN product accumulation under the stimulation of BCP and β-TCP ceramics. Further evidence was found from the formation of mineralized nodules in BCM and TCM. In addition, this study showed a concise relationship between Ca-P ceramic induced inflammation and its osteoinductivity that the increased cytokines and growth factors from macrophages could promote MSCs osteogenic differentiation.

Pre-screening the intrinsic angiogenic capacity of biomaterials in an optimised ex ovo chorioallantoic membrane model

Biomaterial development for clinical applications is currently on the rise. This necessitates adequate in vitro testing, where the structure and composition of biomaterials must be specifically tailored to withstand in situ repair and regeneration responses for a successful clinical outcome. The chorioallantoic membrane of chicken embryos has been previously used to study angiogenesis, a prerequisite for most tissue repair and regeneration. In this study, we report an optimised ex ovo method using a glass-cling film set-up that yields increased embryo survival rates and has an improved protocol for harvesting biomaterials. Furthermore, we used this method to examine the intrinsic angiogenic capacity of a variety of biomaterials categorised as natural, synthetic, natural/synthetic and natural/natural composites with varying porosities. We detected significant differences in biomaterials' angiogenesis with natural polymers and polymers with a high overall porosity showing a greater vascularisation compared to synthetic polymers. Therefore, our proposed ex ovo chorioallantoic membrane method can be effectively used to pre-screen biomaterials intended for clinical application.

[Vascular endothelial growth factor/polylactide-polyethyleneglycol-polylactic acid copolymer/basic fibroblast growth factor mixed microcapsules in promoting angiogenic differentiation of rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells in vitro]

Objective

To observe the effect of vascular endothelial growth factor/polylactide-polyethyleneglycol-polylactic acid copolymer/basic fibroblast growth factor (VEGF/PELA/bFGF) mixed microcapsules in promoting the angiogenic differentiation of rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) in vitro.

Methods

The BMSCs were isolated by the method of whole bone marrow adherent, and sub-cultured. The passage 3 BMSCs were identified by Wright-Giemsa staining and flow cytometry, and used for subsequent experiments. VEGF/PELA/bFGF (group A), PELA/bFGF (group B), VEGF/PELA (group C), and PELA (group D) microcapsules were prepared. The biodegradable ability and cytotoxicity of PELA microcapsule were determined，and the slow-released ability of VEGF/PELA/bFGF mixed microcapsules was measured. The passage 3 BMSCs were co-cultured with the extracts of groups A, B, C, and D, separately. At 1, 3, 7, 14, and 20 days after being cultured, the morphological changes of induced BMSCs were recorded. At 21 days, the induced BMSCs were tested for DiI-labeled acetylated low density lipoprotein (Dil-ac-LDL) and FITC-labeled ulex europaeus agglutinin I (FITC-UEA-I) uptake ability. The tube-forming ability of the induced cells on Matrigel was also verified. The differences of the vascularize indexes in nodes, master junctions, master segments, and tot.master segments length in 4 groups were summarized and analyzed.

Results

The isolated and cultured cells were identified as BMSCs. The degradation time of PELA was more than 20 days. There was no significant effect on cell viability under co-culture conditions. At 20 days, the cumulative release of VEGF in the mixed microcapsules exceeded 95%, and the quantity of bFGF exceeded 80%. The morphology of cells in groups A, B, and C were changed. The cells in groups A and B showed the typical change of cobble-stone morphology. The numbers of double fluorescent labeled cells observed by fluorescence microscope were the most in group A, and decreases from group B and group C, with the lowest in group D. The cells in groups A and B formed a grid-like structure on Matrigel. Quantitative analysis showed that the differences in the number of nodes, master junctions, master segments, and tot.master segments length between groups A, B and groups C, D were significant ( P<0.05). The number of nodes and the tot.master segments length of group A were more than those of group B ( P<0.05). There was no significant differences in the number of master junctions and master segments between group A and group B ( P>0.05).

Conclusion

VEGF/PELA/bFGF mixed microcapsules have significantly ability to promote the angiogenic differentiation of rat BMSCs in vitro.

Application of osteoinductive calcium phosphate ceramics in children's endoscopic neurosurgery: report of five cases

This work aimed at investigating the possibility and effectiveness of osteoinductive calcium phosphate (CaP) ceramics to close the drilled skull holes and prevent the postoperative cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaking in children’s endoscopic neurosurgery. Five children patients (four boys and one girl, 3- to 8-years old) underwent the surgery, in which the endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) was operated in four cases of hydrocephalus, and biopsy and ETV were both performed in one case of pineal tumor. The drilled skull holes were filled with the commercial osteoinductive CaP ceramics. The patients were followed up by CT scan at 1, 7 days, 3 and 6 months postoperatively. All the five cases were successful, and the holes were closed well after filled with the ceramics. The follow-up survey showed that no CSF leaking or rejection reaction was found. The CT scan indicated that the drilled holes began healing at 7 days postoperatively, and a relatively complete healing happened at 6 months postoperatively. The excellent ability of the CaP ceramics to induce bone regeneration was also confirmed by repairing the skull defects in a monkey model. The results of μ-CT and histological analysis showed that a bony structure with irregular array occurred at the defect area, and the newly formed bone volume density reached 65.7%. In conclusion, the osteoinductive CaP ceramics could be an ideal material to treat the drilled skull holes in children’s endoscopic neurosurgery and prevent CSF leaking afterwards. However, further investigation with more cases and longer follow-up was required to evaluate the clinical effect.
