Psychometric Properties of a Turkish Version of The Psychosocial Needs Inventory; Sampling from Oncology Patients

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to assess the reliability and validity of the Psychosocial Needs Inventory (PNI) among Turkish oncology patients.

METHODS

A methodological study was conducted with 1,547 oncology patients. This validation study was divided into two phases. Phase 1 included translation of the PNI according to World Health Organization recommendations, investigation of content validity by experts, and a pilot study involving 136 participants. Phase 2 included a validity and reliability analysis of the PNI. Data analysis comprised exploratory (EFA) and confirmatory factor analyses (CFA), Cronbach's alpha, test-retest reliability, Hotelling's T2 test and item-total score correlation, and the Content Validity Index (CVI).

RESULTS

For the phase 1, the CVI for items and scale were >.75 and .883, respectively. Cronbach's alpha values of the subdimensions ranged between 0.84 and 0.94. The test-retest analyses of the subdimensions showed correlation coefficients based on the pilot test (p < .001). For the phase 2, based on the fit indices in confirmatory factor analysis, the structures of the dimensions "Importance" and "Satisfaction" were acceptable. Cronbach's alpha values of the subdimensions ranged between 0.84 to 0.94 in the "Importance" dimension and 0.86 to 0.94 in the "Satisfaction" dimension. As a result of EFA, the Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin, Bartlett's test (p < 0.001) and PNI Importance explained at 68.46% and PNI Satisfaction at 70.15% of the total variance by the six-factor structure. CFA showed that the indices and validity, including content validity, convergent validity were satisfactory.

CONCLUSION

The PNI, which was found to be a valid and reliable measurement tool, can be used to determine the psychosocial needs of cancer patients.

IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE

Health professionals need to use the PNI to measure their importance to cancer patients' psychosocial needs and assess their satisfaction with meeting them to improve holistic care and support.

Nursing interventions for pediatric patients with cancer and their families: a scoping review protocol

OBJECTIVE

This scoping review will identify and map available nursing interventions provided by pediatric oncology hospital services to pediatric patients with cancer and/or their family members. The aim is to develop a comprehensive overview of the characteristics of nursing interventions and to identify potential knowledge gaps.

INTRODUCTION

Clinical nursing care is an essential part of pediatric oncology. In pediatric oncology nursing research, a shift from explanatory studies to intervention studies is recommended. The body of research on interventions for pediatric oncology patients and their families has grown in recent years. However, there are no reviews on nursing interventions currently available for pediatric oncology.

INCLUSION CRITERIA

Studies will be considered for inclusion if they refer to pediatric patients with cancer, and/or family members of a pediatric patient with cancer, who have received non-pharmacological and non-procedural nursing interventions provided by a pediatric oncology hospital service. Studies must also be peer-reviewed, published from the year 2000 onward, and written in English, Danish, Norwegian, or Swedish.

METHODS

The review will be conducted in accordance with the JBI guidelines for scoping reviews. A 3-step search strategy will be followed using the PCC mnemonic (Population, Concept, Context). The databases to be searched will include Scopus, PubMed, CINAHL, PsyclNFO, and Embase. The identified studies will be screened based on title and abstract, as well as full text, by 2 independent reviewers. Data will be extracted and managed in Covidence. A summary of the results will be presented as a narrative description, supported by tables.

Nursing Practice and Care Structure for Children and Their Families in Need of Pediatric Palliative and End-of-Life Care in Japan: A Nationwide Survey

Many nurses experience difficulties in pediatric palliative care practice. The study aimed to describe the current situation and structure of pediatric palliative and end-of-life care nursing practices for children and their families in Japan. The research subjects were nurses working in hospitals; facilities for persons with severe physical, motor, and intellectual disabilities; and home-visit nursing stations. The practice ratio was calculated using a 79-item survey form, and factor analysis was conducted. A total of 113 facilities (acceptance rate: 26.5%) and 777 nurses (response rate: 44.6%) responded. Five items had a "Practicing" ratio of ≥90%. In factor analysis, 7 domains were identified: "preparing to face the time of death with the child and family," "ensuring child-centered care," "managing symptoms with the child and family," "considering and coordinating for the child's peaceful time of death," "understanding and respecting the culture of the child and family," "assessing the child and family as a whole person," and "performing self-reflection on an ethical issue." Nurses' practice of pediatric palliative care differs by practice domain. It is necessary to reflect on the educational programs under development to improve the quality of life of children and their families.

Emotion Regulation Flexibility and Electronic Patient-Reported Outcomes: A Framework for Understanding Symptoms and Affect Dynamics in Pediatric Psycho-Oncology

The individual’s ability to conceive and regulate the broad spectrum of their human emotions is closely linked to their mental health. The implications of a serious disease such as cancer represent an extraordinary burden to these internal coping mechanisms, especially in the case of young patients. Regarding their well-being and support, it is therefore of particular interest for caregivers to be able to follow the dynamics of the patient’s emotional world and perceptions. Technical progress enables new possibilities for data collection through tools for digital patient self-reports while simultaneously creating new challenges. Within the scope of this article, we provide an overview of the literature on this topic, outlining the current strengths and weaknesses and possible perspectives on digital aids, especially in terms of capturing the flexibility, fluctuations and early detection of symptom changes.

Abstract

Emotion dysregulation is regarded as a driving mechanism for the development of mental health problems and psychopathology. The role of emotion regulation (ER) in the management of cancer distress and quality of life (QoL) has recently been recognized in psycho-oncology. The latest technological advances afford ways to assess ER, affective experiences and QoL in child, adolescent and young adult (CAYA) cancer patients through electronic patient-reported outcomes (ePRO) in their daily environment in real-time. Such tools facilitate ways to study the dynamics of affect and the flexibility of ER. However, technological advancement is not risk-free. We critically review the literature on ePRO in cancer existing models of ER in pediatric psycho-oncology and analyze strength, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of ePRO with a focus on CAYA cancer research and care. Supported by personal study-based experiences, this narrative review serves as a foundation to propose a novel methodological and metatheoretical framework based on: (a) an extended notion of ER, which includes its dynamic, adaptive and flexible nature and focuses on processes and conditions rather than fixed categorical strategies; (b) ePRO as a means to measure emotion regulation flexibility and affect dynamics; (c) identifying early warning signals for symptom change via ePRO and building forecasting models using dynamical systems theory.

Integrated Behavioral Health in Pediatric Subspecialty Clinics

Millions of children and adolescents are living with a chronic condition. It is common for mental and behavioral health challenges to arise during their courses of illness. With the complexity of care needed, pediatric subspecialty providers have recognized the need to integrate behavioral health interventions into practice. Continued research in this area has allowed for focused behavioral interventions, particularly in diabetes and asthma. Adult congenital heart programs have adapted a similar model of care and have shown promising success in promotion of health. More established programs have been in existence for childhood cancer and cystic fibrosis.
