First Report of Fusarium Wilt of Strawberry Caused by Fusarium oxysporum in Serbia

Effect of chemical alternatives to methyl bromide on soil-borne disease incidence and fungal populations in Spanish strawberry nurseries: A long-term study

BACKGROUND

Chloropicrin (PIC) mixtures of 1,3-dichloropropene and chloropicrin (DD:PIC), dazomet, and metam sodium (MS) have been applied as chemical alternatives to methyl bromide (MB) in Spanish strawberry nurseries since MB was banned as a soil fumigant in 2005. These chemical alternatives were applied to soil in two Spanish strawberry nurseries between 2003 and 2017 to test their efficacy against the main crown and root disease and soil fungal populations in comparison with the use of MB and PIC (MB:PIC). These chemicals were applied at several doses with different application methods under plastic films. Crown and root disease incidence was calculated as the percentage of plants with symptoms caused by soil-borne pathogens. Soil fungal populations were estimated as colony forming units per gram of dry soil.

RESULTS

All chemicals significantly reduced soil-borne fungal disease incidence and fungal population in both nurseries over the years. Phytophthora cactorum and Fusarium spp. were the main pathogens causing soil-borne diseases, followed by Verticillium spp. MB:PIC remained the treatment that best controlled P. cactorum. MS and DD:PIC controlled Fusarium disease to a lesser extent than MB:PIC and dazomet in both nurseries. MB:PIC and PIC were the two treatments that most reduced Verticillium spp. The population of Verticillium spp. declined and the presence of other species such as Colletotrichum spp. and Rhizoctonia spp. was minimal during the study.

CONCLUSION

Chemicals are necessary to obtain healthy strawberry plants. The use of chemical alternatives to MB has resulted in changes in the incidence of soil-borne diseases and soil fungal populations in strawberry nurseries. Dazomet was an effective alternative to MB as a soil-borne disease control, except against Verticillium spp. MB alternatives in strawberry nursery soils have caused Fusarium spp. to displace Verticillium spp.

Differential Inhibitory Activities of Four Plant Essential Oils on In Vitro Growth of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. fragariae Causing Fusarium Wilt in Strawberry Plants

The objective of this study was to determine inhibitory activities of four volatile plant essential oils (cinnamon oil, fennel oil, origanum oil and thyme oil) on in vitro growth of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. fragariae causing Fusarium wilt of strawberry plants. Results showed that these essential oils inhibited in vitro conidial germination and mycelial growth of F. oxysporum f. sp. fragariae in a dose-dependent manner. Cinnamon oil was found to be most effective one in suppressing conidial germination while fennel oil, origanum oil and thyme oil showed moderate inhibition of conidial germination at similar levels. Cinnamon oil, origanum oil and thyme oil showed moderate antifungal activities against mycelial growth at similar levels while fennel oil had relatively lower antifungal activity against mycelial growth. Antifungal effects of these four plant essential oils in different combinations on in vitro fungal growth were also evaluated. These essential oils demonstrated synergistic antifungal activities against conidial germination and mycelial growth of F. oxysporum f. sp. fragariae in vitro. Simultaneous application of origanum oil and thyme oil enhanced their antimicrobial activities against conidial germination and fungal mycelial growth. These results underpin that volatile plant essential oils could be used in eco-friendly integrated disease management of Fusarium wilt in strawberry fields.

Potential Inoculum Sources and Incidence of Strawberry Soilborne Pathogens in Spain

The decline and death of strawberry plants in Spanish fruit production fields have mainly been attributed to the soilborne pathogens Macrophomina phaseolina, Phytophthora cactorum, and Fusarium spp. Inoculum sources of M. phaseolina and P. cactorum, and the incidence all three genera, were investigated in nurseries and fruit production fields over three consecutive seasons. M. phaseolina inoculum sources consisted of fumigated preplant fruit production soils (50%) and fumigated nursery soils (47%), although the pathogen could not be detected in nursery mother and runner plants. P. cactorum inoculum sources included nursery (20%) and preplant fruit production (17%) fumigated soils, and nursery runner plants (up to 15%). In fruit production plants, the average incidence of M. phaseolina and P. cactorum were 4.2 and 3.7%, respectively. Fusarium spp. inoculum sources could not be accessed extensively due to the lack of effective quantitative real-time PCR assays. Limited testing of nursery plants showed that Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. fragariae (Fof) was absent. In field production plants and soil, F. solani was the main pathogenic Fusarium spp., with Fof only identified once in a fruit production plant. Ineffectively fumigated soils in nurseries and production fields, along with infected runner plants, can be inoculum sources of soilborne strawberry pathogens in Spain.
