Interleaved magnetic resonance and ultrasound by electronic synchronization

Control of a wireless sensor using the pulse sequence for prospective motion correction in brain MRI

PURPOSE

To synchronize and pass information between a wireless motion-tracking device and a pulse sequence and show how this can be used to implement customizable navigator interleaving schemes that are part of the pulse sequence design.

METHODS

The device tracks motion by sampling the voltages induced in 3 orthogonal pickup coils by the changing gradient fields. These coils were modified to also detect RF-transmit events using a 3D RF-detection circuit. The device could then detect and decode a set RF signatures while ignoring excitations in the parent pulse sequence. A set of unique RF signatures were then paired with a collection of navigators and used to trigger readouts on the wireless device synchronous to the pulse sequence execution. Navigator interleaving schemes were then demonstrated in 3D RF-spoiled gradient echo, T₁ -FLAIR (fluid-attenuated inversion recovery) PROPELLER (periodically rotated overlapping parallel lines with enhanced reconstruction), and T₂ -FLAIR PROPELLER pulse sequences.

RESULTS

Excitations in the parent pulse sequences were successfully rejected and the RF signatures successfully decoded. For the 3D gradient echo sequence, distortions were removed by interleaving flipped polarity navigators and taking the difference between consecutive readouts. The impact on scan duration was reduced by 54% by breaking up the navigators into smaller parts. Successful motion correction was performed using the PROPELLER pulse sequences in 3 Tesla and 1.5 Tesla MRI scanners without modifications to the device hardware or software.

CONCLUSION

The proposed RF signature-based triggering scheme enables complex interactions between the pulse sequence and a wireless device. Thus, enabling prospective motion correction that is repeatable, versatile, and minimally invasive with respect to hardware setup.

Progress in multimodality imaging: truly simultaneous ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging

Multimodality medical imaging takes advantage of the strengths of different imaging modalities to provide a more complete picture of the anatomy under investigation. Many complementary modalities have been combined to form such systems and some are gaining use clinically. One combination that has not been developed, in large part due to technical difficulties, is a combined magnetic resonance (MR) and ultrasound (US) imaging system. Such a system offers the potential to combine the strengths of these modalities in a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic applications. The goal of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of performing simultaneous multimodality US and MR imaging. An US imaging system capable of operation in a clinical MR imager was developed, and methods to perform simultaneous imaging were investigated. Simultaneous imaging was feasible without any mutual interference by either filtering the transmitted and received US signal, or by synchronizing data acquisition between the two imaging systems. Spatial registration between the two modalities was achieved by using a reference phantom with implanted glass beads in orthogonal planes. Excellent agreement was observed between spatial measurements of an object made with both modalities, and the feasibility of using this system in vivo was demonstrated in a rabbit model. Simultaneous US and MR imaging is achievable, and can provide complementary information about an object under investigation. This demonstration of technical feasibility and the development of a prototype system open up the potential to investigate the promising clinical applications of this combined technology.

In vivo validation of magnetic resonance blood volume flow measurements with limited spatial resolution in small vessels

The accuracy of magnetic resonance phase contrast volume flow measurements in small blood vessels is expected to be smaller than in large vessels, because of partial volume effects at the vessel boundary. Accuracy was validated in the dog femoral artery, diameter 3.5 +/- 0.7 mm, using an ultrasonic transit-time flowmeter (TT). The number of pixels per vessel diameter (ND) ranged from 1.6 to 4.8. The vessel cross-section was determined using a threshold in the magnitude image. Between the two methods the correlation coefficient was 0.95 (range 10-200 ml/min). The proportional difference (PD), (QTT-QMR)/1/2(QTT+QMR), was 0.8%, showing no systematic difference between the methods. The PDs standard deviation was 27%, and 19% for flow rates above 30 ml/min. Only a significant decrease of the PDs variance was found at the highest ND values, suggesting other sources of error than partial volume effects. It is concluded that with an ND value of about 3, accurate blood volume flow rates can be determined.
