Abstract
INTRODUCTION Oral health is crucial during adolescence, yet many young individuals engage in suboptimal oral hygiene behaviors, contributing to oral health issues. While genetics may have some influence, lifestyle factors such as diet, preventive care, and oral hygiene practices play a more critical role in the development of dental caries. The World Health Organization recognizes oral health as a lifelong cornerstone of overall well-being. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a school-based educational intervention for improving oral health knowledge, attitudes, practices, and self-efficacy among female secondary school students in Kashan, Iran. METHODS This randomized controlled trial was conducted in 2023 with 80 female students aged 12 years from two public schools at Kashan. The participants were selected via cluster sampling and randomly assigned to either the intervention group (n = 40) or the control group (n = 40). Data were collected at baseline, one month postintervention, and three months postintervention via a standardized questionnaire administered to both groups. The intervention consisted of four weekly 90-minute educational sessions led by a dentist and a health education specialist, with a focus on oral health knowledge, attitudes, practices, and self-efficacy. Additionally, the intervention group received a digital educational booklet, while parents were provided with a checklist to monitor their children's tooth brushing and flossing behaviors. The control group did not receive any educational intervention or a checklist for tracking oral hygiene behaviors during the study period. Dental plaque levels were assessed via plaque-disclosing tablets (PDTs) at baseline and three months postintervention. Data analysis was performed via SPSS version 24, which employs the chi-square test, Wilcoxon test, Mann‒Whitney test, and Friedman test. RESULTS There was a significant difference between the intervention and control groups in all the measured variables after the intervention (p < 0.001). Postintervention, the intervention group demonstrated significant increases in mean scores for oral health knowledge (from 5.4 to 9.3), attitudes (from 55.6 to 62.1), self-efficacy (from 53.5 to 62.7), and practices (from 28.0 to 33.4) (p < 0.05). No significant changes were observed in the control group (p > 0.05). There was a significant difference between the intervention and control groups in all the measured variables after the intervention (p < 0.001). The average score of dental plaque was significantly different between the two groups (p < 0.001). The Wilcoxon test revealed that after the intervention, the test group had improved indicators, and the control group had increased dental plaque scores. CONCLUSION The educational intervention effectively enhanced oral health knowledge, attitudes, self-efficacy, and practices among female students. The incorporation of such interventions into school health programs may promote long-term improvements in oral health behaviors among adolescents. Abstract
BACKGROUND Proactive health behaviours are crucial for enhancing adolescent health. However, there is limited evidence on the potential pathways through which social support influences adolescents' proactive health behaviours. This cross-sectional study aimed to examine the relationships between social support, self-efficacy, peer relationships and proactive health behaviours in Chinese adolescents. METHODS From October to December 2023, we recruited 6075 adolescents from Shandong Province, China. They completed self-report questionnaires on social support, self-efficacy, peer relationships and proactive health behaviours. RESULTS Linear regression analysis indicated that social support was positively associated with proactive health behaviours among adolescents (β = 0.571, 95% CI = 0.542, 0.600). Further mediation analyses revealed that self-efficacy (β = 0.085, 95% CI = 0.069,0.101) and peer relationships (β = 0.156, 95% CI = 0.136,0.177) mediated this relationship. CONCLUSIONS Increased social support was associated with better proactive health behaviours in Chinese adolescents. Additionally, higher self-efficacy and positive peer relationships enhanced this association. Our findings emphasised the significance of providing supportive environments at home and at school to promote proactive health behaviours in adolescents.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of oral health education programs on the oral health of primary school students. METHODS In this randomized controlled trial study, 190 elementary fifth-grade female students were chosen using the multistage cluster sampling method. In this study, the Plaque Index (PI), Simplified Oral Hygiene Index (OHI-S), Community Periodontal Index (CPI), tooth brushing using fluoride toothpaste, dental flossing frequency and factors affecting them were determined according to social cognitive theory (SCT). Interventions were implemented using the play method and with the help of three pamphlets, five posters, a celebration of oral health, and the creation of a Telegram group. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics indexes, t tests, paired sample t tests, chi-square tests, and Pearson correlation tests. RESULTS The results showed that 3 months after the intervention, compared to before the intervention, the percentage of participants in the intervention group who brushed their teeth twice or more per day increased by 48.5%, and the percentage of participants who used dental floss at least once per day increased by 64.2%. The rate of gum bleeding decreased by 6.3%. The good OHI-S rate increased by 44.4%. Dental plaque decreased by 38.1%. CONCLUSION The results demonstrated that a gamification design can be effective and useful in promoting the oral health of students. Abstract
THEORETICAL PRINCIPLES Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) is a middle-range theory with triadic determinism between behavioral, environmental, and personal. SCT has been a guiding framework in health promotion research as it helps understand people's behaviors. PHENOMENA ADDRESSED Behavioral Insomnia of Childhood (BIC) is highly prevalent, affecting up to 45% of typically developing children and 80% of children with special healthcare needs. BIC leads to sleep deficiency, disrupted physical and psychological health, poor school performance, behavioral dysfunction, and negatively affects parental and family functioning. Using Fawcett's framework, we analyzed and evaluated SCT in a pediatric sleep context and propose a reformulation of SCT to better inform sleep research. RESEARCH LINKAGES SCT is individually focused and does not account for interdependence within relationships. Pediatric sleep interventions have limited long-term effects and sustainability without considering the parent-child dyadic interdependency. We advance the argument that the parent-child shared management (PCSM) perspective is beneficial for understanding pediatric sleep health. PCSM is a concept that reflects the shared responsibility and interdependence that parent and child have for managing child health. It assumes that with parents' ongoing support, children's responsibility for their health management increases over time, along with developmental progression and health-related experiences. We propose reformulating SCT by integrating PCSM in the pediatric sleep context: SCT with Shared Management (SCT-SM). The proposed SCT-SM accounts for parent-child interdependence and role transition. Shared management interventions that engage parents and children in active roles in managing sleep have potential sustainable effects in improving sleep and quality of life. (250).

Abstract
Background Due to some unique physical, social and psychological features in the adolescent population, adolescents can be a time of heightened caries activity and periodontal disease. Oral health-related behaviors can be modified to improve oral health status. The family networks and the built environment can promote or inhibit health behaviors. The aim of this study is to implement and evaluate a behavior theory-based, integrated family intervention via mobile messaging to improve oral health of adolescents. Methods This is a three-arm parallel-design cluster-randomized controlled trial. This trial will allocate 12 local secondary schools (clusters) in Hong Kong to three test or comparison groups with a ratio 1:1:1. The enrolled Form II to IV students (ages 12 to 15) will be eligible for participation. The intervention to three study groups will be (i) Health Belief Model (HBM)-based mobile messaging to the adolescents and their parents, which will consist of several blocks of HBM-based messages and reinforcement during 24 weeks; (ii) same HBM-based messaging to adolescents only; and (iii) delivering e-version of oral health education pamphlets to adolescents. The primary outcome will be caries increment 2 years post-intervention. Changes in oral health self-efficacy and behaviors, oral hygiene, and gingival status will be the secondary outcomes. Discussion No school dental care service is available to secondary school students in Hong Kong. This study will be the first to test a theory-driven and family-engaged preventive intervention among adolescents in Hong Kong. Findings will contribute to developing a low-cost, feasible, and efficient oral health preventive program for adolescents. Trial registration ClinicalTrials.govNCT05448664. Registered on 7 July 2022.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Promoting the adoption of personal hygiene behaviors known to reduce the transmission of COVID-19, such as avoiding touching one's face with unwashed hands, is important for limiting the spread of infections. PURPOSE We aimed to test the efficacy of a theory-based intervention to promote the avoidance of touching one's face with unwashed hands to reduce the spread of COVID-19. METHODS We tested effects of an intervention employing imagery, persuasive communication, and planning techniques in two pre-registered studies adopting randomized controlled designs in samples of Australian (N = 254; Study 1) and US (N = 245; Study 2) residents. Participants were randomly assigned to theory-based intervention or education-only conditions (Study 1), or to theory-based intervention, education-only, and no-intervention control conditions (Study 2). The intervention was delivered online and participants completed measures of behavior and theory-based social cognition constructs pre-intervention and one-week postintervention. RESULTS Mixed-model ANOVAs revealed a significant increase in avoidance of touching the face with unwashed hands from pre-intervention to follow-up irrespective of intervention condition in both studies, but no significant condition effects. Exploratory analyses revealed significant effects of the theory-based intervention on behavior at follow-up in individuals with low pre-intervention risk perceptions in Study 2. CONCLUSIONS Results indicate high adoption of avoiding touching one's face with unwashed hands, with behavior increasing over time independent of the intervention. Future research should confirm risk perceptions as a moderator of the effect theory-based interventions on infection-prevention behaviors.
