The adaptive value of density-dependent habitat specialization and social network centrality

Density dependence is a fundamental ecological process. In particular, animal habitat selection and social behavior often affect fitness in a density-dependent manner. The Ideal Free Distribution (IFD) and niche variation hypothesis (NVH) present distinct predictions associated with Optimal Foraging Theory about how the effect of habitat selection on fitness varies with population density. Using caribou (Rangifer tarandus) in Canada as a model system, we test competing hypotheses about how habitat specialization, social behavior, and annual reproductive success (co)vary across a population density gradient. Within a behavioral reaction norm framework, we estimate repeatability, behavioral plasticity, and covariance among social behavior and habitat selection to investigate the adaptive value of sociality and habitat selection. In support of NVH, but not the IFD, we find that at high density habitat specialists had higher annual reproductive success than generalists, but were also less social than generalists, suggesting the possibility that specialists were less social to avoid competition. Our study supports niche variation as a mechanism for density-dependent habitat specialization.

Habitat heterogeneities versus spatial type frequency variances as driving forces of dispersal evolution

Understanding the evolution of dispersal is essential for understanding and predicting the dynamics of natural populations. Two main factors are known to influence dispersal evolution: spatio-temporal variation in the environment and relatedness between individuals. However, the relation between these factors is still poorly understood, and they are usually treated separately. In this article, I present a theoretical framework that contains and connects effects of both environmental variation and relatedness, and reproduces and extends their known features. Spatial habitat variation selects for balanced dispersal strategies, whereby the population is kept at an ideal free distribution. Within this class of dispersal strategies, I explain how increased dispersal is promoted by perturbations to the dispersal type frequencies. An explicit formula shows the magnitude of the selective advantage of increased dispersal in terms of the spatial variability in the frequencies of the different dispersal strategies present. These variances are capable of capturing various sources of stochasticity and hence establish a common scale for their effects on the evolution of dispersal. The results furthermore indicate an alternative approach to identifying effects of relatedness on dispersal evolution.

Do animals select habitat at small or large scales? An experiment with meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus)

Habitat and patch use are crucial to the dynamics of populations and the structure of ecological communities. But ecologists have not rigorously tested whether animals choose habitat at small or large scales. If individuals base their patch and habitat choices on fine-scale differences in habitat, then their use of different sites should correspond with measures of microhabitat at those sites. But if individuals use density to assess and respond to habitat at larger spatial scales, then site use should correspond with the scale of density-dependent habitat selection. We tested these predictions with experiments that measured microhabitat and monitored the use of capture sites by meadow voles ( Microtus pennsylvanicus Ord, 1815) in 0.25 ha old-field enclosures. We varied the density of voles in pairs of adjacent enclosures and tested for density-dependent habitat selection. Then we assessed whether their frequency of captures at trapping stations was best predicted at the small scale of microhabitat or at the much larger scale of enclosures where density varied. The voles selected habitat at different scales. When the use of enclosures was predicted by density, the scale of density-dependent choice trumped the use of small-scale patches. And when voles selected amongst different small-scale patches, their use of enclosures was independent of density. These results suggest that assessments of spatial scale in habitat use must include tests for both scale- and density-dependent habitat choice.

Toward an ecological synthesis: a case for habitat selection

Habitat selection, and its associated density and frequency-dependent evolution, has a profound influence on such vital phenomena as population regulation, species interactions, the assembly of ecological communities, and the origin and maintenance of biodiversity. Different strategies of habitat selection, and their importance in ecology and evolution, can often be revealed simply by plots of density in adjacent habitats. For individual species, the strategies are closely intertwined with mechanisms of population regulation, and with the persistence of populations through time. For interacting species, strategies of habitat selection are not only responsible for species coexistence, but provide one of the most convenient mechanisms for measuring competition, and the various community structures caused by competitive interactions. Other kinds of interactions, such as those between predators and prey, demonstrate that an understanding of the coevolution of habitat-selection strategies among strongly interacting species is essential to properly interpret their spatial and temporal dynamics. At the evolutionary scale, the frequency dependence associated with habitat selection may often allow populations to diverge and diversify into separate species. Habitat selection thereby demonstrates how we can map microevolutionary strategies in behavior onto their population and community consequences, and from there, onto macroevolutionary patterns of speciation and adaptive radiation. We can anticipate that future studies of habitat selection will not only help us complete those maps, but that they will also continue to enrich the panoply of ideas that shape evolutionary ecology.
