Abstract
Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) represents a liver disorder characterized by steatosis with underlying metabolic risk factors. The prevalence of MASLD continues to rise, leading to increased patient risk of various complications. Recent research has been focused on new therapeutic strategies to reduce the incidence of MASLD and provide effective treatment plans to prevent further irreversible liver damage. The treatment approach is multifactorial, with a primary focus on weight loss and management of underlying comorbidities through lifestyle modifications, pharmacotherapy, or surgical options. Ongoing research is exploring new pharmacological therapies that could enhance the treatment of MASLD.

Abstract
While non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a prevalent and frequent cause of liver-related morbidity and mortality, it is also strongly associated with cardiovascular disease-related morbidity and mortality, likely driven by its associations with insulin resistance and other manifestations of metabolic dysregulation. However, few satisfactory pharmacological treatments are available for NAFLD due in part to its complex pathophysiology, and challenges remain in stratifying individual patient's risk for liver and cardiovascular disease related outcomes. In this review, we describe the development and progression of NAFLD, including its pathophysiology and outcomes. We also describe different tools for identifying patients with NAFLD who are most at risk of liver-related and cardiovascular-related complications, as well as current and emerging treatment options, and future directions for research.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Coffee consumption has been shown to reduce the risk of liver fibrosis and is capable of inducing human UDP-glucuronosyltransferase (UGT) 1A genes. UGT1A enzymes act as indirect antioxidants catalyzing the elimination of reactive metabolites, which in turn are potent initiators of profibrotic mechanisms. The aim of this study was to analyze the role of UGT1A genes as effectors of the protective properties of coffee in bile duct ligation (BDL) induced liver fibrosis. METHODS Fourteen days BDL with and without coffee pre- and co-treatment was performed in htgUGT1A-WT and htgUGT1A-SNP mice. Hepatic UGT1A mRNA expression levels, serum bilirubin and aminotransferase activities were determined. Liver fibrosis was assessed by collagen deposition, computational analysis of Sirius red tissue staining and expression of profibrotic marker genes. Oxidative stress was measured by hepatic peroxidase concentrations and immunofluorescence staining. RESULTS UGT1A transcription was differentially activated in the livers of htgUGT1A-WT mice after BDL, in contrast to a reduced or absent induction in the presence of SNPs. Co-treated (coffee + BDL) htgUGT1A-WT-mice showed significantly increased UGT1A expression and protein levels and a considerably higher induction compared to water drinking WT mice (BDL), whereas in co-treated htgUGT1A-SNP mice absolute expression levels remained below those observed in htgUGT1A-WT mice. Collagen deposition, oxidative stress and the expression of profibrotic markers inversely correlated with UGT1A expression levels in htgUGT1A-WT and SNP mice after BDL and coffee + BDL co-treatment. CONCLUSIONS Coffee exerts hepatoprotective and antioxidative effects via activation of UGT1A enzymes. Attenuated hepatic fibrosis as a result of coffee-mediated UGT1A induction during cholestasis was detected, while the protective action of coffee was lower in a common low-function UGT1A SNP haplotype present in 10% of the Caucasian population. This study suggests that coffee consumption might constitute a potential strategy to support the conventional treatment of cholestasis-related liver diseases.

Abstract
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the leading cause of chronic liver disease in developed countries. Coffee is one of the most consumed beverages in the world and has been shown to be beneficial in limiting progression in chronic liver disease in general. However, research surrounding the impact of coffee consumption on NAFLD progression is limited. This systematic review aimed to investigate the relationship between coffee consumption and the progression of liver disease, specifically for cases of NAFLD. MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, the Cochrane Library, and Scopus were searched for published studies that evaluated the effects of coffee consumption on the progression of NAFLD. The results are presented in a narrative synthesis with principal summary measures, including odds ratios, p-values, and differences in mean coffee intake in relation to severity of NAFLD. Five studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in this review. There was no trial evidence among NAFLD patients, rather all studies were of a cross-sectional design. Using the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Quality Criteria Checklist, four studies received a positive rating, with the remaining study receiving a neutral rating. Overall, four out of the five studies reported a statistically significant relationship between coffee consumption and the severity of fibrosis. Methods around capturing and defining coffee consumption were heterogeneous and therefore an effective dose could not be elucidated. Results suggest that higher coffee consumption is inversely associated with the severity of hepatic fibrosis in individuals with NAFLD. However, further research is required to elucidate the optimum quantity and form/preparation of coffee required to exert this hepatoprotective role.

Abstract
UDP‐glucuronosyltransferase (UGT) 1A enzymes detoxify a broad array of exogenous compounds including environmental toxins and carcinogens. Case‐control studies identified genetic variations in UGT1A genes leading to reduced glucuronidation activity, which were associated with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) formation and progression. The aim of the study was therefore to examine the direct effect of common UGT1A polymorphisms (SNPs) on HCC development and outcome in a diethylnitrosamine (DEN)‐induced mouse model. Therefore, a single intraperitoneal DEN injection (20 mg/kg) was administered to 15‐day‐old htgUGT1A‐WT and htgUGT1A‐SNP mice (containing a human haplotype of 10 common UGT1A SNPs) either receiving water or coffee cotreatment for the following 39 weeks. After this time, tumor incidence, size (>1 mm), histology, liver‐body ratio, serum aminotransferase activities, and UGT1A regulation and activity levels were determined. In DEN‐treated htgUGT1A‐SNP mice, a markedly higher number of tumors with a bigger cumulative diameter were detected. The relative liver weight and aminotransferase activity levels were also significantly higher in mice carrying UGT1A SNPs. After coffee + DEN cotreatment, susceptibility for tumor development and growth considerably decreased in both mouse lines, but was still higher in htgUGT1A‐SNP mice. In conclusion, our study provides experimental evidence for the protective role of UGT1A enzymes in neoplastic transformation. These data confirm case‐control studies implicating impaired UGT1A‐mediated carcinogen detoxification as a risk factor for individual cancer disposition. Coffee treatment, which is able to activate UGT1A expression and activity, reduced HCC development and provides an explanation for the protective properties of coffee on liver diseases including liver cancer.

Abstract
Coffee is one of the most consumed beverages worldwide. Previous research has demonstrated its neuroprotective effects in the elderly. People coinfected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) experience an accelerated aging process and cognitive impairment, which significantly impair quality of life and may affect disease-related dimensions such as treatment adherence. This study aimed to analyse the relationship between regular coffee intake and neurocognitive performance (NCP) in HIV-HCV coinfected people. We used data from 139 coinfected patients who participated in both the ANRS CO13 HEPAVIH cohort and the HEPAVIH-Psy cross-sectional survey. Linear regression models adjusting for potential sociodemographic (age, gender, educational level), clinical (liver disease status, ongoing HCV treatment, HIV viral load, major depressive disorder) and socio-behavioural (cannabis use) correlates of NCP were used. Our results showed significant, positive associations between elevated coffee intake (ECI) (three or more cups of coffee per day) and NCP in verbal fluency, psychomotor speed (coding) and executive functioning. ECI might therefore preserve neurocognitive functioning in people living with HIV and HCV.

Abstract
ABSTRACTDetermination of the levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and free
thyroid hormones (fTHs) is crucial for assessing thyroid function. However,
as a result of inter-individual genetic variability and different
environmental factors individual set points exist for TSH and fTHs and
display considerable variation. Furthermore, under specific
pathophysiological conditions like central hypothyroidism, TSH secreting
pituitary tumors, or thyroid hormone resistance the established markers TSH
and fTH fail to reliably predict thyroid function and adequate supply of TH
to peripheral organs. Even in case of overt hyper- and hypothyroidism
circulating fTH concentrations do not correlate with clinical symptoms.
Therefore, there is a clear need for novel, more specific biomarkers to
diagnose and monitor thyroid function. OMICs screening approaches allow
parallel profiling of hundreds to thousands of molecules and thus
comprehensive monitoring of molecular alterations in tissues and body fluids
that might be associated with changes in thyroid function. These techniques
thus constitute promising tools for the identification of urgently needed
novel biomarkers. This mini review summarizes the findings of OMICs studies
in thyroid research with a particular focus on population-based and patient
studies as well as interventional approaches investigating the effects of
thyroid hormone administration.

Abstract
Background: In numerous studies based predominantly on rodent models, administration of 3,5-diiodo-L-thyronine (3,5-T2), a metabolite of the thyroid hormones (TH) thyroxine (T4) and triiodo-L-thyronine (T3), was reported to cause beneficial health effects, including reversal of steatohepatosis and prevention of insulin resistance, in most instances without adverse thyrotoxic side effects. However, the empirical evidence concerning the physiological relevance of endogenously produced 3,5-T2 in humans is comparatively poor. Therefore, to improve the understanding of 3,5-T2-related metabolic processes, we performed a comprehensive metabolomic study relating serum 3,5-T2 concentrations to plasma and urine metabolite levels within a large general population sample. Methods: Serum 3,5-T2 concentrations were determined for 856 participants of the population-based Study of Health in Pomerania-TREND (SHIP-TREND). Plasma and urine metabolome data were generated using mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, allowing quantification of 613 and 578 metabolites in plasma and urine, respectively. To detect thyroid function-independent significant 3,5-T2-metabolite associations, linear regression analyses controlling for major confounders, including thyrotropin and free T4, were performed. The same analyses were carried out using a sample of 16 male healthy volunteers treated for 8 weeks with 250 μg/day levothyroxine to induce thyrotoxicosis. Results: The specific molecular fingerprint of 3,5-T2 comprised 15 and 73 significantly associated metabolites in plasma and urine, respectively. Serum 3,5-T2 concentrations were neither associated with classical thyroid function parameters nor altered during experimental thyrotoxicosis. Strikingly, many metabolites related to coffee metabolism, including caffeine and paraxanthine, formed the clearest positively associated molecular signature. Importantly, these associations were replicated in the experimental human thyrotoxicosis model. Conclusion: The molecular fingerprint of 3,5-T2 demonstrates a clear and strong positive association of the serum levels of this TH metabolite with plasma levels of compounds indicating coffee consumption, therefore pointing to the liver as an organ, the metabolism of which is strongly affected by coffee. Furthermore, 3,5-T2 serum concentrations were found not to be directly TH dependent. Considering the beneficial health effects of 3,5-T2 administration observed in animal models and those of coffee consumption demonstrated in large epidemiological studies, one might speculate that coffee-stimulated hepatic 3,5-T2 production or accumulation represents an important molecular link in this connection.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Increasing evidence suggests that coffee consumption might protect against hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and liver cirrhosis-associated death risk. Caffeine is a natural antagonist to extracellular adenosine and exhibits experimental tumoricidal activity. AIM To evaluate if coffee consumption has beneficial effects on HCC recurrence after orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT). METHODS Coffee consumption of patients before and after OLT for HCC was assessed and correlated with HCC recurrence. HepG2 cells were analysed for proliferation and metastasis potential after treatment with adenosine, in the presence or absence of adenosine receptor antagonists. Expression of adenosine receptors was determined, and known adenosine-mediated cancer pathways inclusive of MAPK and NF-kappa B were tested. RESULTS Ninety patients underwent OLT for HCC. Sixteen (17.8%) patients experienced HCC recurrence after median time of 11.5 months (range 1-40.5). For overall survival postoperative coffee intake emerged as major factor of hazard reduction in a multivariate analysis (HR = 0.2936, 95% CI = 0.12-0.71, P = 0.006). Those with such postoperative coffee intake (≥3 cups per day) had a longer overall survival than those who consumed less or no coffee: M = 11.0 years, SD = 0.52 years vs. M = 7.48 years, SD = 0.76 years = 4.7, P = 0.029). CONCLUSIONS Coffee consumption is associated with a decreased risk of HCC recurrence and provides for increased survival following OLT. We suggest that these results might be, at least in part, associated with the antagonist activity of caffeine on adenosine-A2AR mediated growth-promoting effects on HCC cells.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most predominant chronic liver disease worldwide. Effect of coffee on NAFLD risk and its potential dose-response patterns were explored in the study. DESIGN PubMed, Web of Science, MEDLINE, Cochrane and Embase were searched up to 10 April 2018. We performed pair-wise meta-analysis of <1 cup per day vs. 1-2 cups per days or >2 cups per day to pool the relative risks (RRs) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs). And dose-response analysis was used to estimate relationship of NAFLD occurrence with coffee intake. RESULTS Seven articles were included with 4825 cases and 49,616 non-cases. Compared with <1 cup, 1-2 cups or >2 cups of coffee consumption per day were not significantly associated with NAFLD occurrence, and RR were 0.97 (95% CI: 0.85-1.11) and 0.88 (95%CI: 0.72-1.06). However, the summary RR of the highest versus lowest coffee consumption was 0.94 (95% CI: 0.92-0.97). Dose-response meta-analysis presented a non-linearity curve relationship of coffee and NAFLD occurrence while coffee consumption >3 cups per day reduced NAFLD significantly. CONCLUSION Coffee intake level more than 3 cups was observed lower risk of NAFLD than <2 cups per day. Although the risk of NAFLD was inversely associated with coffee consumption, while relevance may not be very close and more observational studies would be needed to verify the relationship of coffee and NAFLD.

Abstract
Recent studies have suggested positive benefits of coffee consumption on inflammation-related diseases, such as liver diseases and diabetes, where activated lymphocytes and TNF-α are critically implicated. Interestingly, some reports suggested that javamide-II found in coffee may have anti-inflammatory activity greater than that of caffeine, but there is limited information about its effect on TNF-α production by activated lymphocytes. Therefore, the inhibitory effect of javamide-II on TNF-α was investigated in PMA/PHA-treated lymphocytic Jurkat cells. At 5 μM, javamide-II, not caffeine, inhibited TNF-α production in the cells (45 ± 4%, P < 0.001). To elucidate the underlying mechanism, the phosphorylation of MAP kinases (ERK, p38, and JNK) was investigated in the Jurkat cells. Javamide-II had little effect on JNK or p38 phosphorylation, but javamide-II (<20 μM) decreased ERK phosphorylation, consequently reducing TNF-α mRNA expression in the cells ( P < 0.001). The involvement of ERK phosphorylation was also confirmed by an ERK1/2 inhibitor (SCH772984). Furthermore, javamide-II was also found to inhibit IL-2 production, which is up-regulated by ERK phosphorylation in cells ( P < 0.001). These data suggested that javamide-II may be a potent compound to suppress TNF-α production more efficiently than caffeine by inhibiting ERK phosphorylation in Jurkat cells.

Abstract
Weight loss ≥ 5 percent is sufficient to significantly reduce health risks for obese people; therefore, development of novel weight loss compounds with reduced toxicity is urgently required. After screening of natural compounds with anti-adipogenesis properties in 3T3-L1 cells, we determined that kahweol, a coffee-specific diterpene, inhibited adipogenesis. Kahweol reduced lipid accumulation and expression levels of adipogenesis and lipid accumulation-related factors. Levels of phosphorylated AKT and phosphorylated JAK2, that induce lipid accumulation, decreased in kahweol-treated cells. Particularly, kahweol treatment significantly increased AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) activation. We revealed that depletion of AMPK alleviated reduction in lipid accumulation from kahweol treatment, suggesting that inhibition of lipid accumulation by kahweol is dependent on AMPK activation. We detected more rapid reduction in blood glucose levels in mice administrated kahweol than in control mice. We suggest that kahweol has anti-obesity effects and should be studied further for possible therapeutic applications.

Abstract
Background: Coffee intake has been shown to modulate both the effect of ethanol on serum GGT activities in some alcohol consumers and the risk of alcoholic cirrhosis in some patients with chronic diseases. This study aimed to analyze the impact of coffee intake and alcohol consumption on advanced liver fibrosis (ALF) in HIV-HCV co-infected patients. Methods: ANRS CO13-HEPAVIH is a French, nationwide, multicenter cohort of HIV-HCV-co-infected patients. Sociodemographic, behavioral, and clinical data including alcohol and coffee consumption were prospectively collected using annual self-administered questionnaires during five years of follow-up. Mixed logistic regression models were performed, relating coffee intake and alcohol consumption to ALF. Results: 1019 patients were included. At the last available visit, 5.8% reported high-risk alcohol consumption, 27.4% reported high coffee intake and 14.5% had ALF. Compared with patients with low coffee intake and high-risk alcohol consumption, patients with low coffee intake and low-risk alcohol consumption had a lower risk of ALF (aOR (95% CI) 0.24 (0.12–0.50)). In addition, patients with high coffee intake had a lower risk of ALF than the reference group (0.14 (0.03–0.64) in high-risk alcohol drinkers and 0.11 (0.05–0.25) in low-risk alcohol drinkers). Conclusions: High coffee intake was associated with a low risk of liver fibrosis even in HIV-HCV co-infected patients with high-risk alcohol consumption.

Abstract
Kahweol is a diterpene molecule found in Coffea Arabica beans. Previous studies have shown that coffee reduces liver fibrosis, but it is not clear which component of coffee has the protective effect. In this study, we examined whether kahweol has a protective effect on hepatic fibrosis in vivo and in vitro. Kahweol decreased hepatic fibrosis by inhibiting connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) expression in thioacetamide (TAA)-treated mice. The expression of phospho-Smad3, signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3), extracellular signal-regulated kinases (ERK), and c-Jun N-terminal protein kinase (JNK) increased in the livers of TAA-treated mice and decreased in the kahweol-treated group. Kahweol significantly decreased the expression of transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β)-stimulated type I collagen and CTGF expression in vitro. In addition, kahweol significantly decreased the expression of Smad3, STAT3, ERK and JNK, which are involved in the induction of CTGF expression by TGF-β in hepatocytes, but not in HSCs. These results suggest that kahweol may be a new candidate for treatment of liver fibrosis.

Abstract
Liver diseases are linked in the majority of cases to oxidative stress that antioxidants could neutralize with reducing liver injury. Chlorogenic acid, a coffee polyphenol, possesses antioxidant prosperities. The aim of this study was to evaluate in vitro preventive and corrective effects of cholorogenic acid in hepatocyte toxicity induced by free radicals. Hepatocytes were isolated from adult male Wistar rats. To determine corrective effects and reparation, cells were first exposed to two free radical generators (hydrogen peroxide/iron sulfate for hydroxyl radical formation, and phenazine methosulfate/nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide for superoxide anion formation) for 12H and thereafter treated by chlorogenic acid (1 and 10 μM final concentration) for another 12H. To show preventive effects, cells were pretreated by chlorogenic acid and thereafter exposed to free radical generators. Hepatocyte proliferation, glucose uptake, ATP contents, membrane fluidity and integrity, and intracellular redox status were investigated after 24H culture. The results showed that chlorogenic acid reversed the decrease in cell proliferation, glucose uptake and ATP levels, the increased LDH release and the reduced membrane fluidity and restored the oxidant/antioxidant status under oxidative stress. When pre-treated with chlorogenic acid, hepatocytes became very resistant to oxidative conditions and cellular homeostasis was maintained. In conclusion, chlorogenic acid displayed not only corrective but also preventive effects in hepatocytes exposed to oxidative stress and could be beneficial in patients with or at risk of liver diseases.

Abstract
There is emerging evidence for the positive effects or benefits of coffee in patients with liver disease. We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study on patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), hepatitis C virus (HCV), and hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection to determine the effects of coffee intake on a non-invasive marker of liver fibrosis: liver stiffness assessed by transient elastography (TE). We assessed coffee and tea intake and measured TE in 1018 patients with NAFLD, HCV, and HBV (155 with NAFLD, 378 with HCV and 485 with HBV). Univariate and multivariate regression models were performed taking into account potential confounders. Liver stiffness was higher in males compared to females (p < 0.05). Patients with HBV had lower liver stiffness than those with HCV and NAFLD. After adjustment for age, gender, smoking, alcohol consumption, M or XL probe, and disease state (NAFLD, HCV, and HBV status), those who drank 2 or more cups of coffee per day had a lower liver stiffness (p = 0.044). Tea consumption had no effect (p = 0.9). Coffee consumption decreases liver stiffness, which may indicate less fibrosis and inflammation, independent of disease state. This study adds further evidence to the notion of coffee maybe beneficial in patients with liver disease.

Abstract
Recent research has indicated that part of the interindividual variability in cardiovascular responses to caffeine has a genetic basis. Therefore, knowledge of the individual's genetic constitution may allow an individual tailoring of dietary advice for the use of caffeine-containing beverages, yielding an example of the potential of practical translation of nutrigenetic information. This paper reviews the basis for possible nutrigenetic recommendations on the consumption of caffeine, discussing the current gaps in knowledge but also proposing a mode of action in this research area, which may be transposed to other types of similar recommendations.

Abstract
Development of pragmatic methodologies for human health risk assessment is required to address current regulatory challenges. We applied three toxicogenomic approaches—quantitative, predictive, and mechanistic—to a case study in mice exposed for 3 weeks to the hepatocarcinogen furan. We modeled the dose response of a variety of transcriptional endpoints and found that they produced benchmark doses similar to the furan-dependent cancer benchmark doses. Meta-analyses showed strong similarity between furan-dependent gene expression changes and those associated with several hepatic pathologies. Molecular pathways facilitated the development of a molecular mode of action for furan-induced hepatocellular carcinogenicity. Finally, we compared transcriptomic profiles derived from formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded (FFPE) samples with those from high-quality frozen samples to evaluate whether archival samples are a viable option for toxicogenomic studies. The advantage of using FFPE tissues is that they are very well characterized (phenotypically); the disadvantage is that formalin degrades biomacromolecules, including RNA. We found that FFPE samples can be used for toxicogenomics using a ribo-depletion RNA-seq protocol. Our case study demonstrates the utility of toxicogenomics data to human health risk assessment, the potential of archival FFPE tissue samples, and identifies viable strategies toward the reduction of animal usage in chemical testing.

Abstract
Natural products have always been exploited to promote health and served as a valuable source for the discovery of new drugs. In this review, the great potential of natural compounds and medicinal plants for the treatment or prevention of cardiovascular and metabolic disorders, global health problems with rising prevalence, is addressed. Special emphasis is laid on natural products for which efficacy and safety have already been proven and which are in clinical trials, as well as on plants used in traditional medicine. Potential benefits from certain dietary habits and dietary constituents, as well as common molecular targets of natural products, are also briefly discussed. A glimpse at the history of statins and biguanides, two prominent representatives of natural products (or their derivatives) in the fight against metabolic disease, is also included. The present review aims to serve as an "opening" of this special issue of Molecules, presenting key historical developments, recent advances, and future perspectives outlining the potential of natural products for prevention or therapy of cardiovascular and metabolic disease.

Abstract
Furan is a food processing contaminant found in many common cooked foods that induces liver toxicity and liver cancer in animal models treated with sufficient doses. The metabolism of furan occurs primarily in the liver where CYP 2E1 produces a highly reactive bis-electrophile, cis-2-butene-1,4-dial (BDA). BDA reacts with nucleophilic groups in amino acids and DNA in vitro to form covalent adducts. Evidence for BDA-nucleoside adduct formation in vivo is limited but important for assessing the carcinogenic hazard of dietary furan. This study used controlled dosing with furan in Fischer 344 rats to measure serum and liver toxicokinetics and the possible formation of BDA-nucleoside adducts in vivo. After gavage exposure, furan concentrations in the liver were consistently higher than those in whole blood (∼6-fold), which is consistent with portal vein delivery of a lipophilic compound into the liver. Formation of BDA-2'-deoxycytidine in furan-treated rat liver DNA was not observed using LC/MS/MS after single doses as high as 9.2 mg/kg bw or repeated dosing for up to 360 days above a consistent background level (1-2 adducts per 10(8) nucleotides). This absence of BDA-nucleoside adduct formation is consistent with the general lack of evidence for genotoxicity of furan in vivo.

Abstract
Liver diseases are a worldwide medical problem because the liver is the principal detoxifying organ and maintains metabolic homeostasis. The liver metabolizes various compounds that produce free radicals (FR). However, antioxidants scavenge FR and maintain the oxidative/antioxidative balance in the liver. When the liver oxidative/antioxidative balance is disrupted, the state is termed oxidative stress. Oxidative stress leads to deleterious processes in the liver and produces liver diseases. Therefore, restoring antioxidants is essential to maintain homeostasis. One method of restoring antioxidants is to consume natural compounds with antioxidant capacity. The objective of this review is to provide information pertaining to various antioxidants found in food that have demonstrated utility in improving liver diseases.
