The quality and content analysis of YouTube videos about chemotherapy for children

PURPOSE

This study undertook a systematic examination of YouTube videos about chemotherapy for pediatric patients, with a primary focus on assessing the videos' quality, content, and reliability.

METHOD

The research was conducted by searching YouTube using the keywords "chemotherapy for children" and "chemotherapy for pediatric," employing filters for "worldwide" and "all categories." The top 100 videos, based on popularity, were selected for evaluation according to the power analysis calculation. Two independent experts in pediatric oncology reviewed these videos. Video characteristics were recorded: length, view count, likes, dislikes, view ratio, and video-like ratio. The Video Power Index was calculated to measure video popularity. The modified DISCERN and Global Quality Scale (GQS) assessed the videos for quality and reliability.

RESULTS

The 100 videos were analyzed. Official health institutions uploaded 54%, while independent users contributed 46%. Independent user uploads garnered significantly more views than official health institutions (p = .006). The number of likes, view ratio, and Video Power Index of independent users' videos were significantly higher than official health institutions' videos (respectively, p = .007, .007, and .008). On the other hand, the modified DISCERN score and GQS were significantly higher in YouTube videos of official health institutions than in independent users (p < .001). A strong correlation was observed between the modified DISCERN score and GQS (r = .879, p < .001).

CONCLUSION

This study provides valuable insights into the YouTube videos on pediatric chemotherapy, emphasizing the need to improve the quality and reliability of online health information for this vulnerable population.

The Effect of Progressive Muscle Relaxation Exercises on Sleep Quality in Cancer Patients Undergoing Chemotherapy: A Randomized Controlled Study

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of progressive muscle relaxation exercises (PMRE) on sleep quality in patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment and experiencing disturbed sleep.

METHODS

The prospective randomized controlled study was conducted between March and September 2022 with 69 patients (intervention group: 34 patients, control group: 35 patients) in a hospital chemotherapy unit. During the data collection process, the "Personal Information Form" and "Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI)" were utilized. Patients in the intervention group performed PMRE twice a day for 8 weeks. Patients in the control group received routine care at the clinic without additional intervention. For data analysis, Student's t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, Fisher's exact test, and chi-square test were used.

RESULTS

The sociodemographic attributes of patients within both the intervention and control groups exhibited comparability. However, notable distinctions emerged in the PSQI Global sleep score and PSQI subdimension scores, encompassing sleep latency and duration, subjective sleep quality, habitual sleep efficiency, sleep disturbance, and daytime dysfunction between the two groups. The study found a notable difference in scores between the patients in the intervention group and those in the control group. The patients who received the intervention had significantly lower scores (P < .001).

CONCLUSION

The study revealed that PMRE was beneficial in improving sleep quality in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy who had poor sleep quality.

IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE

Oncology nurses may consider using PMRE to improve the sleep quality of cancer patients receiving chemotherapy.

A Biofeedback Based Virtual Reality Game for Pediatric Population (BioVirtualPed): A Feasibility Trial

OBJECTIVE

This trial aims to assess the acceptability, feasibility, and safety of BioVirtualPed, a biofeedback-based virtual reality (VR) game designed to reduce pain, anxiety, and fear in children undergoing medical procedures.

METHODS

An Oculus Quest 2 headset was used in the VR experience, respiratory data was captured using an ADXL354 accelerometer, and these data were integrated into the game with ArdunioUno software. The sample of this study consisted of 15 pediatric oncology patients aged 6 to 12 years between July and August 2023. BioVirtualPed's acceptability, feasibility, and safety were evaluated through child and expert feedback, alongside metrics including the System Usability Scale, Wong-Baker Pain Rating Scale, Child Fear Scale, Child Anxiety Scale-Status, Satisfaction Scoring, and various feasibility and safety parameters.

RESULTS

Regarding the acceptability, the expert evaluation showed a mean score of 122.5 ± 3.53, indicating high usability for the system. All children provided positive feedback, and both children and their mothers reported high satisfaction with using BioVirtualPed. The BioVirtualPed was feasible for reducing children's pain, fear, and anxiety levels. All the children complied with the game, and no one withdrew from the trial. BioVirtualPed did not cause symptoms of dizziness, vomiting, or nausea in children and was found to be safe for children.

CONCLUSION

The findings showed that BioVirtualPed meets the following criteria: feasibility, user satisfaction, acceptability, and safety. It is a valuable tool to improve children's experience undergoing port catheter needle insertion procedures.

IMPLICATION FOR NURSING PRACTICE

Integration of VR interventions with BioVirtualPed into routine nursing care practices has the potential to effectively manage the pain, anxiety, and fear experienced by children undergoing medical procedures. The safety, feasibility, and acceptability results are promising for further research and integration into pediatric healthcare practice.

Challenges experienced by pediatric nurses in the process of developing innovative products: A qualitative study

OBJECTIVE

As essential healthcare providers, nurses are key to contributing innovations to improve the quality of care. This study aimed to explore the challenges pediatric nurses face in developing and patenting innovative products.

METHOD

A qualitative descriptive design has been used in this study. The study sample consists of pediatric nurses who had developed innovative products and successfully obtained product registrations. Purposive sampling was used to select 17 pediatric nurses who met the inclusion criteria. Data were collected through semi-structured, individual, in-depth interviews.

RESULTS

Two main themes and two related subthemes were identified. The first main theme is 'product development and management challenges.' The subthemes of this theme are 'unknown ecosystem' and 'burnout.' The second theme is 'protecting ideas and innovation.' The subthemes of this theme are 'fear of idea theft' and 'dead patents.'

CONCLUSION

Nurses face challenges, such as taking part in an unfamiliar innovation ecosystem, burnout due to long processes, and fear of idea theft. At the same time, commercialization of these innovations and market demand emerge as additional challenges.

PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS

Identifying the challenges experienced by pediatric nurses during the innovation process can help to develop strategies to overcome difficulties, create an innovation culture, and increase the quality of pediatric patient care.

The Effect of Psychosocial Support Videos Provided by the Community on Disease Attitudes and Symptoms of Pediatric Oncology Patients: Randomized Controlled Study

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to evaluate the impact of psychosocial support videos provided by the community on the attitudes of pediatric oncology patients aged between 10 and 18 years toward their illness and treatment-related symptoms.

DATA SOURCES

This prospective randomized controlled study was conducted with 52 pediatric oncology patients aged between 10 and 18. The data were collected using the Information Form, Child Attitude Towards Illness Scale (CATIS), and Memorial Symptom Assessment Scale (MSAS). When the control group received standard care, the intervention group received psychosocial support videos provided by the community at the beginning of the week for 1 month.

CONCLUSION

This study suggests that the implemented intervention positively affected pediatric patients' symptom management, psychological well-being, and attitudes toward their illness. Considering that today's adolescents have grown up in the age of technology and show great interest in technology and media use, it is clear that psychosocial support videos may attract the attention of this age group. Producing and sharing similar content for other children with similar health problems may positively affect the psychosocial health outcomes of pediatric patients.

IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE

It has been found that it is beneficial to include community-supported psychosocial support in the nursing care of pediatric oncology patients. For this reason, it is recommended that nurses actively participate in developing psychosocial support strategies and take the lead in creating and making the content accessible.

Psychometric Properties of the Turkish CardioToxicity Management Self-Efficacy Scale for Nurses

OBJECTIVES

This study was conducted to evaluate the validity and reliability of the CardioToxicity Management Self-Efficacy Scale (NSS-CTC) in Turkey.

METHOD

This methodological and descriptive study was undertaken with 204 oncology nurses. Information was gathered using a descriptive questionnaire and the NSS-CTC instrument. In the validity analysis of the scale, explanatory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were used. In the reliability analysis, Cronbach α coefficient and Pearson correlation analysis were used to examine item-total score correlations, and Student t-test was used for test-retest analysis.

RESULTS

The scale, characterized by a two-dimensional structure confirmed through factor analysis, exhibited an explained variance rate of 60.44%. The factor loadings exceeded the threshold of 0.30, and all fitness indices surpassed the criterion of 0.90. Furthermore, the root-mean-square error of approximation (RMSEA) fell below 0.080 and demonstrated statistical significance. The scale demonstrated strong internal consistency, as indicated by the overall Cronbach α coefficient of 0.930, with its subdimensions exhibiting similarly high reliability, reflected in Cronbach α values of 0.871 and 0.912, respectively.

CONCLUSION

The NSS-CTS is a valid and reliable tool specifically developed for evaluating nurses' self-efficacy in the context of oncology wards, particularly in managing cardiotoxicity resulting from cancer treatments.

IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE

This newly developed scale holds significant promise in gauging nurses' confidence levels when confronted with the intricacies of cardiotoxicity management. It responds to the growing imperative for nurses to continually enhance their knowledge and skills to effectively address the evolving challenges associated with cardiotoxicity in cancer care.

Prediction of family-centered care on the unmet care needs of parents of pediatric oncology patients and their psychosocial problems

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES

It was aimed to determine the predictive power of family-centered care of parents of children with cancer on their unmet care needs and psychosocial problems (anxiety, depression, stress). This study was conducted as a descriptive, correlational, and cross-sectional study.

DESIGN/METHODS

The study was conducted on 136 parents at a university hospital between January and September 2023, involving parents of children receiving care at the pediatric oncology clinic. Data collection instruments included an Information Form, Family Inventory of Needs Pediatric II (FINPED-II), Family-Centered Care Scale (FCCS), and Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21). Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS 28, employing Pearson correlation analysis and linear regression to assess the relationships between variables.

RESULTS

The study revealed significant positive correlations between Family-Centered Care and Met Needs (r = .676, p < .001) and significant negative correlations between Met Needs and Stress scores (r = -.256, p < .001). Additionally, there were positive correlations between Anxiety and Depression scores (r = .700, p < .001), Anxiety and Stress scores (r = .768, p < .001), and Depression and Stress scores (r = .835, p < .001). Family-centered care significantly predicted Met Needs (p < .001) and accounted for 47% of the variation in Anxiety, Depression, Stress, and Family Inventory of Needs scores.

CONCLUSION

The findings highlight that family-centered care significantly predicts Met Needs, emphasizing its pivotal role in supporting parents of children with cancer. These findings underscore the importance of family-centered care in pediatric oncology, but also point to the need for further studies to address identified limitations and provide a comprehensive understanding of this complex healthcare dynamic.

Effect of virtual reality on pain during burn dressing in children: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

BACKGROUND

Burn dressing, a necessary and regular procedure for burn management, causes significant pain and distress for children. Recent technological advancements in VR have opened up new possibilities for pain management in children undergoing burn dressing. However, there is limited evidence regarding their efficacy in burn dressing specifically. This study aims to synthesize and analyze the effect of VR on pain during burn dressing in children.

METHODS

In this review, we investigated studies from PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane, MEDLINE, CINAHL, Scopus and Google Scholar databases that met inclusion criteria. We also assessed the studies' methodological quality with the Cochrane and JBI checklists. This study was performed based on the Guidelines of Systematic Reporting of Examination presented in the PRISMA checklist. The search protocol has been registered at the PROSPERO International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews.

RESULTS

A total of six published studies including 241 pediatric patients were included in this review. The meta-analysis results showed a significant effect of VR intervention on the pain levels of children (Hedge's g = -1199, Q = 31,106, I2 = 83,926%, p < 0.001).

CONCLUSION

Findings from this study show that VR is a promising and effective intervention for reducing pain scores in children undergoing dressing changes for burn injuries.

IMPLACATION TO PRACTICE

Our meta-analysis suggest that the significant potential of integrating VR into clinical practice, presenting a non-pharmacological intervention to reduce pain during dressing changes in pediatric burn patients. Implementing VR in healthcare settings can lead to improved pain management and better patient outcomes for pediatric population.

The effect of family-centered care education on pediatric nurses' attitudes and clinical practices: Nurse and parent perception

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

Family-centered care (FCC) is a crucial and dynamic philosophy within 21st-century pediatric nursing, offering numerous benefits for both children and their families. It is essential for pediatric nurses to be well-versed in the FCC approach and related practices. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of nurse training on nurses' attitudes towards FCC and on nurses' clinical practices related to FCC.

METHODS

This study utilized a pretest-posttest, single-blind (for nurses and parents), and prospective design. The sample consisted of nurses (n = 41) employed at a university hospital's pediatric clinics and parents (n = 256) with infants or children admitted to these clinics. Data collection involved the Nurse Information Form, Parent and Child Information Form, Family-Centered Care Scale (FCCS), and Family-Centered Care Attitude Scale (FCCAS).

RESULTS

A significant difference was observed between nurses' pre- and post-training FCCAS median scores (p < 0.05). However, no statistically significant difference was detected between the median FCCS scores of parents whose children were cared for by nurses before and after the training (p > 0.05).

CONCLUSION

Following the FCC training provided to pediatric nurses, their attitudes towards the necessity and importance of FCC significantly improved compared to the pre-training period. However, no significant difference was found in the perceived FCC practices of parents whose children received inpatient treatment during the pre-and post-training periods.

IMPLICATIONS TO PRACTICE

Training is important in improving pediatric nurses' attitudes towards FCC. Planned training on FCC should be provided for nurses. Difficulties in pediatric nurses' FCC practices should be identified. In addition, FCC practices should be implemented as a policy in hospitals and pediatric clinics and nurses should be supported to ensure the implementation of FCC practices.

The effects of child health nursing curriculum-integrated therapeutic activities on therapeutic communication skills of nursing students: Non-randomized study

BACKGROUND

Effective therapeutic communication with hospitalized children is increasingly recognized as crucial for child-centered care in all healthcare settings. The quantity and quality of training nurses receive to promote and enhance nurse-child communication are vital. This study aims to evaluate the impact of planned therapeutic communication activities for the Child Health Nursing Course on the therapeutic communication skills of nursing students.

METHOD

A non-randomized study with a pre-test and post-test design was conducted with 28 junior nursing students in Turkey. Data were collected using an 'Information Form' and the 'Therapeutic Communication Skills Scale for Nursing Students'. The Child Health Nursing Course curriculum incorporated lectures with various activity designs to enhance students' therapeutic communication skills.

RESULTS

The curriculum-integrated therapeutic activities significantly decreased non-therapeutic communication skills in students, with a large effect size [d: 0.827, 95% CI: (0.393)-(1.296)]. Furthermore, the activities led to a significant increase in Therapeutic Communication Skills-1 with a large effect size [d: -0.943, 95% CI: (-1.416) - (-0.513)], and improved Therapeutic Communication Skills-2 with a large effect size [d: -1.285, 95% CI: (-1.827) - (-0.804)].

CONCLUSION

The findings indicate that therapeutic activities effectively improved the therapeutic communication skills of nursing students.

PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS

Integrating therapeutic activities into the Child Health Nursing Course curriculum is recommended to enhance nursing students' therapeutic communication skills.

Psychometric Properties of the Turkish Version of the Nurse Spiritual Therapeutic Scale for Oncology Patients and Caregivers

This study evaluated the Turkish version of the Nurse Spiritual Therapeutic Scale for assessing oncology patients' and caregivers' needs. It involved 200 participants from July 2022 to May 2023. The scale demonstrated high validity (content validity index = 0.97) and good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.879). Factor analysis revealed a 20-item single-factor structure with satisfactory representation (factor loadings: 0.29-0.89). Item-total score correlations indicated moderate to strong relationships (0.236-0.761). The model showed a good fit (goodness-of-fit indices > 0.90). The Turkish version of the scale is valid and reliable for assessing oncology patients' and caregivers' spiritual care needs.

The Effect of 2 Different Distraction Methods on Pain, Fear, and Anxiety Levels During Venous Blood Draw in Children in a Pediatric Emergency Unit: A Randomized Controlled Study

BACKGROUND

Blood draw procedures can cause pain, fear, and anxiety in the pediatric population.

PURPOSE

To compare the effects of watching cartoons either with virtual reality (VR) or via a tablet on pain, fear, and anxiety during venous blood draw procedures in children.

METHODS

A randomized controlled study was conducted with 159 children aged 5 to 12 years in the pediatric emergency unit. The 3 groups included cartoons with VR (n = 53) or a tablet (n = 53), and a control group (n = 53).

RESULTS

Children in the 2 intervention groups had lower perceptions of pain, fear, and anxiety, with those watching cartoons via VR having the lowest perceptions.

CONCLUSIONS

Findings from this study showed a reduction in the perception of pain, fear, and anxiety in children who watched cartoons with VR or tablets during blood draw procedures. Nurses should consider using these nonpharmacological methods to reduce pain, fear, and anxiety, among pediatric patients.

Nursing care approaches to oral mucositis in pediatric oncology clinics: a cross-sectional study from Türkiye

PURPOSE

It is important to determine the approaches for oral mucositis (OM) care in pediatric oncology clinics to reflect the profile of practices. The aim of this study was to report on current nursing care approaches for OM in Türkiye.

METHODS

The descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted with nurse managers in pediatric oncology centers in Türkiye between April and December 2022. The data were obtained online by reaching pediatric oncology nurse managers. The data was collected with the "Oral Mucositis Care Application Form" developed by the researchers based on current literature.

RESULTS

The study reached approximately 60% (n = 41) of pediatric oncology clinics across Türkiye. Oral assessment of children was mainly conducted by nurses (95.1%), and 53.7% of clinics used the WHO Oral Mucositis Assessment Scale. To prevent OM, oral care routines were performed twice a day (36.6%) using sodium bicarbonate (61%) and 0.9% sodium chloride (26.8%) agents. For oral mucositis management, pharmacological agents included glutamine (oral) (51.2%), chlorhexidine (43.9%), and benzydamine hydrochloride (36.6%), while non-pharmacological agents included black mulberry syrup (41.5%), honey (19.8%), and chewing gum (9.8%). Chlorhexidine and benzydamine hydrochloride were used for all mucositis grades, while glutamine was frequently used for grades 2 and above.

CONCLUSIONS

The study revealed that the practices related to preventing and managing oral mucositis in pediatric oncology clinics in Türkiye are heterogeneous. These findings will contribute to the existing literature on the multidisciplinary, systematic, and evidence-based approaches used in oral mucositis care in Türkiye.

Effect of Biofeedback-Based Interventions on the Psychological Outcomes of Pediatric Populations: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

We performed a systematic and meta-analytic review of biofeedback-based interventions on psychological outcomes among pediatric populations. The literature search for this study was conducted in eight databases, including PubMed, the Cochrane Library, Scopus, CINAHL, Embase (OVID), Web of Science, PsycINFO (all via Ovid SP), and Google Scholar. The methodological quality of the studies was assessed using the Critical Appraisal Checklists for experimental and quasi-experimental studies that was developed by the Joanna Briggs Institute. We analyzed the effects of biofeedback-based interventions on psychological outcomes in the pediatric population by following the Preferred Reporting System for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis. This systematic review and meta-analysis included nine studies with a total sample size of 658 children. In this study, EEG, EMG, and heart rate variability biofeedback were utilized to treat psychological symptoms in children. All studies focused on anxiety, with only one studying depression. As a result, it was found that all types of biofeedback effectively reduced children's anxiety levels. It was recommended that biofeedback-based interventions should be used to reduce children's anxiety.

The incidence and prevalence of medical device-related pressure injuries in pediatric patients: Systematic review and meta-analysis

PROBLEM

To determine the pooled incidence and prevalence rate of medical device-related pressure injuries(MDRPIs) using the Braden QD scale, medical devices that frequently cause MDRPIs, and anatomical locations that are vulnerable to them.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Using the Braden QD scale, being published in English between 01/01/2018-and 01/03/2023.

METHODS

This study was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis recommendations and registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews database (No: CRD42021276501).

SAMPLE

A total of 7 studies with 25,742 pediatric patients were included.

RESULTS

The pooled prevalence and cumulative incidence of hospital-acquired pressure injuries(HAPIs) were 7.8% (95% CI: 5.2-11.4%) and 3.9% (95% CI: 0.5-24.6%) respectively, and the incidence rate was 8.2/1000 person-days (95% CI: 2.4-14.2/1000 person-days). The pooled prevalence and cumulative incidence of MDRPIs were 7% (95% CI: 5.5-8.8%) and 5% (95% CI: 3.2-7.8%) respectively, and the incidence rate was 6.7/1000 person-days (95% CI, 0.11-13.4/1000 person-days). The most affected anatomical locations were the face (29.1%), ankle/foot (20.1%), and head (15.7%). Medical devices that frequently caused MDRPIs were external monitoring devices (24.5%), respiratory devices (22.8%), and supportive/securing devices (14.9%).

CONCLUSIONS

According to the current systematic review and meta-analyses, the incidence and prevalence of HAPIs and MDRPIs are moderate to high.

IMPLICATIONS

The findings suggested that healthcare providers should pay more attention to reducing HAPIs and MDRPIs and future studies should be conducted to understand their characteristics and risk factors.

Comparison of Heparin and Saline for Prevention of Central Venous Catheter Occlusion in Pediatric Oncology: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

OBJECTIVE

The management of central venous catheter (CVC) occlusion remains an area without clear evidence-based guidelines. Studies have been conducted that compare the use of heparin and normal saline for reducing thrombosis, but the evidence is not strong enough to suggest a significant advantage of one over the other. Therefore, the study aimed to assess the effectiveness of heparin and normal saline flushing in preventing CVC occlusion in pediatric patients with cancer.

DATA SOURCES

A comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane, MEDLINE, CINAHL, Embase, World Health Organization International Clinical Trials Registry Platform, and ClinicalTrials.gov platform using specific keywords. The search was conducted until March 2022. Five randomized controlled trials are included in this study.

CONCLUSION

Five studies with a total of 316 pediatric cancer patients met the inclusion criteria. The studies were found to be heterogeneous due to variations in the types of cancer, heparin concentration, flushing frequency of CVCs, and methods used to measure occlusion. Despite these differences, there was no significant difference in the effect of flushing with heparin and normal saline in preventing CVC occlusion. The analysis revealed that normal saline is as effective as heparin in preventing CVC occlusion among pediatric cancer patients.

IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE

This systematic review and meta-analysis demonstrated that there is no significant difference between the use of heparin and normal saline flushing in preventing CVC occlusion among pediatric cancer patients. Considering the potential risks of heparin, the use of normal saline flushing may be recommended to prevent CVC obstruction.

Analysis of the prevalence and risk factors of pressure injuries in the hospitalized pediatric population: A retrospective study

BACKGROUND

Pressure injury (PI) is an essential indicator of the quality of nursing care and affects hospitalized newborns and children. However, studies on the prevalence of PI and associated risk factors in children are limited.

AIMS

This study aimed to analyze the prevalence of PI and risk factors affecting the development of PI in the hospitalized pediatric population.

METHODS

This was a descriptive, retrospective study. Data were obtained via electronic medical records of 6350 pediatric patients admitted to a university hospital between January 2019 and April 2022. Ethics committee approval was obtained. Patient medical records and data associated with PI and medical treatment were collected through the 'Information Form,' 'Braden Scale,' 'Braden Q Scale,' 'Pressure Ulcer Staging Form,' and 'Pediatric Nutrition Risk Score (PNRS).' Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal Wallis test, and Multilinear Regression analysis.

RESULTS

More patients (66.2%) were males, and 49.2% of the children were 0-12 months old. 2368 out of 6350 pediatric patients were treated in the PICU. It was determined that a total of 143 PI occurred in 59 patients from PICU. The PI prevalence was 2.25% for all patients and 6.04% for PICU patients. Twenty-one percent of the patients had medical device-related PI (MDRPIs), 35.7% of PI occurred in the occiput, 13.3% in the coccyx/sacrum, and 67.1% of PI was Deep Tissue Injury. In the multiple regression model, children's albumin level, hemoglobin level, PNRS scores, Body Mass Index, and length of hospital stay significantly affected BRADEN scores. They were explained 30.3% of their scores of Braden.

CONCLUSION

Despite the limitations of the retrospective study, the prevalence of PI in the pediatric population in this study was lower than that reported in previous studies, but the prevalence of MDRPIs was higher. Based on the study results, it is recommended to implement preventive interventions for MDRPIs and plan prospective studies.

Development and psychometric analysis of a Pediatric Oncology Nurses' Educational Needs Scale

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES

It is important to determine the educational needs of pediatric oncology nurses in order to maximize and implement nursing care interventions. Therefore, this study aims to develop a valid and reliable measurement tool to determine pediatric oncology nurses' educational needs and examine its psychometric properties.

DESIGN/METHODS

This methodological study was conducted with 215 pediatric oncology nurses in Turkey between December 2021 and July 2022. Data were collected with the "Nurse Information Form" and "Pediatric Oncology Nurses' Educational Needs Scale." IBM SPSS 21.0 and IBM AMOS 25.0 software programs were used for data analysis, and descriptive statistics were used to analyze numeric variables. Exploration and confirmatory factor analyses were performed to determine the scale's factorial structure.

RESULTS

The factorial analysis was used to test the structural validity of the scale. A five-factor structure consisting of 42 items was developed. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient for "Illness" was .978, "Chemotherapy and Side Effect" was .978, "Another Therapy and Side Effect" was .974, "Palliative Care" was .967, "Supportive Care" was .985, and the total score was .990. Fit indices resulting from the study were χ² /SD: 3.961, root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA): 0.072, goodness-of-fit index (GFI): 0.95, comparative-of-fit index (CFI): 0.96, and normed fit index (NFI): 0.95.

CONCLUSION

The Pediatric Oncology Nurses' Educational Needs Scale is a valid and reliable scale for pediatric oncology nurses to determine their educational needs.

The effect of evidence-based pain assessment protocol in pediatric emergency department on nurses' knowledge, attitudes, and practices towards pain

PURPOSE

This study aimed to determine the effect of the "Evidence-Based Pain Assessment Protocol in Pediatric Emergency Department" on nurses' knowledge, attitudes, and practices towards pain.

METHOD

A pretest-posttest quasi-experimental study was conducted with 11 nurses. Before the protocol was applied, 337 nurses' records were assessed for one month. Subsequently, the nurses were educated in the Evidence-Based Pain Assessment Protocol in the Pediatric Emergency Department. After the education, the researchers assessed 315 nurses' records for one month to evaluate the protocol's effect on the nurses' clinical practice.

RESULTS

The study found no significant difference in the mean scores of nurses' Pediatric Pain Knowledge and Attitude Scale between the pre-and post-education periods (p > 0.05). However, there was a significant difference in the types of pain assessment tools used between these two periods (p < 0.001). In the post-education period, the frequency of both pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions implemented increased significantly compared to the pre-education period (p < 0.001). Additionally, the study found that the frequency of nurses describing pain and reassessing pain increased significantly in the post-education period compared to the pre-education period (p < 0.001).

CONCLUSIONS

The study found that there was no significant change in the nurses' Pediatric Pain Knowledge and Attitude Scale scores before and after the training. However, it was observed that the frequency of nurses reassessing pain, using non-pharmacological interventions, and describing pain increased after the protocol was applied in the emergency department. In particular, therapeutic communication and the walking method were used more frequently in the post-training period among the non-pharmacological interventions applied by the nurses for pain.

The effect of an interactive robot on children's post-operative anxiety, mobilization, and parents' satisfaction; randomized controlled study

PURPOSE

To evaluate the effect of an interactive robot on Turkish children's post-operative anxiety, mobilization, and parents' satisfaction related to post-operative care.

METHOD

A randomized controlled study was conducted with 84 children who will undergo day surgery aged 5-10 years and their parents at a university hospital between June 2020-April 2022. The interactive robot was provided to accompany the children during the postoperative mobilization. Children in the control group received standard care during mobilization. Data were collected using the Personal Information Form, Children's State Anxiety (CSA), Parental Satisfaction Scale-Visual Analog Scale, and Mobilization Chart.

RESULTS

It was determined that the CSA score of the children in the control group were higher than the intervention group before their first mobilization after surgery (p = 0.005). During the first (p = 0.042) and second (p = 0.012) mobilization, it was determined that the mobilization duration of children in the intervention group was longer than the children in the control group. It was found that the parents of the children in the intervention group had a high level of satisfaction.

CONCLUSION

It has been determined that interactive robots positively affect postoperative mobilization in children undergoing day surgery, reduce the anxiety level of children before mobilization, and increase the duration of mobilization. In addition, the use of interactive robots increased parents' satisfaction with post-operative mobilization care.

PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS

Using interactive robots to reduce the stress and anxiety of children during the perioperative process can be a promising approach to improve their recovery by providing early mobilization.

Investigation of psychometric properties of Turkish version of nursing students' attitudes and beliefs towards Childhood Obesity Scale

AIM

This study aimed to evaluate the Turkish psychometric properties of The Attitudes and Beliefs of Nursing Students Towards the Childhood Overweight Scale.

METHODS

The study was conducted with 219 nursing students. The data were obtained with the 'Information Form' and the 'Attitudes and Beliefs of Nursing Students Towards Childhood Overweight. Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology guidelines was implemented in the study.

RESULT

Original scale was created using the Attitudes Towards Obese Person Scale (ATOP) and the Beliefs About Obese Persons Scale (BAOP). ATOP consists of 13 items and two sub-dimensions (self-concept, social relationships) in a 5-point Likert type that evaluates nursing students' attitudes towards childhood obesity. BAOP is 5-point Likert-type and consists of 6 items that evaluate nursing students' beliefs on childhood obesity. When the item-total score correlations were examined in the study, two items showing a negative correlation in the "ATOP" were removed. Cronbach's alpha was 0.80 for the ATOP and 0.83 for the BAOP. In the exploratory EFA and confirmatory CFA factor analyses, the factor loading of all items was >0.40 for both scales.

CONCLUSION

It was determined that Turkish psychometric properties of the Nursing Students' Attitudes and Beliefs towards Childhood Obesity Scales were valid and reliable.

The effect of buzzy and cold spray on pain, anxiety, and fear of children during venipuncture in pediatric emergency department in Turkey; A randomized controlled study

PURPOSE

It was aimed to evaluate the efficacy of Buzzy and cold spray in reducing pain, anxiety, and fear of children during venipuncture in the emergency department (ED).

METHODS

This study is an experimental, parallel-group (intervention-control), randomized controlled, single-blind design. The study was conducted with 161 children aged 5-12 years in pediatric ED. Data were collected by the 'Personal Information Form', 'Wong Baker-Facial Expression Rating Scale', 'Child Anxiety Statement Scale', and 'Child Fear Inventory'. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, Mann Whitney U test, Kruskal Wallis H test, and Intraclass Correlation.

RESULTS

Descriptive features of the children were homogeneous. 'Wong Baker-Facial Expression Rating Scale', 'Child Anxiety Statement Scale', and 'Child Fear Scale' score averages of the children in the control group were higher than the children in the Buzzy group and the cold spray group (p < 0.001). The pain scores of the Buzzy group were higher than those in the cold spray group (p < 0.001). The anxiety and fear mean scores of the children in the Buzzy and cold spray groups were similar (p > 0.05).

CONCLUSION

It was determined that Buzzy and cold spray were more effective than standard care in reducing the level of pain, anxiety, and fear in children ages 5-12 years during venipuncture in the pediatric emergency. The cold spray was more effective in reducing pain than Buzzy.

PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS

Nurses can use Buzzy and cold sprays to manage the fear, anxiety, and pain associated with venipuncture.

Evaluation of nutrition literacy and nutrition knowledge level in nursing students: a study from Turkey

OBJECTIVE

The determination of nutritional knowledge and nutrition literacy among nursing students will enable nursing departments to establish the needs and solutions to enhance nutrition education in their education programs. Therefore, this study is aimed to evaluate the nutrition literacy and nutrition knowledge level of nursing students.

METHOD

The study data were collected with 'Information Form', 'Anthropometric Measurements', 'Nutrition Knowledge Level Scale for Adults', and 'Evaluation Instrument of Nutrition Literacy on Adults'. Analyzes were performed using descriptive and nonparametric tests.

RESULTS

The score of nutrition knowledge is 56.6 ± 6.8 and 50.5% of them have a good nutrition knowledge level. The total nutrition literacy score is 28.6 ± 4.4 and 91.6% of them have a sufficient nutrition literacy level. It was no significant difference between students' characteristic features and nutrition knowledge score and nutrition literacy total score (p > 0.05). There was a statistically significant positive correlation between the nutrition knowledge score and the nutrition literacy total score and the nutrition literacy sub-sections scores (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

It has been determined that the nutrition knowledge and nutrition literacy levels of nursing students correlated with each other. To improve students' nutrition knowledge levels, as well as to improve their nutrition literacy and prevent non-communicable diseases nutrition lessons should be included in the curriculum.

Effect of chewing gum on the management of chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis in children: Systematic review of experimental studies

OBJECTIVE

It was aimed to systematically synthesise the available literature on examining the effect of chewing gum in the management/reduction of chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis in children.

METHODS

The PRISMA was followed for the systematic review. All published studies obtained from the relevant databases were examined while the research question and inclusion and exclusion criteria were considered. The Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) critical appraisal tools were used to evaluate the quality of the studies.

RESULTS

A total of five studies met the inclusion criteria: three randomised controlled trials (RCT) and two quasi-experimental studies with a total of 461 paediatric oncology patients were included. Heterogeneity was found across all studies regarding the application of gum chewing and regarding the effectiveness of gum chewing. Two RTCs and one quasi-experimental study reported that gum chewing is not effective to reduce severe oral mucositis, but effective to reduce moderate and mild oral mucositis, and one RTC reported that gum chewing is not effective to reduce oral mucositis.

CONCLUSION

Experimental studies particularly randomised controlled trials using rigorous designs, consistent outcome measures, and larger sample sizes are required to determine the efficacy of chewing gum in reducing chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis in paediatric oncology patients. The effects of administered interventions on quality of life of children with cancer in Turkey: A systematic review and meta-analysis

OBJECTIVE

The present systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to analyse the effects of administered interventions on the quality of life of children with cancer in Turkey.

METHODS

The quantitative studies conducted with paediatric oncology patients, analysing the quality of life of Turkish children, and published papers from 2009 to 2019 were searched. Joanna Briggs Institution MAStARI Experimental and Quasi-Experimental Research Control List and Quality Index were used for methodological assessment. Five studies comprising a total of 264 samples were included. Four studies were nonrandomised controlled trials, and one was a quasi-experimental study.

RESULTS

Tests for heterogeneity showed that the studies, which included interventions increasing the quality of life of children with cancer, were heterogeneous. The common effect size of all studies on quality of life was determined as having a strong positive effect.

CONCLUSIONS

This meta-analysis and systematic review contribute to the knowledge of Turkish health care professionals regarding these interventions by producing results with high levels of evidence on the improvement of the quality of life among children with cancer. The present study also significantly raises awareness and encourages health care professionals to implement interventions for the improvement of quality of life among children with cancer.

The Relationship Between Parents' Perceptions of Family-Centered Care and Their Health Care Satisfaction

Aim: This study was conducted to determine the relationship between the perceptions of parents whose children are hospitalized about family-centered care provided in the hospital and their health care satisfaction and the factors affecting them. Methods: This descriptive study was conducted with parents (n=169) of children who were hospitalized in a university hospital in Turkey between May and July 2019. Data were collected with "Child and Family Information Form", "Family-Centered Care Scale" and "PedsQL Health Care Satisfaction Scale". Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, Mann Whitney U, and Spearman correlation tests. Results: The mean age of the children was 6.86±5.63, 51.5% were male, 56.2% were hospitalized before and 88.2% of parents received information about the care and treatment of their children. There was a positive correlation between the parents’ Family-Centered Care Scale and PedsQL Health Care Satisfaction Scale scores and between the age of the children and age of the mother and the PedsQL Health Care Satisfaction Scale scores, the number of children and Family-Centered Care Scale scores of parents. A statistically significant difference was found between the child's previous hospitalization and median scores of the Family-Centered Care Scale, and between whether parents receive information about the care and treatment of their children and the median scores of the PedsQL Health Care Satisfaction Scale. Conclusion: In this study, as the family-centered care that parents expect was met, their health care satisfaction increased. As the age of children and mothers increased, parents' health care satisfaction increased. Health care satisfaction of parents who received information about treatment and care was found higher. The effect of progressive muscle relaxation exercises on compassion satisfaction, burnout, and compassion fatigue of nurse managers

PURPOSE

To investigate the effect of progressive muscle relaxation exercises on compassion satisfaction, burnout, and compassion fatigue of nurse managers.

DESIGN AND METHODS

A pretest, posttest, one-group quasi-experimental study was carried out with 30 nurse managers and they were received "Jacobson: Progressive Muscle Relaxation Exercises" in a group once in a week for 8 weeks.

FINDINGS

After the second month, the mean compassion fatigue (p < 0.01) and the mean burnout scores (p = 0.01) were decreased.

PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS

It is recommended to expand progressive muscle relaxation exercises and to conduct studies in different groups to increase the professional quality of life.

Effects of Virtual Reality on Pain During Venous Port Access in Pediatric Oncology Patients: A Randomized Controlled Study

PURPOSE

Needle procedures are one of the most distressing practices for pediatric oncology patients. Virtual reality (VR) is a distraction method which offers an extremely realistic and interactive virtual environment and helps reduce needle-related pain and distress. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of VR method on pain during venous port access in pediatric oncology patients aged 7 to 18 years.

METHOD

Children who had cancer and were between the ages of 7 and 18 years and undergoing a port-a-cath access were randomly assigned through blocked randomization to either the VR intervention group or control group. A commercially available VR headset was fitted to children in the intervention group. Immediately after the port access, pain scores were obtained from children's self-reports and parents' proxy reports, using the Wong-Baker FACES Pain Rating Scale.

RESULTS

Descriptive characteristics of the children (n = 71) showed a homogeneous distribution between groups. During the procedure, children in the control group (n = 36; 5.03 ± 3.35) experienced more pain than the children in VR group (n = 35; 2.34 ± 2.76; p < .001). Proxy reports of the parents in the experimental group (1.77 ± 2.46) were found to be lower than those in the control group (4.67 ± 2.56; p < .001).

CONCLUSIONS/IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE

VR method is effective for reducing pain during venous port access in pediatric oncology patients. VR should be used as a distraction method during venous port access.

Effect of Gum Chewing on Pain and Anxiety in Turkish Children During Intravenous Cannulation: A Randomized Controlled Study

PURPOSE

Although gum chewing is a simple intervention that can be used for the management of pain and anxiety in the nursing care of children, few studies have assessed this intervention. This study aimed to investigate the effect of gum chewing on pain and anxiety during intravenous (IV) cannulation in children.

DESIGN AND METHODS

This randomized controlled study assessed 73 children aged 6 to 12 years in the general paediatric unit in a university hospital in the Trachy Region, Turkey from April to September 2017. In the experimental group, children chewed gum during the procedure. The standard care was applied to the control group. Data were collected via the Children's Anxiety Pain Scale and the Data Collection Form.

RESULTS

According to the children's self-report and the nurse's report, the pain level of the experimental group was significantly lower than the control group. Although no significant difference was noted between experimental and control groups' anxiety levels, nurses stated higher anxiety levels than children.

CONCLUSIONS

The IV cannulation procedure causes pain and anxiety in children. Nurses reported the perception of a higher level of anxiety during the procedure than the children actually experienced. Gum chewing might reduce pain during IV cannulation. Nurses should consider using gum chewing as a simple nursing implementation to increase the effects of other pharmacological and non-pharmacological techniques for management of children's procedural pain.

PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS

Nurses who work with the children could use gum chewing as a simple, inexpensive, and pleasurable intervention for the management of pain.

Life experiences of adolescents with cancer in Turkey: a phenomenological study

OBJECTIVE

To explore life experiences of adolescents after cancer diagnosis.

METHODS

The phenomenological qualitative study was conducted at the paediatric oncology clinic of a university hospital in Edirne, Turkey, from March 15 to April 1, 2016, and comprised semi-structured interviews with adolescents aged 10-18 years diagnosed with different types of cancer. Data was analysed using Colaizzi's method.

RESULTS

Of the 12 adolescents, 7(58.3%) were boys and 5(41.7%) were girls. The overall mean age was 14.92}2.19. Mean duration of life post-diagnosis was 2.87}2.94 years (range: 1-11 years), and all (100%) of them had undergone chemotherapy. More adolescents experienced shock, sadness, fear, anxiety, curiosity and uncertainty when they learned their diagnosis. Changes related to family included missing their siblings and parents, and feelings of guilt, anger, and sibling jealousy. Adolescents stated that they missed their schools and friends, feared stigmatisation, abandonment and changes related to future. They wanted a stress-free life, to have an occupation, to continue school, and to be independent.

CONCLUSIONS

Cancer changed adolescents' relationships with family and peers, and their feelings and thoughts regarding future. It is important that health professionals, especially nurses, recognise and understand such changes to provide quality care.
