Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aims to evaluate neurogenic dysphagia in individuals with various neurological disorders. METHOD A prospective cross-sectional study was conducted adults with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), stroke, or Parkinson's Disease (PD) who presented with dysphagia. Assessments included the Functional Oral Intake Scale (FOIS) for dietary status, the Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) with Penetration-Aspiration Scale (PAS) for swallowing function, and the Eating Assessment Tool (EAT-10) and Swallow Quality of Life Questionnaire (SWAL-QOL) for dysphagia severity and swallowing/eating-related quality of life (SRQoL), respectively. Statistical analyses included ANOVA. RESULTS The study included 105 participants with MS, stroke, and PD groups. SWAL-QOL scores were significantly higher in the MS and PD groups compared to the stroke group (p = 0.001). Stroke patients had the most severe overall swallowing difficulties, while MS patients experienced the highest rate of aspiration (37 %). Fatigue levels were significantly higher in the MS and PD groups (p = 0.001), and social function scores were lowest in the stroke group (p = 0.041). No significant differences were observed in eating desire, fear of eating, sleep quality, communication, or EAT-10 scores across the groups. CONCLUSION This study highlights the differential impact of neurogenic dysphagia on swallowing function and SRQoL. Although dysphagia is a known issue in acute neurological conditions such as strokes, individuals with progressive diagnoses such as MS should be referred to swallowing clinics at an early stage, keeping in mind that it can lead to serious consequences that can affect their quality of life.

Abstract
Parkinson's disease is one of the vital neurodegenerative ailments attributed to a rise in Alpha-synuclein proteins leading to the advancement of motor and cognitive deterioration. Interestingly, in PD lncRNAs, miRNAs and siRNAs are also key regulators of SNCA and alpha-synuclein aggregation. This review will focus on the roles of these three types of small RNAs in trebling the development of PD through regulating SNCA expression or alpha-synuclein protein mediating the RNA from acting. Parkinson's disease is defined by the build-up of alpha-synuclein protein resulting predominantly from the elevated expression level of the SNCA gene. Non-coding RNAs have gained broad appeal as fundamental modulators of gene expression and protein aggregation dynamics, with significant implications on the aetiology of PD. LncRNAs modulate SNCA transcription and edit epigenetic modifications, while miRNA target mRNA is involved in the stability and translation of count alpha-synuclein. Considering all these data, siRNAs can achieve the precise gene silencing effect that directly induces the downregulation of SNCA mRNA. This review also summarizes some recent reports about the interaction between these ncRNAs with the SNCA gene and alpha-synuclein protein, each through its independent in addition to synergistic mechanisms. This review highlights the possibility of therapeutic interventions to perturb SNCA expression to prevent alpha-synuclein aggregation via targeting ncRNAs that might be spun off novel drug development for PD.

Abstract
Background: Patients with severe dysphagia are usually fed using a nasogastric tube (NGT). Many patients who receive long-term NGT feeding are unable to obtain sufficient nutrients orally immediately after NGT removal. Thus, a transitional period involving oral diet training is required to transition from NGT feeding to exclusive oral feeding. We aimed to investigate the therapeutic effect of oral diet training in indwelling NGT patients with prolonged dysphagia. Methods: A total of 175 patients who were fed using an NGT for more than 4 weeks were enrolled. Their swallowing function was evaluated by a videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS). During the VFSS, patients received thick and thin barium while the NGT was inserted. Then, the patients underwent a VFSS without an NGT thirty minutes after NGT removal. If a patient had no aspiration with NGT inserted during the VFSS, oral diet training combined with NGT feeding was recommended. Results: Of the 49 indwelling NGT patients who were recommended to receive oral diet training, 39 (79.6%) transitioned to exclusive oral feeding. A transition period of 2-8 weeks was required for them to achieve full oral feeding. Patients who were eligible for oral feeding trials showed no significant aspiration during the VFSS with an NGT inserted and had sufficient cough function. Patients who required prolonged NGT feeding and who could not complete oral trials showed significant aspiration during the VFSS when an NGT was inserted. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that oral diet training combined with NGT feeding is safe in patients with prolonged dysphagia who have sufficient cough function and no aspiration during VFSS. We suggest that if the patient is a proper candidate for NGT removal, direct oral feeding training with an NGT inserted could be a useful therapeutic strategy during the transitional period from long-term NGT feeding to successful oral feeding.

Abstract
Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease affecting middle-age and elderly people. Its clinical manifestations include a series of progressive motor and nonmotor symptoms (NMS). Autonomic nervous dysfunction is a kind of NMS that includes constipation, hyperhidrosis, seborrheic dermatitis (sebaceous surface), salivation, sexual dysfunction, voiding dysfunction, and orthostatic hypotension. The incidence of autonomic nervous dysfunction is high, and the clinical manifestations are complex and changeable. It can occur before motor symptoms emerge, is closely related to the prognosis of PD, and affects quality of life seriously. Routine anti-PD drugs have little effect on improving autonomic nervous dysfunctions. Acupuncture for autonomic nervous dysfunction in PD induces a certain effect without adverse reactions, with potential advantages and broad prospects for application. This article summarizes and discusses the pathogenesis of autonomic nerve dysfunction in PD and acupuncture therapy for the condition to serve as a reference for clinical research.

Abstract
Background Dysphagia, or difficulty swallowing, is a prevalent complication of Parkinson's disease (PD), which can significantly impair quality of life. Despite the numerous studies on dysphagia in PD published in various journals, there remains a dearth of bibliometric analysis within this domain. This study thus aims to examine the global patterns of research on dysphagia after PD over the past 20 years, employing a visual analysis. Material and methods This investigation aimed to gather pertinent publications concerning dysphagia in PD from the SCI-Expanded database of the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC), covering the period from 2002 to 2022. To dissect and visually represent the collated corpus, we harnessed the capacities of CiteSpace, VOSviewer and R software for meticulous bibliometric scrutiny. Results The bibliometric study encompassed a total of 692 publications. Within the scope of autocratic nations, the USA emerged as the leading country in the quantity of research outputs. The University of Florida stood out as the most prolific academic entity, with Troche MS being the foremost author, contributing to 21 publications. The journal "Dysphagia" featured as the prime venue for publication. Key trending terms identified over the last 20 years include "Parkinson's disease," "dysphagia," "oropharyngeal dysphagia," and "prevalence." Conclusion Bibliometric analysis on dysphagia in PD offers a detailed overview of the development of scholarly publications, enabling scholars to grasp the current state of research within their field. It also serves as a benchmark for shaping future research directions.

Abstract
Background Dysphagia is a common complication of stroke that can result in serious consequences. In recent years, more and more papers on post-stroke dysphagia have been published in various journals. However, there is still a lack of bibliometric analysis of post-stroke dysphagia. This study visually analyzes the global research situation of post-stroke dysphagia from 2013 to 2022, aiming to explore the current research status, frontier trends, and research hotspots in this field. Methods Articles and reviews relevant to post-stroke dysphagia were obtained and retrieved from the Web of Science core collection database in the last 10 years (from 2013 to 2022). CiteSpace and Microsoft Excel 2019 were used for bibliographic analysis. Results A total of 1,447 articles were included in the analysis. The number of publications showed an overall upward trend, from 72 in 2013 to 262 in 2022. The most influential authors, institutions, journals, and countries were Hamdy S, University of London, Dysphagia, and the People's Republic of China. An analysis of keywords and the literature indicated that current studies in the field of post-stroke dysphagia focused on dysphagia and aspiration, dysphagia classification, dysphagia rehabilitation, and daily living. Conclusion This bibliometric analysis reveals the latest advancements and emerging trends in the field of post-stroke dysphagia, spanning the years 2013 to 2022. It highlights the paramount importance of conducting large-scale randomized controlled trials examining the efficacy of dysphagia screening protocols and non-invasive intervention techniques in improving the quality of life for these patients. Such research efforts hold significant academic implications for the development of evidence-based treatment strategies in this field.

Abstract
Patients with neurodegenerative disorders (NDDs) often experience functional dysphagia, which may involve dysfunction in a specific phase of swallowing or in the entire process. This review outlines the approach to dysphagia in the setting of NDDs. Distinguishing the etiology of dysphagia can be difficult, and it is important to always look out for signs pointing to NDD as the cause. Thorough diagnostic work-up is essential, and it includes a comprehensive history and physical examination, alongside swallowing function tests, such as fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing, videofluoroscopic swallowing study, and high-resolution manometry. Management requires a multidisciplinary approach with a treatment plan tailored to each patient. This involves dietary guidance, swallowing rehabilitation, and surgery in cases in which improvement with rehabilitation is inadequate. Surgery may involve altering certain pharyngolaryngeal structures to facilitate swallowing and reduce the risk of aspiration (swallowing improvement surgery) or separating the airway and digestive tract while sacrificing laryngeal function, with the main goal of preventing aspiration (aspiration prevention surgery). Proper management stems from recognizing the impact of these disorders on swallowing and consistently finding ways to improve the quality of life of patients.

Abstract
Background Dysphagia represents one of the common complications following a stroke, and post-stroke dysphagia (PSD) can lead to aspiration, pneumonia, and malnutrition, thus prolonging hospital stay, escalating medical expenditures, and imposing a substantial economic strain on both patients and society. The utilization of bibliometric analysis offers a quantitative approach for investigating the existing literature and recognizes the current status of the research. However, bibliometric analysis on the subject of PSD remains absent. Consequently, we carried out this study to provide researchers with insights, facilitating their further exploration of PSD. Methods Conducting a bibliometric analysis of articles pertaining to PSD retrieved over the past two decades enables us to acquire the research hotspots and trends in this area. The publications concerning PSD were searched from the Core Collection of Web of Science, spanning the period ranging from 2003 to 2023. Articles or reviews published in English were included in this study. Subsequently, we employed CiteSpace and VOSviewer software to visualize the retrieved articles, thereby identifying the cooperative relationships of authors, institutions, and countries, as well as relevant information about journals and references. Results This study comprised 866 papers in total, and the number of articles published each year shows an overall growth trend. As for the analysis of the authors, Dziewas R. was the most prolific author with 21 articles. The most frequently published institutions, countries, and journals were the University of Manchester, China, and Dysphagia, with 28, 254, and 75 publications, respectively. And the co-cited authors and journals with the highest counts were Martino R and Stroke. According to the analysis of keywords and references, dysphagia screening and assessment, prevention of pneumonia, rehabilitation approaches, and nutritional management of PSD are considered research hotpots. Additionally, future research may focus on the topics of systematic review and meta-analysis, noninvasive brain stimulation, and lesion location. Conclusion Through the bibliometrics analysis of PSD, we can capture the research hotspots and frontiers of PSD, thereby providing inspiration and reference for subsequent studies in this field.
