Abstract
The possible impact of premorbid Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in the recovery process following sport-related concussion (SRC) in adolescents is not clear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of ADHD together with other selected variables on symptom presentation and neurocognitive performance in a well-matched sample of adolescents with SRC. We hypothesized that more symptoms and poorer neurocognitive performance would be observed in those with ADHD. Symptoms from the Sideline Concussion Assessment Tool-5 and cognitive test results from the Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Test (ImPACT) were examined at initial visit, and symptoms were re-assessed at 3-months in a sample of 112 participants with (n = 56) and without (n = 56) ADHD (ages 12-18 years; M = 14.68, SD = 1.77) who were matched by age, sex, ethnicity/race, and days post-injury. Exclusion criteria included severe medical illness or moderate/severe brain injury and lack of English fluency. No significant group differences were found in total symptoms (p = .145), symptom severity (p = .179), or neurocognitive functioning at initial visit (all p > .79) or at 3 months. However, athletes with ADHD reported more nausea (p = 0.22) and feeling slowed down at initial testing (p = .021). Additionally, premorbid anxiety influenced symptom report (p = .010). ADHD did not appear to pose a specific risk for greater symptom burden or neurocognitive deficits in the first 3 months post-concussion.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Concussions are a prevalent health concern, affecting millions of individuals in the United States yearly. Concussion symptomology overlaps with other conditions making diagnosis and management particularly challenging, particularly among individuals with ADHD. ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects a significant portion of the adult population. OBJECTIVE To enhance our understanding of symptom resolution and identify factors that could influence concussion care management, the purpose of the current study was to examine the recovery trajectory of adults diagnosed with both ADHD and concussion compared to the trajectory of adults who have experienced a concussion but do not have an ADHD diagnosis. METHODS The study included a retrospective chart review of patients treated for concussion at a concussion specialty clinic. RESULTS The findings of the study revealed no significant differences in history of concussion or recovery time between patients with and without ADHD. It was observed that patients with ADHD had a higher prevalence of anxiety, depression, and other mental health conditions. CONCLUSIONS The findings of the current study underscore the need for additional research to guide the care of patients diagnosed with both ADHD and concussion.

Abstract
Aim Athletic pre-season testing can establish functional baseline for comparison following concussion. Whether impacts of future concussions may be foretold by such testing is little known. Materials & methods Two sets of models for a significant burden of concussion were generated: a traditional approach using a series of logistic regressions, and a penalized regression approach using elastic net. Results 3091 youth and adult athletes were baseline-assessed. 90 subsequently experienced concussion and 35 were still experiencing a significant burden of concussion when tested within two weeks. Both models associated prior history of head injury and visual attention-related metrics with a significant burden of concussion. Conclusion Pre-season testing of visual attention may identify athletes who are at risk for significant sports-related concussion.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Athletes of all ages may be affected by medical and mental health issues. Sports medicine physicians should be familiar with common conditions that may affect the well-being of athletes, such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). ADHD behaviors have the potential to affect a person's ability to concentrate. It is likely that social and cognitive therapies combined with pharmacotherapy will be the most effective way to treat ADHD in athletes. Medications used for ADHD, especially stimulant types, are known to improve alertness, reaction time, anaerobic performance, and endurance, which would potentially improve athletic performance. Furthermore, stimulant medications may enable student athletes with ADHD to focus on academic studies for longer periods of time, beyond usual levels of fatigue, important for those who may be exhausted after practices and games. The purported performance enhancement effects and potential adverse effects of stimulant medications have prompted many sports governing bodies to ban prescription stimulants or establish strict rules for their use. Athletes taking physician-prescribed stimulants to treat ADHD need to provide the appropriate documentation for approval before competition or risk punitive measures. Physicians should strive to provide a high quality of care to athletes with ADHD through early diagnosis, appropriate and careful multidisciplinary treatment, and complete and timely documentation to facilitate continued sports participation.

Abstract
ObjectivesFor young patients sustaining concussion, assessing recovery is vital in determining safe return to play. Identifying risk factors may aid clinicians in recognising patients at risk for prolonged recovery. The study objective is to identify risk factors for prolonged (>28 days) and extended (>90 days) recovery (defined as symptom duration) and analyse how these risk factors differ between the two groups.MethodsWe retrospectively analysed electronic health record data (n=4937) among patients aged 10–18 years collected at Nationwide Children’s Hospital Sports Medicine concussion clinics between 1 July 2012 and 30 June 2019. Data collected included patient demographics, comorbidities (eg, prior psychiatric diagnoses, prior concussions) and injury characteristics (eg, loss of consciousness, injury setting). We examined patient risk factors for prolonged (>28 days) and/or extended (>90 days) recovery using modified Poisson regression models.ResultsFactors associated with increased risk of prolonged recovery from concussion included prior concussions (adjusted risk ratio (ARR) 1.19, 95% CI 1.02 to 1.38) for two concussions (ARR 1.36, 95% CI 1.14 to 1.61), for >3, and higher initial symptom score (ARR 2.57, 95% CI 2.34 to 2.83) for postconcussion symptom (PCS) scores 21–60 (ARR 2.89, 95% CI 2.54 to 3.29), for PCS>60. Risk factors for extended recovery included history of concussion (ARR 1.50, 95% CI 1.09 to 2.06) for two concussions (ARR 1.75, 95% CI 1.17 to 2.62), for >3 and older age (15–18 years, ARR 1.11, 95% CI 1.05 to 1.18). Additionally, comorbid attention deficit hyperactivity disorder increased risk of prolonged recovery (ARR 1.14, 95% CI 1.01 to 1.29) while anxiety increased risk for extended recovery (ARR 1.47, 95% CI 1.10 to 1.95).ConclusionOverall, risk factors for prolonged recovery differ somewhat from risk factors for extended recovery. For patients who present to clinic with concussion, mental health is an important consideration which may impact the timeline for symptom recovery.
