The informal discussion of advance care planning among Chinese older adults: Do education and social media use matter?

This study aimed to examine and compare the associations between education, social media use, and advance care planning (ACP) discussion among Chinese older adults in mainland China (Wuhan), Taiwan (Taichung), and the United States (Honolulu). Community-dwelling older adults (≥ 55) were recruited from 2017 to 2018. The ACP discussion rate in Wuhan, Taichung, and Honolulu were 15.2 %, 19.2 %, and 31.3 %, respectively. Logistic regression models revealed that education was positively associated with ACP discussion in Taichung and Honolulu. Social media use was positively associated with ACP discussions in Wuhan and Honolulu, and it attenuated the association between education and ACP discussion in Honolulu. The present study contributes to previous studies by comparing the associations between education, social media use, and ACP discussion in different settings within the same ethnicity. Policy and practice implications were also discussed.

Information concealment in palliative patients: Development and pilot study of a new scale for caregivers

Previous studies on palliative care have assessed the phenomenon of Information Concealment (IC), confirmed its relevance and emphasised the need to have a scale for its assessment. The aim of this study was to design and validate such an instrument. The sample comprised 150 palliative caregivers (23 men and 127 women). The dimensionality of the items of the Information Concealment Scale for Caregivers (ECOI) was assessed using Exploratory Factor Analysis and an optimal implementation of parallel analysis. Reliability and criterion validity were analysed using sample data. The ECOI comprises three factors: Concealment or dissimulation about the disease, misrepresentation of the real situation and control of the information. The scale has excellent reliability and shows criterion validity. Therefore, the ECOI is a reliable and valid instrument to objectively measure IC among Spanish caregivers in palliative care settings.

Perspectives of Asians living in Texas on pain management in the last days of life

AIM

The recognition that someone's ethnic identity does not necessarily predict their health-care beliefs and preferences, and lack of scientific evidence on this topic provide the fundamental justification for this study. The aim of this descriptive qualitative study was to determine the attitudes about and preferences for pain management in the last days of life for persons born in Japan, China and Vietnam living in Texas.

METHOD

Personal interviews were conducted to elicit people's perspectives on pain management, such as open or indirect acknowledgement of pain and endurance of pain for clarity of consciousness.

RESULTS

Thematic analysis revealed three overarching themes for the Japanese group and five themes each for the Chinese and Vietnamese groups. Avoidance of stereotyping based on cultural background was a major finding of this study.

CONCLUSION

Promoting quality of life in the last days of life is a priority for health professionals, and effective, individualised management of pain is of the utmost importance.
