Abstract
Sleep has a substantial impact on memory consolidation, although the link between specific sleep patterns and different forms of memory retention is not well-understood. The purpose of this systematic review is to investigate the correlation between varying sleep habits and memory recall. To identify pertinent research published between 2017 and 2023, a thorough check of electronic databases was carried out. Inclusion criteria encompassed peer-reviewed articles published in English, focusing on human participants, and investigating the relationship between sleep patterns and memory retention. Data extraction and quality assessment were performed on selected studies. This research used different strategies and examined several forms of memory retention, including declarative memory, procedural memory, and emotional memory. Several sleep patterns, including sleep duration, sleep stages, and sleep continuity, were investigated. This comprehensive study demonstrated the relationship between adequate sleep duration and memory consolidation, particularly in regard to declarative memory. Furthermore, deep sleep, characterized by slow-wave sleep (SWS), has been associated with superior procedural memory retention. Sleep continuity, as evaluated by reduced sleep fragmentation or undisturbed sleep, influenced memory consolidation across multiple categories of memory. However, the relationship between rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and memory retention remains inconclusive due to conflicting findings. This systematic review emphasizes the significance of various sleep patterns in memory retention. Memory consolidation corresponds with adequate sleep length, deep sleep (or SWS), and sleep continuity. Future research ought to investigate the connection between REM sleep and memory retention. Understanding the impact of specific sleep patterns on memory processes might help guide therapies and interventions to improve memory consolidation and overall cognitive functioning.

Abstract
The restorative function of sleep is shaped by its duration, timing, continuity, subjective quality, and efficiency. Current sleep recommendations specify only nocturnal duration and have been largely derived from sleep self-reports that can be imprecise and miss relevant details. Sleep duration, preferred timing, and ability to withstand sleep deprivation are heritable traits whose expression may change with age and affect the optimal sleep prescription for an individual. Prevailing societal norms and circumstances related to work and relationships interact to influence sleep opportunity and quality. The value of allocating time for sleep is revealed by the impact of its restriction on behavior, functional brain imaging, sleep macrostructure, and late-life cognition. Augmentation of sleep slow oscillations and spindles have been proposed for enhancing sleep quality, but they inconsistently achieve their goal. Crafting bespoke sleep recommendations could benefit from large-scale, longitudinal collection of objective sleep data integrated with behavioral and self-reported data.

Abstract
Naps are increasingly considered a means to boost cognitive performance. We quantified the cognitive effects of napping in 60 samples from 54 studies. 52 samples evaluated memory. We first evaluated effect sizes for all tests together, before separately assessing their effects on memory, vigilance, speed of processing and executive function. We next examined whether nap effects were moderated by study features of age, nap length, nap start time, habituality and prior sleep restriction. Naps showed significant benefits for the total aggregate of cognitive tests (Cohen's d = 0.379, CI95 = 0.296-0.462). Significant domain specific effects were present for declarative (Cohen's d = 0.376, CI95 = 0.269-0.482) and procedural memory (Cohen's d = 0.494, CI95 = 0.301-0.686), vigilance (Cohen's d = 0.610, CI95 = 0.291-0.929) and speed of processing (Cohen's d = 0.211, CI95 = 0.052-0.369). There were no significant moderation effects of any of the study features. Nap effects were of comparable magnitude across subgroups of each of the 5 moderators (Q values = 0.009 to 8.572, p values > 0.116). Afternoon naps have a small to medium benefit over multiple cognitive tests. These effects transcend age, nap duration and tentatively, habituality and prior nocturnal sleep.

Abstract
Sleep disturbance is common in patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD), and orexin A is a pivotal neurotransmitter for bidirectionally regulating the amyloid-β (Aβ) deposition of AD brain and poor sleep. In the present study, we examined the characteristic of sleep–wake architecture in APPswe/PSldE9 (APP/PS1) and Aβ-treated mice using electroencephalogram (EEG) and electromyographic (EMG) analysis. We compared the expression of orexin A, distribution, and morphology of the corresponding orexin A-positive neurons using innovative methods including three-dimensional reconstruction and brain tissue clearing between wild type (WT) and APP/PS1 mice. Results from our study demonstrated that increased wakefulness and reduced NREM sleep were seen in APP/PS1 and Aβ treated mice, while the expression of orexin A was significantly upregulated. Higher density and distribution of orexin A-positive neurons were seen in APP/PS1 mice, with a location of 1.06 mm–2.30 mm away from the anterior fontanelle compared to 1.34 mm–2.18 mm away from the anterior fontanelle in WT mice. These results suggested that the population and distribution of orexin A may play an important role in the progression of AD.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Memory consolidation benefits from a retention period filled with sleep. Several theoretical accounts assume that slow-wave sleep (SWS) contributes functionally to processes underlying the stabilization of declarative memories during sleep. However, reports on correlations between memory retention and the amount of SWS are mixed and typically rely on between-subject correlations and small sample sizes. Here we tested for the first time whether the amount of SWS during sleep predicts the effect of sleep on memory consolidation on an intra-individual level in a large sample. METHODS One hundred and fifty-nine healthy participants came to the lab twice and took a 90 min nap in both sessions. Sleep-mediated memory benefits were tested using the paired associates word-learning task in both sessions. RESULTS In contrast to the theoretical prediction, intra-individual differences in sleep-mediated memory benefits did not significantly correlate with differences in SWS or SWA between the two naps. Also between subjects, the amount of SWS did not correlate with memory retention across the nap. However, subjective ratings of sleep quality were significantly associated with the amount of SWS. CONCLUSION Our results question the notion that the amount of SWS per se is functionally related to processes of memory consolidation during sleep. While our results do not exclude an important role of SWS for memory, they suggest that "more SWS" does not necessarily imply better memory consolidation.

Abstract
The Saudi Public Health Authority recently prepared a Consensus Statement regarding how much time a person should spend engaged in physical activity, sedentary behavior, and sleep to promote optimal health across all age groups. This paper describes the background literature, methodology, and modified RAND Appropriateness Method and Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE)-ADOLOPMENT approach that guided the development process. A Leadership Group and Consensus Panels were formed, and credible existing guidelines were identified. The Panel identified clear criteria to choose the best practice guidelines for the set objectives after evaluation, based on GRADE table evidence, findings table summaries, and draft recommendations. Updating of the selected practice guidelines was performed, and the Consensus Panels separately reviewed the evidence for each behavior and decided to adopt or adapt the selected practice guideline recommendations or create de novo recommendations. Data related to cultural factors that may affect the studied behaviors, such as prayer times, midday napping or "Qailulah," and the holy month of Ramadan, were also reviewed. Two rounds of voting were conducted to reach a consensus for each behavior.

Abstract
Study Objectives Afternoon naps benefit memory but this may depend on whether one is a habitual napper (HN; ≥1 nap/week) or non-habitual napper (NN). Here, we investigated whether a nap would benefit HN and NN differently, as well as whether HN would be more adversely affected by nap restriction compared to NN. Methods Forty-six participants in the nap condition (HN-nap: n = 25, NN-nap: n = 21) took a 90-min nap (14:00–15:30 pm) on experimental days while 46 participants in the Wake condition (HN-wake: n = 24, NN-wake: n = 22) remained awake in the afternoon. Memory tasks were administered after the nap to assess short-term topographical memory and long-term memory in the form of picture encoding and factual knowledge learning respectively. Results An afternoon nap boosted picture encoding and factual knowledge learning irrespective of whether one habitually napped (main effects of condition (nap/wake): ps < 0.037). However, we found a significant interaction for the hippocampal-dependent topographical memory task (p = 0.039) wherein a nap, relative to wake, benefitted habitual nappers (HN-nap vs HN-wake: p = 0.003) compared to non-habitual nappers (NN-nap vs. NN-wake: p = 0.918). Notably for this task, habitual nappers’ performance significantly declined if they were not allowed to nap (HN-wake vs NN-wake: p = 0.037). Conclusions Contrary to concerns that napping may be disadvantageous for non-habitual nappers, we found that an afternoon nap was beneficial for long-term memory tasks even if one did not habitually nap. Naps were especially beneficial for habitual nappers performing a short-term topographical memory task, as it restored the decline that would otherwise have been incurred without a nap. Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Daytime naps can confer benefits on subsequent declarative learning, but the physiological correlates of this improvement are less well studied. We examined learning following a daytime nap compared with an equivalent waking period using fMRI and polysomnography. METHODS Forty healthy young adults who slept normally the previous night encoded word pair lists in an MRI scanner at 13:00 and 16:30. Between sessions, participants either stayed awake and watched a documentary (Wake Group; N = 20) or had a 90-minute nap opportunity (Nap Group; N = 20) monitored by polysomnography. Approximately 40 minutes after completing each encoding session, memory for learned words was assessed using cued-recall. RESULTS A significant Session × Group interaction effect (p < 0.001) was observed in which memory was significantly improved in the Nap but not in the Wake group (p < 0.001). There was also a Session × Run × Group interaction effect in the left hippocampus (p = 0.001), whereby activation during word pair encoding increased only following the nap. Both performance improvement (rs = 0.46, p = 0.04) and nap-related increase in hippocampal activation (rs = 0.46, p = 0.04) were correlated with nap spindle count (12-15 Hz) but not with slow oscillation power (p's ≥ 0.18). CONCLUSIONS After a habitual nocturnal sleep, participants who had a 90-minute afternoon nap encoded word pairs better than a comparable group who stayed awake. Increases in hippocampal activation following the nap suggest restored hippocampal function. Naptime spindles may contribute to improved memory.

Abstract
Daytime naps have been linked with enhanced memory encoding and consolidation. It remains unclear how a daily napping schedule impacts learning throughout the day, and whether these effects are the same for well-rested and sleep restricted individuals. We compared memory in 112 adolescents who underwent two simulated school weeks containing 8 or 6.5 h sleep opportunities each day. Sleep episodes were nocturnal or split between nocturnal sleep and a 90-min afternoon nap, creating four experimental groups: 8 h-continuous, 8 h-split, 6.5 h-continuous and 6.5 h-split. Declarative memory was assessed with picture encoding and an educationally realistic factual knowledge task. Splitting sleep significantly enhanced afternoon picture encoding and factual knowledge under both 6.5 h and 8 h durations. Splitting sleep also significantly reduced slow-wave energy during nocturnal sleep, suggesting lower homeostatic sleep pressure during the day. There was no negative impact of the split sleep schedule on morning performance, despite a reduction in nocturnal sleep. These findings suggest that naps could be incorporated into a daily sleep schedule that provides sufficient sleep and benefits learning.

Abstract
Fatigue and sleep deficiency among public safety personnel are threats to wellness, public and personal safety, and workforce retention. Napping strategies may reduce work-related fatigue, improve safety and health, yet in some public safety organizations it is discouraged or prohibited. Our aim with this commentary is to define intra-shift napping, summarize arguments for and against it, and to outline potential applications of this important fatigue mitigation strategy supported by evidence. We focus our discussion on emergency medical services (EMS); a key component of the public safety system, which is comprised of police, fire, and EMS. The personnel who work in EMS stand to benefit from intra-shift napping due to frequent use of extended duration shifts, a high prevalence of personnel working multiple jobs, and evidence showing that greater than half of EMS personnel report severe fatigue, poor sleep quality, inadequate inter-shift recovery, and excessive daytime sleepiness. The benefits of intra-shift napping include decreased sleepiness and fatigue, improved recovery between shifts, decreased anxiety, and reduced feelings of burnout. Intra-shift napping also mitigates alterations in clinician blood pressure associated with disturbed sleep and shift work. The negative consequences of napping include negative public perception, acute performance deficits stemming from sleep inertia, and the potential costs associated with reduced performance. While there are valid arguments against intra-shift napping, we believe that the available scientific evidence favors it as a key component of fatigue mitigation and workplace wellness. We further believe that these arguments extend beyond EMS to all sectors of public safety.

Abstract
PURPOSE Sleep deprivation is associated with increased forgetting of declarative memories. Sleep restriction across multiple consecutive nights is prevalent in adolescents, but questions remain as to whether this pattern of sleep impairs memory for material typically learned in the classroom and the time course of retention beyond a few days. METHODS Adolescents aged 15-18 years (n = 29) were given 5 hours sleep opportunity each night for 5 consecutive nights (sleep restricted group; SR), simulating a school week containing insufficient sleep. After the fourth night of restriction, participants learned detailed facts about different species of arthropod across a 6-hour period. Retention was tested 30 minutes and 3 days after learning and contrasted with a control group (n = 30) who had 9 hours sleep opportunity every night of the study. A subset of participants (SR, n = 14; control, n = 22) completed a surprise test 42 days after learning. RESULTS Memory was significantly impaired in the SR group relative to controls, with 26% increased forgetting at the 30-minute test (t(57) = 2.54, p = .014, d = .66), 34% at the Day 3 test (t(57) = 2.65, p = .010, d = .69), and 65% at the Day 42 test (t(34) = 3.22, p = .003, d = 1.17). Vigilance was also significantly impaired after 4 nights of restricted sleep (p < .05), but did not correlate significantly with memory (p > .05). CONCLUSION Long-term retention of classroom material is significantly compromised when adolescents learn after being sleep restricted, reinforcing the importance of keeping good sleep habits to optimize learning.

Abstract
Sleep plays a crucial role in memory stabilization and integration, yet many people obtain insufficient sleep. This review assesses what is known about the level of sleep deprivation that leads to impairments during encoding, consolidation and retrieval of declarative memories, and what can be determined about the underlying neurophysiological processes. Neuroimaging studies that deprived sleep after learning have provided some of the most compelling evidence for sleep's role in the long-term reorganization of memories in the brain (systems consolidation). However, the behavioral consequences of losing sleep after learning-shown by increased forgetting-appear to recover over time and are unaffected by more common forms of partial sleep restriction across several nights. The capacity to encode new memories is the most vulnerable to sleep loss, since long-term deficits have been observed after total and partial sleep deprivation, while retrieval mechanisms are relatively unaffected. The negative impact of sleep loss on memory has been explored extensively after a night of total sleep deprivation, but further research is needed on the consequences of partial sleep loss over many days so that impairments may be generalized to more common forms of sleep loss.
