Azo dyes degradation by microorganisms - An efficient and sustainable approach

Synthetic aromatic compounds consisting of various functional groups are known as dyes. These colored compounds are often discharged in effluents, and they are very dangerous to aquatic life. Basically, the dye industry started by using natural plant and insect sources, and then suddenly turned into artificial manufacturing. Natural equilibrium of our environment gets changed by the reduction in photosynthetic activity due to the dyes. In China 900,000 tons of all kinds of dyes are usually produced, which are used in many industries like food, textile, food, paper and leather. Untreated wastewater contaminates aquatic bodies by causing eutrophication, change in water color, oxygen depletion which affect aquatic organisms to a great extent. Dye wastewater is now the key environmental pollution form. In recent eras an extensive study line has been developed to explore the dye decolorization and biodegradation under both aerobic as well as anaerobic conditions. In this review, the chemistry, toxicity and microbial biodegradation/decolorization are presented. Some recent studies along with the new techniques and methodologies of remediating the dye pollution are also discussed to provide the bases of their handling. Overall, efficient and high biodegradation potential make microbes an impending foundation for green chemistry to eradicate toxic dyes from industrial wastewater.

Compact Carbon-Based Membrane Reactors for the Intensified Anaerobic Decolorization of Dye Effluents

Carbon-based membranes integrated with anaerobic biodegradation are presented as a unique wastewater treatment approach to deal with dye effluents. This study explores the scope of ceramic-supported carbon membrane bioreactors (B-CSCM) and ceramic-supported graphene oxide membrane bioreactors (B-CSGOM) to decolorize azo dye mixtures (ADM) and other dyes. The mixture was prepared using an equimolar composition of monoazo Acid Orange 7, diazo Reactive Black 5, and triazo Direct Blue 71 dye aqueous solution. Afterwards, as in the ADM experiment, both compact units were investigated for their ability in the biodecolorization of Methylene Blue (MB) and Rhodamine B (RhB) dye solutions, which do not belong to the azo family. The obtained outcomes revealed that the conductive surface of the graphene oxide (GO) membrane resulted in a more efficient and higher color removal of all dye solutions than B-CSCM under a wide feed concentration and permeate flux ranges. The maximum color removal at low feed concentration (50 mg·L⁻¹) and permeate flux (0.05 L·m⁻²·h⁻¹) was 96% for ADM, 98% for MB and 94% for RhB, whereas it was 89%, 94% and 66%, respectively, for B-CSCM. This suggests that the robust, cost-effective, efficient nanostructures of B-CSGOM can successfully remove diverse azo dye solutions from wastewater better than the B-CSCM does.

Metagenomic Insight of a Full Scale Eco-Friendly Treatment System of Textile Dye Wastewater Using Bioaugmentation of the Composite Culture CES-1

Effects of bioaugmentation of the composite microbial culture CES-1 on a full scale textile dye wastewater treatment process were investigated in terms of water quality, sludge reduction, dynamics of microbial community structures and their functional genes responsible for degradation of azo dye, and other chemicals. The removal efficiencies for Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Total Nitrogen (T-N), Total Phosphorus (T-P), Suspended Solids (SS), and color intensity (96.4%, 78.4, 83.1, 84.4, and 92.0, respectively) 300-531 days after the augmentation were generally improved after bioaugmentation. The denitrification linked to T-N removal appeared to contribute to the concomitant COD removal that triggered a reduction of sludge (up to 22%) in the same period of augmentation. Azo dye and aromatic compound degradation and other downstream pathways were highly metabolically interrelated. Augmentation of CES-1 increased microbial diversity in the later stages of augmentation when a strong microbial community selection of Acinetobacterparvus, Acinetobacterjohnsonii, Marinobacter manganoxydans, Verminephrobacter sp., and Arcobacter sp. occurred. Herein, there might be a possibility that the CES-1 augmentation could facilitate the indigenous microbial community successions so that the selected communities made the augmentation successful. The metagenomic analysis turned out to be a reasonable and powerful tool to provide with new insights and useful biomarkers for the complex environmental conditions, such as the full scale dye wastewater treatment system undergoing bioaugmentation.

Myco-decontamination of azo dyes: nano-augmentation technologies

Effluents of textile, paper, and related industries contain significant amounts of synthetic dyes which has serious environmental and health implications. Remediation of dyes through physical and chemical techniques has specific limitations. Augmented biological decontamination strategies 'microbial remediation' may involve ring-opening of dye molecules besides the reduction of constituent metal ions. Both bacterial and fungal genera are known to exhibit metabolic versatility which can be harnessed for effective bio-removal of the toxic dye contaminants. Ascomycetous/basidiomycetes fungi can effectively decontaminate azo dyes through laccase/peroxidase enzyme-mediated catalysis. The extent, efficacy, and range of fungal dye decontamination can be enhanced by the conjugated application of nanomaterials, including nanoparticles (NPs) and their composites. Fungal cell-enabled NP synthesis- 'myco-farmed NPs', is a low-cost strategy for scaled-up fabrication of a variety of metal, metal oxide, non-metal oxide NPs through oxidation/reduction of dissolved ions/molecules by extracellular biomolecules. Augmented and rapid decontamination of azo dyes at high concentrations can be achieved by the use of myco-farmed NPs, NPs adsorbed fungal biomass, and nano-immobilized fungi-derived bio-catalytical agents. This manuscript will explore the opportunities and benefits of mycoremediation and application of fungus-NP bionanoconjugate to remediate dye pollutants in wastewaters and land contaminated with the effluent of textile industries.

Green Fabrication of Tannic Acid-Inspired Magnetic Composite Nanoparticles toward Cationic Dye Capture and Selective Degradation

An environmental strategy for developing sustainable materials presents an attractive prospect for wastewater remediation. Herein, a facile, green, and economical strategy is proposed to fabricate magnetic composite nanoparticles (NPs) toward cationic dye adsorption and selective degradation. To prepare the composite TiO2-PEI-TA@Fe3O4 NPs, tannic acid (TA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) were first used to decorate Fe3O4 NPs at aqueous solution, and then TiO2 NPs were anchored onto the surfaces of Fe3O4 NPs based on the catecholamine chemistry. The chemical composition and microstructure of the obtained NPs were systematically characterized. The NPs not only exhibited adsorption ability for the cationic dye of methylene blue (MB) but also responded to ultraviolet light to selectively degrade the adsorbed MB, and the removal (adsorption and/or degradation) ratio for MB could reach 95%. In addition, cyclic experiments showed that the removal ratio of the composite NPs for MB could still be maintained more than 85% even after five cycles. Given by the above-mentioned advantages, such a green and facile strategy for combining the adsorption and degradation methods to construct magnetic nanocomposites exhibits potential applications in cationic dye selective removal and sustainable wastewater remediation.

Treatments for color removal from wastewater: State of the art

It is evident from many recent papers that release of colored wastewater into the environment is source of pollution and this is a problem that particularly affect textile, dyeing and food industries. The review: (i) presents an analysis of various mechanisms involved in the different processes for color removal; (ii) describes conveniences and disadvantages that may exist in adopting one type of treatment in spite of another; (iii) reports the results of approximately 180 experimental tests. Both examples of treatments already widely applied to the real scale and still in the experimental phase are reported. This work focuses on different types of chemical/physical, chemical, electrochemical and biological processes applied in the field of color removal from industrial wastewater. Common chemical/physical treatments such as coagulation/flocculation, adsorption and membrane filtration as well as chemical-type processes are discussed, both those that exploit the traditional oxidizing chemical agents such as Ozone, H₂O₂ and reactive based on chlorine and those based on the principle of advanced chemical oxidation. In particular, both Hydroxyl radical based Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) and Sulfate radical based AOPs are reported. The most commonly used Electrochemical processes for the removal of color are also presented as well as biological treatments. Based on more than 200 papers, this review provides important information on the use, effectiveness, advantages and downsides of the various treatments aimed at removing the color from the wastewater with a look at the technologies still under development.
