Abstract
BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS Psychiatric comorbidities suggest that symptoms overlap across different diagnoses; the transdiagnostic network approach is valuable for studying psychopathology. Childhood trauma is a common transdiagnostic risk factor for psychiatric disorders, but the complex relationship between childhood trauma and psychopathology has seldom been investigated using a large cross-sectional transdiagnostic sample. STUDY DESIGN This study recruited 869 patients with different diagnoses, including 418 schizophrenia, 215 bipolar disorder, and 236 major depressive disorder. Participants completed psychiatric interviews and self-report questionnaires. We constructed dimension- and item-level Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator-based (LASSO) networks to explore the relationship between childhood trauma, psychopathology, and duration of illness. Moreover, we constructed directed acyclic graphs (DAGs) to tentatively clarify the potential directions of associations among these variables. Network Comparison Tests (NCTs) were conducted for different diagnostic groups and gender-stratified groups. STUDY RESULTS The transdiagnostic LASSO networks showed that different types of childhood trauma exerted distinct impacts on various psychopathological dimensions. Emotional abuse was linked to depressive symptoms, physical abuse to excited symptoms, sexual abuse to positive and disorganized symptoms, emotional neglect to depressive symptoms and motivation and pleasure (MAP) deficits factor of negative symptoms, and physical neglect to MAP factor. The DAG findings generally concurred with the LASSO network. The NCT showed comparable networks. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that childhood trauma is significantly associated with the development of psychopathology across different diagnostic groups. The affective pathway model suggests that early identification and tailored interventions would be needed for people with a history of childhood trauma.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS Among individuals living with psychotic disorders, social impairment is common, debilitating, and challenging to treat. While the roots of this impairment are undoubtedly complex, converging lines of evidence suggest that social motivation and pleasure (MAP) deficits play a central role. Yet most neuroimaging studies have focused on monetary rewards, precluding decisive inferences. STUDY DESIGN Here we leveraged parallel social and monetary incentive delay functional magnetic resonance imaging paradigms to test whether blunted reactivity to social incentives in the ventral striatum-a key component of the distributed neural circuit mediating appetitive motivation and hedonic pleasure-is associated with more severe MAP symptoms in a transdiagnostic adult sample enriched for psychosis. To maximize ecological validity and translational relevance, we capitalized on naturalistic audiovisual clips of an established social partner expressing positive feedback. STUDY RESULTS Although both paradigms robustly engaged the ventral striatum, only reactivity to social incentives was associated with clinician-rated MAP deficits. This association remained significant when controlling for other symptoms, binary diagnostic status, or striatal reactivity to monetary incentives. Follow-up analyses suggested that this association predominantly reflects diminished activation during the presentation of social reward. CONCLUSIONS These observations provide a neurobiologically grounded framework for conceptualizing the social-anhedonia symptoms and social impairments that characterize many individuals living with psychotic disorders and underscore the need to develop targeted intervention strategies.

Abstract
Recent empirical findings suggest that negative symptoms are not limited to schizophrenia (SCZ) but also present in major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD) patients. Although SCZ patients generally showed a latent structure comprising the motivation and pleasure (MAP) and expression (EXP) factors, it remains unclear whether the same latent structure exists in MDD and BD patients. We administered the Clinical Assessment Interview for Negative Symptoms (CAINS) and the Brief Negative Symptom Scale (BNSS) to 179 MDD patients and 152 BD patients. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was conducted to examine the one-factor model, the two-factor model of the MAP and the EXP domain, the five-factor model of anhedonia, avolition, asociality, alogia, and blunted affect, and the hierarchical model comprising the first-order five-factor, and the second-order two-factor (MAP and EXP factors). We further examined the correlations between demographics and the negative symptom dimensions found in the best factor model. The CFA showed that, when the CAINS and the BNSS were combined together, the two-factor model of MAP and EXP provided the best model fit than other competing models, in the MDD alone sample, BD alone sample, and the combined clinical sample. The two-factor model of the MAP and EXP appears to be a stable, transdiagnostic latent structure of negative symptoms across BD and MDD. Clarifying negative symptoms in MDD and BD can facilitate future research on the underlying neural mechanisms of the MAP and EXP dimensions.

Abstract
In psychotic disorders, motivation and pleasure (MAP) deficits are associated with decreased affiliation and heightened functional impairment. We leveraged a transdiagnostic sample enriched for psychosis and a multi-method approach to test the hypothesis that MAP deficits undermine the stress-buffering benefits of affiliation. Participants completed the Social Affiliation Enhancement Task (SAET) to cultivate affiliation with an experimental partner. Although the SAET increased perceived affiliation and mood, individuals with greater negative symptoms derived smaller emotional benefits from the partners, as indexed by self-report and facial behavior. We then used the Handholding fMRI paradigm, which combines threat-anticipation with affiliative physical contact, to determine whether MAP deficits undermine the social regulation of distress. Individuals with greater MAP deficits showed diminished neural 'benefits'-reduced dampening of threat-elicited activation-from affiliative touch in key frontoparietal nodes of the Dorsal Attention Network. In short, MAP symptoms disrupt the emotional and neuroregulatory benefits of affiliation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recent operational criteria for treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS) recognized positive and negative symptoms. TRS patients may have heterogeneity in negative symptoms, but empirical data were lacking. We aimed to characterize TRS patients based on negative symptoms using cluster analysis, and to examine between-cluster differences in social functioning. METHODS We administered the Clinical Assessment Interview of Negative symptoms (CAINS), Brief Negative Symptom Scale (BNSS), the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) and the Social and Occupational Functional Assessment (SOFAS to 126 TRS outpatients. All patients also completed the Temporal Experience of Pleasure Scale (TEPS), the Emotion Expressivity Scale (EES), and the Social Functional Scale (SFS). A two-stage hierarchical cluster analysis was performed with the CAINS, TEPS and EES as clustering variables. We validated the clusters using ANOVAs to compare group differences in the BNSS, PANSS, SOFAS and SFS. RESULTS Clustering indices supported a 3-cluster solution. Clusters 1 (n = 46) and 3 (n = 16) exhibited higher CAINS scores than Cluster 2 (n = 64), and were negative-symptom TRS subtypes. Cluster 1 reported lower TEPS than Cluster 3; but Cluster 3 reported lower EES than Cluster 1. Upon validation, Clusters 1 and 3 exhibited higher BNSS scores than Cluster 2, but only Cluster 1 exhibited lower SOFAS and higher PANSS general symptoms than Cluster 2. Both Clusters 1 and 3 had higher self-report functioning than Cluster 2. CONCLUSION We provided evidence for heterogeneity of negative symptoms in TRS. Negative symptoms can characterize TRS patients and predict functional outcome.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS Negative symptoms are very important for the overall loss of functioning observed in patients with schizophrenia. There is a need for valid tools to assess these symptoms. STUDY DESIGN We used the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments (COSMIN) systematic review guideline to evaluate the quality of the clinical assessment interview for negative symptoms (CAINS) as a clinician-rated outcome measurement (ClinROM). STUDY RESULTS The search strategy resulted in the retrieval of 13 articles, 11 of which were included in this evaluation. In terms of risk of bias, most articles reported on measures of internal consistency and construct validity, which were overall of good quality. Structural validity, reliability, measurement error, and cross-cultural validity were reported with less than optimum quality. There was a risk of bias in ClinROM development. According to the updated criteria of good measurement properties, structural validity, internal consistency, and reliability showed good results. In contrast, hypothesis testing was somewhat poorer. Results for cross-cultural validity were indeterminate. According to the updated GRADE approach from the COSMIN group the scale received a moderate grade. CONCLUSIONS The COSMIN standard allows a judgment of the CAINS as an instrument with the potential to be recommended for use, but which requires further research to assess its quality, in particular in the domains of content validity, internal consistency, and cross-cultural validity.

Abstract
Reward motivation in individuals with high levels of negative schizotypal traits (NS) has been found to be lower than that in their counterparts. But it is unclear that whether their reward motivation adaptively changes with external effort-reward ratio, and what resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) is associated with this change. Thirty-five individuals with high levels of NS and 44 individuals with low levels of NS were recruited. A 3T resting-state functional brain scan and a novel reward motivation adaptation behavioural task were administrated in all participants. The behavioural task was manipulated with three conditions (effort > reward condition vs. effort < reward condition vs. effort = reward condition). Under each condition were rated 'wanting' and 'liking' for rewards. The seed-based voxel-wise rsFC analysis was conducted to explore the rsFCs associated with the 'wanting' and 'liking' ratings in individuals with high levels of NS. 'Wanting' and 'liking' ratings of individuals with high levels of NS significantly declined in the effort > reward condition but did not rebound as high as their counterparts in the effort < reward condition. The rsFCs in NS group associated with these ratings were altered. The altered rsFCs in NS group involved regions in the prefrontal lobe, dopaminergic brain regions (ventral tegmental area, substantia nigra), hippocampus, thalamus and cerebellum. Individuals with high levels of NS manifested their reward motivation adaptation impairment as a failure of adjustment adaptively during effort-reward imbalance condition and altered rsFCs in prefrontal, dopaminergic and other brain regions.

Abstract
A recent environmental theory of negative symptoms posits that environmental contexts (e.g., location, social partner) play a significant-yet often unaccounted for-role in negative symptoms of schizophrenia (SZ). "Gold-standard" clinical rating scales offer limited precision for evaluating how contexts impact symptoms. To overcome some of these limitations, Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) was used to determine whether there were state fluctuations in experiential negative symptoms (anhedonia, avolition, and asociality) in SZ across contexts (locations, activities, social interaction partner, social interaction method). Outpatients with SZ (n = 52) and healthy controls (CN: n = 55) completed 8 daily EMA surveys for 6 days assessing negative symptom domains (anhedonia, avolition, and asociality) and contexts. Multilevel modeling demonstrated that negative symptoms varied across location, activity, social interaction partner, and social interaction method. For the majority of contexts, SZ and CN did not report significantly different levels of negative symptoms, with SZ only reporting higher negative symptoms than CN while eating, resting, interacting with a significant other, or being at home. Further, there were several contexts where negative symptoms were similarly reduced (e.g., recreation, most social interactions) or elevated (e.g., using the computer, working, running errands) in each group. Results demonstrate that experiential negative symptoms dynamically change across contexts in SZ. Some contexts may "normalize" experiential negative symptoms in SZ, while other contexts, notably some used to promote functional recovery, may increase experiential negative symptoms.

Abstract
Negative symptoms are complex psychopathology. Although evidence generally supported the NIMH five consensus domains, research seldom examined measurement invariance of this model, and domain-specific correspondence across multiple scales. This study aimed to examine the interrelationship between negative symptom domains captured by different rating scales, and to examine the domain-specific correspondence across multiple scales. We administered the Brief Negative Symptom Scale (BNSS), the Self-evaluation of Negative Symptoms (SNS), and the Scale for Assessment of Negative Symptoms (SANS) to 204 individuals with schizophrenia. We used network analysis to examine the interrelationship between negative symptom domains. Besides regularized partial correlation network, we estimated bridge centrality indices to investigate domain-specific correspondence, while taking each scale as an independent community. The regularized partial correlation network showed that the SNS nodes clustered together, whereas the SANS and the BNSS nodes intermingled together. The SANS attention domain lied at the periphery of the network according to the Fruchterman-Reingold algorithm. The SANS anhedonia-asociality (strength = 1.48; EI = 1.48) and the SANS affective flattening (strength = 1.06; EI = 1.06) had the highest node strength and EI. Moreover, the five nodes of the BNSS bridged the nodes of the SANS and the SNS. BNSS blunted affect (strength = 0.76; EI = 0.76) and SANS anhedonia-asociality (strength = 0.76; EI = 0.74) showed the highest bridge strength and bridge EI. The BNSS captures negative symptoms and bridges the symptom domains measured by the SANS and the SNS. The three scales showed domain-specific correspondence.

Abstract
The schizotypy construct is useful for studying the effects of environmental stress on development of subclinical negative symptoms. The relationship among self-report motivation, effort-reward imbalance (ERI), and schizotypal features has seldom been studied. We aimed to examine the possible moderation effect of schizotypal traits on ERI and reward motivation. Eight-hundred-and-forty-three college students were recruited online to complete a set of self-reported measures capturing schizotypal traits, effort-reward imbalance and reward motivation, namely the Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire (SPQ), the Effort-Reward Imbalance-School Version Questionnaire (C-ERI-S) and the Motivation and Pleasure Scale-Self Report (MAP-SR). We conducted multiple linear regression to construct models to investigate the moderating effects of schizotypal traits on the relationship between ERI and reward motivation. Stressful ERI situation predicted the reduction of reward motivation. Negative schizotypal traits showed a significant negative moderating effect on the relationship between ERI and reward motivation, while positive and disorganized schizotypal traits had significant positive moderating effects. Schizotypal traits subtypes differently moderate the relationship between ERI and reward motivation. Only negative schizotypal traits and stressful ERI situation together have negative impact on reward motivation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Emotion-behaviour decoupling refers to the failure to translate emotion into motivated behaviour, and is a putative marker for schizophrenia. The heterogeneity of experiential pleasure and emotion expressivity deficits has been reported in schizophrenia patients. These three constructs are believed to contribute to negative symptoms, but very few studies have examined their predictive ability for clinical and functional outcome of schizophrenia. This study aimed to clarify whether these three constructs influence clinical and functional outcome of schizophrenia. METHOD At baseline, 127 first-episode schizophrenia patients completed a behavioural paradigm for emotion-behaviour decoupling, and self-report scales for experiential pleasure and emotion expressivity deficits. Cluster-analysis was applied to characterize schizophrenia subgroups based on these three constructs. At end-point (mean follow-up = 5.37 years, SD = 1.03 years), 85 schizophrenia patients were reassessed using the Clinical Assessment Interview for Negative Symptoms (CAINS) and a clinician-rated social functioning scale. RESULTS Cluster 1 (n = 74) did not show emotion-behaviour decoupling, and had intact experiential pleasure and emotion expressivity. Cluster 2 (n = 29) showed emotion-behaviour decoupling and experiential pleasure deficits. Cluster 3 (n = 24) showed emotion expressivity deficits. At endpoint, the three clusters differed significantly in CAINS MAP factor (p = 0.016) and social functioning (p = 0.019), but not CAINS EXP factor. Specifically, Cluster 2 (n = 18) showed more severe negative symptoms of CAINS MAP factor (p = 0.046) and poorer social functioning (p = 0.022) than Cluster 1 (n = 49). Cluster 3 (n = 18) did not differ from Cluster 1 and Cluster 2 in negative symptoms and social functioning. DISCUSSION Emotion-behaviour decoupling and experiential pleasure deficits predicted clinical and functional outcome of schizophrenia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Negative symptoms are core symptom of schizophrenia, and many previous research studied the latent structure of negative symptoms based on a single measurement scale. Applying two second-generation negative symptom scales to the same sample can address measurement-invariance of latent structure. METHODS Three-hundred-and-five schizophrenia patients were assessed using the CAINS and the BNSS. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) tested four competing factor-models: (1) a 1-factor model; (2) a 2-factor model comprising the motivation and pleasure (MAP) domain and the diminished expression (EXP) domain; (3) a 5-factor model comprising anhedonia, avolition, asociality, blunted affect and alogia; (4) a hierarchical model comprising the "first-order" 5-domain factors and the "second-order" MAP & EXP factors. RESULTS The CFA results for the data of the CAINS showed that the 2-factor model had the best data fit over the other competing models. The CFA using the BNSS data in the same sample also supported the superiority of the 2-factor model. Lastly, after combining the items of the BNSS and CAINS together in the same sample for CFA, the 2-factor model prevailed over the other competing models. CONCLUSIONS The 2-factor model appears to be measurement-invariant latent structure of negative symptoms. The novel method of combining the items of the CAINS and BNSS might have circumvented the possible imperfect construct of a single scale. Our findings support the MAP and EXP factors as the latent structure for negative symptoms.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Negative symptoms in schizophrenia are associated with poor response to available treatments, poor quality of life, and functional outcome. Therefore, they represent a substantial burden for people with schizophrenia, their families, and health-care systems. AREAS COVERED In this manuscript, we will provide an update on the conceptualization, assessment, and treatment of this complex psychopathological dimension of schizophrenia. EXPERT OPINION Despite the progress in the conceptualization of negative symptoms and in the development of state-of-the-art assessment instruments made in the last decades, these symptoms are still poorly recognized, and not always assessed in line with current conceptualization. Every effort should be made to disseminate the current knowledge on negative symptoms, on their assessment instruments and available treatments whose efficacy is supported by research evidence. Longitudinal studies should be promoted to evaluate the natural course of negative symptoms, improve our ability to identify the different sources of secondary negative symptoms, provide effective interventions, and target primary and persistent negative symptoms with innovative treatment strategies. Further research is needed to identify pathophysiological mechanisms of primary negative symptoms and foster the development of new treatments.

This network analysis study examined the network structure and interrelationship between negative symptoms (at the "symptom-dimension" and "symptom-item" levels), other psychopathology and social functioning in a sample of 269 patients with SCZ. The psychopathological symptoms were assessed using the Clinical Assessment Interview for Negative Symptoms (CAINS) and the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). Social functioning was evaluated using the Social and Occupational Functioning Assessment Scale (SOFAS). Centrality indices and relative importance of each node were estimated. The network structures between male and female participants were compared. Our resultant networks at both the "symptom-dimension" and the "symptom-item" levels suggested that the MAP factor/its individual items were closely related to social functioning in SCZ patients, after controlling for the complex interplay between other nodes. Relative importance analysis showed that MAP factor accounted for the largest proportion of variance of social functioning. This study is among the few which used network analysis and the CAINS to examine the interrelationship between negative symptoms and social functioning. Our findings supported the pivotal role of the MAP factor to determine SCZ patients' social functioning, and as a potential intervention target for improving functional outcomes of SCZ.

Abstract
Negative symptoms are commonly assessed via clinical rating scales; however, these measures have several inherent limitations that impact validity and utility for their use in clinical trials. Objective digital phenotyping measures that overcome some of these limitations are now available. The current study evaluated the validity of accelerometry (ACL), a passive digital phenotyping method that involves collecting data on the presence, vigor, and variability of movement. Outpatients with schizophrenia (SZ: n = 50) and demographically matched healthy controls (CN: n = 70) had ACL continuously recorded from a smartphone and smartband for 6 days. Active digital phenotyping assessments, including surveys related to activity context, were also collected via 8 daily surveys throughout the 6 day period. SZ participants had lower scores on phone ACL variables reflecting vigor and variability of movement compared to CN. ACL variables demonstrated convergent validity as indicated by significant correlations with active digital phenotyping self-reports of time spent in goal-directed activities and clinical ratings of negative symptoms. The discriminant validity of ACL was demonstrated by low correlations with clinical rating scale measures of positive, disorganized, and total symptoms. Collectively, findings suggest that ACL is a valid objective measure of negative symptoms that may complement traditional approaches to assessing the construct using clinical rating scales.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The Clinical Assessment Interview for Negative Symptoms (CAINS) is an interview-based instrument evaluating the existence and severity of negative symptoms in people diagnosed with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder. The aim of this study is to translate and validate a French version of the CAINS in a French sample of outpatients diagnosed with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder. METHODS In this study, we included 84 outpatients with a diagnosis of schizophrenia from the University Department of Adult Psychiatry in Montpellier, France. All participants were assessed for the severity of negative symptoms as well as level of depression. Psychometric properties of the French CAINS were investigated including its factor structure, internal consistency, and interrater and test-retest reliabilities. We also determined the discriminant and convergent validity. RESULTS Exploratory factor analysis and parallel analysis reproduced the two-factor model, and explained 43.55% of the total score variation with good internal consistency (Cronbach α of 0.87). Both interrater and test-retest reliabilities were high for the CAINS and its subscales (intraclass correlation coefficient range, 0.89-0.99). The standard errors of measurement and minimal detectable change were also investigated. Convergent validity of the CAINS was underpinned by correlations obtained with various measures of negative symptoms. Adequate discriminant validity was established by showing that the CAINS did not correlate with positive symptoms. CONCLUSION Overall, our results obtained were similar to those found in the original study of the CAINS. Structural analyses also replicated the two-factor model of the CAINS. Our results indicate that the French CAINS has robust psychometric properties and is a valid tool for evaluating negative symptoms in French-speaking individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia.

Abstract
Negative symptoms are a core dimension of schizophrenia and other psychoses that account for a large degree of the poor functional outcomes related to these disorders. Newer assessment scales for negative symptoms, such as the Clinical Assessment Interview for Negative Symptoms (CAINS), provide evidence for separate dimensions of motivational and pleasure (MAP) and expression (EXP) dimensions. This study was aimed at extending the analysis of the clinical, functional and cognitive correlates of CAINS dimensions in a sample of patients with psychotic disorders (n = 98) and 50 healthy controls.A psychopathological evaluation was conducted by using the Comprehensive Assessment of Symptoms and History (CASH). To assess the extrapyramidal signs, the UKU scale was used. Community functioning was evaluated by means of real-world and functional attainment measures. Additionally, a full neuropsychological test battery was administered. Pearson correlation and hierarchical multiple linear regression analyses were performed to identify the influencing and predictive factors associated with the CAINS dimensions.The MAP and EXP dimensions showed strong associations with the Scale for the Assessment of Negative Symptoms (SANS) items and were not significantly associated with extra-pyramidal or cognitive deficits. The MAP and EXP CAINS dimensions revealed good predictive validity for real-world functioning and functional attainment measures.These findings suggest that the CAINS scale endorses good convergent validity for the assessment of negative symptoms and is very useful in the prediction of psychosocial functioning. In addition, the CAINS dimensions might provide advantages over old assessment scales on disentangling the complex associations between negative symptoms and cognitive impairment.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Negative symptoms are associated with poor outcomes and functioning. Latent structure of negative symptoms is important for identifying potential intervention targets for novel treatments. Self-report instruments have been developed to measure negative symptoms. Previous findings on latent structure of negative symptoms are inconsistently and mainly rely on clinician-rated instruments. METHOD We aimed to explore the latent structure of the Self-Evaluation of Negative Symptoms Scale (SNS) in 204 clinically-stable outpatients with schizophrenia. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used to compare the competing models (i.e., one-factor, two-factor and five-factor models), and estimated goodness-of-fit indexes. Other clinician-rated scales for psychopathology and medication side-effects were also collected. RESULTS The CFA found the five-factor model performing best, with a comparative fit index (CFI) of > 0.95, a Tucker Lewis Index (TLI) of > 0.95, and a root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA) of < 0.06. The robust chi-square difference test for the weighted least squares with mean and variance adjusted estimation (WLSMV) also indicated a significant better fit for the five-factor model. DISCUSSION Our preliminary findings support a five-factor latent structure of self-report negative symptoms in schizophrenia patients. Further research in this area should utilize multiple clinician-rated and self-report measures, and recruit large and homogeneous samples with schizophrenia.

Abstract
Background During the last decades, a renewed interest for negative symptoms (NS) was brought about by the increased awareness that they interfere severely with real-life functioning, particularly when they are primary and persistent. Methods In this guidance paper, we provide a systematic review of the evidence and elaborate several recommendations for the conceptualization and assessment of NS in clinical trials and practice. Results Expert consensus and systematic reviews have provided guidance for the optimal assessment of primary and persistent negative symptoms; second-generation rating scales, which provide a better assessment of the experiential domains, are available; however, NS are still poorly assessed both in research and clinical settings. This European Psychiatric Association (EPA) guidance recommends the use of persistent negative symptoms (PNS) construct in the context of clinical trials and highlights the need for further efforts to make the definition of PNS consistent across studies in order to exclude as much as possible secondary negative symptoms. We also encourage clinicians to use second-generation scales, at least to complement first-generation ones. The EPA guidance further recommends the evidence-based exclusion of several items included in first-generation scales from any NS summary or factor score to improve NS measurement in research and clinical settings. Self-rated instruments are suggested to further complement observer-rated scales in NS assessment. Several recommendations are provided for the identification of secondary negative symptoms in clinical settings. Conclusions The dissemination of this guidance paper may promote the development of national guidelines on negative symptom assessment and ultimately improve the care of people with schizophrenia.

Abstract
Background Determining the best latent structure of negative symptoms in schizophrenia could benefit assessment tools, neurobiological research, and targeted interventions. However, no review systematically evaluated studies that assessed and validated latent models of negative symptoms. Objective To identify and evaluate existing latent structure models in the literature of negative symptoms and to determine the best model. Method Systematic search of MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Scopus on July 19, 2020, for confirmatory factor analysis models of negative symptoms in patients with schizophrenia. The available evidence was assessed through 2 sets of criteria: (1) study design quality—based on negative symptoms assessment and modeling strategy and (2) psychometric quality and model fit—based on fit indices and factor definition quality. Results In total, 22 studies (n = 17 086) from 9 countries were included. Studies differed greatly regarding symptom scales, setting, and sample size (range = 86–6889). Dimensional models included 2–6 factors (median = 4). Twelve studies evaluated competing models and adopted appropriate instruments to assess the latent structure of negative symptoms. The 5-factor and hierarchical models outperformed unitary, 2-factor, and 3-factor models on all direct comparisons, and most of the analyses derived from the Brief Negative Symptom Scale. Considering the quality criteria proposed, 5-factor and hierarchical models achieved excellent fit in just one study. Conclusions Our review points out that the 5-factor and hierarchical models represent the best latent structure of negative symptoms, but the immaturity of the relevant current literature may affect the robustness of this conclusion. Future studies should address current limitations regarding psychometric properties and also address biological and clinical validity to refine available models.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Schizotypy has been shown to be a time-stable construct that exists across the schizophrenia spectrum. The Multidimensional Schizotypy Scale (MSS) was developed to capture the three factors underlying schizotypy: positive, disorganized and negative schizotypy. However, a recent validation study reported a four-factor construct with an additional negative social anhedonia factor. The factor structure of the Chinese version of the MSS remains unknown. This study aimed to identify and validate the factor structure of the Chinese version of the MSS. METHODS We recruited 641 Chinese speakers via on-line advertisement. We administered the Chinese version of the MSS, which was a self-report instrument. The scale consists of 77 items with true or false response options. We identified and removed 43 outliers. Finally, a total of 294 participants were randomly selected as the derivative sample for exploratory factor analysis (EFA). The remaining 304 participants were retained as the validation sample for confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). RESULTS EFA identified four factors: the positive factor, the disorganization factor, the negative affective and motivational anhedonia factor, and the negative social anhedonia factor. The EFA-identified four-factor model was compared with the unidimensional, three-factor bifactorial and theoretical three-factor models using CFAs. The three-factor bifactorial model fitted the data better than the EFA-identified four-factor model. CONCLUSION Our finding suggests that the Chinese version of the MSS is a valid tool for assessing schizotypy in the Chinese setting.

Abstract
PURPOSE The Negative Symptom Assessment-16 (NSA-16) is an instrument with significant validity and utility for assessing negative symptoms associated with schizophrenia. This study aimed to validate the Chinese version of the NSA-16. PATIENTS AND METHODS A total of 172 participants with schizophrenia were assessed with the NSA-16, Scale for Assessment of Negative Symptoms (SANS), Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia (CDSS) and Rating Scale for Extrapyramidal Side Effects (RSESE). The factor structure of the NSA-16 was evaluated via exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. Cronbach's α and intraclass correlation coefficients were computed. Correlations were evaluated via Spearman correlation coefficient. RESULTS The original five-factor model of the NSA-16 did not fit our sample. Exploratory factor analysis followed by confirmatory factor analysis suggested a three-factor structure, consisting of communication, emotion and motivation, with 15 items. The NSA with 15 items was termed as the NSA-15. The NSA-15 showed excellent convergent validity by high correlations with the SANS and PANSS total and negative factor scores and good divergent validity by independence from the PANSS positive factor, CDSS and RSESE. The NSA-15 showed good internal consistency, interrater reliability and test-retest reliability. CONCLUSION The NSA-15 is best characterized by a three-factor structure and is valid for assessing negative symptoms of schizophrenia in Chinese individuals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Developed based on the Clinical Assessment Interview for Negative Symptoms (CAINS), the Motivation and Pleasure Scale-Self Report (MAP-SR) was designed to address the conceptual and psychometric limitations of other instruments assessing negative symptoms. We sought to validate and extend the applicability of the MAP-SR in the Chinese context across the schizophrenia spectrum. METHODS Three samples, including college students, individuals with social anhedonia and patients with schizophrenia, were recruited. Test-retest reliability, internal consistency, factor structure, and convergent/discriminant validity of the MAP-SR were examined. The group differences between the three participant groups were examined. RESULTS A four-factor structure of the MAP-SR was found consistently in all three groups of participants. The scale showed convergent/discriminant validity in patients with schizophrenia and individuals with social anhedonia, along with good reliability found in schizophrenia patients. The MAP-SR was also able to distinguish individuals with SocAnh and patients with SZ from matched controls. CONCLUSIONS The MAP-SR is a valid and reliable instrument in assessing negative symptoms in individuals along the schizophrenia spectrum.

Abstract
Aims: Recent meta-analytic data show that approximately 40% of individuals at clinical high risk for psychosis (CHR) receive at least one personality disorder (PD) diagnosis. Personality pathology could significantly influence CHR patients' prognosis and response to treatment. We aimed at exploring the PD traits of CHR adolescents, in order to outline a prototypic description of their most frequently observed personality characteristics. Methods: One hundred and twenty-three psychiatrists and psychologists used a Q-sort procedure [i.e., the Shedler-Westen Assessment Procedure-200 for Adolescents (SWAP-200-A)] to assess personality traits and disorders in 58 (30 male; mean age = 16 years, range = 13-19 years) CHR adolescents and two gender- and age-matched samples, respectively, with (n = 60) and without PDs (n = 59). Results: Differences between the CHR, PD, and clinical groups showed that CHR adolescents had pervasive and more clinically relevant schizoid, schizotypal, borderline, and avoidant traits, as well as poorer adaptive functioning. Moreover, by collecting the highest mean SWAP-200-A items, we empirically outlined a prototypic description of CHR youths, comprised of avoidance of social relationships; suspiciousness; obsessional thoughts; lack of psychological insight; dysphoric and overwhelming feelings of anxiety and depression; odd and anomalous reasoning processes or perceptual experiences; symptoms of depersonalization and derealization; and negative symptoms of avolition, abulia, blunted affects, and impaired role functioning. Conclusions: The results suggest that avoidant interpersonal strategies, impaired mentalization, and difficulties in emotional regulation could become important targets for psychosocial interventions with CHR adolescent populations.

Abstract
Prior studies using exploratory factor analysis provide evidence that negative symptoms are best conceptualized as 2 dimensions reflecting diminished motivation and expression. However, the 2-dimensional model has yet to be evaluated using more complex mathematical techniques capable of testing structure. In the current study, network analysis was applied to evaluate the latent structure of negative symptoms using a community-detection algorithm. Two studies were conducted that included outpatients with schizophrenia (SZ; Study 1: n = 201; Study 2: n = 912) who were rated on the Brief Negative Symptom Scale (BNSS). In both studies, network analysis indicated that the 13 BNSS items divided into 6 negative symptom domains consisting of anhedonia, avolition, asociality, blunted affect, alogia, and lack of normal distress. Separation of these domains was statistically significant with reference to a null model of randomized networks. There has been a recent trend toward conceptualizing the latent structure of negative symptoms in relation to 2 distinct dimensions reflecting diminished expression and motivation. However, the current results obtained using network analysis suggest that the 2-dimensional conceptualization is not complex enough to capture the nature of the negative symptom construct. Similar to recent confirmatory factor analysis studies, network analysis revealed that the latent structure of negative symptom is best conceptualized in relation to the 5 domains identified in the 2005 National Institute of Mental Health consensus development conference (anhedonia, avolition, asociality, blunted affect, and alogia) and potentially a sixth domain consisting of lack of normal distress. Findings have implications for identifying pathophysiological mechanisms and targeted treatments.

Abstract
Schizotypy and clinical high risk (CHR) criteria can identify individuals who are at increased risk for developing psychosis in community and patient samples. However, both approaches have rarely been combined, and very little is known about their associations. Therefore, we examined the factorial structure of CHR and related symptoms and schizotypy features as well as their interrelationship for the first time in a comprehensive approach. In a sample of 277 patients (22 ± 6 years) from two early detection services, structural equation modeling including confirmatory factor analysis was performed to test a theory-driven model using four Wisconsin Schizotypy Scales, 14 predictive basic symptoms (BS) of the Schizophrenia Proneness Instrument, and positive, negative, and disorganized symptoms from the Structured Interview for Psychosis-Risk Syndromes. The data fitted well to the six hypothesized latent factors consisting of negative schizotypy, positive schizotypy including perceptual BS, negative symptoms, positive symptoms, disorganized symptoms and cognitive disturbances. As postulated, schizotypy features were significantly associated with positive, negative and disorganized symptoms through cognitive disturbances. Additionally, positive and negative schizotypy also had a direct association with the respective symptom-domain. While the identified factorial structure corresponds well to dimensional models of schizotypy and psychoses, our model extends earlier models by indicating that schizotypy features are associated with positive, negative and disorganized symptoms directly or indirectly via subjective cognitive disturbances. This calls for more attention to subjective cognitive deficits in combination with heightened schizotypy in the early detection and intervention of psychoses - or even of an Attenuated Psychosis Syndrome.

Abstract
This study aimed to examine the validity of the Clinical Assessment Interview for Negative Symptoms (CAINS) in Singapore. 274 participants with schizophrenia were assessed on the CAINS, Scale for the Assessment of Negative Symptoms (SANS), Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia (CDSS), Social and Occupational Functioning Assessment Scale (SOFAS) and the Simpson-Angus Extrapyramidal Side Effects Scale (SES). Factor analyses were conducted and Cronbach's coefficient alpha was calculated. Spearman's correlation coefficient was used to assess correlations. The 2-factor model of the CAINS failed to fit our data. Exploratory factor analysis of a randomly selected split-half of the sample yielded four factors: motivation-pleasure (MAP) social, MAP vocational, MAP recreational and expression (EXP), accounting for 73.94% of the total variance. Confirmatory factor analysis on the remaining sample supported this factor structure. Cronbach's alpha for the CAINS was 0.770. Significant correlations were observed between the CAINS total and the SANS total and PANSS negative subscale scores. Good divergent validity was shown by insignificant correlations with PANSS positive subscale score and CDSS total score. The MAP social and recreational factor scores had moderate correlations with the SANS anhedonia-asociality subscale scores, whereas the MAP vocational factor had the highest correlation with the avolition-apathy subscale of the SANS. EXP factor score correlated strongly with the SANS affective flattening and alogia subscales scores. In conclusion, the CAINS has good psychometric properties and can be used by clinicians to assess negative symptoms in individuals with schizophrenia in the local population.

Abstract
Negative symptoms are an important predictor of course of illness as well as social and occupational functioning. Clinically effective interventions are scarce. For negative symptoms to become a reliable primary endpoint in treatment studies, clear operationalization and construct validation is needed. Recent factor analyses mostly find two main factors for negative symptoms: diminished expression und amotivation/anhedonia. The Clinical Assessment Interview for Negative Symptoms (CAINS) consists of the subscales "motivation and pleasure" and "expression". We assessed three samples of subjects with schizophrenia (n = 105) for different aspects of the scale's reliability and validity. A confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) of the CAINS confirmed its two-factorial structure. The subscales had distinct correlational profiles: "Motivation and pleasure" was strongly associated with functional outcome and depression and further with neurocognition, positive symptoms and social cognition. "Expression" seems independent of sources of secondary negative symptoms and neurocognition. We found good internal consistency and interrater agreement. Test-retest reliability (two-week interval) was moderate for the CAINS and its "expression" subscale and low for the "motivation and pleasure" subscale. Our findings indicate that the CAINS differentiates reliably between the two main domains of negative symptoms with some questions remaining concerning the validity of the "motivation and pleasure" subscale.

Abstract
Schizotypy is a personality-framework currently considered a comprehensive and useful construct in schizophrenia research and becoming ever more accepted within psychiatry. Thus, it is crucial to obtain a unifying and generally accepted means of its measuring. The three most commonly used psychometric schizotypy inventories, the Wisconsin Schizotypy Scales, Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire and Oxford-Liverpool Inventory of Feelings and Experiences were, however, built upon different theoretical schizotypy models, wherefore comparing results from studies that have used different inventories is difficult and sometimes questionable. Therefore, an analysis of all three inventories was conducted within the same sample of 327 healthy participants to illustrate the similarities and differences in factor structures. Results showed that findings are likely dependent on the used assessment instrument. A following item-level factor analysis was conducted to investigate the shared structure of all three inventories, in order to illustrate a framework interpretable as "common ground" between measures. This adjusted four-factor structure may be used to better aid comparisons between schizotypy-studies having used different inventories. At least, our findings illustrate the necessity of viewing individual results before the background of the theoretical framework of the respective measurement tool.
