Abstract
Nickel-titanium (NiTi) instruments have become the backbone of endodontics due to their exceptional properties, superelasticity, and shape memory. However, challenges such as unexpected breakage, poor cutting efficiency, and corrosion have prompted researchers to explore innovative surface modifications to enhance their performance. This comprehensive review discusses the latest advancements in NiTi metallurgy and their impact on rotary NiTi file systems. Various surface treatment techniques, including ion implantation, cryogenic treatment (CT), thermal nitridation, electropolishing, and physical or chemical vapor deposition, have been investigated to minimize defects, boost surface hardness, and improve cyclic fatigue resistance. Ion implantation has shown promise by increasing wear resistance and cutting efficiency through nitrogen ion incorporation. Thermal nitridation has successfully formed titanium nitride (TiN) coatings, resulting in improved corrosion resistance and cutting efficiency. CT has demonstrated increased cutting efficiency and overall strength by creating a martensite transformation and finer carbide particles. Electropolishing has yielded mixed results, providing smoother surfaces but varying impacts on fatigue resistance. Physical or chemical vapor deposition has proven effective in forming TiN coatings, enhancing hardness and wear resistance. Furthermore, the concept of surface functionalization with silver ions for antibacterial properties has been explored. These advancements present an exciting future for endodontic procedures, offering the potential for enhanced NiTi instruments with improved performance, durability, and patient outcomes.

Abstract
Aim This study aimed to evaluate the effect of 5.25% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and sterilization on the nanostructural alteration of nickel titanium (Ni-Ti) rotary file systems in endodontics using the atomic force microscopy (AFM). Materials and Methods The study was performed on four commercially available rotary Ni-Ti files: group I-Vortex Blue (Dentsply), group II-ProTaper Next (Dentsply), group III-Mtwo (VDW), and group IV-iRaCe (FKG). Each group was divided into four subgroups (n = 4), that is, subgroup A-control (new rotary file), subgroup B-subjected for five cycles of autoclave, subgroup C-immersed in 5.25% NaOCl for 5 minutes, and subgroup D-immersed in 17% EDTA solutions for 5 minutes. All the specimens were evaluated with AFM using roughness average (RA) and root-mean-square (RMS) values for surface roughness. Results Among control groups, Vortex Blue showed the least RA and RMS values; the highest surface roughness was seen with Mtwo files. All the Ni-Ti rotary files showed a statistically significant (P <0.05) increase in surface hardness when subjected to autoclave and treatment with different irrigating solutions. In particular, 17% EDTA caused the highest surface deterioration in all the groups. Conclusion AFM analysis revealed increased surface roughness values recorded for all the rotary files when treated with irrigating solutions and autoclave cycles.

Abstract
Nickel-titanium (NiTi) alloy has been extensively researched in endodontics, particularly in cleaning and shaping the root canal system. Research advances have primarily focused on the design, shape, and geometry of the NiTi files as well as metallurgy and mechanical properties. So far, extensive investigations have been made surrounding surface and thermomechanical treatments, however, limited work has been done in the realm of surface functionalization to augment its performance in endodontics. This review summarizes the unique characteristics, current use, and latest developments in thermomechanically treated NiTi endodontic files. It discusses recent improvements in nano-engineering and the possibility of customizing the NiTi file surface for added functionalization. Whilst clinical translation of this technology has yet to be fully realized, future research direction will lie in the use of nanotechnology. Nitinol (Nickel Titanium alloy) is widely used to clean/shape root canal system in endodontics. To enhance its performance, various thermo-mechanical and nano-engineering modifications have been performed. This comprehensive review summarizes the latest advances and future trends relating to functionalized NiTi endodontic files.

Abstract
Introduction The purpose of this research is to assess the wearing of the rotary file system (Protaper Next) and reciprocating file systems (Reciproc Blue and WaveOne Gold) at different lengths using a novel technique after in vivo clinical use. Materials and Methods Twelve different unused samples from each brand were accepted as reference values. For three different brands, the diameters of the files were measured by taking 12 samples used once, 12 samples used twice, and 12 samples used three times. Images were taken with a USB Micron Microscope, and file diameters were measured by determining limit values with Autocad. Result Reciproc Blue system was the most worn at apical 1 mm, and WaveOne Gold system was the most worn at apical 3 mm. PTN system exhibited the least wearing at any length. Moreover, less wearing was observed in the rotation motion than in the reciprocating motion. Conclusion In clinical practice, for the guttapercha to be fully adapted to the apical construction prepared according to the determined WL, the file should not undergo any wearing and volume reduction. Wearing—especially in the apical parts of the file—causes less preparation, and this situation could lead to apically obturation failure.

Abstract
The ideal root canal preparation is where the original canal morphology is maintained during the biomechanical preparation. Preparation of curved canals has always been a challenge to clinicians. Better results have been suggested for a single NiTi instrument with reciprocating motion than the conventional continuous rotation method in the preparation of curved root canals. Although the Neoniti rotary system is not suggested to be used with reciprocal motion, running a pilot study, we found that it could be possible. The present study aimed to investigate if shaping curved canals using the Neoniti rotary system with reciprocal motion leads to better results in terms of root canal transportation. One hundred acrylic j-shape canal simulator endoblocks were used in this study. Five preparation sequences were applied: GPS followed by A1#20 (GPS + A1#20), GPS followed by A1#20 and then A1#25 (GPS + A1#20 + A1#25), GPS followed by A1#25 (GPS + A1#25), hand file followed by A1#20 (hand file + A1#20), and GPS followed by A1#20 (with reciprocal motion) (GPS + A1#20(reciprocal)). Pictures were taken from blocks once before and once after preparation from two dimensions. Before-and-after pictures were superimposed in Photoshop software. Measurements were performed in Digimizer. The number of autoreverses and pecking motions was recorded after reviewing the recorded videos. Data were analyzed in SPSS, version 26. A p value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. The group GPS + A1#20 + A1#25 had more transportation compared with the others, at apical, middle, and coronal thirds not only in the frontal view but also in the lateral view. Other groups were not significantly different. The number of peckings and autoreverses was significantly less when A1#25 was used after GPS and A1#20. When A1#20 was used with reciprocal motion, it had less peckings compared with the same file with continuous rotation, and no autoreverses were observed in that group. Using Neoniti files with reciprocal motion might result in less instrument fatigue and favorable results, with respect to canal anatomy preservation. Using A1#20 before A1#25 also will decrease the stress on the instrument during preparation. However, this may lead to significantly more canal transportation.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the cyclic fatigue, torsional resistance and surface roughness of Reciproc R25 instruments in four different situations, namely as new instruments and as instruments tested after clinical preparation of one, two or three maxillary molars with four root canals. The total time required to perform each root canal preparation was recorded. Cyclic fatigue resistance was determined by the time to fracture using a customized testing device (n = 10 per group). The torsional test evaluated the torque and angle of rotation to failure according to ISO 3630-1 (n = 10 per group). The roughness of the working parts of new and used instruments was evaluated with a profilometer (n = 5 per group). Statistical analysis was performed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test. The level of significance was set at 5%. No fractures or deformations were observed after clinical use. Higher preparation time was needed during the third use of the instruments for all root canals (p < 0.05). There were no significant differences among the groups in regard to either cyclic fatigue or torsional resistance (p > 0.05). Regarding the roughness measurements, groove depth was higher on new and one- versus two- or three-maxillary-molar-prepared instruments (p < 0.05). It can be concluded that the clinical use of Reciproc instruments increased preparation time and decreased surface roughness. However, clinical use did not affect the cyclic fatigue or torsional resistance of the Reciproc instruments.

Abstract
The current study aimed to examine changes in the physical properties of conventional and CM nickel-titanium instruments after repeated clinical use, disinfection-sterilization processes, using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Sixty extracted mandibular molar mesial roots were used in this ex vivo study. The 60 teeth underwent final apical shaping (#25/.06) by the Revo-S SU (Revo-S Group: #25/.06; Micromega; n = 10) and Hyflex CM (Hyflex CM group: #25/.06; Coltene-Whaledent; n = 10) groups. One instrument of each group was used to shape six different teeth (Revo-S SU in 3 MB and 3 ML canals, and Hyflex CM in 3 MB and 3 ML canals), sequentially. The physical changes evident on the surfaces of the files after sequential use and sterilization processes were analyzed by SEM after the first, third, and sixth use. The first SEM examination was performed immediately after removal from the packages. Following first SEM examination, the files were sterilized before the first use as would be customary in practice. Qualitative evaluations were made by two evaluators, according to the following criteria: tip deformation, cutting edge deformation, debris, and microfracture. Revo-S showed a significant difference in cutting edge deformation, tip deformation, and microcrack formation, as compared to Hyflex CM. There was no significant difference between the groups in debris with the increasing number of uses. In this study, Hyflex CM (CM nickel-titanium) files showed better performance in terms of deformation and microcrack formation as the number of uses increased than did Revo-S (conventional nickel-titanium) files.

Abstract
One of the primary goals in endodontics is efficient cleaning and shaping of the root canal while maintaining its original configuration. Numerous studies highlight the advantage of using nickel-titanium instruments and the most important is their high flexibility and the ability to penetrate the curved canals. The aim of this study was to analyze the ultrastructure of the surface of nickel-titanium endodontic files before and after use. Eighty-four instruments were included in this study. The instruments were used one, three and six times for root canal preparation on extracted upper premolars. The analysis was performed based on the number of uses and the size of the instruments. Changes on flat surfaces in the grooves of the instruments, defects of the cutting edges and fractures were evaluated. The surface ultrastructure was analyzed on a scanning electron microscope (SEM). SEM analysis showed irregularities on the surfaces of the new instruments. Surface defects and damage of the cutting edges were present after the first use. After three uses, the damage was more evident in instruments of all sizes. After six uses, all instruments showed damage of the cutting edges, and a significant number of fractures were observed. Irregularities on the working parts are already noticed on the new endodontic instruments and originate from the production process. The first signs of damage appear after the first use. In order to prevent errors in clinical work during root canal preparation, it is recommended that the number of instruments uses should be limited.

Abstract
Surface alterations of instruments were investigated after single and multiple uses in the root canals. XP-endo Shaper (n = 5) and WaveOne GOLD (n = 5) files were used until the separation of the instruments occurred. The apical 3-mm and separated fragments were analysed by SEM to determine the changes in the instruments and the cross-sections of the separated fragments. Each group was divided into five subgroups: control, first, second, third and fourth molar. The results were reported descriptively for each group. In the XP-endo Shaper group, microcracks started to appear after the second use, and pitting and galvanic corrosion occurred after the third use. During the fourth use, microcracks propagated, resulting in ductile fracture while it happened after the third use in the second group. The single use of XP-endo Shaper and WaveOne GOLD was safe without any major changes on their surfaces. Reciprocating motion was not necessarily superior to full rotation motion.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to assess the role of cross section on cyclic fatigue resistance of One Shape, Revo-S SU, and Mtwo rotary files in continuous rotation and reciprocating motion in dynamic testing model. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 90 new rotary One Shape, Revo-S SU, and Mtwo files (ISO size 25, taper 0.06, length 25 mm) were subjected to continuous rotation or reciprocating motion. A cyclic fatigue testing device was fabricated with 60° angle of curvature and 5 mm radius. The dynamic testing of these files was performed using an electric motor which permitted the reproduction of pecking motion. All instruments were rotated or reciprocated until fracture occurred. The time taken for each instrument to fracture was recorded. All the fractured files were analyzed under a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to detect the mode of fracture. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way ANOVA, followed by Tukey's honestly significant difference post hoc test. RESULTS The time taken for instruments in reciprocating motion to fail under cyclic loading was significantly longer when compared with groups in continuous rotary motion. There was a statistically significant difference between Mtwo rotary and the other two groups in both continuous and reciprocating motion. One Shape rotary files recorded significantly longer duration to fracture resistance when compared with Revo-S SU files in both continuous and reciprocating motion. SEM observations showed that the instruments of all groups had undergone a ductile mode of fracture. CONCLUSION Reciprocating motion improved the cyclic fatigue resistance of all tested groups.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to investigate and compare the surface deformations of different NiTi rotary files after retreatment under scanning electron microscope (SEM). A total of 240 upper central incisor teeth were obturated with vertical compaction technique and divided into 6 groups. Root canals were retreated by ProTaper Next (PTN), Twisted File Adaptive (TFA), Reciproc (RPC), ProTaper Universal Retreatment (PTR), R-Endo and Mtwo-R NiTi rotary systems. The files investigated under SEM at different magnifications and photomicrographs were captured. The photomicrographs were classified and scored. Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests were performed for statistical analyze at 5% significance level. PTR and RPC groups were free of defects like file separation, curving and unwinding but PTN and TFA groups showed 50% file separation. According to the photomicrographs that were captured at high magnification; there were no statistically difference between groups at the coronal thirds of the files (P > 0.05), at the middle third PTN and TFA groups showed statistically more deformation than the other groups (P < 0.05). At the apical third Reciproc was statistically showed less deformation than the other all groups (P < 0.05). Within the limitation of this in vitro study, all NiTi files showed surface deformation in SEM observation after retreatment procedures. There was less deformation in PTR and RPC groups according to other.

Abstract
The aim was to examine the effect of retreatment process on the surface roughness and nickel titanium (NiTi) composition of ProTaper Universal Retreatment (PTUR; consists of 3 files; D1, D2, D3) and WaveOne Gold (WOG) (primary) instruments. Twenty extracted mandibular molar teeth with severe curved (30-40°) mesial roots were selected and divided into two groups (n = 10) based on the instrument used for the removal of the root canal filling. Before and after using the instruments in two canals, they were subjected to atomic force microscopy (AFM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectrophotometry (EDX) analysis. The EDX analysis data and roughness average (Ra) and root mean square (RMS) values were analyzed statistically using a one-way analysis of variance and post hoc Tukey's test at the 5% significant level. There was no significant difference between the new and used D1 and D2 PTUR and WOG instruments in terms of the Ni composition (p > .05). The Ti contents of the used D2 and D3 PTUR instruments were lower those of the new instruments (p < .05). In both new and used instruments, PTUR and WOG have no difference in terms of Ra and RMS values. (p > .05). The Ra and RMS values of the PTUR and WOG systems significantly increased after removal of the root canal filling (p < .05). The use of PTUR and WOG instruments for removal of root canal filling in severely curved root canals affected the surface topography of the files. The NiTi composition of the WOG instruments was unaffected by the retreatment process.

Abstract
The aim is to investigate the premature catastrophic fracture produced for different periods during clinical endodontic treatment of two brands of NiTi endodontic rotary instruments. 3 samples as-received, 6 samples used with patients for 2 and 7 h and 5 samples fractured were studied for each brand of endodontic NiTi rotary instruments. Transformation temperatures (Ms, Mf, As and Af) and enthalpies of transformation were determined by calorimetry. Critical stresses until fracture (σβ→SIM, σSIM→β) were obtained using an electromechanical testing machine. The samples were also visualized by Scanning Electron Microscopy. Calorimetric studies have shown an increase of the Ms and As transformation temperatures with time of use as well as a decrease of their stress transformations. Moreover, reverse transformation enthalpies decreased along the time. The enthalpies of transformation decreased because martensitic plates were anchored, which prevented their transformation to austenite; thus losing its superelastic effect. The stabilisation of the martensitic plates induced the collapse of the structure and so the main cause for the fracture. The heat treatment proposed has been increased the life in service of NiTi superelastic endodontic instruments recovering theirs superelastic effect.

Abstract
Background: Apical transportation (AT) of the root canal moves the physiologic canal terminus to a new location on the external root surface and results in the accumulation of debris and residual microorganisms due to inadequate cleaning and shaping of the canal end. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of AT following canal preparation with Mtwo and Reciproc R25 using cone-beam computed tomographic (CBCT). Materials and Methods: In this in vitro study, 40 mesiobuccal root canals of the maxillary molars with 19–22 mm length and (>40°) taper were prepared in two groups using Mtwo and Reciproc R25 rotary systems along with irrigation with 2.5% NaOCl. CBCT scans were obtained of the canals before and after preparation under similar conditions, and the values were measured using the device software. The amount of AT was measured according to Gambill et al. Data were analyzed using SPSS 17 and Chi-square and t-tests. P < 0.05 was considered significant. Results: Both systems caused some degrees of AT. No significant difference was found between the two systems in terms of the amount and direction of AT (P > 0.05); overall, the frequency of AT toward the mesial wall was greater than that toward the distal direction. However, this difference was not statistically significant. Conclusion: The mean amount of AT and the ability to keep the instruments in severely curved canals were not significantly different in canals prepared by Mtwo and Reciproc rotary systems. Thus, these systems can be used in the clinical setting with the lowest risk of AT.

Abstract
Objectives To examine the surface topography of intact WaveOne (WO; Dentsply Sirona Endodontics) and WaveOne Gold (WOG; Dentsply Sirona Endodontics) nickel-titanium rotary files and to evaluate the presence of alterations to the surface topography after root canal preparations of severely curved root canals in molar teeth. Materials and Methods Forty-eight severely curved canals of extracted molar teeth were divided into 2 groups (n = 24/each group). In group 1, the canals were prepared using WO and in group 2, the canals were prepared using WOG files. After the preparation of 3 root canals, instruments were subjected to atomic force microscopy analysis. Average roughness and root mean square values were chosen to investigate the surface features of endodontic files. The data was analyzed using one-way analysis of variance and post hoc Tamhane's tests at 5% significant level. Results The surface roughness values of WO and WOG files significantly changed after use in root canals (p < 0.05). The used WOG files exhibited higher surface roughness change when compared with the used WO files (p < 0.05). Conclusions Using WO and WOG Primary files in 3 root canals affected the surface topography of the files. After being used in root canals, the WOG files showed a higher level of surface porosity value than the WO files.

Abstract
Background One of the major innovations in endodontics has been the introduction of nickel-titanium (NiTi) alloy. This study evaluated the surface topographical changes of two different surface treatments rotary instrument after instrumentation and sterilization. Material and Methods 240 Extracted teeth were included in this study. 90 new AlphaKite and Revo-S NiTi rotary instruments were selected and divided into two groups (Group A 45 AlphaKite and group B 45 Revo-S). Each group were divided into three subgroups: (A1, B1) n=5 files were used as a control, (A2,B2) n=20 files were used to prepare three root canals using endodontic rotary motor then sterilized by autoclave for one cycle under 121°C at 15 psi for 30 minutes and (A3,B3) n=20 files were used to prepare nine root canals using the same rotary system then sterilized by autoclave for three cycles under 121°C at 15 psi for 30 minutes. Files were examined under scanning electron microscopy. Results On examining the AlphaKite, A1 revealed gross machining grooves on their surface with no pits, A2 showed disruption of cutting and A3 showed microcracks and deepening of the machining grooves. B1 showed a smoother surface with few machining grooves, B2 showed dulling and blunting of the cutting edges was predominant and B3 files showed plastic deformation in the form of unwinding of the flutes. Conclusions The defects were less distributed along the electropolished Revo-S files than the physical vapor deposition AlphaKite. Abstract
Objectives To determine the incidence of crack formation and propagation in apical root dentin after retreatment procedures performed using ProTaper Universal Retreatment (PTR), Mtwo-R, ProTaper Next (PTN), and Twisted File Adaptive (TFA) systems. Materials and Methods The study consisted of 120 extracted mandibular premolars. One millimeter from the apex of each tooth was ground perpendicular to the long axis of the tooth, and the apical surface was polished. Twenty teeth served as the negative control group. One hundred teeth were prepared, obturated, and then divided into 5 retreatment groups. The retreatment procedures were performed using the following files: PTR, Mtwo-R, PTN, TFA, and hand files. After filling material removal, apical enlargement was done using apical size 0.50 mm ProTaper Universal (PTU), Mtwo, PTN, TFA, and hand files. Digital images of the apical root surfaces were recorded before preparation, after preparation, after obturation, after filling removal, and after apical enlargement using a stereomicroscope. The images were then inspected for the presence of new apical cracks and crack propagation. Data were analyzed with χ2 tests using SPSS 21.0 software. Results New cracks and crack propagation occurred in all the experimental groups during the retreatment process. Nickel-titanium rotary file systems caused significantly more apical crack formation and propagation than the hand files. The PTU system caused significantly more apical cracks than the other groups after the apical enlargement stage. Conclusions This study showed that retreatment procedures and apical enlargement after the use of retreatment files can cause crack formation and propagation in apical dentin.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to undertake a qualitative and quantitative assessment of nanoscale alterations and wear on the surfaces of nickel-titanium (NiTi) endodontic instruments, before and after use, through a high-resolution, noncontact, three-dimensional optical profiler, and to verify the accuracy of the evaluation method. Cutting blade surfaces of two different brands of NiTi endodontic instruments, Reciproc R25 (n = 5) and WaveOne Primary (n = 5), were examined and compared before and after two uses in simulated root canals made in clear resin blocks. The analyses were performed on three-dimensional images which were obtained from surface areas measuring 211 × 211 µm, located 3 mm from their tips. The quantitative evaluation of the samples was conducted before and after the first and second usage, by the recordings of three amplitude parameters. The data were subjected to statistical analysis at a 5% level of significance. The results revealed statistically significant increases in the surface wear of both instruments groups after the second use. The presence of irregularities was found on the surface topography of all the instruments, before and after use. Regardless of the evaluation stage, most of the defects were observed in the WaveOne instruments. The three-dimensional technique was suitable and effective for the accurate investigation of the same surfaces of the instruments in different periods of time.

Abstract
Background Many new rotary files systems have been introduced, however, limited research has been conducted related to the surface irregularities of these files and if these have any effects on the files themselves. Hence, the aim of the present study was to analyze surface irregularities of the ProTaper® Universal rotary files (PTU) and the ProTaper Next™ rotary files (PTN) before and after instrumentation in curved canals. The main objective was to investigate the nature of these irregularities and how they might influence the use and fracture of rotary files during root-canal treatments. Material and Methods The files were examined pre-operatively using a stereomicroscope and scanning electron microscopy(SEM) to analyze surface imperfections and the presence of particles. Mesial roots of forty extracted mandibular molars were selected. Each instrument was used to prepare one of the mesial canals. The files were then rinsed with alcohol, and autoclaved and analyzed again. Results Of the 80 files used in this study, five files fractured, five files unwound and seven files were curved or bent and they all belonged to the PTU group. Irregularities and debris could be visualized with the SEM on both unused PTU and PTN files. Most of the debris was found associated with deeper milling grooves and defects on the surface of the metal. Surface analysis of the files that were used and sterilized were performed and the SEM images demonstrated organic debris, metal flash, and crack formation and initiation of fractures for both file types. All files showed machining grooves, metal flash, debris, and defects on cutting edges. Conclusions These irregularities appear to be critical in the accumulation of debris and initiation of fatigue and crack propagation within the NiTi alloy. The accumulation of debris could be a concern due to the potential exchange of organic debris between patients. Key words:ProTaper® Universal, ProTaper Next™, surface characteristics, SEM.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of 50% hydrofluoric acid (HF) surface treatment on the cyclic fatigue resistance (CFR) of K3 NiTi instruments. Twenty as-received and twenty HF-treated K3 NiTi instruments were compared in CFR. The surface texture and fracture surface of two instrument groups were examined with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Additionally, any change of Ni and Ti composition from both instrument groups was investigated using energy dispersive spectrometry. The results were analyzed with t-test. The HF-treated K3 group showed statistically higher cyclic fatigue resistance than as-received K3 group (P < 0.05). HF-treated K3 instruments showed smoother and rounded surface compared to as-received K3 under SEM observation. The fracture surfaces of both groups showed typical patterns of cyclic fatigue fracture. There was no difference in surface Ni and Ti composition between two groups. HF treatment of K3 instruments smoothed the file surface and increased the cyclic fatigue resistance, while it had no effect on surface ion composition and the file fracture pattern.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of the present study was to investigate the incidence of dentinal microcracks caused by different preparation techniques. MATERIALS AND METHODS 120 extracted human mandibular incisor teeth were divided into five experimental groups and one control group (n = 20): Group 1: Hand preparation with balanced force technique up to #25 K-file. Group 2: Preparation with only ProTaper F2 instrument in a reciprocating movement. Group 3: Preparation with Reciproc R25 instrument in a reciprocating movement. Group 4: Preparation with ProTaper instruments up to F2 instrument. Group 5: Preparation with ProTaper Next instruments up to X2 instrument. No procedure was applied to control group. The roots were sectioned horizontally at 3, 6 and 9 mm from the apex and examined. Absence or presence of dentinal microcracks was noted. RESULTS The Chi-square test was performed to compare the appearance of cracked roots between all groups. There were no significant differences among the groups (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, except the hand file and control group, all experimental groups showed microcrack formations.

Abstract
This report introduces a novel technique that allows a safe and predictable canal negotiation, creation of a glide path and canal preparation with reciprocating nickel-titanium or stainless steel engine-driven instruments in canals where the use of rotary and the newly developed reciprocating instruments is contraindicated. In this novel technique, the instruments are used in reciprocating motion with very small angles. Hand files are not used regardless of the complexity of the canal anatomy. It also allows achieving predictable results in canal negotiation and glide path creation in challenging canals without the risk of instrument fracture.

Abstract
Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the effects of a single twisted file (TF) instrument in three different operation modes on the preparation of curved root canals in human molars and to explore a new possible method in canal shaping in the clinic setting. Materials and Methods: A total of 105 selected root canals with an angle of curvature ranging from 20° to 35° were divided into the following three groups with 35 samples each according to the different operation mode in canal preparation: “continuous rotation-500” (CR, 500 rpm), reciprocating movement-300 (RM-300 rpm) and CR-300 rpm. Root canals were prepared by single file (a size 25/0.06 TF). The pre- and post-instrumented images of the sections were scanned using a cone-beam computed tomography scanner to measure the root transportation and centering ratio. The data were evaluated at 1.5 mm, 3.0 mm and 6.0 mm positions from the apex. The significance level was set at P < 0.05. Results: The results showed a statistically significant difference in root transportation that was only found in cross-sections 3.0 mm from the anatomic apex between group “CR-500” and group “CR-300.” In addition, a significant difference in centering ratio was found between group “RM-300” and group “CR-300.” There was no significant difference in the two indices among the three groups at cross-sections 1.5 mm and 6 mm from the apex. Conclusions: Under the three conditions of this study, the continuous rotation mode has better shaping ability in root canal preparation than the RM mode when used with a TF single file (size 25/0.06).

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of glide path preparation on the surface topography changes of WaveOne and OneShape single files using atomic force microscopy analysis. Two commercially available brands of single file systems were analyzed, including 15 specimens/brand as following: Group I; WaveOne 0.08/25 (Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland) and Group II; OneShape 0.06/25 (Micro Mega, Besançon, France). In each group, 3 new files were subjected to AFM analysis as received from manufacturer, and 12 files were analyzed after preparation of root canals. A total of 20 human maxillary molar teeth were selected. In each group, 12 files were divided into 4 subgroups according to instruments that were used in one or three root canals with or without a previous glide path (n = 3). After preparation the surface analysis of single files was performed on 11 different points located along a 3-mm section starting at the tip of each file using AFM. Root mean square (RMS) values were recorded to investigate the surface features of endodontic files. The differences between RMS values were tested by one-way ANOVA. There was no statistically significant difference between the groups (p > 0.05). Creation of a glide path did not affect the surface topography of single file systems.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Nickel-titanium files often separate because of mechanical fatigue. The purpose of this study was to determine safe preparation techniques for separated file removal by using ultrasonics. METHODS Fifty nickel-titanium file fragments were divided into 5 groups. An ultrasonic tip was activated on a file fragment positioned between dentin blocks simulating several canal conditions: Group 1 consisted of the fragment protruding from a pair of straight dentin blocks. For group 2, the fragment was also positioned between 2 straight dentin blocks except one block was positioned 1 mm more apically than the other block, simulating a troughed area that is often created during file removal attempts. For groups 3-5, the fragment was positioned similarly as group 2 but between blocks with 30°, 45°, and 60° curvatures, respectively. The time it took for secondary fracture to occur was recorded, and the data were statistically analyzed. RESULTS Fragments with dentin wall supporting on the opposite side of ultrasonic activation site resisted fracture significantly longer than those without it. Fragments in 30° and 45° curved blocks took significantly longer to fracture than the other groups (Fisher protected least significant difference, P < .05). CONCLUSIONS Secondary fracture of separated files appeared to be reduced when the ultrasonic tip was applied to the inner curvature of the canal.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of altering the reciprocation range of the WaveOne instrument (Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland) on its fatigue life and shaping ability regarding tendency for canal transportation, the canal centering ratio, and preparation time. METHODS Thirty primary WaveOne instruments were divided into 3 equal groups according to the reciprocation range used: G1: 150 counterclockwise (CCW)-30 clockwise (CW), G2: 120 CCW-30 CW, and G3: 90 CCW-45 CW. They were activated in a cyclic fatigue testing device until fracture. The time to fracture and the length of the fractured tip were recorded and registered. To assess the shaping ability, 30 mesiobuccal canals of mandibular molars were prepared using the same reciprocation ranges. Canals were scanned using cone-beam computed tomography scanning before and after preparation to evaluate root canal transportation and the canal centering ratio at 1, 4, and 7 mm from the apex. The time taken to complete canal preparation was also recorded. The mean ± standard deviation values were analyzed using analysis of variance and the Tukey post hoc test. The significance level was set at P < .05. RESULTS The time to fracture recorded increased as the reciprocation range decreased, and this was significant for the 90 CCW-45 CW group (P < .05). Regarding preparation time, it increased significantly as the reciprocation range was decreased (P < .05). Results for canal transportation and the canal centering ratio showed that at 1 mm from the apex there were no significant differences between the experimental groups. For the other studied levels, the 150 CCW-30 CW group had the highest mean for canal transportation and the lowest mean for the canal centering ratio, which was statistically significant in comparison with the other experimental groups (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS Decreasing the reciprocation range of WaveOne instruments resulted in an increased cyclic fatigue resistance with less canal transportation and more centered preparations but with longer preparation times.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study examined the effect of the manufacturing methods (ground, electropolished, and twisted) and the cross-sectional area (CSA) of nickel-titanium (NiTi) rotary instruments on their cyclic fatigue resistance. STUDY DESIGN A total of 80 NiTi rotary instruments (ISO 25/.06 taper) from 4 brands (K3, ProFile, RaCe, and TF) were rotated in a simulated root canal with pecking motion until fracture. The number of cycles to failure (NCF) was calculated. The CSA at 3 mm from the tip of new instruments of each brand was calculated. The correlation between the CSA and NCF was evaluated. All fractured surfaces were analyzed using a scanning electron microscope to determine the fracture mode. RESULTS The TF instruments were the most resistant to fatigue failure. The resistance to cyclic failure increased with decreasing CSA. All fractured surfaces showed the coexistence of ductile and brittle properties. CONCLUSION The CSA had a significant effect on the fatigue resistance of NiTi rotary instruments.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Single use of endodontic nickel-titanium (NiTi) instruments has been recommended to reduce instrument fatigue and the possibility of cross-contamination. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the defects of three NiTi rotary systems (ProFile series 29 [Dentsply Tulsa Dental Products, Tulsa, OK], ProFile [Dentsply Tulsa Dental Products], and ProTaper [Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland]) that were discarded after single use by two endodontic clinics. METHODS A total of 1,071 ProFile .04, 432 ProFile series 29 .04, and 1,895 ProTaper rotary instruments were collected over 12 months and analyzed. These discarded files were ultrasonically cleaned and autoclaved. The lateral view of the deformed instruments and fracture surface of the separated instruments were examined by scanning electron microscopy. Qualitative X-ray energy-dispersive spectrophotometric (EDS) spot analyses were performed on particles adherent to the surface and those apparently wedged in surface microcracks. RESULTS There were no fractures or deformations in the ProFile Series 29. The overall prevalence of deformation was 2.9% in ProTaper and 0.75% in ProFile. The incidence of instrument separation was 0.26% in ProTaper, whereas no fractures occurred in ProFile instruments. The majority of instrument defects occurred in size 25 (6/8) for ProFile and in Sx for ProTaper (22/60). The separated ProTaper instruments failed mostly because of shear stress. Some surface deposits and microcracks were found in single-use NiTi instruments. EDS indicated that surface deposits may be dentin. CONCLUSION The risk of NiTi rotary instrument fracture in the canal is low when a new instrument is used by experienced endodontists. The most common cause of failure, albeit rare, was shear failure.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Active parts and tips of various new stainless steel and nickel-titanium endodontic instruments can be coated with fragments or metal residues, which can become detached during endodontic treatment. These fragments may obstruct the root canals or even reach the periapical tissue during biomechanical preparation and should be removed before clinical use. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of metal residues on both new stainless steel and nickel-titanium endodontic instruments, and to determine the cleaning efficacy of ultrasound using distilled water or disinfectant solution for removing these residues. METHODS Forty-eight stainless steel and nickel-titanium instruments were carefully removed from their original packages with dental tweezers, in order to avoid any contact with the cutting flutes and tips. The instruments were evaluated in term of metal debris presence, using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and x-ray energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The instruments were then removed from the electron microscopy analysis stubs and placed in an ultrasonic bath for 15 minutes at a frequency of 28 kHz, using distilled water or disinfectant solution. The surfaces of the instruments were re-evaluated after cleaning. RESULTS Before ultrasound cleaning, a larger amount of metal debris was observed on the nickel-titanium endodontic instruments when compared to those made of stainless steel. The presence of metal particles on the instruments was evaluated by using EDS analysis. The use of ultrasound was effective in removing the metal residues from both types of endodontic instrument surfaces. CONCLUSION The use of ultrasound proved to be an efficient method for the removal of metal particles from the surface of new stainless steel and nickel-titanium endodontic instruments.

Abstract
The study was aimed to compare the stress distribution during simulated root canal shaping and to estimate the residual stress thereafter for some nickel-titanium rotary instruments. Three brands of instruments (ProFile, ProTaper, and ProTaper Universal; Dentsply Maillefer) were scanned with micro-computed tomography to produce a real-size, 3-dimensional model for each. The stresses on the instrument during simulated shaping of a root canal were analyzed numerically by using a 3-dimensional finite-element package, taking into account the nonlinear mechanical behavior of the nickel-titanium material. From the simulation, the original ProTaper design showed the greatest pull in the apical direction and the highest reaction torque from the root canal wall, whereas ProFile showed the least. In ProTaper, stresses were concentrated at the cutting edge, and the residual stress reached a level close to the critical stress for phase transformation of the material. The residual stress was highest in ProTaper followed by ProTaper Universal and ProFile.
