Kinetics of solid-liquid interface motion in molecular dynamics and phase-field models: crystallization of chromium and silicon

Two-temperature molecular dynamics simulations of crystal growth in a tungsten supercooled melt

In this work we use the two-temperature model (TTM) coupled to molecular dynamics (MD) with sinks at the boundaries of the electronic subsystem to study crystal-growth rate in a quasi-one-dimensional tungsten crystal into a supercooled melt. The possibility of varying the extension of the electronic grid along with the sinks allows a more realistic description of the electronic thermal transport away from the system, providing a considerable heat dissipation from the crystallization front. Based on this approach, our results regarding crystal-growth rates are not affected even if the size of the system is changed. Moreover, comparisons are established with respect to MD and standard TTM simulations. For these comparisons between models, something remarkable is found, and it is that the temperature and the value of the maximum growth rate are the same. In contrast, the inclusion of sinks has a great impact with respect to the standard approaches specially reflected at low temperatures, where a frustration of the liquid-crystal interface dynamics is seen until a state of zero crystal growth is reached, which is not possible to characterize quantitatively since a kind of stochastic behavior is present.

The liquid-amorphous phase transition, slow dynamics and dynamical heterogeneity for bulk iron: a molecular dynamics simulation

Based on molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we investigate the liquid-amorphous phase transition, slow dynamic and dynamical heterogeneity (DH) for bulk iron in temperatures ranging 300-2300 K. The structure of obtained models is explored through the pair radial distribution function (PRDF) and simplex statistics. It was shown that the splitting of a PRDF second peak appears when the liquid transforms to an amorphous solid. This feature is originated from the transformation of simplexes from strongly-to weakly-distorted tetrahedron type. Further, we reveal that the diffusivity in the liquid is realized through the local density fluctuations (LDF) which are strongly correlated with each other. The diffusion coefficient is found to be a product of the rate of LDF act and mean square displacement of particles per LDF act. The later quantity mainly contributes to the slow dynamics and DH in the liquid. We found that the mobile atom clusters move during relaxation time, but mobile atoms do not tend to leave their cluster. Our work is expected to contribute a pathway to determine the liquid-amorphous phase transition and DH heterogeneity of bulk metal.

Transport phenomena in complex systems (part 1)

The issue, in two parts, is devoted to theoretical, computational and experimental studies of transport phenomena in various complex systems (in porous and composite media; systems with physical and chemical reactions and phase and structural transformations; in biological tissues and materials). Various types of these phenomena (heat and mass transfer; hydrodynamic and rheological effects; electromagnetic field propagation) are considered. Anomalous, relaxation and nonlinear transport, as well as transport induced by the impact of external fields and noise, is the focus of this issue. Modern methods of computational modelling, statistical physics and hydrodynamics, nonlinear dynamics and experimental methods are presented and discussed. Special attention is paid to transport phenomena in biological systems (such as haemodynamics in stenosed and thrombosed blood vessels magneto-induced heat generation and propagation in biological tissues, and anomalous transport in living cells) and to the development of a scientific background for progressive methods in cancer, heart attack and insult therapy (magnetic hyperthermia for cancer therapy, magnetically induced circulation flow in thrombosed blood vessels and non-contact determination of the local rate of blood flow in coronary arteries). The present issue includes works on the phenomenological study of transport processes, the derivation of a macroscopic governing equation on the basis of the analysis of a complicated internal reaction and the microscopic determination of macroscopic characteristics of the studied systems.
