Strategies for implementing a guided imagery program to enhance patient experience

The patient in acute care settings can have severe emotional and physical stresses that are also experienced by family and significant others. The experience in a hospital has often been described as overwhelming; it can evoke feelings of fear, anger, helplessness, and isolation. Guided imagery, one of the most well-studied complementary therapies, is used increasingly to improve patients' experiences and healthcare outcomes. More and more, patients are relying on the use of guided imagery to provide a significant source of strength, support, and courage as they prepare for a procedure or manage the stresses of a hospital stay. This article provides a brief review of the research base for guided imagery and broad indications for its use. It describes key elements of the therapy and outlines steps to implement a program of guided imagery that can be used in variety of settings.

Effects of music listening on depressed women in Taiwan

This study investigated the physiological and psychological effects of music listening on depressed women in Taiwan. Through the use of a pretest-posttest, control group, experimental design, the heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure, and immediate mood states before and after a music/sound intervention were measured in 30 women. Quantitative data were analyzed descriptively and with t tests. A qualitative questionnaire was administered to participants to elicit information related to the subjective experience of music/sound listening. Significant posttest differences were found in experimental group participants' heart rates, respiratory rates, blood pressure, and tranquil mood states. Significant posttest differences also were found in control group participants' heart rates and tranquil mood states. The results support the use of music listening as a body-mind healing modality for depressed women.

Energy balancing through touch for health

Through reflection on other types of energy work, the basis is laid for Touch for Health (TFH) as an energetic, touch, body therapy. TFH offers an opportunity for increased awareness of the subtle messages that our bodies are communicating to us. This communication is enhanced through the biofeedback quality of muscle testing. By introducing us to the feeling of well-being that occurs through energy balance, TFH makes individuals more aware of the meaning of optimal-level wellness. It assists people to move to a higher level of self-care. This health maintenance technique can be used anytime, anywhere for ourselves and others. By putting us back in control of our own health and well-being, TFH can increase self-esteem. Applications for nursing practice are explored.
