Abstract
We investigate the physical properties of the Ba(1-x)K(x)BiO(3) compounds with a focus on the optical properties. Results from the simple Holstein model, describing a single band coupled to an oxygen breathing mode with parameters derived from first principles calculations, are in excellent agreement with a broad range of experimental information. It accounts for an insulating parent compound at x=0, with a direct (optical) and an indirect gap, and a metal insulator transition around x=0.38. Strong electron-phonon coupling leads to spectral weight redistribution over a frequency scale much larger than the characteristic phonon frequency and to strongly anharmonic phonons. We find that the metallic phase in the vicinity of phase boundary is close to the polaronic regime.

Abstract
The present ab initio study shows that in BaBiO3, Bi3+ sites can trap two holes from the valence band to form Bi5+ cations. The trapping is accompanied by large local lattice distortions; therefore the composite particle consisting of the electronic hole and the local lattice phonon field forms a polaron. Our study clearly shows that even sp elements can trap carriers at lattice sites, if local lattice relaxations are sufficiently large to screen the localized hole. The derived model describes all relevant experimental results, and settles the issue of why hole-doped BaBiO3 remains semiconducting upon moderate hole doping.

Abstract
An infrared-absorption band centered at 0.85 eV, which is below the big optical absorption at the charge-density-wave (CDW) gap energy of 1.85 eV, has been observed for semiconducting single crystalline Ba(1-x)KxBiO3. With substituting K for Ba, the spectral weight of the new band increases with x, while that of the CDW-gap excitation decreases. Since the impurity state with the K substitution is known to be nonmagnetic at low temperatures, Bi3+ the state with 6s2 electrons surrounded by the six Bi5+ ions forms a small bipolaron by losing a pair of electrons in the Rice-Sneddon model. The new band is assigned to a transition from the lower-Peierls band to a state of the bipolaronic point defect.
