Abstract
The associations between serum hemoglobin (Hb) levels and bone mineral density (BMD) were investigated in population of the 4th Iranian Multicenter Osteoporosis Study (IMOS). A positive relationship between Hb levels and BMD at hip and femoral neck were detected only in men. PURPOSE Previous studies have investigated the relationship between hemoglobin (Hb) levels and bone mineral density (BMD) with controversial findings. This study aimed to evaluate this association using data from the 4th Iranian Multicenter Osteoporosis Study (IMOS), a population-based national survey, including a population sample aged 50 years and older. METHODS The present study was conducted as a cross-sectional data analysis derived from the fourth round of the IMOS. Demographic information, Hb levels, and BMD measurements were collected. BMD was measured with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Low BMD (osteopenia/osteoporosis) and osteoporosis were defined as a T-score less than -1 and less than -2.5 at each site including hip, femoral neck, or lumbar spine, respectively. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to assess the relationship between Hb levels and BMD. RESULTS This study included 1,426 participants (54.2% female) with the mean age of 62.6 ± 8.0 years. The mean Hb levels among patients with or without osteoporosis were 12.9 ± 2.0 mg/dl and 13.1 ± 1.9 mg/dl, respectively (p-value = 0.08). It was demonstrated a positive relationship between Hb levels and BMD at hip (β = 0.0079, 95% CI: 0.002- 0.0135, p-value = 0.006) and femoral neck (β = 0.0064, 95% CI: 0.0015- 0.0113, p-value = 0.01) in only men. However, there was no significant correlation between Hb levels with low BMD and osteoporosis in either gender. CONCLUSION Our findings showed a favorable relationship between Hb levels and BMD at the hip and femoral neck, particularly in men. This highlights gender and site-specific distinctions between hematological and skeletal health..Future studies should unravel these possible associations and investigate the underlying mechanisms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to investigate the association between fasting blood glucose and osteoporosis in women with diabetes, anemia, and renal function. METHODS The medical records of women who underwent a general health examination at a regional hospital in southern Taiwan were retrospectively reviewed. Logistic regression analysis was performed to assess the association between osteoporosis and fasting blood glucose separately for the eight subgroups (diabetes or non-diabetes, anemia or non-anemia, normal or decreased renal function), adjusting for other clinical characteristics and laboratory findings. RESULTS A total of 11,872 women were included in the study. Among women with diabetes, anemia, and decreased renal function, an increment of 10 mg/dL in fasting blood glucose was associated with an increased risk of osteoporosis (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 1.57, p = 0.004). Among women without diabetes, fasting blood glucose was significantly associated with an increased risk of osteoporosis in those with anemia and normal renal function (OR = 1.14, p = 0.023) and those without anemia and normal renal function (OR = 1.04, p = 0.015), but these associations were not significant after adjusting for other covariates. CONCLUSIONS Higher fasting blood glucose levels in women with diabetes, anemia, and decreased renal function were associated with an increased risk of osteoporosis. Clinicians should be vigilant about glucose control in patients with diabetes to reduce the risk of fracture.

Abstract
CONTEXT Anemia and decreasing levels of hemoglobin (Hb) have previously been linked to increased fracture risk, but the added value to FRAX, the most utilized fracture prediction tool worldwide, is unknown. OBJECTIVE To investigate the association between anemia, Hb levels, bone microstructure, and risk of incident fracture and to evaluate whether Hb levels improve fracture risk prediction in addition to FRAX clinical risk factors (CRFs). METHODS A total of 2778 community-dwelling women, aged 75-80 years, and part of a prospective population-based cohort study in Sweden were included. At baseline, information on anthropometrics, CRFs, and falls was gathered, blood samples were collected, and skeletal characteristics were investigated using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry and high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography. At the end of follow-up, incident fractures were retrieved from a regional x-ray archive. RESULTS The median follow-up time was 6.4 years. Low Hb was associated with worse total hip and femoral neck bone mineral density (BMD), and lower tibia cortical and total volumetric BMD, and anemia was associated with increased risk of major osteoporotic fracture (MOF; hazard ratio 2.04; 95% CI 1.58-2.64). Similar results were obtained for hip fracture and any fracture, also when adjusting for CRFs. The ratio between 10-year fracture probabilities of MOF assessed in models with Hb levels included and not included ranged from 1.2 to 0.7 at the 10th and 90th percentile of Hb, respectively. CONCLUSION Anemia and decreasing levels of Hb are associated with lower cortical BMD and incident fracture in older women. Considering Hb levels may improve the clinical evaluation of patients with osteoporosis and the assessment of fracture risk.

Abstract
Introduction In the elder population, both low hemoglobin (Hb)/anemia and osteoporosis (OP) are highly prevalent. However, the relationship between Hb and OP is still poorly understood. This study was to evaluate the correlation between Hb and OP in Chinese elderly population. Methods One thousand and sisty-eight individuals aged 55-85 years were enrolled into this cross-sectional study during June 2019-November 2019. Data on the demographics and clinical characteristics were recorded. Detections of complete blood count, liver/kidney function, glucose metabolism and lipid profile, and thoracolumbar X-ray were performed, and bone mineral density (BMD) at lumbar spine 1-4, femur neck, and total hip was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Univariate and multivariate linear regression analyses were employed to evaluate the correlation between Hb with BMD T-score. Logistic regression analysis was performed to access the correlation between different Hb levels and the odds ratio (OR) for OP. Results Compared with non-OP group, OP patients had lower level of Hb. Univariate linear regression analysis indicated Hb level was positively related to the BMD of lumbar spine 1-4, femur neck and total hip, and this relationship remained after adjusting confounding variables [gender, age, body mass index (BMI), diabetes mellitus (DM) and morphological vertebral fracture]. Logistic regression analysis showed the ORs for OP decreased with the increase of Hb. Compared with the subjects with the lowest quartile of Hb, the OR for OP in the highest quartile group was 0.60 (0.41-0.89) after adjusting for gender, age and BMI, and the OR for OP was 0.62 (0.41-0.92) after further adjustment for gender, age, BMI, DM, and lipid indexes. Discussion In conclusion, Lower Hb level is related to lower BMD in the elderly population. However, whether Hb level could be used to predict the risk of OP needs to be further determined in more longitudinal clinical studies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The double burden of malnutrition accompanied by micronutrient deficiency is referred to as the triple burden of malnutrition (TBM). Very few studies have highlighted the TBM in children with type-1 diabetes. We conducted this study with the objective of estimating the TBM in Indian children and youth with type-1 diabetes (T1D) and to study role of anaemia in the development of complications associated with T1D. METHODS This cross-sectional observational study included 394 subjects with T1D. Demographic data, anthropometry, blood pressure, biochemical measurements, dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and peripheral quantitative computed tomography were performed using standard protocols. Estimated glucose disposal rate (eGDR) and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) were calculated for all subjects. RESULTS We report a 16, 5.8, and 16.2% prevalence of anaemia, underweight and overweight/obese suggesting TBM with microcytic hypochromic anaemia as the most common morphological form. Haemoglobin concentrations showed positive correlation with systolic and diastolic blood pressure. The presence of anaemia was a significant predictor of eGDR and macrovascular complications in T1D which could not be attributed to glycemic control. Bone health of anaemic T1D subjects was poor than subjects without anaemia on DXA scan after adjusting for confounders. No systematic pattern between Hb concentrations and eGFR or ACR was found. CONCLUSIONS TBM in Indian children and youth with T1D is a significant health problem and anaemia is an important predictor in the development of macrovascular complications and poor bone health associated with T1D. However, its role in development of microvascular complications remains to be explored.

Abstract
In mammals, hematopoiesis migrates to the bone marrow during embryogenesis coincident with the appearance of mineralized bone, where hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and their progeny are maintained by the surrounding microenvironment or niche, and sustain the entirety of the hematopoietic system. Genetic manipulation of niche factors and advances in cell lineage tracing techniques have implicated cells of both hematopoietic and nonhematopoietic origin as important regulators of hematopoiesis in health and disease. Among them, cells of the osteoblast lineage, from stromal skeletal stem cells to matrix-embedded osteocytes, are vital niche residents with varying capacities for hematopoietic support depending on stage of differentiation. Here, we review populations of osteoblasts at differing stages of differentiation and summarize the current understanding of the role of the osteoblast lineage in supporting hematopoiesis. © 2022 American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR).

Abstract
Low hemoglobin (Hb) level or anemia is associated with osteoporosis and bone fracture. Cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) exposure are also risk factors of osteoporosis and anemia. However, the role of anemia in Cd/Pb related bone loss remains unclear. The aim of present study was to investigate the association between Hb level and bone loss in a population with environmental lead and cadmium exposure. One hundred and ninety-four women and 108 men with different levels of Cd/Pb exposure were included in our study. The Cd/Pb exposure was determined using graphite-furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. Forearm bone mineral density (BMD) was determined by peripheral dual-energy X-ray absortiometry. Hb concentration was determined using an automatic blood cellcounter. A logistic model was established to predict the risk of osteoporosis. The BMDs of women that had the highest quartile BCd and BPb were markedly lower than that with the lowest quartile (p < 0.05). The BMD and the prevalence of osteoporosis in men with anemia were lower and higher than that with normal Hb (p < 0.05), respectively. In men, age, BPb and anemia were independent risk factors for osteoporosis. The odds ratio (OR) of men with anemia was 11.28 (95%confidence interval (CI):1.94-65.54) and 19.56 (95%CI: 2.98-128.78) compared to those with normal Hb after adjusting for potential cofounders. No such association was found in women. The area under the curve was 0.88 (95%CI: 0.82-0.96) in predicting osteoporosis using the logistic model in men. Linear discriminant analysis also showed that 90.7% of osteoporosis was correctly classified. Our data show that anemia is associated with incident of osteoporosis in men but not in women that environmentally exposed to Pb and Cd.

Abstract
Objectives Several studies demonstrated a positive relationship between hemoglobin level and bone mineral density (BMD). Thus, the association between hemoglobin concentration and osteoporosis in elders with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) was explored in this study. Methods Totally, 573 elders with T2DM were included in the study. BMD was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Hemoglobin levels were tested. The association between the hemoglobin level and osteoporosis was subjected to logistic regression analysis. Results For men, the hemoglobin levels were significantly lower in osteoporosis group than that in non-osteoporosis group (135.98 ± 16.20 vs. 142.84 ± 13.78 g/L, P = 0.002). Hemoglobin levels were positively related with BMD of total hip and femoral neck in men (r = 0.170, P = 0.004; r = 0.148, P = 0.012, respectively). After adjusting for age, body mass index (BMI), hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 [25(OH) D3], the hemoglobin level was related with a 0.97-fold lower risk of osteoporosis (odds ratio (OR): 0.97; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.95–0.99; P = 0.004) in men, but no such association was found in women. Conclusion Higher levels of hemoglobin play a protective role against osteoporosis in older men with T2DM.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Anaemia and osteoporotic fractures are both major health problems among older adults worldwide. OBJECTIVES Previous studies suggest that anaemia may be associated with elevated fracture risk among older adults; however, the exact relationship between them is unknown. We aimed to investigate the association between anaemia and fracture risk. METHODS A comprehensive literature search was performed in four medical databases. We included articles that were published from inception to February 18, 2021. Odds ratios (ORs), hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs), and original raw incidences from studies comparing fracture rates in anaemic versus non-anaemic patients were extracted and pooled with the random-effects model. I2 test was used to assess heterogeneity. Risk of bias assessment was performed using the Quality of Prognostic Studies tool. PROSPERO CRD42021241109. RESULTS A total of 13 studies were identified; 8 of them were included in the quantitative synthesis. Anaemia was found to be a risk factor for fracture compared to non-anaemia. Anaemia increased hip fracture risk in both older men (HR = 1.71; CI: 1.46-2.00, p< 0.001, I2 = 83.2%) and women (HR = 1.31; CI: 1.13-1.52, p< 0.001), but the fracture risk was more increased among men. There was also an increased chance of hip fracture in the presence of anaemia in populations, including both older men and women (OR = 1.64; CI: 1.35-2.01, p< 0.001, I2 = 61.1%). Anaemia was also associated with increased vertebral (HR = 1.21; CI: 1.04-1.40, p = 0.012) and all-type (HR = 1.49; CI: 1.19-1.86, p< 0.001) fracture risk in older men. CONCLUSION Our results suggest that there is a significant relationship between anaemia and fracture risk in older adults. This association is stronger among older men than women and differs in the different types of fractures.

Abstract
Osteoporosis is a common systemic disease of the skeleton, characterized by compromised bone mass and strength, consequently leading to an increased risk of fragility fractures. In women, the disease mainly occurs due to the menopausal fall in estrogen levels, leading to an imbalance between bone resorption and bone formation and, consequently, to bone loss and bone fragility. Moreover, osteoporosis may affect men and may occur as a sequela to different diseases or even to their treatments. Despite their wide prevalence in the general population, the skeletal implications of many gastrointestinal diseases have been poorly investigated and their potential contribution to bone fragility is often underestimated in clinical practice. However, proper functioning of the gastrointestinal system appears essential for the skeleton, allowing correct absorption of calcium, vitamins, or other nutrients relevant to bone, preserving the gastrointestinal barrier function, and maintaining an optimal endocrine-metabolic balance, so that it is very likely that most chronic diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, and even gastrointestinal dysbiosis, may have profound implications for bone health. In this manuscript, we provide an updated and critical revision of the role of major gastrointestinal disorders in the pathogenesis of osteoporosis and fragility fractures.

Abstract
BACKGROUND As a valuable blood glucose measurement, HemoglobinA1c (HbA1c) is of great clinical value for diabetes. However, in previous observational studies, studies on its effect on bone mineral density (BMD) have different results. This study aimed to use Mendelian randomization (MR) to assess the effect of HbA1c on bone mineral density and fracture risk, and try to further explore whether this association was achieved through glycemic or non-glycemic factors. METHODS Take HbA1c measurement as exposure, and BMD estimated from quantitative heel ultrasounds (eBMD) and bone fractures as outcomes. Two-Sample MR Analysis was conducted to assess the causal effect of HbA1C on heel BMD and risk fracture. Then, we performed the analysis using two subsets of these variants, one related to glycemic measurement and the other to erythrocyte indices. RESULTS Genetically increased HbA1C was associated with the lower heel eBMD [odds ratio (OR) 0.91 (95% CI 0.87, 0.96) per %-unit, P = 3 × 10-4(IVW)]. Higher HbA1C was associated with lower heel eBMD when using only erythrocytic variants [OR 0.87 (0.82, 0.93), P=2× 10-5(IVW)]; However, when using only glycemic variants, this casual association does not hold. In further MR analysis, we test the association of erythrocytic traits with heel eBMD. CONCLUSION Our study revealed the significant causal effect of HbA1c on eBMD, and this causal link might achieve through non-glycemic pathways (erythrocytic indices).

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The association between hemoglobin (Hb) level including anemia and fracture has not been studied thoroughly. MATERIALS AND METHODS 197, 187 adults ≥ 50 years from the National Health Insurance Service of Korea were studied. Hb was determined during health screening examinations in 2004 or 2005. From 1 January 2006, participants were followed up for fracture until 31 December 2013. Hb levels (g/dL) were categorized into five groups, with normal hemoglobin levels subdivided into three groups (low normal, normal, and high normal Hb): < 13, ≥ 13 to < 14, ≥ 14 to < 16, ≥ 16 to < 17, 17 for men and < 12, ≥ 12 to < 13, ≥ 13 to < 14, ≥ 14 to < 16, ≥ 16 for women. Anemia was defined as Hb < 13 g/dL and < 12 g/dL for men and women, respectively. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to determine the adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for fracture according to Hb. RESULTS Compared to individuals with normal Hb, those with anemia and low normal Hb were associated with significantly increased risk of fracture. In women, those with anemia had a higher risk for any (aHR 1.11, 95% CI 1.05-1.17), hip (aHR 1.27, 95% CI 1.01-1.59), and radius fracture (aHR 1.15, 95% CI 1.05-1.25). In men, those with anemia had a higher risk for any (aHR 1.37, 95% CI 1.23-1.51), vertebral (aHR 1.33, 95% CI 1.15-1.53), and hip fracture (aHR 1.64, 95% CI 1.30-2.08). This risk-enhancing association was preserved among various subgroups. CONCLUSION Among adults ≥ 50 years, anemia and low normal Hb are risk factors for fracture.

Abstract
An association between anemia and an increased risk of osteoporosis has been suggested. The goal of this study was to estimate the association of hemoglobin (Hb) level with osteoporosis. A total of 69,760 osteoporosis patients aged ≥ 40 years old from the Korean National Health Insurance Service Health Screening Cohort were enrolled. From an identical cohort database, 69,760 comparison participants were randomly selected. Hb levels before the onset of osteoporosis were evaluated. The association of Hb level with osteoporosis was analyzed using a conditional logistic regression model adjusted for obesity, smoking status, alcohol consumption, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, total cholesterol, and the Charlson comorbidity index score. Fifteen percent of the osteoporosis group and 14.17% of the comparison group had anemia. The Hb level was associated with 0.98-fold lower odds for osteoporosis (95% confidence intervals = 0.97-0.99, p < 0.001). A low Hb level was associated with a high risk of osteoporosis in the adult population. There was a consistent association between a low Hb level and osteoporosis in patients with comorbidities.

BACKGROUND Studies reported that there is a relationship between volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD) and hemoglobin (HGB) in sickle cell anemia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and chronic kidney disease, it is not clear whether this association exists in normal populations or different genders. In order to further clarify the relationship between vBMD and HGB, and provide the basis for the diagnosis of related diseases, this study was conducted in the physical examination population. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted on a health check-up population from Wannan area of China from January to December 2018. The study involved 1238 individuals aged 23 to 85 years. Linear regression analysis and smooth curve were applied to determine the relationship of HGB and vBMD. RESULTS The average level of vBMD in the population was 130.11 ± 79.51 mg/cm3, after adjusting for age, body mass index (BMI), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), glucose (GLU), high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL). A U-shape relationship was established between vBMD and HGB, the cut off value of HGB was 130 g/L. After gender stratification, the results showed a U-shaped curve relationship between vBMD and HGB in male group, and a linear relationship between vBMD and HGB in female group. The vBMD decreased with HGB when HGB < 120 g/L, and increased when HGB ≥ 120 g/L in male group. CONCLUSION The relationship between vBMD and HGB in the male physical examination population presents a U-shaped curve.

Abstract
This cross-sectional, retrospective medical record review study aimed to investigate the association between hemoglobin levels and bone mineral density (BMD) in adult women. Medical records obtained from general health examinations conducted from June 2014 to July 2020 at a regional hospital in southern Taiwan were reviewed. Anthropometric and laboratory data were recorded. BMD of the lumbar spine and bilateral femoral neck regions was assessed by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. Linear regression analysis was used to assess the association between BMD and hemoglobin level with and without adjusting for other anthropometric and laboratory data. The study included 9606 female patients with a mean age of 55.9 years. Of these, 2756 (28.7%) were aged ≤ 50 years and 6850 (71.3%) were aged > 50 years. Results from multiple linear regression analysis showed that hemoglobin and femoral and lumbar spine BMD were significantly correlated. A higher hemoglobin level was significantly associated with a lower BMD level in females aged ≤ 50 years, but with a higher BMD level in those aged > 50 years. Given the relationship between bone metabolism and hematopoiesis, additional research is needed to elucidate the association between hemoglobin and BMD levels in different age groups, particularly in premenopausal and perimenopausal women.

Abstract
Osteoporosis (OP) and osteoporotic fractures (OFs) are common multifactorial and heterogenic disorders of increasing incidence. Helicobacter pylori (H.p.) colonizes the stomach approximately in half of the world's population, causes gastroduodenal diseases and is prevalent in numerous extra-digestive diseases known to be associated with OP/OF. The studies regarding relationship between H.p. infection (HPI) and OP/OFs are inconsistent. The current review summarizes the relevant literature on the potential role of HPI in OP, falls and OFs and highlights the reasons for controversies in the publications. In the first section, after a brief overview of HPI biological features, we analyze the studies evaluating the association of HPI and bone status. The second part includes data on the prevalence of OP/OFs in HPI-induced gastroduodenal diseases (peptic ulcer, chronic/atrophic gastritis and cancer) and the effects of acid-suppressive drugs. In the next section, we discuss the possible contribution of HPI-associated extra-digestive diseases and medications to OP/OF, focusing on conditions affecting both bone homeostasis and predisposing to falls. In the last section, we describe clinical implications of accumulated data on HPI as a co-factor of OP/OF and present a feasible five-step algorithm for OP/OF risk assessment and management in regard to HPI, emphasizing the importance of an integrative (but differentiated) holistic approach. Increased awareness about the consequences of HPI linked to OP/OF can aid early detection and management. Further research on the HPI-OP/OF relationship is needed to close current knowledge gaps and improve clinical management of both OP/OF and HPI-related disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Disorders in bone metabolism have long been recognized as typical sequelae of gastrectomy; however, the pathogenesis has not been fully elucidated, resulting in a variation of reported incidence. This study aimed to evaluate current bone health by measuring bone mineral density (BMD) in patients treated by gastrectomy for gastric cancer, with a focus on incidence and risk factors of osteoporosis. METHODS The study enrolled 81 patients who underwent gastrectomy for gastric cancer at Kochi Medical School. BMD of the lumbar spine was measured by dual-energy X-ray mineral absorptiometry, with the results expressed as a percentage of the young adult mean (YAM). Clinical data were also obtained to investigate associations with BMD. RESULTS Of the 81 study patients, 12 (14.8%) were deemed to have osteoporosis, defined by a percentage of YAM <70, with a dominance of females over males (66.7% vs 17.4%; P < 0.001). The median body weight, hemoglobin concentration, and serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) level of the patients with osteoporosis was significantly lower than in those with a percentage of YAM ≥70 group (39.6 kg vs 53.1 kg, P < 0.001; 10.9 mg/dL vs 12.5 mg/dL, P = 0.010; 210 U/L vs 251 U/L, P = 0.002). Further analyses revealed a significant positive correlation between body weight and percentage of YAM (r = 0.441, P < 0.001). Despite the administration of bisphosphonates in these patients during this study, one acquired a bone fracture. CONCLUSION Osteoporosis was found in 14.8% of postoperative gastric cancer patients, with female gender, low body weight, and low ALP proposed as risk factors for osteoporosis and thus future bone fracture.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine the association between serum hemoglobin
level, bone mineral density, and fracture risks based on the estimated score of
the Fracture Risk Assessment Tool (FRAX) in Asian male adults. The medical
records of 662 male patients who underwent health examinations at a regional
teaching hospital in southern Taiwan were reviewed. The medical history,
demographic characteristics, clinical laboratory results, and bone mineral
density of the patients were ascertained from their medical records. Simple and
multiple linear regression analyses were conducted to evaluate the association
of hemoglobin levels with bone mineral density, the 10-year risk of hip
fracture, and the 10-year risk of major osteoporotic fracture (clinical spine,
forearm, hip, or shoulder fracture) as assessed by FRAX. The mean age of the
patients was 53.1 years. Results from simple linear regression analysis
indicated that hemoglobin was positively associated with bone mineral density
but inversely associated with both hip fracture risk and major osteoporotic
fracture risk. Similar results were obtained when potential confounding
variables were adjusted using multiple linear regression analysis. Low serum
hemoglobin levels might be an important indicator for predicting bone mineral
loss and the risk of both major osteoporotic fracture and hip fracture in male
patients. Bone mineral density should be closely monitored in patients receiving
treatment for anemia.

Abstract
Background Fractures are a major public health problem for elderly people throughout the world. Anemia is also a common, important health problem among elderly populations. The aim of this article was to estimate the association between anemia and fracture incidence via a systematic review and meta-analysis. Material/Methods The participant, intervention, observation, and study design (PICOS) reporting guidelines were followed, and databases were searched from their inception to May 2020 to identify relevant studies. When heterogeneity was significant, and a random-effects model was used. Subgroup analysis was conducted to explore the source of heterogeneity based on sex, study design, and region. Result We found that anemia significantly increased fracture risk [relative risk (RR)=1.26, 95% confidence interval (CI)=1.14–1.39, P<0.001], specifically, hip fracture (RR=1.44, 95% CI=1.29–1.61), spine fracture (RR=1.15, 95% CI=1.08–1.23), and nonspine fracture (RR=1.42, 95% CI=1.33–1.52). Males with anemia had a 1.51-fold higher fracture risk, females had a 1.09-fold higher fracture risk. And the association was stronger in Asian (RR=1.22, 95% CI=1.07–1.40), but not in American and European study populations. Conclusions In conclusion, a significantly increased fracture risk was observed, and anemia can be a predictor of fracture risk.

Abstract
The relationship between iron and bone mineral density (BMD) is still poorly understood. We investigated the associations of iron intake, serum iron and serum ferritin with BMD. This cross-sectional study identified 4000 females aged 12 to 49 years with complete and valid data on iron intake, serum iron, serum ferritin, and femoral neck and lumbar spine BMD from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2005-2010. Daily iron intake was the mean intake of iron nutrient ascertained from two consecutive 24-h dietary recalls; serum iron and serum ferritin were directly measured with established methods. Femoral neck and lumbar spine BMD were measured by Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). After adjusting for multiple covariates (i.e., age, body mass index and race), we used linear regression and generalized additive models (GAMs) to test the linear and non-linear associations of iron intake, serum iron and serum ferritin with BMD. The mean age of this study was 27.70 years (SD = 11.88 years). Higher serum ferritin was associated with lower femoral neck and lumbar spine BMD (all adjusted P < 0.05); iron intake and serum iron were not associated with femoral neck and lumbar spine BMD. Similar results were found when iron levels were classified as iron deficiency, normal iron and iron overload. There were no obvious non-linear relationships between the above three iron variables and BMD in the GAM analyses. There was a negative and linear association between serum ferritin and BMD; iron intake and serum iron were not associated with BMD. Serum ferritin appeared to be a better iron variable than iron intake and serum iron in relation to BMD.

Abstract
Purpose This study is aimed at determining whether bone mineral density (BMD) values are related to atherogenic indexes (AIs) and could predict the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in southern Taiwanese adults. Methods Medical records of 3249 adults who underwent health examinations between June 2014 and February 2018 at a regional hospital in southern Taiwan were reviewed. Data collected included health history, anthropomorphic characteristics, exercise habits, diets (vegetarian or nonvegetarian), clinical laboratory results (lipid profile, systemic blood pressure (SBP), glucose level, creatinine (Cre) level, and hemoglobin (Hb) level), and bone mineral density (BMD), which were used to identify the associations of these parameters, especially BMD, with lipid profile and calculated AIs through simple and multiple linear regressions. Results The mean age of the patients was 58.0 years, and 71.4% were male. Body mass index (BMI), SBP, glucose level, Cre level, Hb level, and all BMD values were positively correlated with triglyceride (TG) level and AIs and were negatively correlated with high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) level. The significant positive correlations of BMD at all the measured sites with AIs remained after adjusting for age, sex, SBP, glucose level, Cre level, Hb level, smoking, exercise habits, and vegetarian state. The expanded adjusting model for TG/HDL-C remained significant at all the BMD measured sites in nonobese men, at bilateral femoral neck and total hips in nonobese women, and at the bilateral total hips in obese women. Conclusions AIs are predictive markers for CVD, and BMD values are predictors of AIs, especially the novel AI, i.e., TG/HDL-C ratio, in nonobese adult men and women after dividing the patients into subgroups to eliminate the effect of BMI as a confounding factor. Thus, BMD values could predict AIs of CVD, especially in nonobese adults.

Abstract
Anemia is a common health problem in older adults and is associated with risk factors for fracture such as low physical function and low bone mass. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between anemia and fracture risk in older adults. We conducted a retrospective cohort study from 2003 to 2013. The participants were community-dwelling Korean adults aged 65 years and older who participated in the National Health Screening Program (n = 72,131) between 2003 and 2008. Anemia (<12 g/dL for women and <13 g/dL for men) and severity of anemia (mild: 11 g/dL ≤ Hb < 12 g/dL; moderate to severe: Hb < 11 g/dL) were defined by World Health Organization (WHO) criteria. The incidence of any fractures, vertebral fractures, and femur fractures was identified using ICD-10 codes. Cox proportional hazard regression models were used to assess risk of fracture according to anemia. Anemia was associated with increased risk of fracture in men (any: adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] = 1.29, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.18-1.41; vertebral: aHR = 1.20, 95% CI 1.03-1.40; femur: aHR = 1.71, 95% CI 1.44-2.04), and less strongly but still significantly in women (any: aHR = 1.10, 95% CI 1.11-1.41; vertebral: aHR = 1.11, 95% CI 1.03-1.20; femur: aHR = 1.37, 95% CI 1.25-1.52). Higher risk was observed in subjects with moderate-to-severe anemia in both sexes. Considering the high prevalence of anemia in older adults, it is important that health professionals recognize increased fracture risk in older adults with anemia. © 2019 American Society for Bone and Mineral Research.

Abstract
Osteoporosis is a common metabolic bone disease. The impact of global blood plasma proteins on the risk of osteoporosis remains elusive now. We performed a large-scale polygenic risk score (PRS) analysis to evaluate the potential effects of blood plasma proteins on the development of osteoporosis in 2286 Caucasians, including 558 males and 1728 females. Bone mineral density (BMD) and bone areas at ulna & radius, hip, and spine were measured using Hologic 4500W DXA. BMD/bone areas values were adjusted for age, sex, height, and weight as covariates. Genome-wide SNP genotyping of 2286 Caucasian subjects was performed using Affymetrix Human SNP Array 6.0. The 267 blood plasma proteins-associated SNP loci and their genetic effects were obtained from recently published genome-wide association study (GWAS) using a highly multiplexed aptamer-based affinity proteomics platform. The polygenetic risk score (PRS) of study subjects for each blood plasma protein was calculated from the genotypes data of the 2286 Caucasian subjects by PLINK software. Pearson correlation analysis of individual PRS values and BMD/bone area value was performed using R. Additionally, gender-specific analysis also was performed by Pearson correlation analysis. 267 blood plasma proteins were analyzed in this study. For BMD, we observed association signals between 41 proteins and BMD, mainly including whole body total BMD versus Factor H (p value = 9.00 × 10-3), whole body total BMD versus BGH3 (p value = 1.40 × 10-2), spine total BMD versus IGF-I (p value = 2.15 × 10-2), and spine total BMD versus SAP (p value = 3.90 × 10-2). As for bone areas, association evidence was observed between 45 blood plasma proteins and bone areas, such as ferritin versus spine area (p value = 1.90 × 10-2), C4 versus hip area (p value = 1.25 × 10-2), and hemoglobin versus right ulna and radius area (p value = 2.70 × 10-2). Our study results suggest the modest impact of blood plasma proteins on the variations of BMD/bone areas, and identify several candidate blood plasma proteins for osteoporosis.

Abstract
Bleeding disorders, including hemophilia, can be seen in every ethnic population in the world. Among various bleeding disorders, reduced bone density has been addressed in hemophilia A. In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in addressing osteopenia and osteoporosis in hemophilia A. There is little or no study about the possible susceptibility of other individuals with bleeding disorders to reduced bone density. Questions have been raised about the role of blood coagulation factors in bone mineralization. This review provides new insight and ideas for further survey in the field of bleeding disorders and reduced bone density.
