Achievements in workplace neutron dosimetry in the last decade: lessons learned from the EVIDOS project

DEVELOPMENT, CHARACTERIZATION AND TESTING OF A SIMPLIFIED BONNER SPHERE SYSTEM FOR RAPID NEUTRON FIELD CHARACTERIZATION

Personal neutron dosimetry requires workplace specific correction factors from detailed neutron field characterization. A Bonner sphere system (BSS) with a 3He proportional counter and a 3 inch an a 9 inch sphere was developed at SCK·CEN for rapid neutron field characterization. The BSS energy and angular responses were simulated with MCNPX and validated by irradiations with a thermal neutron beam at the Belgian Reactor 1 (BR1) and 252Cf and Am-Be sources at the SCK·CEN Laboratory for Nuclear Calibration (LNK). The BSS unfolding performance was tested using the FRUIT unfolding code for measurements of the scattered neutron field at the LNK. The unfolded spectra were in good agreement with MCNPX simulations.

EURADOS strategic research agenda: vision for dosimetry of ionising radiation

Since autumn 2012, the European Radiation Dosimetry Group (EURADOS) has been developing its Strategic Research Agenda (SRA), which is intended to contribute to the identification of future research needs in radiation dosimetry in Europe. The present article summarises-based on input from EURADOS Working Groups (WGs) and Voting Members-five visions in dosimetry and defines key issues in dosimetry research that are considered important for the next decades. The five visions include scientific developments required towards (a) updated fundamental dose concepts and quantities, (b) improved radiation risk estimates deduced from epidemiological cohorts, (c) efficient dose assessment for radiological emergencies, (d) integrated personalised dosimetry in medical applications and (e) improved radiation protection of workers and the public. The SRA of EURADOS will be used as a guideline for future activities of the EURADOS WGs. Fluence to Hp(3) conversion coefficients for neutrons from thermal to 15 MeV

The recent statement on tissue reactions issued by the International Commission on Radiological Protection in April 2011 recommends a very significant reduction in the equivalent dose annual limit for the eye lens from 150 to 20 mSv y(-1); this has stimulated a lot of interest in eye lens dosimetry in the radiation protection community. Until now no conversion coefficients were available for the operational quantity Hp(3) for neutrons. The scope of the present work was to extend previous evaluations of H*(10) and Hp(10) performed at the PTB in 1995 to provide also Hp(3) data for neutrons. The present work is also intended to complete the studies carried out on photons during the last 4 y within the European Union-funded ORAMED (optimisation of radiation protection for medical staff) project.

The physics of solid-state neutron detector materials and geometries

Detection of neutrons, at high total efficiency, with greater resolution in kinetic energy, time and/or real-space position, is fundamental to the advance of subfields within nuclear medicine, high-energy physics, non-proliferation of special nuclear materials, astrophysics, structural biology and chemistry, magnetism and nuclear energy. Clever indirect-conversion geometries, interaction/transport calculations and modern processing methods for silicon and gallium arsenide allow for the realization of moderate- to high-efficiency neutron detectors as a result of low defect concentrations, tuned reaction product ranges, enhanced effective omnidirectional cross sections and reduced electron-hole pair recombination from more physically abrupt and electronically engineered interfaces. Conversely, semiconductors with high neutron cross sections and unique transduction mechanisms capable of achieving very high total efficiency are gaining greater recognition despite the relative immaturity of their growth, lithographic processing and electronic structure understanding. This review focuses on advances and challenges in charged-particle-based device geometries, materials and associated mechanisms for direct and indirect transduction of thermal to fast neutrons within the context of application. Calorimetry- and radioluminescence-based intermediate processes in the solid state are not included.

Neutron irradiation affects the expression of genes involved in the response to auxin, senescence and oxidative stress in Arabidopsis

We report, in Arabidopsis thaliana plants, the effect of neutron irradiation on the transcription of a set of genes belonging to different physiological groups: auxin action, senescence, oxidative stress, and some aspects of photosynthesis. The results indicated that, in the wild-types, the effect on the ARF1, ARF2, and 19 genes was of down-regulation, whereas of the tested AUX/IAA only AUX/IAA7 showed up-regulation. Different results were obtained as regards the irradiation of the auxin transport mutants aux1 and eir1, because in these cases the ARF genes were up-regulated, whereas AUX/IAA7 was down-regulated in eir1. On the other hand, the senescence activated genes SAG12 and SAG13, and those connected to oxidative stress were up-regulated in the wild-type, but down-regulated in aux1. The gene CAB1, connected to photosynthesis, was also down-regulated in the wild-type, but up-regulated in aux1. Gene expression recovered in many cases almost to the initial condition in a time lapse of 24 hours, even though some effect persisted for a longer time. In particular, the state of juvenility of arf2 was extended by irradiation, whereas, in all the other cases, senescence was accelerated. The research indicates that through mutant selection or genetic engineering a true possibility exists of producing organism more suitable for life in space.
