Abstract
INTRODUCTION The present study aimed to analyse both neurobehavioural and biochemical results of neonates born of mothers exposed to different doses of lithium along with the groups that received lithium at the highest dose with folic acid as a preventive treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS Male and female rats were mated in separate cages, and pregnant rats were divided into eight first group as (1) vehicle; (2) propylthiouracil (PTU)-induced hypothyroidism; (3-4) received two different doses of lithium carbonate (15 and 30 mg/kg); (5-7) the highest doses of lithium (30 mg/kg) plus three different doses of folic acid (5, 10 and 15 mg/kg); and (8) received just folic acid (15 mg/kg). All treatments were dissolved in drinking water and continued until delivery, followed by returning to a regular diet without treatment. RESULTS Lithium (30 mg/kg) disrupts both behavioural and biochemical markers, including TSH, T3 and T4 as measuring indicators to assess thyroid function, IL-10 and TNF-α as anti-inflammatory and inflammatory agents, respectively, malondialdehyde as an oxidative stress marker, alongside SOD, and catalase activity as antioxidant indicators. Besides, folic acid, almost at the highest dose (15 mg/kg), attenuated memory impairement and anxiety-like behaviour caused by lithium. Moreover, the groups treated with folic acid alone in comparison with vehicles demonstrated higher levels of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory indicators. CONCLUSION According to the results, prenatal exposure to a high dose of lithium (30 mg/kg) leads to foetal neurodevelopmental disorder and growth restriction through various mechanisms more likely attributed to hypothyroidism, which means it should be either prohibited or prescribed cautiously during pregnancy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and thyroid dysfunction (TD) are two common chronic endocrine disorders that often coexist. Folate deficiency has been reported to be related with the onset and development of T2DM. However, the relationship between folate deficiency and TD remains unclear. This study aims to investigate the association of serum folate with TD in patients with T2DM. METHODS The study used data on 268 inpatients with T2DM in the Beijing Chao-yang Hospital, Capital Medical University from October 2020 to February 2021. Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), free triiodothyronine (FT3), free thyroxine (FT4), and serum folate were measured with chemiluminescence immunoassay (CLIA), and folate deficiency was defined as a serum folate concentration < 4.4 ng/mL. Ordinary least squares regression models were used to assess the association of serum folate with TSH concentration. Multivariable logistic regression models were performed to explore the correlation of folate deficiency and the risk for elevated TSH. RESULTS 15.3% of T2DM patients had TD. Among those patients with TD, 80.5% had elevated TSH. Compared with the normal-TSH and low-TSH groups, the prevalence of folate deficiency was significantly higher in the elevated-TSH group (P < 0.001). Serum folate level was negatively associated with TSH (β=-0.062, 95%CI: -0.112, -0.012). Folate deficiency was associated with the higher risk for elevated TSH in patients with T2DM (OR = 8.562, 95%CI: 3.108, 23.588). CONCLUSIONS A low serum folate concentration was significantly associated with a higher risk for elevated TSH among T2DM patients.

Abstract
A number of studies have shown that oxidative stress is related to the pathogenesis of several immunological diseases, such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT), although there is no plausible mechanism to explain it. Thus, we aimed at hypothesizing and providing some possible mechanisms linking oxidative stress to autoimmunity aspects and its implications for HT, as well as adjuvant therapeutic proposals to mitigate the deleterious effects. Our hypothesis is that deficient eating habits, autoimmune regulator gene predisposing gene, dysbiosis and molecular mimicry, unfolded proteins and stress in the endoplasmic reticulum, and thymus involution appear to be the main potential factors leading to HT oxidative stress. Likewise, we show that the use of minerals selenium and zinc, vitamins D and C, as well as probiotics, can be interesting adjuvant therapies for the control of oxidative damage and poor prognosis of HT. Further clinical trials are needed to understand the real beneficial and side effects of these supplements.

Abstract
Background: B12 (cobalamin) deficiency has been reported in hypothyroid patients with
variable prevalence rates thus routine screening of hypothyroid patients was
recommended by some and discouraged by others. We aimed to assess the
prevalence of B12 deficiency among hypothyroid patients and to evaluate for
pernicious anemia and celiac disease as etiologies. Methods: A total 133 patients were included. Thyroid hormones and thyroid peroxidase
(TPO) autoantibodies were measured. Serum B12 was measured and if deficient,
intrinsic factor antibodies (IFAB) and tissue transglutaminase (tTG)
antibodies were evaluated. Results: Our study included 45 patients with overt hypothyroidism (OH), 48 patients
with subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH), and 40 patients as controls. Mean age
was 34.3 years and 82% were females. TPO antibodies were positive in 73.5%
of OH and 51.1% of SCH patients. B12 deficiency was detected in 33.3%,
47.9%, and 37.5% of OH, SCH, and controls, respectively with no significant
difference (P = .334). Borderline-to-low B12 level was more
prevalent in the OH and the SCH groups compared to controls (68.9%, 85.4%,
and 57.5%, respectively; P = .014). Among B12-deficient
hypothyroid patients, 7.5% had positive IFAB and 13.3% had positive tTG
antibodies. We did not find a significant association of TPO positivity and
B12 deficiency (OR, 0.69; 95% CI 0.3-1.57; P = .147). Conclusion: We did not find a higher prevalence of B12 deficiency among hypothyroid
patients nor an association with TPO positivity. Borderline B12 levels were
more prevalent among hypothyroid patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study was designed to investigate the vitamin D (vit-D) and vitamin B12 (vit-B12) levels and their correlation with anti-thyroid peroxidase (anti-TPO) antibodies in patients with autoimmune hypothyroidism. METHODS A total of 130 patients diagnosed with autoimmune hypothyroidism were included in the study retrospectively. The patients were divided into two groups as those having vit-B12 levels below 200 pg/mL (n = 60) and vit-B12 levels equal to or above 200 pg/mL (n = 70). These two groups were compared in terms of age, sex, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free-T4 (FT4), vit-D, and anti-TPO. The correlation between vit-B12 and anti-TPO levels was also investigated in these groups. Patients were then divided into four groups according to their vit-D levels. Patients with normal vit-D levels (25[OH]D >30 ng/mL; n = 5), those with vit-D insufficiency (20-30 mg/mL; n = 9), those with vit-D deficiency (10-20 ng/mL; n = 43), and those with severe vit-D deficiency (<10 ng/mL; n = 73). These four groups were compared in terms of age, gender, TSH, FT4, vit-B12, and anti-TPO levels. In addition, the correlation between levels of vit-D and anti-TPO was also investigated. RESULTS We found that vit-B12 deficiency and vit-D deficiency were associated with autoimmune hypothyroidism, and that there was a negative correlation between vit-B12 and vit-D levels and anti-TPO antibodies in these patients. CONCLUSION In patients with autoimmune hypothyroidism, vit-D and vit-B12 deficiency should be investigated at the time of diagnosis and periodically on follow-ups.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to compare clinical features of vitamin B12 deficiency patients with a history of gastrectomy to those without a history of gastrectomy. METHODS Twenty-two patients with vitamin B12 deficiency were included. Patients' chief complaints, oral manifestations, blood examination results, and past medical histories were reviewed. RESULTS Eleven patients had a history of gastrectomy and 11 did not. The chief complaint was glossodynia in all patients. No significant differences were observed between the two groups regarding age, sex, symptom duration, or plasma vitamin B12 level. Erythema and depapillation of the tongue were the most common findings, however less common among patients without a history of gastrectomy. Two patients with a history of gastrectomy and 5 patients without a history of gastrectomy had normal oral mucosa. Patients with a history of gastrectomy were more anemic. Oral symptoms of the majority of patients responded to antifungals and vitamin B12 replacement. The suggested etiologies for vitamin B12 deficiency in the patients without a history of gastrectomy were gastritis, medications, diet, autoimmunity, and early gastric cancer. CONCLUSIONS Vitamin B12 deficiency and its associated etiological factors should be considered in patients with glossodynia, even those whose oral mucosa appears normal and who lack a history of gastrectomy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Autoimmune thyroid diseases (ATD), and pernicious anemia (PA) in particular, are common in elderly people. The relationship between both of these is currently being discussed. The objective of this study is to determine the correlation between ATD and PA in elderly people, and if there are other associated factors affecting this relationship. MATERIAL AND METHODS The factors studied to analyse this association were social-health variables, autoimmune comorbidity (type 1 diabetes and other autoimmune diseases), the taking of drugs that alter vitamin B12 levels (Metformin and protein bomb inhibitors), and the chronological order in which both diseases appear in this population. A logistic regression analysis was performed to determine which of the described variables could have an on both diseases. RESULTS The prevalence was 8.2% for ATD and 3.3% for PA, with a progressive increase in the annual incidence in the past 10 years from 7.1 to 12.7 cases per 1,000 persons>65 years for ATI, and from 1.6 to 7.4 cases for PA. PA was found in 18.6% of the patients with ATD, and the 45% of PA presented with ATD, mainly in women (RR=6.0). The average time in diagnosing the second disease was about 8 years. When there was a third autoimmune disease the likelihood of ATD and PA increased fourfold. Patients with ATD and consuming drugs which were affecting the absorption of vitamin B12 had double the probability of developing a PA compared with those who were not taking medications. CONCLUSIONS The results of this study confirm the association between ATI and AP among people 65 or older, also a progressive increase in the incidence of these diseases.

Abstract
Anemia is a multifactorial condition whose prevalence increases in both sexes after the fifth decade of life. It is a highly represented phenomenon in older adults and in one-third of cases is "unexplained." Ageing process is also characterized by a "multiple hormonal dysregulation" with disruption in gonadal, adrenal, and somatotropic axes. Experimental studies suggest that anabolic hormones such as testosterone, IGF-1, and thyroid hormones are able to increase erythroid mass, erythropoietin synthesis, and iron bioavailability, underlining a potential role of multiple hormonal changes in the anemia of aging. Epidemiological data more consistently support an association between lower testosterone and anemia in adult-older individuals. Low IGF-1 has been especially associated with anemia in the pediatric population and in a wide range of disorders. There is also evidence of an association between thyroid hormones and abnormalities in hematological parameters under overt thyroid and euthyroid conditions, with limited data on subclinical statuses. Although RCTs have shown beneficial effects, stronger for testosterone and the GH-IGF-1 axis and less evident for thyroid hormones, in improving different hematological parameters, there is no clear evidence for the usefulness of hormonal treatment in improving anemia in older subjects. Thus, more clinical and research efforts are needed to investigate the hormonal contribution to anemia in the older individuals.

However there is limited data on exact prevalence of low B12 and its correlation with anti-thyroperoxidase antibody (anti-TPO) levels in these patients. The aim of our study was to estimate serum vitamin B12 levels in autoimmune thyroid disorders and to correlate B12 levels with anti-TPO. 350 patients were selected by convenient sampling. Vitamin B12 levels and thyroid parameters were estimated using fully automated chemiluminescence method on Access 2. Results of our study shows that using the manufacturer's cut-off of 145 pg/mL, the prevalence of low serum vitamin B12 was found to be 45.50 %. Higher prevalence (55 %) was seen based on the published cut-off of 200 pg/mL The study however did not demonstrate any significant correlation between vitamin B12 levels and anti-TPO (r = -0.11 and p value of 0.30).

Abstract
Both insulin resistance (IR) and vitamin D deficiency (VDD) are found to be associated with many cancer types. In this study, we evaluated the presence of IR and VDD in thyroid cancer patients based on controls. Total 344 papillary thyroid cancer and 116 controls were part of the study. Glucose, insulin, homeostasis model analysis-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) (control group 2.12 ± 0.9 and patient group 3.6 ± 1.1; p < 0.0001), LDL were significantly high; HOMA-S and vitamin D3 levels (control group 19.11 ± 8 and patient group 17 ± 16; p = 0.004) were significantly low in the patient group. Vitamin D deficiency (64/108 in controls vs 166/235; p = 0.026) and insulin resistance (24/108; 115/235; p < 0.0001) were more frequent in papillary thyroid cancer patients. After regression analysis, tumor diameter showed significant association with log-HOMA-IR (B = 0.315; p = 0.017) and log-vitamin D3 (B = 0.207; p = 0.04). Vitamin D deficiency and insulin resistance frequencies show no difference between micro- and macropapillary thyroid cancers. Receiver operating characteristic curve shows the best cutoff point for tumor diameter showing that the presence of lymph node metastasis was 0.65 cm with 81.2 % sensitivity and 52 % specificity. Best cutoff point for the capsular invasion tumor diameter was 0.75 cm with 83.3 % sensitivity and 60.4 % specificity. No difference between follicular and classical type papillary thyroid carcinomas has been yet discovered. As a result, thyroid cancer patients are more insulin resistant and vitamin D3 deficient. Vitamin D3 levels and HOMA-IR index may affect tumor diameter. Tumor size that is lower than 1 cm (0.65-0.75 cm) may be related with capsular invasion and lymph node involvement.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Hypothyroidism is associated with normocytic anaemia. Indeed, a limited number of studies have shown significant associations between free thyroxin (T4) and erythrocyte indices. These studies did not include vitamin B12, folic acid, iron and renal function in the analyses. We therefore studied the association between thyroid hormones and erythrocyte indices in a population-based cohort of older euthyroid subjects, with adjustment for major confounding parameters. DESIGN Data, including thyroid hormones and erythrocyte indices, are from the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam (LASA), an ongoing cohort study on predictors and consequences of changes in health in the ageing population in the Netherlands. Multivariable linear regression analyses were applied to study the cross-sectional associations between free T4, thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and erythrocyte indices (haemoglobin content, haematocrit, mean cell volume (MCV) and erythrocyte count) in a euthyroid sub-sample. The final models were adjusted for vitamin B12, folic acid, iron levels and renal function. RESULTS In 708 euthyroid older subjects, an increase of 5pmol/L free T4 was associated with a mean increase of 0.12mmol/L or 0.19g/dL of haemoglobin, 0.068 10(12)/L erythrocytes and 0.006L/L haematocrit (P=0.007, P=0.005, P=0.001, respectively). Free T4 was not significantly associated with MCV (P>0.05). TSH appeared not to be associated with any of the erythrocyte indices (all P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS In a cohort of older subjects, free T4, but not TSH, was associated with erythrocyte indices, confirming the role of thyroid hormones in the regulation of erythropoiesis.

Abstract
Thyroid hormones stimulate directly or indirectly growth of erythroid colonies through erythropoietin. Anemia is often the first sign of hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism can cause a wide variety of anemic disorders. Numerous mechanisms are involved in the pathogenesis of these anemias that can be microcytic, macrocytic and normocytic. We designed this study to investigate the anemia frequency and if present, etiology of anemia in hypothyroid patients. 100 patients with overt hypothyroid, 100 patients with subclinical hypothyroid, and 200 healthy controls were enrolled in this study. Overt hypothyroidism diagnosis is done when elevated TSH and low levels of free T4 and/or free T3 have been observed. Subclinical hypothyroidism is defined as elevated serum TSH with normal free T(4) and free T(3) levels. Peripheral smears of the anemic patients were examined. Anemia prevalence was 43% in the overt hypothyroid group, 39% in the subclinical hypothyroid group, and 26% in the control group (p=0.0003 and p=0.021 respectively related to controls). Thus, the frequency of anemia in subclinical hypothyroidism is as high as that in overt hypothyroidism. There was no difference between the hypothyroid groups in terms of anemia. Vitamin B12, Fe, and folic acid were similar between these groups. According to our findings, anemia of chronic disease is the most common type of anemia in hypothyroid patients. Suspicion of hypothyroidism should be considered in anemias with uncertain etiology.
