Abstract
The incidence and mortality of gynecologic cancers have been constantly increasing in China over the last 2 decades, which become a major health concern for women. Survival rates of gynecologic cancers are generally not satisfactory and decrease along with the advancing stage, this is mainly due to the lack of a clear prognostic evaluation during the treatment, which brings difficulties to the treatment. Therefore, more accurate prognostic evaluation methods are urgently needed. To solve this problem, this article explores the changes in the biomechanical properties of cells. Changes in the biomechanical properties of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) were explored by nano detection technology. The reference criteria for clinical evaluation of ovarian cancer (Age, FIGO stage, Histologic type, CA-125, Ascites, Single/Double, Residual lesion, and Chemotherapy) were compared and analyzed. The results showed that the average cell height of CTCs was 4.12 ± 0.83 μm before chemotherapy and 4.87 ± 0.71 μm after chemotherapy, with an average increase of 18.203 %. The apparent Young's modulus (E) was 3.884 ± 0.045 kPa before chemotherapy and 4.514 ± 0.025 kPa after chemotherapy, which increased by 0.63 kPa. The ROC analysis of FIGO stage of ovarian cancer patients showed that Young's modulus of cells could better reflect the accuracy of the evaluation of FIGO stage of patients, with the accuracy reaching 76.7 %, which was higher than the detection accuracy of CA-125 (72.6 %). In conclusion, the mechanical properties of CTCs can indicate the FIGO stage and diagnosis of patients and predict the prognostic risk of patients.

Abstract
Corilagin (CLG) is a hydrolyzable tannin and possesses various pharmacological activities. Here, we investigated the impact of CLG as an anti-tumor agent against human gastric tumor cells. We observed that CLG could cause negative regulation of JAKs-Src-STAT3/5 signaling axis in SNU-1 cells, but did not affect these pathways in SNU-16 cells. Interestingly, CLG promoted the induction of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) signaling pathways in only SNU-16 cells, but not in the SNU-1 cells. CLG exhibited apoptotic effects that caused an increased accumulation of the cells in sub-G1 phase and caspase-3 activation in both SNU-1 and SNU-16 cell lines. We also noticed that CLG and docetaxel co-treatment could exhibit significantly enhanced apoptotic effects against SNU-1 cells. Moreover, the combinations treatment of CLG and docetaxel markedly inhibited cell growth, phosphorylation of JAK-Src-STAT3 and induced substantial apoptosis. Additionally, pharmacological inhibition of JNK, p38, and ERK substantially blocked CLG-induced activation of MAPKs, cell viability, and apoptosis, thereby implicating the pivotal role of MAPKs in the observed anti-cancer effects of CLG. Taken together, our data suggest that CLG could effectively block constitutive STAT3/5 activation in SNU-1 cells but induce sustained MAPKs activation in SNU-16 cells.

Abstract
Docetaxel could inhibit the proliferation of tumor cells by targeting microtubules. The extension of cellular microtubules plays an important role in the invasion and metastasis of tumor cells. This paper aims to study the distribution and mechanical properties of cytoskeletal proteins with low concentration of docetaxel. MTT assay was used to detect the minimum drug activity concentration of docetaxel on SKOV-3 cells, fluorescence staining was used to analyze the distribution of cytoskeleton proteins, scanning electron microscopy(SEM) was used to observe the morphology of single cells, and atomic force microscopy(AFM) was used to determine the microstructure and mechanical properties of cells. The results showed that the IC10 of docetaxel was 1 ng/ml. Docetaxel can effectively inhibit the formation of cell pseudopodia, hinder the indirectness between cells, reduce the cell extension area, and make the cells malformed. In addition, when AFM analyzes the effects of drugs on cell microstructure and mechanical properties, the average cell surface roughness and cell height are positively correlated with the concentration of docetaxel. Especially when the concentration was 100 ng/ml, the adhesion decreased by 37.04% and Young's modulus increased by 1.57 times compared with the control group. This may be because docetaxel leads to microtubule remodeling and membrane protein aggregation, which affects cell microstructure and increases cell strength, leading to significant changes in the mechanical properties of ovarian cells. This is of great significance to the study of the formation mechanism of tumor cell invasion and migration activities mediated by actin.

Abstract
Gastric cancer is one of the most common malignancies ranks as the second leading cause of cancer-related mortality in the world. Cisplatin (DDP) is commonly used for gastric cancer treatment, whereas recurrence and metastasis are common because of intrinsic and acquired DDP-resistance. The aim of this study is to examine the effects of berberine on the DDP-resistance in gastric cancer and explore the underling mechanisms. In this study, we established the DDP-resistant gastric cancer cells, where the IC50 values of DDP in the BGC-823/DDP and SGC-7901/DDP were significantly higher than that in the corresponding parental cells. Berberine could concentration-dependently inhibited the cell viability of BGC-823 and SGC-7901 cells; while the inhibitory effects of berberine on the cell viability were largely attenuated in the DDP-resistant cells. Berberine pre-treatment significantly sensitized BGC-823/DDP and SGC-7901/DDP cells to DDP. Furthermore, berberine treatment concentration-dependently down-regulated the multidrug resistance-associated protein 1 and multi-drug resistance-1 protein levels in the BGC-823/DDP and SGC7901/DDP cells. Interestingly, the cell apoptosis of BGC-823/DDP and SGC-7901/DDP cells was significantly enhanced by co-treatment with berberine and DDP. The results from animals also showed that berberine treatment sensitized SGC-7901/DDP cells to DDP in vivo. Mechanistically, berberine significantly suppressed the PI3K/AKT/mTOR in the BGC-823/DDP and SGC-7901/DDP cells treated with DDP. In conclusion, we observed that berberine sensitizes gastric cancer cells to DDP. Further mechanistic findings suggested that berberine-mediated DDP-sensitivity may be associated with reduced expression of drug transporters (multi-drug resistance-1 and multidrug resistance-associated protein 1), enhanced apoptosis and repressed PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling.

Abstract
Gastric cancer is a prevalent cancer and chemotherapy is a main treatment for patients. Docetaxel is commonly used as a chemotherapeutic drug for gastric cancer patients. With the increasing emergence of docetaxel resistance, exploring the mechanism of chemoresistance may improve prognosis of patients. In this study, we found that overexpressed miR-361-5p suppressed chemoresistance to docetaxel of gastric cancer cells (SGC-7901, MKN-28) by decreasing IC50 values of docetaxel while increasing cell apoptosis rate, especially in docetaxel resistant SGC-7901 cells. Further researches revealed that overexpressed miR-361-5p inhibited chemoresistance through inhibiting autophagy with a characteristic of declined number of LC3+ puncta, decreased expression of Beclin-1 and the ratio of LC3 II/I and increased expression of p62. Bioinformatics study and Luciferase reporter assay indicated that FOXM1 was a target of miR-361-5p and FOXM1 was negatively regulated by miR-361-5p in gastric cancer. Simultaneously, overexpression of FOXM1 counteracted the inhibitory effects of miR-361-5p on chemoresistance of gastric cancer cells through activating autophagy, further certifying the targeting relationship between the two. Moreover, overexpressed miR-361-5p activated the PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway. The adding of PI3K inhibitor LY294002 played an opposite role to miR-361-5p mimic by inducing autophagy and chemoresistance to docetaxel of gastric cancer cells compared with docetaxel + miR-361-5p mimic group, indicating that miR-361-5p suppressed autophagy-induced chemoresistance via the PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway in gastric cancer cells. In conclusion, we found that miR-361-5p suppressed autophagy-induced chemoresistance of gastric cancer cells through targeting FOXM1 via the PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway, providing a foundation for the mechanism research and treatment of gastric cancer.

Abstract
Damage to mitochondria induces mitophagy, a cellular process that is gaining interest for its therapeutic relevance to a variety of human diseases. However, the mechanism underlying mitochondrial depolarization and clearance in mitophagy remains poorly understood. We previously reported that mitochondria-induced cell death was caused by knockdown of Neisseria gonorrhoeae opacity-associated-interacting protein 5 in gastric cancer. In this study, we show that Neisseria gonorrhoeae opacity-associated-interacting protein 5 loss and gain of function modulates mitophagy induced by treatment with docetaxel, a chemotherapy drug for gastric cancer. The activation of mitophagy by Neisseria gonorrhoeae opacity-associated-interacting protein 5 overexpression promoted cell survival, preventing docetaxel-induced mitochondrial clearance. Conversely, short interfering RNA-mediated knockdown of Neisseria gonorrhoeae opacity-associated-interacting protein 5 accelerated docetaxel-induced apoptosis while increasing mitochondrial depolarization, reactive oxygen species, and endoplasmic reticulum stress and decreasing adenosine triphosphate production. We also found that the mitochondrial outer membrane proteins mitofusin 2 and phosphatase and tensin homolog-induced putative kinase 1 colocalized with Neisseria gonorrhoeae opacity-associated-interacting protein 5 in mitochondria and that mitofusin 2 knockdown altered Neisseria gonorrhoeae opacity-associated-interacting protein 5 expression. These findings indicate that Neisseria gonorrhoeae opacity-associated-interacting protein 5 modulates docetaxel-induced mitophagic cell death and therefore suggest that this protein comprises a potential therapeutic target for gastric cancer treatment.

Abstract
Background Neoadjuvant chemotherapy improves survival of locally advanced gastric cancer patients. However, benefit is limited and the best regimen remains controversial. Objectives Our primary objective of this prospective, multicenter phase 2 study was to evaluate the pathological complete response rate (PCR) with 2 cycles of docetaxel and capecitabine. Methods To be eligible, patients had to have histologically documented gastric cancer, a ECOG performance status 0 or 1, T3or4 Nany M0 staging after oesophagogastroduodenoscopy (OGD), endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), CT scan of thorax and abdomen, and negative laparoscopic examination and peritoneal washing. Eligible patients received two cycles of intravenous docetaxel 60 mg/m2 on day 1 and oral capecitabine 900 mg/m2 two times per day from day 1 to day 14 every 3 weeks. We evaluated the response by CT scan and EUS. The patients underwent curative resection with D2 lymphadenectomy subsequently. Results 18 patients were enrolled in the study: 66% were male and the median age was 60 years. 17 patients had T3 disease at diagnosis. There was no pCR noted. 4 patients had a partial response of 22% (95% CI: 7–42%), 8 patients had stable disease and 3 patients had disease progression. The median survival was 17.1 months with 3 long-term survivors after at least 3 years of follow-up. The treatment was well tolerated with neutropenia being the most common toxicity. We observed 22% grade III and 33% grade IV neutropenia, but no neutropenic fever or death was observed from chemotherapy. Conclusion Neo-adjuvant chemotherapy with docetaxel and capecitabine has limited activity against GC. More effective treatment regimens are needed urgently. Trial registration number NCT00414271.

Abstract
Docetaxel is commonly used as an effective chemotherapeutic drug for gastric cancer patients recently. With the increasing emergence of docetaxel resistance nowadays, identification of suitable biomarkers for predicting chemosensitivity to docetaxel may be a key role for improving therapeutic effects for gastric cancer patients. In this study, we investigated the correlation between the expression of transcription factor forkhead box protein M1 (FOXM1) and chemotherapy response to docetaxel in gastric cancer, the possible mechanism for which was further explored. As a result, FOXM1 overexpression was shown to mediate resistance to docetaxel in gastric cancers. It altered microtubule dynamics to protect tumour cells from docetaxel-induced apoptosis. Mechanistic investigations revealed that tubulin-destabilizing protein Stathmin, which mediated docetaxel resistance in FOXM1-silenced gastric cancer cells, is a direct down-stream target of FOXM1, whereas another microtubule dynamics protein mitotic centromere–associated kinesin (MCAK), shown to be related to docetaxel resistance in gastric cancer cells, is not associated with FOXM1 expression significantly. These results were further provided by immunohistochemical analysis, indicating that FOXM1 and Stathmin expression levels were correlated in 103 post-operational gastric cancer specimens. Moreover, when we attenuated FOXM1 expression with FOXM1 inhibitor thiostrepton, docetaxel resistance in gastric cancers was found to be reversed, simultaneously with the down-regulation of FOXM1 and Stathmin. Therefore, FOXM1 can be a useful marker for predicting and monitoring docetaxel response. Through the inhibition of FOXM1, docetaxel resistance can be reversed, and thus FOXM1 could be a new therapeutic target in docetaxel-resistant gastric cancer.

Abstract
Background Forkhead box transcription factor 1 (FOXM1) has been reported to overexpress and correlate with pathogenesis in a variety of human malignancies. However, little research has been done to investigate its clinical significance in gastric cancer. Methods We examined the expression of FOXM1 in 103 postoperational gastric cancer tissues and 5 gastric cell lines by immunohistochemistry and western blot analysis respectively. Data on clinic-pathological features and relevant prognostic factors in these patients were then analyzed. Moreover, the association of FOXM1 expression and chemosensitivity to docetaxel in gastric cancer cells was further explored. Results Our study demonstrated that the level of FOXM1 expression was significantly higher in gastric cancer than in para-cancer tissues (P < 0.001) and normal gastric cell lines (P = 0.026). No significant association was found between FOXM1 expression and any clinical pathological features (P > 0.1). FOXM1 amplification was identified as an independent prognostic factor in gastric cancer (P = 0.001), and its affection is more significant in patients with tumor size larger than 5 cm (P = 0.004), pT3-4 (P = 0.003) or pIII-IV (P = 0.001). Additionally, shown to mediate docetaxel resistance in gastric cancers by our research, FOXM1 was revealed to alter microtubule dynamics in response to the treatment of docetaxel, and the drug resistance could be reversed with FOXM1 inhibitor thiostrepton treatment. Conclusions FOXM1 can be a useful marker for predicting patients’ prognosis and monitoring docetaxel response, and might be a new therapeutic target in docetaxel resistant gastric cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Gastric carcinoma (GC) is one of the highest cancer-mortality diseases with a high incidence rate in Asia. For surgically unfit but medically fit patients, palliative chemotherapy is the main treatment. The chemotherapy regimen of docetaxel, cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil (DCF) has been used to treat the advanced stage or metastatic GC. It is necessary to compare effectiveness and toxicities of DCF regimen with non-taxane-containing palliative chemotherapy for GC. METHODS PubMed, EmBase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and China National Knowledge Infrastructure databases were searched to select relative randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing DCF to non-taxane-containing chemotherapy for patients with palliatively resected, unresectable, recurrent or metastatic GC. Primary outcome measures were 1-year and 2-year overall survival (OS) rates. Secondary outcome measures were median survival time (MST), median time to progression (TTP), response rate and toxicities. RESULTS Twelve RCTs were eligible and 1089 patients were analyzed totally (549 in DCF and 540 in control). DCF regimen increased partial response rate (38.8% vs 27.9%, p = 0.0003) and reduced progressive disease rate (18.9% vs 33.3%, p = 0.0005) compared to control regimen. Significant improvement of 2-year OS rate was found in DCF regimen (RR = 2.03, p = 0.006), but not of 1-year OS rate (RR = 1.22, p = 0.08). MST was significantly prolonged by DCF regimen (p = 0.039), but not median TTP (p = 0.054). Both 1-year OS rate and median TTP had a trend of prolongation by DCF regimen. Chemotherapy-related mortality was comparable (RR = 1.23, p = 0.49) in both regimens. In grade I-IV toxicities, DCF regimen showed a major raise of febrile neutropenia (RR = 2.33, p<0.0001) and minor raises of leucopenia (RR = 1.25, p<0.00001), neutropenia (RR = 1.19, p<0.00001), and diarrhea (RR = 1.59, p<0.00001), while in other toxicities there were no significant differences. CONCLUSION DCF regimen has better response than non-taxane containing regimen and could potentially improve the survival outcomes. The chemotherapy-related toxicity of DCF regimen is acceptable to some extent.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and toxicity of docetaxel (TAX), cisplatin (CDDP), and fluorouracil (5-FU) plus leucovorin (CF) as the neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) regimens in the treatment of nonresectable advanced gastric cancer. Twelve patients with nonresectable advanced gastric cancer were treated with NACT regimens consisted of docetaxel, cisplatin, fluorouracil, plus leucovorin before operation. Nine of the 12 patients were downstaged and 8 were radically operated after the end of the NACT. The overall response rate was 75% with 8.3% complete response and 66.7% partial response, and the ascites disappeared in 63.6%. The most common toxicities were bone marrow suppression, nausea, vomiting, alopecia, and heptoses. The toxicities were recoverable after symptomatic treatment. The results confirmed that the combination of docetaxel, cisplatin, fluorouracil plus leucovorin (CF) is a very effective and well-tolerated regimen as NACT for the patients with nonresectable advanced gastric cancer.

Abstract
Although radical surgical R0 resections are the basis of cure for gastric cancer, surgery alone only provides long-term survival in 20-30% of patients with advanced-stage disease. Thus, in Western and European countries, advanced gastric cancer has a high risk of recurrence and metachronous metastases. Very recently, multimodal strategies combining different neoadjuvant and/or adjuvant protocols have improved the prognosis of gastric cancer when combined with surgery with curative intent. As used in palliative regimens, the combination of cisplatin with intravenous or oral fluoropyrimidines has been the integral component of such (neo)adjuvant strategies. However, the cytotoxic agents docetaxel, oxaliplatin and irinotecan and new targeted biologicals such as cetuximab, bevacizumab or panitumumab are currently under investigation, with or without irradiation, in multimodal treatment regimens. These studies may further increase R0 resection rates, and prolong disease-free and overall survival times in the treatment of advanced gastric cancer. This article reviews the most relevant literature on multimodal treatment of gastric cancer, and discusses future strategies to improve locoregional failures.

Abstract
From February, 2001 to September, 2002, the Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG) accrued 65 patients with advanced gastric adenocarcinoma to a phase II trial of weekly 5-FU, leucovorin, and the orally-administered uridine analog PN401. Of these 65 patients, 57 were assessable for survival and toxicity, which were the endpoints for the study. Treatment consisted of the administration of 1200 mg/m(2) of 5-FU, 500 mg/m(2) of leucovorin, and 6 grams of PN401 every 8 h, beginning 8 h after the completion of the 5-FU infusion, and continuing for a total of 8 doses (48 grams) during each weekly chemotherapy session. Therapy was delivered for six weeks out of every 8-week treatment cycle. The gastrointestinal toxicity of this regimen was mild with 2 patients experiencing grade 3 stomatitis, and 6 patients having grade 3 diarrhea; and the hematologic toxicity was acceptable with 6 of 57 patients found to have had grade 3 or 4 leukopenia, and 14 of 57 patients experiencing grade 3 or 4 neutropenia. There were two deaths judged possibly related to treatment; one in a patient who experienced a variety of Grade 2 gastrointestinal toxicities and died at home with an unknown cause of death; and a second patient who also died at home, and for whom treatment-related sepsis could not be ruled out. The overall median survival was 7.2 months. The ability to safely deliver twice the usual dose of 5-FU with leucovorin on a weekly schedule suggests that oral uridine analog supplementation with PN401 may enhance the therapeutic index of the fluoropyrimidines.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The standard chemotherapy regimen for advanced gastric cancer has not yet been established. We investigated the efficacy and the safety of the combination of docetaxel with infusional 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and leucovorin (FLT) in advanced gastric cancer. METHODS Patients received docetaxel 75 mg/m(2) (1-hour infusion) followed by a leucovorin bolus 20 mg/m(2) and a 24-hour infusion of 5-FU 1,000 mg/m(2) (day 1-3) every 3 weeks. The response was evaluated according to the Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (RECIST) criteria, and the toxicity was evaluated by National Cancer Institute common toxicity criteria (NCI-CTC). RESULTS Sixty-six patients were enrolled. Median relative dose intensity was 86%. Of 57 evaluable patients, the overall response rate was 25.7%. The response rate was 34.2% in chemonaïve patients and 14.2% in the patients who had previously received treatment. Median time to progression and overall survival duration were 5.2 and 9.7 months, respectively. The most frequent grade 3-4 toxicity was neutropenia, which was the major cause of treatment delay. Other hematological and nonhematological toxicities were rare. CONCLUSIONS The FLT regimen showed a comparable efficacy with other second-generation regimens. Because of the low nonhematological toxicity, this could be a potential alternative to the cisplatin-containing regimens in gastric cancer.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Adenocarcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma is a rare tumor, and thus the management of the tumor has not been established. METHODS The retrospective review of the clinical records at Okayama University was performed. RESULTS We present five cases of adenocarcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma of the head and neck, including a rare case with nasopharyngeal adenocarcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma. There was no response to chemotherapy with nedaplatin and 5-FU, but the nasopharyngeal adenocarcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma showed a remarkable regression after the administration of docetaxel. CONCLUSION The combination therapy that includes docetaxel may be a promising treatment for adenocarcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma of the head and neck.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This phase I study was aimed at defining the toxicity profile and pathological response rate of a neoadjuvant schedule including weekly docetaxel and cisplatin, protracted venous infusion (PVI) of 5-FU and concomitant radiotherapy (RT) in locally advanced esophageal cancer. PATIENTS AND METHODS The schedule consisted of a first phase of chemotherapy alone and a second phase of concurrent chemoradiation. Initial doses were: docetaxel and cisplatin 20 mg/m2 on days 1, 8, 15, 29, 36 and 43 plus 5-FU 150 mg/m2 PVI on days 1-21 and 29-49; RT (40 Gy) started on day 29. In the following steps the doses were escalated up to docetaxel 35 mg/m2 and cisplatin 25 mg/m2 on days 1, 8, 15, 29, 36, 43, 50 and 57 plus 5-FU 180 mg/m2 PVI on days 1-21 and 150 mg/m2 PVI on days 29-63 concurrently with RT 50 Gy. RESULTS Forty-seven patients were enrolled and 46 completed the planned treatment. During the concomitant phase, grade 3-4 hematological toxicities occurred in three patients (6.5%) (or 3/174 cycles) and non-hematological toxicities in six patients (13%) (or 7/179 cycles). A pathological downstaging was obtained in 59.6% of the cases (28/47): complete remission (pCR) in 14 patients, near pCR (residual microfoci on the primary pN0) in eight patients, pT2 pN0 in three patients and partial response on the primary with positive lymph nodes in three patients. Six (13%) and 13 (28%) patients were considered stable and non-responders, respectively. In the last dose level, eight pCR and four near-pCR were obtained out of 15 patients. The maximum tolerable dose was not formally defined because dose escalation was stopped at the last dose level. CONCLUSION This schedule represents a feasible treatment and the high pathological response rate is extremely encouraging; the doses found in the last dose-level are the basis for an ongoing phase II study at our institution.

Abstract
Capecitabine and docetaxel have considerable single-agent activity in gastric cancer with distinct mechanisms of action and no overlap of key toxicities. A synergistic interaction between these two drugs is mediated by taxane-induced upregulation of thymidine phosphorylase. We investigated the activity and the feasibility of capecitabine and docetaxel combination chemotherapy in patients with previously untreated advanced gastric cancer (AGC). From September 2001 to March 2003, 42 patients with AGC received 21-day cycles of oral capecitabine (1250 mg m−2 twice daily on days 1–14) and docetaxel (75 mg m−2 i.v. on day 1). The patients received a total of 164 cycles of chemotherapy. The median age was 53.5 years (range 33–73 years). The overall response rate in the 38 efficacy-evaluable patients was 60% (95% confidence interval, 45–74%). The median progression-free survival was 5.2 months (range, 1.0–15.5+ months) and the median overall survival was 10.5 months (range, 2.9–23.7+ months). The most common grade 3/4 adverse events were hand–foot syndrome (HFS: G3 50%), neutropenia (15%) and leucopenia (12%). Further studies of this combination are clearly warranted, albeit with lower doses of both agents (1000 mg m−2 twice daily and 60 mg m−2) to reduce the rate of HFS and onycholysis.

Abstract
Despite surgical R0 resections, patients with gastric cancer stage UICC II-III have a high risk of recurrence and metachronic metastases. Preliminary evidence exists that adjuvant chemotherapy or neoadjuvant chemo(radio)therapy protocols may improve the prognosis of these patients undergoing surgery of gastric cancer with curative intention. As for palliative regimens, 5-fluorouracil and cisplatin are integral components of such (neo)adjuvant strategies. Upcoming cytostatic agents, i.e. irinotecan, docetaxel, oxaliplatin, and oral fluoropyridines are currently under investigation in new multimodality treatment regimens and may further increase R0 resection rates and may prolong disease-free and overall survival in the treatment of advanced localized gastric cancer.
