Stress coping strategy in Japanese patients with eating disorders: relationship with bulimic and impulsive behaviors

Differences in the use of emotion regulation strategies between anorexia and bulimia nervosa: A systematic review and meta-analysis

OBJECTIVE

Research has identified abnormal emotion regulation (ER) as an underlying mechanism in the onset and maintenance of eating disorders. Yet, it still remains unclear whether different forms of ER, adaptive and maladaptive strategies, are similar across categories of eating disorders.

METHOD

A systematic review and meta-analysis were carried out to look at ER differences between anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN), two common eating disorder pathologies with different eating patterns.

RESULTS

41 studies were included in the meta-analysis. The results revealed no differences in the use of maladaptive ER strategies between individuals with AN and BN, however patients with AN tend to use less adaptive ER strategies as compared to patients with BN.

CONCLUSIONS

Making less use of adaptive strategies in AN might be due to low body weight and high levels of alexithymia which define AN. In order to improve treatment outcome in individuals suffering from AN, these findings suggest to focus more on improving the use of adaptive ER strategies.

Coping strategies and stress-induced natural killer cell redistribution in women with eating disorders

BACKGROUND

Patients with eating disorders (ED) are very sensitive and responsive to psychosocial stress. Stress response includes changes in immune cell distribution and may be modulated by the capability to cope with stressors. Thus, the present study sought to analyze the association between coping strategies and immune response (natural killer [NK] cell redistribution following psychosocial stress) in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) and healthy controls (HC).

METHOD

Twenty-four AN patients, 29 BN patients, and 58 HC were studied. A multidimensional assessment tool, the COPE Inventory, was used to assess coping strategies. The number of NK cells was quantified in peripheral blood before and after the application of the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST). Potentially mediating variables, such as weight status, severity of eating pathology, depression, anxiety, and impulsivity were controlled.

RESULTS

The three groups differed in intensity and direction of cell redistribution: The TSST was followed in BN patients by a significant decrease in the number of NK cells, whereas HC displayed a moderate decrease and AN a clear increase. Specific correlations between coping strategies and NK cell mobilization were found, especially in BN patients (positive for "planning" and negative for "substance abuse").

CONCLUSION

Recognition and subsequent modification of the dysfunctional coping strategies used by patients with ED could contribute to improving their immune status, strengthening their resilience and increasing their ability to overcome the disease.

Cohort survey of college students' eating attitudes: interventions for depressive symptoms and stress coping were key factors for preventing bulimia in a subthreshold group

Background

The aim of this study was to examine the necessity of early intervention for students with potential bulimia by investigating how the eating attitudes of college students change and examining the relation between bulimic symptoms and depressive symptoms or the ability to cope with stress.

Methods

The study participants were students who entered Hiroshima University in 2014. This study was conducted at two time points: Time-1 in 2014 and Time-2 in 2017. The Eating Attitudes Test-26 (EAT-26), Bulimic Inventory Test, Edinburgh (BITE), Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), and Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS) were administered at Times 1 and 2, and the responses were compared between the time points. Next, we compared the BDI-II scores of the BITE improved and worsened groups. In addition, we divided the participants into a clinical group, subthreshold group, and healthy group based on the BITE score at Time-1to compared their depressive symptoms and the ability to cope with stress.

Results

Significantly higher BITE and BDI-II scores were recorded for both males and females at Time-2 than at Time-1. The BDI-II score at Time-1 was significantly higher in the BITE worsened group than in the BITE improved group. The BDI-II scores at Time-1 were significantly higher for both males and females in the subthreshold group than in the healthy group. Furthermore, significantly higher CISS-T and CISS-E scores were recorded at Time-1 for females in the subthreshold group than for females in the healthy group.

Conclusions

Based on these results, intervention for students the subthreshold group is important, and the key to intervention may be to address not only eating behaviors but also depressive symptoms and stress coping.

Associations of neuroticism-impulsivity and coping with binge eating in a nationally representative sample of adolescents in the United States

OBJECTIVE

Binge eating behavior is a public health concern due to its negative physical and mental health consequences. Little is known about the interplay of personality traits, coping styles, and binge eating in the general adolescent population. We examined the associations among the combination of neuroticism and impulsivity (NI), maladaptive coping styles (poor problem solving, distraction, and escape-avoidance), and lifetime prevalence of binge eating in a nationally representative sample of U.S. adolescents. We also explored coping as a moderator of the NI-lifetime binge eating association and gender as a moderator of the NI-coping associations and coping-lifetime binge eating associations.

METHODS

We used data from the National Comorbidity Survey: Adolescent Supplement (NCS-A: 2001-2004), a cross-sectional nationally representative study of adolescents aged 13 to 18years (n=10,028). We studied the associations of NI and coping with lifetime binge eating using multivariate regression models.

RESULTS

High NI was significantly associated with all three coping styles, especially escape-avoidance (β=3.96, confidence interval [CI]=3.62, 4.29, p<0.001). Gender was a significant moderator of the NI-distraction coping association (β=-0.68, CI=-1.33, -0.03, p=0.041), indicating a stronger association in males (β=1.20, CI=0.81, 1.58, p<0.001) than females (β=0.53, CI=0.02, 1.03, p=0.042). Lifetime prevalence of binge eating was 1.13 times higher with increased escape-avoidance coping (CI=1.10, 1.18, p<0.001).

DISCUSSION

Our findings indicate significant associations among high NI, increased escape-avoidance coping, and higher lifetime prevalence of binge eating in adolescents. Findings of our study have potential to inform development of interventions that target modification of maladaptive personality traits and coping styles to reduce problematic eating.

Emotion generation and regulation in anorexia nervosa: a systematic review and meta-analysis of self-report data

This systematic review sought to examine the generation and regulation of emotion in people with Anorexia Nervosa (AN). Key databases (Medline, Embase, PsychINFO and Web of Science) were searched for peer-reviewed articles published by March 2015 yielding 131 studies relevant to emotion generation and emotion regulation (ER) processes as defined by Gross (1998). Meta-analyses determined pooled group differences between AN and healthy control (HC) groups. More maladaptive schemata were reported by people with AN than HCs, with largest pooled effects for defectiveness/shame (d=2.81), subjugation (d=1.59) and social isolation (d=1.66). Poorer awareness of and clarity over emotion generated and some elevated emotionality (disgust and shame) were reported. A greater use of 'maladaptive' ER strategies was reported by people with AN than HCs, alongside less use of 'adaptive' strategies. Pooled differences of particularly large effect were observed for: experiential avoidance (d=1.00), negative problem-solving style (d=1.06), external/social comparison (d=1.25), submissiveness (d=1.16), attention concentration (worry/rumination; d=1.44) and emotion suppression (d=1.15), particularly to avoid conflict (d=1.54). These data support the notion that emotion regulation difficulties are a factor in AN and support use of associated cognitive-affective models. The implications of these findings for further understanding AN, and developing models and related psychological interventions are discussed.

Anxiety and compulsion patterns in the maintenance of bingeing/purging behaviours by individuals with bulimia nervosa

Bulimia nervosa, if not treated or if treated unsuccessfully, can develop into a severe and enduring eating disorder. Analysis of self-management of Seed-BN indicates that individuals frequently experience significant negative mental health issues and a complex relationship with medication management. Two discrete patterns of coping strategies to prevent deterioration in distressing symptoms were in evidence, controlled vomiting, which was related to the management of anxiety, and uncontrolled vomiting due to more dominant self-management of compulsive acts. The implications for nursing revolve around accurate assessment of vomiting and subsequent engagement by the individual with their coping strategies in relation to perceived deterioration in distressing symptoms. This paper reports on the results of a study into the self-reported coping strategies employed by a small sample (n = 12) of individuals diagnosed with bulimia nervosa purging sub-type, severe and enduring eating disorder (Seed-BN), referred to an outpatient clinic for psychotherapy. Data collection focused on the vomiting activities of participants through analysis of their self-management from diary extracts, which recorded vomiting patterns. Participants all experienced significant mental health issues, had complex histories of BN over a prolonged period, difficulties maintaining relationships, and many had an additional history of substance misuse including dependence on prescription drugs. The study findings indicated two different self-management strategies, anxiety containment and compulsion maintenance. There was a clear association between anxiety and controlled weekly vomiting patterns compared with compulsion and daily vomiting patterns. The implications for nursing practice relate to the potential for assessment of differences in vomiting patterns to indicate self-management status and subsequent interventions focusing on either anxiety or compulsive patterns.

Comparing Japanese College Students’ and U.S. College Students’ Disordered Eating, Distress, and Psychological Inflexibility

The present study investigated whether psychological inflexibility is related to disordered eating in Japanese undergraduate students and compared the strength and pattern of the associations with effects in a sample of undergraduate students from the United States. Data from 200 Japanese ( nfemale = 100) and 481 U.S. ( nfemale = 380) college students were used. Contrary to prediction, female gender and higher body mass index (BMI), but not psychological inflexibility, were uniquely related to higher levels of disordered eating while controlling for age and psychological distress in the Japanese group. In the U.S. group, greater psychological inflexibility was the only variable that was uniquely related to higher levels of disordered eating after controlling for other study variables. Our findings suggest that psychological inflexibility may not be a useful concept for understanding disordered eating within Japanese college students.

A double burden: emotional eating and lack of cognitive reappraisal in eating disordered women

OBJECTIVE

To examine the influence of emotional eating and lack of cognitive reappraisal on eating pathology in women with binge-purge and restricting type eating disorders.

METHOD

Women with a diagnosis of anorexia or bulimia nervosa according to the DSM-IV-tr (n = 50) and non-clinical women without eating disorders (n = 52) were asked about emotional eating tendencies, adaptive emotion regulation strategies (cognitive reappraisal) and eating pathology symptoms.

RESULTS

In binge-purging women, emotional eating with limited use of cognitive reappraisal predicted level of eating pathology but not in the restricting and non-clinical women.

DISCUSSION

Emotional eating tendencies in combination with a low tendency to use cognitive reappraisal may influence the severity of eating pathology in individuals with binge-purge behaviours. Evidently, patients with these characteristics require a therapy that addresses adaptive emotion regulation skills.

Alcoholics Anonymous attendance, decreases in impulsivity and drinking and psychosocial outcomes over 16 years: moderated-mediation from a developmental perspective

AIMS

To examine whether decreases in impulsivity account for links between Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) attendance and better drinking and psychosocial outcomes, and whether these mediational 'effects' are conditional on age.

DESIGN

A naturalistic study in which individuals were assessed at baseline, and 1, 8 and 16 years later.

SETTING

Participants initiated help-seeking through the alcohol intervention system (detoxification programs, information and referral centers).

PARTICIPANTS

Individuals with alcohol use disorders and no prior history of substance abuse treatment at baseline [n=628; 47% women; mean age=34.7 years (standard deviation=9.4)].

MEASUREMENTS

Self-reports of impulsivity and drinking pattern at baseline and year 1, duration of AA (number of weeks) in year 1 and drinking (alcohol use problems, self-efficacy to resist drinking) and psychosocial outcomes (emotional discharge coping, social support) at baseline and follow-ups.

FINDINGS

Controlling for changes in drinking pattern, decreases in impulsivity were associated with fewer alcohol use problems, better coping and greater social support and self-efficacy at year 1, and better coping and greater social support at year 8. Decreases in impulsivity statistically mediated associations between longer AA duration and improvements on all year 1 outcomes and indirect effects were moderated by participant age (significant only for individuals 25 years of age or younger).

CONCLUSIONS

Decreased impulsivity appears to mediate reductions in alcohol-related problems over 8 years in people attending Alcoholics Anonymous.

Athletic identity and disordered eating in obligatory and non-obligatory runners

Athletic identity is the extent to which an individual identifies with being an athlete. Strong "running" role identity may contribute to increased restrictive dieting behaviours, potentially placing such individuals at risk for eating disorders. In this study, we examined differences in eating and exercise behaviours/attitudes and athletic identity in obligatory versus non-obligatory runners. Male and female participants completed a battery of questionnaires including the Eating Disorder Inventory, Obligatory Exercise Questionnaire (OEQ), and Athletic Identity Measurement Scale (AIMS). OEQ scores ≥50 were indicative of obligatory exercise. The non-obligatory runners (n = 82) and obligatory runners (n = 91) were compared on the various measures. Obligatory runners scored significantly higher (P < 0.002) on all of the eating attitudes/disorder measures, and the AIMS (P ≤ 0.006). Scores on the AIMS were correlated with all disordered eating measures (P < 0.05). Exercising to maintain identification with the running role may be associated with pathological eating and training practices.

Coping and social support as potential moderators of the relation between anxiety and eating disorder symptomatology

Trait anxiety and eating disorder (ED) symptomatology are often thought to be inextricably linked. Because anxiety often precedes an ED, predicts poor outcome, and persists even after recovery from an ED, it is important to examine whether certain factors have the ability to potentially attenuate anxiety's effect on eating pathology. In the current study, we examined two possible moderating factors: coping skills and social support. Participants were 96 females seen at one point for an ED at a Midwestern clinic, including 53 with a current ED diagnosis and 43 who no longer met criteria for an ED and who were at varying levels of recovery. Results revealed that emotion-oriented coping moderated the relation between anxiety and ED symptoms. Individuals who were high in trait anxiety and who reported low levels of emotion-oriented coping reported much lower levels of ED symptomatology than those with high trait anxiety and high emotion-oriented coping. Contrary to our hypotheses, task-oriented coping, avoidance-oriented coping, and perceived social support (total, family, friend, and special person) did not emerge as moderators of the relation between trait anxiety and eating pathology. Results provide growing support that factors that interact with anxiety can lessen anxiety's effect on eating pathology. Implications for treatment and future directions are discussed.

A systematic review of impulsivity in eating disorders

The purpose of this paper is to conduct a systematic review of the current literature that examines impulsivity in individuals with eating disorders (ED). Studies were obtained from Embase, Pubmed and Psycinfo, and were included if they assessed impulsivity in individuals over 18 years of age with an ED diagnosis and published in the last 10 years. The methodological quality of the studies was rated. Twelve studies were included in this review, with methodological quality varying across studies. Findings suggest that impulsivity is best assessed multi-modally, with a combination of self-report, behavioural and physiological measures. In general, impulsivity was found to differentiate individuals with EDs from controls, as well as across diagnostic subtypes. The current findings have important clinical implications for our understanding and treatment of both impulsivity and eating disorders.

The role of depression and anxiety in impulsive and obsessive-compulsive behaviors among anorexic and bulimic patients

Eating disorders are believed to range across a spectrum of varying degrees of obsessive-compulsive and impulsive behavior. Sixty anorexic (mean age = 19.8; sd = 5.9) and 109 bulimic (mean age = 26.9; sd = 11.3) female patients completed self-report questionnaires assessing obsessive-compulsiveness, impulsivity, depression and anxiety, as well as two eating disorder scales. Results yielded significantly higher levels of impulsivity and negative body image in the bulimic compared to the anorexic group. Regression analysis predicting impulsivity showed that bulimia and negative body image were the main contributors. Regression analysis for predicting obsessive-compulsive behavior suggested that depression and anxiety obscure the link between anorexia and obsessive-compulsive behavior, and a high BMI intensifies the association between anxiety and obsessive-compulsive behavior. The high rates of both impulsivity and obsessive-compulsiveness found in both groups, and their association with the severity of the eating disorder, may suggest that impulsivity and obsessive-compulsiveness are not mutually exclusive and can both be found among anorexic and bulimic patients.

Situational Variability of Experiential and Rational Information-Processing Styles in Stressful Situations

In this study, we investigated the reliability and validity of the Perceived Modes of Processing Inventory (PMPI) by Burns and D’Zurilla, which measures two types of information processing, experiential and rational. We administered the dispositional and situation-specific format of the PMPI to a sample of 64 eating-disorder (ED) patients. In the situation-specific format we manipulated the nature of the situation and the degree of emotional involvement. Results show a good reliability and validity of the dispositional and situation-specific format of the PMPI. The situation-specific format of the PMPI showed that ED patients show more rational than experiential processing in practical situations, and more experiential processing in interpersonal situations. These differences were more pronounced in situations with high emotional involvement. Finally, assessed situation-specific processing styles predicted particular ED-related behaviors and coping styles. The implications of the findings for therapeutic interventions are discussed.

Relations between negative affect, coping, and emotional eating

The study was designed to examine the relations between negative affect, coping, and emotional eating. It was tested whether emotion-oriented coping and avoidance distraction, alone or in interaction with negative affect, were related to increased levels of emotional eating. Participants were 125 eating-disordered women and 132 women representing a community population. Measures included the Positive and Negative Affectivity Schedule (PANAS), the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS), and the Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire (DEBQ). Both emotion-oriented coping and avoidance distraction were related to emotional eating, while controlling for levels of negative affect. Negative affect did not have a unique contribution to emotional eating over and above emotion-oriented coping or avoidance distraction. The findings suggest that emotional eating is related to reliance on emotion-oriented coping and avoidance distraction in eating-disordered women as well as in relatively healthy women.

The eating disturbed spectrum in relation with coping and interpersonal functioning

Although much has been written with regards to the interpersonal functioning of eating-disordered women, research in the domain of eating disorders (ED) has still overlooked the complex relationships between stressful life events, coping styles, social and marital support while considering the ED spectrum.

OBJECTIVE

This study evaluates to what extent stressful life events, coping styles, and social support represent useful concepts for differentiating between four groups of participants with varying severity of eating preoccupations and disturbances.

METHOD

One hundred twenty-five participants were divided into four groups: 40 women suffering from ED, 21 women in remission from an ED, 33 women with intense weight and shape preoccupations, and 31 women without eating preoccupations. Each participant completed the Eating Disorder Evaluation, as well as questionnaires concerning stressful life events, coping styles, social support, and couple satisfaction.

RESULTS

There were significant differences between the groups in terms of negative impact of stressful events, social support, as well as task-oriented and emotion-oriented coping styles. Significant differences were not found between the groups for couple satisfaction.

CONCLUSION

It appears that accurate cognitive appraisal of stressful situations, adaptive coping styles and improvement of the social network represent interesting dimensions to include in prevention and treatment programs for ED. Moreover, for women in remission from an ED, an effective relapse prevention strategy could be to learn to make better use of their social network.

Disturbed eating attitudes, coping styles, and subjective quality of life in adolescents with Type 1 diabetes

OBJECTIVES

To evaluate coping styles and quality of life in youth with Type 1 diabetes with and without eating disorders and to identify relationships between these variables in each group.

METHODS

Adolescents were evaluated for eating disorders with a two-stage diagnostic procedure. Adolescents with and without eating disorders then provided data on coping styles and on subjective well-being.

RESULTS

Adolescents with Type 1 diabetes and disordered eating behavior reported more often blaming themselves and resorting to wishful thinking and poorer physical and psychosocial quality of life than do adolescents with Type 1 diabetes without disordered eating behavior. Specific coping strategies were also positively linked with quality of life and metabolic control.

CONCLUSIONS

Eating disorders and disordered eating behavior in adolescents with Type 1 diabetes seem to be associated with certain negative and avoidant coping strategies and with impeded physical and bio-psychosocial well-being.

A comparative controlled study of personality in severe obesity: a 2-y follow-up after intervention

OBJECTIVE

The primary purpose was to examine 2-y effects of weight change on personality traits in severely obese subjects treated conventionally or surgically. We also assessed differences between the severely obese patients and a primarily normal-weight reference group.

METHOD

Personality traits were assessed using 7 of 15 scales from the Karolinska Scales of Personality (KSP): Somatic Anxiety, Muscular Tension, Psychasthenia, Psychic Anxiety, Monotony Avoidance, Impulsiveness, and Irritability. A total of 1380 surgical candidates, 1241 conventionally treated patients and 1135 subjects from the SOS (Swedish Obese Subjects) reference study, representing the general population, completed the KSP. Data presented in this study were gathered twice from the patients (prior to treatment and after 2 y) and once from the reference subjects. Significance tests and effect sizes (ES) were calculated.

RESULTS

At baseline, the obese were characterised as more anxiety prone, impulsive, irritable and less monotony avoiding than the reference group; surgery patients more so than the conventionally treated. At follow-up, it was found that anxiety proneness decreased and Monotony Avoidance increased with increasing weight loss. The conventionally treated were, on average, weight stable and, hence, only a small decrease was noted regarding Somatic Anxiety. The surgery group lost on average 28 kg, and differences between surgically treated and the reference group decreased on all scales except Impulsiveness, which remained unchanged. The largest improvement was in relation to Psychasthenia.

CONCLUSIONS

Weight reduction maintained for 2 y was associated with changes on practically all personality traits in proportion to the magnitude of weight loss. In particular, Psychasthenia seemed to be alleviated, while Impulsiveness was unaffected.

Coping strategies and recovery in patients with a severe eating disorder

A longitudinal prospective design was used to investigate whether recovery from a severe eating disorder is associated with differences in coping strategies and whether coping strategies predict recovery. Subjects were 146 patients who had received intensive day or inpatient treatment. Recovery is associated with less Avoiding, less Passive Reacting, more Active Tackling, and more Seeking of Social Support. Passive Reacting emerged as a robust predictor of recovery. Seeking Social Support predicted bulimic symptomatology and global functioning. Building coping skills in eating disorder patients may start early in treatment and may make patients less vulnerable for relapse.

Mediating and moderating effects of stress perception and situation type on coping responses in women with disordered eating

Effects of stress perception and situation type on coping behavior were assessed in undergraduate females. Women with high (n=28) and low (n=28) Eating Attitudes Test (EAT) scores listened to audiotaped scenes representing two different situation types and two levels of stress. As predicted, the High EAT group rated scenes as more stressful and endorsed more of the maladaptive emotion-oriented coping, compared to the low EAT condition. Importantly, analyses revealed that stress perception mediated the relationship between group membership and emotion-oriented coping. Scene type appeared to moderate the effect of group on emotion-oriented coping. However, stress perception was shown to mediate, or account for, the moderating effect of situation type; a relationship termed mediated moderation. So although the two groups appeared to differ in the effect of situation type on coping, this apparent interaction effect can be attributed to differences in their perception of stress. Finally, women with High EAT scores did not exhibit a deficit in the more productive task-oriented coping behaviors, nor did they exhibit an avoidant coping style. In sum, the maladaptive coping used by women with disordered eating may represent characteristic emotional responses to exaggerated perceptions of stress and a preoccupation with issues specific to body image and food, rather than deficits in productive coping skills or an avoidant coping style.

Bulimia nervosa: an update and treatment recommendations

Bulimia nervosa is a common eating disorder in adolescent women. Biological, psychological, and social factors are implicated in onset and important in treatment. Diagnosis of the syndrome, but not its subtypes, can be made well using the DSM-IV system. Screening tools, laboratory findings, and physical findings can be helpful in making the diagnosis. Comorbid disorders include affective disorders, addictive disorders, anxiety disorders, personality disorders, and anorexia nervosa. The etiology of bulimia nervosa is complex, with biologic, psychological, social, and family factors, which likely differ somewhat from patient to patient. Treatment, accordingly, should be comprehensive, individualized, and multifaceted. Many patients respond well to the use of an antidepressant, and cognitive-behavioral therapy is a useful approach for many patients. Combining these two treatments seems to be a good strategy. Environmental and family issues also need to be addressed. Many patients are treated insufficiently. More research on bulimia nervosa specific to adolescence is needed.

Physical and sexual abuse histories in patients with eating disorders: a comparison of Japanese and American patients

Physical and sexual abuse among patients with eating disorders has been a focus of attention in Western countries, however, there is no study comparing the incidence of these factors in Western and Asian countries. Japanese subjects consisted of 38 patients with anorexia nervosa restricting type (AN-R), 46 patients with anorexia nervosa binge eating/purging type (AN-BP), 76 patients with bulimia nervosa purging type (BN) and 99 controls. Subjects from the USA consisted of 29 AN-R, 34 AN-BP and 16 BN. The Physical and Sexual Abuse Questionnaire was administered to all subjects. Minor sexual abuse such as confronting exhibitionism or being fondled by a stranger tended to be more prevalent among Japanese subjects, while victimization by rape or incest was more prevalent among USA subjects. Conversely, physical abuse history was similarly distributed across each diagnostic subgroup in both countries. Events related to physical abuse, such as an abusive family background, may contribute whether eating disorder patients are restricting or bulimic and regardless of culture.

Therapeutic potential of CRF receptor antagonists: a gut-brain perspective

Activation of the corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) family of neuropeptide receptors in the brain and periphery appears to mediate stress-related changes in a variety of physiological and functional domains. Comparative pharmacology of CRF receptor agonists suggests that CRF, urocortin, sauvagine and urotensin consistently mimic, and conversely peptide CRF receptor antagonists lessen, the functional consequences of stressor exposure. Together with the development of novel non-peptide CRF receptor antagonists, a growing number of CRF receptor selective ligands are available to elucidate the neurobiology and physiological role of CRF systems. The present review considers available preclinical evidence as well as results from one Phase II clinical trial which address the hypothesis that CRF receptor antagonists may represent a new option for pharmacotherapy of stress-related disorders.
